    Birria torta

We hadn't been to Kim Jong since they moved to Cartblocks so we decided to check them out. Now, I love KJG, but they were out of almost everything by the time we got there. My husband got something there, but I meandered on over to this cart. I love tortas so much, but I recently have been liking birria too. It can be hard to choose between the two. I had not heard of this cart before, so I decided to check out the menu... sweet swirling asparagus tips!! They have a birria torta! It's like a flipping French dip but with a delicious torta instead. I immediately ordered it. It came with hot sauce and consommé. I couldn't wait to get home to try it. It was amazing!!! So delicious. Absolutely a new fave. I can't wait to go back. So many good carts in this pod!!

Clean, fast, tasty. And they have proper veggie tacos, which tasted great. Chorizo was delicious too. Chicken could be more grilled though. This is inside The Cart Blocks square. There's some shared covered seating in the square. And ample street parking in the 1-2 blocks surrounding it.

BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN PORTLAND Try the birria and horchata! Amazing so delicious and rich flavors! I took one pic of the place and made it look so beautiful! I took a pic of the yummy Birrias and the sauce too! Delicious! But I also got a giant burrito with chicken and shrimp! The quality of the burrito was way beyond a traditional restaurant! I could taste every seasoning it was yummy! The people who work here are so welcoming and queer friendly! I just moved here from California and had Mexican food a lot and this Mexican food is the BEST and worth the extra drive since I moved to Vancouver Washington! They will be seeing a lot me! I will try everything on the menu! They are worth it! Beef Birria

Absolutely fantastic service and even better food! I had a burrito and my friend had a bowl. The flavors were immaculate, the meat was cooked well, and all at a reasonable price! I think if I was on death row I'd want this to be my last meal.

The food was delicious. Decided to stop here for breakfast after waking around downtown. We got the breakfast carna asada burrito and carna asada/chorizo bowl. Both were filling and great. For drinks, we got the strawberry horchata (highly recommend) and a lemonade agua fresca. Definitely worth a stop if you are around downtown. This was a 5-7 min walk from Powell's City of books.

Simple yet tasty tacos amidst a row of food carts. A great snack to grab while roaming the city on foot. The service was friendly and quick!

    Chicken torta!

I've been here at least three different times and this ordered three different items, and the only item I've liked were the quesadillas. The rest of the food I ordered (a chicken burrito and chicken torta) was flavorless, which is a shame because it looked really really good. I never thought I'd complain about the lack of seasonings at an authentic Mexican restaurant, but unfortunately I've discovered that such a thing exists. Ordered: Chicken Torta Deluxe-- This is a classic Mexican spin on the sandwich, with eggs, beans, peppers, tomatoes, cheese, and chicken added all on toasted bread. Though the toasted bread was pretty delicious and flavorful, the rest of the sandwich really lacked any sort of taste. It really needed seasoning and the salsa didn't help at all. Service: Great, they've been very pleasant people to deal with during every visit. Wait Time: 5 minutes. Bill: $

Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

We ordered the Quekas with vegan chorizo and black beans and they were SO good, honestly a standout. The chips and guac were also a hit, and I loved that the guac was actually cold. Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. I will definitely be back!

For the amount of food and the overall experience, I thought it was a great way to experience the restaurant. Ángel took care of us and made the meal even more memorable by telling us the story and inspiration behind each dish as it came out. It made the tasting feel like much more than just trying a bunch of different dishes. I'm definitely a carnivore and usually feel like a meal needs some kind of meat, but surprisingly, my favorite dish was the mole with eggplant and rice. The mole was delicious, and I genuinely didn't miss having meat on the plate. I would happily order that dish again exactly as it was. The tomates en salsa arabe were another standout. I really enjoyed how fresh the dish tasted, especially with the seasonal tomatoes they were using. I also had the carnitas tacos, which had great flavor and texture. For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Also, the Tetela de Requeson, maiz, beans and sprouting broccoli with a house made requeson - kind of like ricotta cheese - very beautifully plated and so delicious. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past. Now I'm watchful and ready to go back and see what the chef Angel is serving up. What else is so special is Republica was a James Beard award nominee too!
