But if you are looking for some good food at reasonable prices with generous portions, this is your spot. I randomly-ish stopped here and am glad that I did. The person taking my order was attentive and patient with answering my questions. I went with a gyro meal. The meat was nicely seasoned and the serving size was more than enough. Coupon scam!!!!!!!!!! 10/2021 Counter person named Kattiana Pulled up this location as I have enjoyed the Minneapolis location in the past. They usually have 2 or 3 coupons on the website and I ordered 3 hot dogs. I told her I had a coupon for "buy 2, get a 3rd free" and showed it to her on my phone. They only made 2 hot dogs and struggling with communications, she asked the cook what she should do. After a brief conversation in Spanish, she then told me the coupon is no good unless I print it. No where was this posted as a requirement. They do state only 1 coupon can be be used but nothing about printing of a coupon for them to accept it. Completely embarrassing in front of other customers for me trying to communicate with them to honor their companies coupon, so I let them bully me into submission. I'll stick to the Minneapolis location as they honor their companies coupons. read more

Not bad! I grew up near Chicago so I know a good Chicago dog/beef/Polish. I tried a Chicago dog and a gyro. The gyro was pretty good - big gyro with lots of meat and toppings. Tasty. The Chicago dog was not traditional, but the ingredients were fresh and it was a large dog. There was giardiniera on the Chicago dog which is not traditional, but I like giardiniera so I wasn't too mad about it. It did overpower the rest of the flavors, though. I would try it again but I would really prefer the traditional toppings on the Chicago dog! read more

I had a gyro with fries and 4 whole chicken wings. The fries were fantastic. The chicken wings were very tasty and cooked perfectly. They were a little small though. The gyro was a solid gyro. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely better than most. The menu is kind of hard to know what's going on. They have a gyro, a gyro platter and a gyro plate. I went to this place because of two reasons... 1. the Yelp reviews were almost so i wanted to see what it was all about 2. I was starving and had just gone to U of M Family Physicians for a check up down the road.... I asked the nurses if they had recommendations... She said Pappy's. So we went! Very New Yorker service... No real nicities but straight business... Here's your food fast and go away kind of attitude. I had the Chessesteak... made to order. Yum. Fries were crispy! You can order anything from this restaurant and get a good deal everything is made fresh and good we order the 10 piece chicken wings deal and also the catfish deal with the chicken wings. Food was fine but little bait and switch going on with the pricing. Plus they now add an "additional food cost" to the bill. For example, two dogs, fries and soda is $7.99 on the menu they have in their entry way and that is that same price shows up online but they charge $8.98 in the restaurant. Cheese curds are $3.69 on the menu, they charge $5.98. I had a $2 off coupon from a text coupon but they also added an additional food cast charge of $1.15. I ordered online, and received a confirmation that with my $2 off, my total was $9.90 but when went to pick it up, I was charged $14.95. So my bill was almost $5 more than expected. Next time, I'll drive to Portillos in Roseville. read more

This is really, really good stuff. I just moved to the neighborhood and have already tried a half dozen items. Their burgers, dogs, polish sausage, Philly cheesesteak, and even their walleye are excellent. I can't wait to check out the rest of their menu! Other reviews dissing the place don't seem familiar with Chicagoland style food, but that's okay. It's not for everyone. While Pappy's ain't Portillo's or Jimmy Red Hots, it's damn good Chicago-style fare at an excellent price. If you dig that type of thing, check this place out. You'll love it. read more

I think that Pappys is tasty and I would say if your in the mood for this kind of food this is the place to come. The prices are average and the food is greasy and delicious just like most chicago style eateries. The wait can be a little long at times and I must agree David D that the front counter people seem to have some issues with getting everything straight. I say call ahead if possible. Gotta go five star on this one. I was just there with my son and his fiancé and everything we ordered was fantastic! Although it has a fast food atmosphere and not much for ambiance, I wouldn't have expected anything more. It's a ghetto-style eatery, but it was clean and well maintained and the staff was friendly. I had the gyro and it's exactly what I would expect in a good quality gyro. They even put the cucumber (dill? - I forget) sauce on the side which I really appreciated. The sandwich was overflowing and had plenty of gyro meat. My son ordered the pizza pocket, although small it tasted fantastic. He also ordered the hush puppys and they were amazing. His fiancé ordered the mafia sandwich and she said that was delicious as well. For dessert, my son ordered the lemon cake to go and it was phenomenal! Granted, it was in a plastic wrapper and was not made by Pappy's, but he shared a little with me and Wow! TIP: Don't go for the "value meal". I've visited Pappy's a few times since I work in the area. The food is good, and as it says, a lot like a Chicago Style Eatery. Not real high quality stuff, but good enough for the price. Their Italian Beef can be a little sweaty, but still goes down great. Their portions are also really generous, which keeps me full. It's always busy, and it seems they have trouble keeping the place clean at times. And generally don't have the best time keeping track of what they say when I order, but they haven't screwed up. The cheap food, effort they put forth, and friendliness keeps me coming back. read more

Nom Nom Nom! I had a throughly heart-stopping cheap meal at Pappy's. For less than $4 I got a pizza puff, fries and a drink. My PIC had a 2 Chicago Dogs, fries and a drink for about $7. He said the Chicago dog was better than Chris & Rob's, but not as good as the Wienery. The pizza puff is a gooey messy, and awful for you; which of course means it's absolutly delicious. The fries are as good as you can get without being hand-cut. This isn't a place we'd go often, just because it's on the East Side, but the hours are much more generous than most of our other favorites, which may lead to late-night Chicago dog trips across town. read more

I love Italian Beef and am always looking for new places that sell it. Unfortunately, most places outside of Chicago have not met my expectations. Pappy's did! I have been here several times, and all of the times were really good until this last time I visited. The wings have gotten really small over the years, and the food quality wasn't that great. The service wasn't bad at all, but it's always been fairly good, with that being said I can only say what I know to be true. We've driven past Pappy's numerous times on the way to and from church, and the siren call of the Vienna Beef poster has been nagging me since I first saw it. Today after church I was craving a Maxwell Street Polish, so we gave in. The Polish was decent, though the bun was a little soggy. The Chicago dog was also passable, with all the necessary toppings, but I was a bit disappointed that the dog was without natural casing. Nothing you put on a hot dog can make up for the absence of that juicy snap. Husband seemed to enjoy his Pappy's burger, which is just a burger with gyro meat on top. The fries were perfectly cooked, but they were ruined with WAY too much salt. It's hot today, so I gave in to the lure of the slushie machine, but I regretted my decision five slurp later when all the flavor was gone from my ice. The atmosphere of the place is nothing spectacular, but nothing really bad either. It's just a plastic-boothed neighborhood dive. They were playing the KDWB a bit loudly for my comfort, but the classic Atari game in the corner lent the place a little cred. We'll probably go back if we're hungry after church again, but Pappy's doesn't stack up to some of the other Chicago-style eateries in town. Alot of fried food but its made very well and not greasy. The chicken tenders, fries and shrimp are all very good. Salads, coleslaw and gyros are also made very well. Good value for the money. Not the healthiest but you get a ton of food for the money. read more

I was not at all impressed with their overly greasy, lacking in flavor, gyros. The fries were good, but that is about the only positive thing about the food. My wife had a Chicago dog which she described as "Meh. I've experienced better." Will not be going there again because just from the internal appearance, it didn't seem like a very clean place. I don't exactly expect to see it on Kitchen Nightmares at some point, so don't get me wrong. Pappys on whitebear sent my order an hour late and then sent the wrong order. Dont get their food. The cust service is horrible.

Food is OK, but service is no good, call ahead with an order and they were rude on the phone. I show up 20 minutes later and the food has not been started. Had it been busy at the time I would have understood the late start but there were three other people there. To top it off when I went through the order I had to go back in to get two other orders they must have forgotten in the rush. read more

Pappy's is a terrific little restaurant on St. Paul's east side. If you are a fan of Chicagoland foods, you'll come to love this little dive. The foods I have tried are Chicago dogs, Italian beef (wet w/giardinara!), gyros, italian beef w/an italian sausage stuffed in it, cheesesteak and burgers are all amazing. Their fries are terrific too. Their big Billy Burger is 2- 1/3 lb patties and defeated my bottomless pit of a 14 yr old. The service is always friendly and the staff doesn't seem to change much, so it must be an OK place to work. I only go to Pappy's during the day- it's a blue collar to white collar lunch crowd. At night when I look in, the customers look like Chicago has dumped a load of it's finest thugs on poor St. Paul and it's take out only for this cat. Prices are very reasonable, parking lot is small but sufficient and it's easily bus accessible. Try this joint, you won't be sorry! read more
