Everything about this place was amazing. The service was spectacular and the food was outstanding!

Went to Papi Chulo's last night and the experience was ridiculous, and the food was pretty bad. My girlfriend and I were running errands yesterday evening, and decided to order some burritos for pick up when we were done. And to be honest, we were debating whether to get papi chulo's or not since it was a weeknight and we never eat out on weeknights. Safe to say, it was a mistake. They told her on the phone that our pick up order would be ready in 10 min. I walked in there 15 min later to get it, and it was not ready. The gentleman helping me out when I walked in looked like he had zero idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the pick up order name. He then immediately walked away from me and went to the register, and proceeded to ask me what I ordered and at this point, I knew he didn't know what it was and he said, "oh, it will be ready in 7 minutes." I ordered only 3 Breakfast burritos with no meat or anything in them - so, I thought 7 min wasn't too bad. Boy, was I wrong. It actually took 20 min (yes, 20 min) with me standing there by the table until the order was ready with no number or anything. I'll remind you all that there were legit 2 other customers in there and ONE CUSTOMER received their order before our 3 breakfast burritos were ready! That isn't right. I get sometimes food takes awhile, but both of them didn't apologize or anything while I was waiting. I've been to Muchas Gracious waiting for my order before, and they offered me a free drink because they felt bad they were having me wait 5 min! I don't accept it because I felt bad, but the point is, the lack of accountability and customer service during this experience was dreadful. And to be honest, the times I've been here, they haven't ever been too nice to me. After the order was finally ready, the lady working by the grill stuffed in at least 10 plastic containers of hot sauce into my bag. When we got home, most of them opened up and it left the biggest mess in the bag! Come on guys. This was just bad. Plus, my burritos were greasy anyways and tasted off. (See picture of the mess). I won't lie, there's plenty of other Mexican restaurants and establishments I can go to other than Papi Chulo's. Pretty disappointing experience overall and I can guarantee you I won't be going back anytime soon. I'd give the experience a 1/10 and the food a 2/10. read more

Came back for a late-night burrito and it's decent. The vibe and energy inside was super fun. Lots of people and hype music but the food was ok. The Birria Burrito was full of meat and cheese but everything was too greasy. The burrito itself was also kind of soggy, might be because we took it out though. Salsas were good. Loved! This spot reminds me of somewhere in NYC, the subway tile walls, narrow store and raised walkway out front surrounded by brick buildings. Cool location, staff was nice, friendly and efficient. We ordered a variety of tacos, mine specifically were the asada and Poc Chuc with a Dos Equis. All around some of the best tacos I've had, lots of flavor and simple toppings. Too many places pile them with toppings that are so unnecessary. The birria tacos my friends had looked delicious too. My friend's Margarita was good too, sorry I don't recall which one she ordered. Updated review for order Jun 9: Actually stopped it to the restaurant to place an order to-go as I have the Passport Unlimited card and wanted to utilize the discount. However, the employees did not know what I was talking about. They said they applied my discount, but they didn't! It is very hot inside and there is no AC. The person who took my order didn't actually place my order and it was also not placed correctly. Thankfully the person who was handing out the orders was paying attention and made sure to clarify what food I actually wanted before having the kitchen rush my order. There was plenty of seating inside an outside but it is not a bearable temperature to be there when it is hot. The food was overall very delicious. If you are heat adverse like me - maybe try delivery as that has been a slam dunk! Previous review: Ordered takeout Fresca bowl no rice add steak with a side of chips and salsa. Nice fast and causal place to grab a drink and some Mexican food if you're in the area. There are some indoor seatings and more outdoor seating. Self serve place. Street parking. Price is about $5 a taco, more expensive than most places. Average need 3-4 taco to be full. It's good food, but not extraordinary for the price. read more

This is a takeout review so can't really comment on ambience but service is really fast- I got my order in ~ 30 mins! Hands down the best breakfast burrito in the area (it's a little on the greasy side but really flavorful with the sauces). But the winner for me are the tacos - every one of them has unique toppings and sauces to match the flavor profile of the meat, and they all come with the single taco shell which means you get more flavorful meat than just carbs! Really solid Mexican food restaurant in the Pearl. Whenever I walked by the smell always gets to me. I didn't stop by for tacos this time but their Portland Sandwich week menu item and it was worth it. Loved the buttery bread and it was stacked with roast pork, avocado, tomatoes, cheese, and sauces - if this ever comes back be sure to come order this as well since it was only $10 and was so filling. You know it's a favorite regardless because it was busy all evening and people picking up their order. This is my go-to taco spot when I'm in the downtown area. Their tacos always hit the spot, the ensalada bowl (with camarones) is also another fan favorite (it's me I'm the fan) and when it comes to recovery after a night out, their breakfast burrito always cures. Everyone here is so awesome, super friendly and fast service. Plenty of outdoor seating and it's central to some of my other favorite places in The Pearl. read more

My son insisted I try the birria tacos. Well...it was actually the margaritas that made my ears perk up. He was right! The birria tacos with the dipped tortilla, gooey cheese oozing out, flavorful braised beef & grilled on a flat top. Yeah. It's REALLY good. The dipping broth was good too. Some places I've had previous had a thin film of oil on top. Which felt too greasy. This one did not. Pretty flavorful. Not too much clove. Just right. I had the traditional margarita with Tajin rim. My son had the strawberry margarita with Tajin rim. Both were VERY good iced (not frozen) margaritas. Located in an alleyway (?) off an old railroad track. There's also a cute bar next door. I kinda scoffed at first to see a salad for $9 in a small bowl that I paid a subsequent $5 extra for shrimp. Now here's the deal, don't let the bowl size fool you. I was full. It was heaped generously with the shrimp add on. Half an avocado, plenty of beans, peppers etc. I left full AND brought home some leftovers. Difficult to find good Mexican food in Portland being from Los Angeles but Papi Chulos delivers staple Mexican dishes for a decent price range. I love their tacos as they come with a lot of protein and the tortillas are good quality and don't fall apart. They top the shrimp with picked red onions and cotija cheese. Their carne asada taco is topped with real guacamole not the green sour cream, which I appreciate. Even their salsa is authentic as it has the perfect kick. I really like their shrimp tacos and their carne asada tacos. My partner loves their birria quesadilla and breakfast burrito.
