1 star -- and that's only because Yelp won't let me give it a steaming pile emoji. Pappy's Place might as well be called Pappy's Shithole, because from the second we dealt with them, the whole experience felt like we had personally inconvenienced everybody there by having the nerve to show up and spend money. I called my order in ahead, then decided I wanted to sit down and eat it inside. Apparently this was some sort of unforgivable offense, because I was told I "couldn't ever call ahead again" if I was going to eat inside. Imagine being irritated at a customer for ordering food, paying for it, and then wanting to sit in your restaurant and eat it. Wild concept, I know. We paid first, sat down, and then basically ceased to exist. Nobody waited on us, nobody checked on us, nobody acted remotely happy that we were there. So I went out to my truck and got my own UNOPENED bottle of water. Came back inside and was told I couldn't drink that either. At that point it honestly felt less like a restaurant and more like we had accidentally wandered into somebody's living room and they were pissed we hadn't left yet. There was nothing friendly, welcoming, helpful, or pleasant about either interaction. Zero hospitality. Zero effort. Just attitude. My buddy and I finally said screw it, got up, walked out, and left the burger sitting on the table -- already paid for and everything. That should tell you how much we were enjoying ourselves. Maybe the food is somebody's favorite. Good for them. I wouldn't know, because the customer service was bad enough that I have absolutely no interest in ever going back. The one positive thing I can say? Those jalapeños are HOT as hell. So congratulations to Pappy's Place: the peppers were somehow the warmest and friendliest thing in the entire building. read more

An absolute must try if you are in the area! The food and drinks are all made from scratch in house and absolutely amazing! My sweet tea was delicious and not over poweringly sweet as most of them are down south. The strawberry lemonade was great as it was sour not sweet and they use real strawberries for the syrup nothing artificial. I ordered their southeastern burger which was so good the bbq sauce and the crispy onions and burger and cheese all paired so perfectly. The spiral fries were extremely crispy and well salted. Thw bbq sandwich was equally as delicious if not better and paired with sweet potato spiral fries and a caramel dipping sauce OMG amazing. We were so full but managed room for dessert as their ice cream is made fresh in house. The roasted banana and strawberry are absolutely amazing. This might be the best restaurant find in years. I love looking for small local restaurants in my travels, and Pappy's Place has restored my faith in local food! I finally found some pulled pork that wasn't cooked on a pellet grill or in a crock pot. It had an amazing bark on it, was moist, and full of flavor! The Heart Attack Burger can only be described as an adventure. The hand breaded chicken tenders were full of flavor, tender, juicy, and probably the best chicken I've had in a long time. A friend and I went to Scottsboro for an overnight trip so we got here. It was about dinner time. I found Pappy's place on a yelp review. It was definitely your hole in the wall type place maybe they was five tables in there if that it was very small and quaint. It was right by the train track so you could hear the train when it came by. It was a little hot in there, but we pushed through and I got the classic cheeseburger and french fries, which were delicious and my friend got the patty melt which was also delicious she said The bathroom was a little small, probably needed an upgrade. When we walked in, looked like everyone turned around to see if they knew us. This is definitely a place. I would stop at again and get dessert. Their desserts looked really good, but we were so full. We just couldn't have anything else. Finally found it! Had a wonderful lunch yesterday, enjoying the biggest cheeseburger that I've had in some time. The sandwich was packed with extras and was really quite tasty. The added benefit was the homemade potato chips. The were smoking hot, thin and crispy. The locations atmosphere was 'down homie,' quaint and charming, boasting a 91 health review score card on the wall. Did not have time to mingle as I was on a short schedule but, the staff was friendly and very accomodating. One thing that I would look into next time,and please this is not a slam on them, the sandwich was a tad over the top with salt for my taste... this could have been due to the thick pieces of bacon draped on the sandwich. 3.5/5 -- very close to a 4 but just not quite there for me. I actually came here for a late lunch after working nearby on Valentine's Day. It's sort of downtown Scottsboro, sort of not; it's down a side street so not super visible as you're driving along. Parking, for me, was pretty challenging. There are only a couple spots in front of the restaurant itself, and it wasn't clear whether it was okay to park in front of the other businesses (no spots parked with paint) and there was a decent amount of glass / other debris on the ground nearby. So I made the block and parked in a public lot a few streets away and hoofed it over there. The interior part of the restaurant is quite small; I'd be surprised if more than 15-20 people could eat inside at a given time. They do seem to have a patio out back that I'm sure could accommodate more people. I'd probably have preferred to have eaten out there, but I didn't ask and it wasn't offered; instead, I got a two-seater booth in the back of the restaurant, which was fine. There was one other person eating and a few people came in and out for takeout, but it was mostly quiet. Service was pleasant and efficient. Just one girl doing all the work but she managed just fine both waiting tables and taking payments. She even brought me a glass of tea to go for the road. I ordered a chicken tender lunch, which came with two sides. I ordered fries and the vegetable of the day, but they were out of that. They were also out of cornbread, which was my second choice. So I went full-fried-Monty and got fried okra. My food came out in the appropriate amount of time (especially since it was cooked fresh). One of my tenders had a tear in it and the waitress explained it was because the chef wanted to be sure they were cooked completely. I appreciated that. The food was fine! The tenders were cooked nicely and were HUGE! The portions were quite generous and I was able to take some home. The batter had a sort of fish-fry batter flavor to it, which is fine but not my favorite on chicken. The okra was probably the best thing. Not over breaded, very crispy, still tender and green and snappy on the inside. I also enjoyed the clearly house made ranch. Perfect for tenders, fries, and even a piece of okra or two...hehe. The biggest let down was by far the fries. They were absolutely glittering with grease, and the grease never seemed to drain off them, either. They did somehow retain some crispness -- puzzling, given the sheer quantity of grease -- but every bite was extremely oily. It's unusual for me to not finish fries, but I didn't finish these. It sounds like from other reviews burgers and shakes are the thing to get here; I just wasn't feeling it that particular day. First time coming back here in a while. I'm reminded why I love this place. Pappy's wife is a total doll, one of the most genuinely kind people you'll ever meet (she makes their ice cream by the way - roasted banana is off the chain) and they even make their own waffle cones, but they run out fast. Their daughter works the register so, yes this is a family run business in every sense. Their food is uncompromisingly good, and I don't even mind when they run out of a certain item - plenty of others to choose from, and you can't go wrong. Burgers are all good, chicken fingers are great, and Pappy makes his own sauces (the ranch is some of the best around). We are jalapeño loving kind of family so jalapeño Poppers are always on our checklist ( these are bacon wrapped fresh jalapeños and amazing) So, drive by and dive in. You'll enjoy the trip and it's a great food journey. Small place by the tracks, very clean, nothing fancy, very intimate, so I don't think a huge crowd works well, but we usually have 6 or 8 and we manage to get tables. read more

I'm typically not one to leave reviews, and I'm also not hard to please when it comes to dining out or customer service. Unfortunately, our experience at Pappy's Place in Scottsboro, Alabama was one of the worst I've had. My family and I went in for lunch. When we arrived, we had to wait while toys were picked up from the outdoor patio area, which appeared to be a play area for a small child. The child was then taken from the patio and placed in a car seat near the restaurant entrance. We ordered our drinks--one came out incorrect, which wasn't a big deal. We then ordered an appetizer and our meals, and the server assured us the appetizer would come out first. Instead, everything was brought out together. The appetizer was cold, as was the macaroni and cheese. We politely brought this to our server's attention. At that point, another woman came to our table and identified herself as the owner, Andrea Thompson. She spoke to us very rudely and insisted the fries were hot because she personally pulled them. However, the cheese on the fries wasn't even melted, and the macaroni and cheese was clearly cold. We simply asked to swap the macaroni and cheese for fried okra. Instead of accommodating the request, we were given two options: reheat the cold, dried-out macaroni or be given to-go boxes and "call it a day." A child then brought us the to-go boxes, with no ticket or explanation. At that point, we left the food on the table and exited the restaurant. The owner followed us outside and told us we still owed $56. For context, only one wing had been eaten and maybe two or three bites of hamburger steak. She stated we could either pay or she would call the police. We advised her to call them, and the situation was handled from there. Based on other reviews, the food may be great--I wouldn't know, because I didn't get the chance to eat my meal. What I can speak on is the customer service, which was the worst I've experienced in my 33 years of living. I say this as someone who has spent the majority of my career working in customer service. The way the owners carry themselves is shocking, and it's hard to believe they are still in business speaking to customers the way they do. I had the cheeseburger and 100% the best burger I have had in a long time. The meat was fresh and juicy. I wish I had taken pictures just forgot. My husband had the BBQ pork sandwich and he really liked it. The sauce was a little sweet for his liking but that's just a personal preference. It was very clean and service was very good. VERY VERY RUDE. Came in from the POURING rain & my dad accidentally brought in his water container/bottle. After sitting, we were immediately met rudely by the waitress telling us "no outside food or drinks". Once realizing the mistake we apologized and asked if we could set it elsewhere in the restaurant while we ate.(again it was POURING RAIN) To which we were met with a nasty attitude and a demand that it had to be put back in our car or we wouldn't be served. This place is the size of house trailer. The kitchen is wide open to the dining area and my clothes smelled like deep fried food when I got home. Also the bench seat back was rough cut lumber and snagged my knit shirt. The restroom was so dirty my husband was reluctant to use it. My hand-cut french fries were served greasy and cold. I asked for a tea refill because there was barely 8 oz in the 20 oz cup because there was more ice than tea. But the server added more ice for my refill, so I got even less tea than the first serving. Only positive part of my lunch was my grilled chicken breast; it was seasoned and cooked well. My wife and I could not wait to try their burger so after a couple weeks of finally getting over there all the way over from Albertville (just to eat there, going by their photos) we ended up being VERY disappointed. Neither one of us thought it was a top 10 burger. And believe me we have eaten many a good burgers in the surrounding counties. We both got the burger with the bbq sauce, onion straws, bacon, etc. There were barely any onion straws on either burger and the double patties were very thin, not like the photos at all. And the taste of the meat was below average. Burger King does a much better job sadly. No seasoning!! The fries were very good. 3.29 for a Coke. You cannot get water unless you buy bottled for $3+ This after having to pay $13 for a mediocre burger. The chicken fingers and onion rings that someone else got did look good, we both wished we had got them instead but now after the burger experience and going around smelling like grease the rest of the day (more on that in a sec) we doubt that we will ever be back again. And now the grease smell. As soon as we walked in we were knocked down with that old greasy hole in the wall type smell, along with smoke to go along with it from time to time. Bad ventilation problem to say the least. Every store we went into for the rest of the day we could smell it on our clothes pretty strongly, made us pretty paranoid to other people like we only washed our clothes once a year and that we cooked in them all the time. To sum it all up: Too expensive for small mediocre tasting burger, no free water, and greasy atmosphere. And we also noticed that the food critics that gave this place raving reviews did so AFTER the owners knew they were coming. Seriously, this is the best food you will get in the Scottsboro area. They are family owned and operated. We had the cheese curds with homemade ranch for our appetizer. For dinner, my husband had the ribeye with homemade fries. I had the chopped steak with onions and macaroni and cheese. The steaks did not need anything! No steak sauce needed here. Seasoned perfectly and cooked on a charcoal grill. It was so good! We had their homemade ice cream for dessert. Very good. Friendly staff. The owner/chef even came out to meet us.
