I had to get some notarized papers a couple of times and the staff acommodate it me as to not charge me for redoing them, provided scanning services, paid for a copy I had to attach. I went to the Parcel Room this week in order to inquire about whether or not they are authorized to ship small arms ammunition. The associate informed me that unfortunately the Parcel Room couldn't ship ammunition. I responded " not a problem, I will just head up the road to the UPS facility to ship my ammunition, I just need to get some packing supplies" After speaking with her manager, the associate informed me that they "would not sell me any packing material or boxes." A bit alarmed, I asked why? She said they would not sell to me because I would use the boxes to ship ammunition (something completely legal by the way through UPS and FedEx). I explained that I understand that I will need to ship directly from the carrier, but still did not understand why they would refuse to sell me packing supplies and boxes!!!! I mean was this some sort of political statement? Help a girl out, I just wanted to buy boxes and ship my ammunition through the carrier the completely legal way! Listen, I realize that businesses reserve the right to refuse service; however... I did nothing wrong, and nothing illegal.. So why was I treated like a criminal? Obviously i will never return there; it was a truly humiliating experience, being refused service in such a way in front of staff and customers. read more

Updated from my original 5-star review. They are extremely overpriced for shipping! Their costs are way higher than USPS and UPS. I am done with them. I used to like them, but they have gotten out of control with jacking up shipping costs. They changed me $13.50 for a one once package and then wanted to charge me $15.00 to mail a smaller tiny 1 ounce weight box priority! I went to the post office instead and sure enough the packages were were cheaper to mail it the same. They also wanted to make me open up and unwrap all my xmas gift packages for my family to remove a small make up item when all my gifts were wrapped and ready to go. They claimed one of the items is prohibited which according to the USPS website, is only prohibited internationally. Another time they charged me for a fax that they claimed went through and then when I got home I noticed the confirmation they gave me said that the fax did not go through, so I paid for nothing. My husband went there another time to drop off a poster that was prepaid shipping and they claimed they couldn't send it because the label was wrapped around the tube and the part that said "postage paid" wasn't showing... he had to tell them to scan it for proof.... Also they questioned what was in a poster tube and they gave him a hard time about knowing exactly what it was...it was in a POSTER tube.... I'm done with them. read more

Jeff, the owner, read my last, one-star review. He couldn't contact me to get the details of the shipment, and it was not in my name. So, he drilled down into about three or four months of transaction data and identified the shipment--how, I cannot imagine. He confirmed that we were overcharged. He contacted my girlfriend, apologized, and refunded the overcharge. It doesn't get better than that. Moreover, they are very friendly and good at what they do. We will go back. read more

My wife went back east to deal with her fathers personal effects in May 2013. In cleaning out his home, there were many old paintings and other antique family items that we wanted to preserve. We had to have these shipped from Portsmouth to the Bay Area - and as fragile, irreplaceable items, we were concerned about how to do this right. Cut to the Parcel Room. They came recommended to my wife. She called them and they came out to size things up. Then they came back with a van to retrieve the items. A few weeks later, everything arrived, palleted and on a truck. As we unwrapped and unpacked each item, one thing was clear - they absolutely know what they are doing. Each item was in perfect condition - paintings and antiques that are at least a couple hundred years ... all without a scratch. Amazing! If you need something shipped carefully, with the expectation that it will arrive in exactly the same condition, then you should look no further than the Parcel Room. I have been in this place twice to try and ship a package. The first time, I was asked if I had shipped anything from there before. I replied that I hadn't so they wanted me to fill out a lengthy form. I allowed that this was absurd and I left. I went in the other day to send a package back to Amazon with their label attached as I was shopping in the area. The man looked at it and said the label was unscannable. He would print another but it would cost me $2.00. I then went to the local UPS store and they happily took my return and manually typed in the bar code. The Parcel Room is allegedly a service oriented business, but with service like that, I'm surprised they are still in existence! A one star rating is too good for this place! read more

Watch out for their pricing, make sure you've got a ballpark of what shipping your item should cost before you walk in here. Tried to ship a box that was 26x26x3, and weighed a shade under 5 lbs. They quoted me about $47 for UPS/Fedex, and $38 for USPS. Thankfully I had checked all 3 carriers sites before leaving to head to their location and each one quoted me about $20 on their respective sites. The explanation I was given in the store was that they "don't offer every rate" that each carrier has on their site. Seems like a BS excuse for an upcharge to me, but I don't know what their agreements are with the carriers. This was all after I went through the trouble of having them add me in their system as a customer, etc. Wasted 10 minutes between the form and the employee helping out someone else while I filled out the form which resulted in me waiting for her to finish that transaction before coming back to me. Drove 1/4 mile up the road to the UPS store, cost me $19.97 top ship the box in about 3 minutes. Can't vouch for the other services they offer, but if you've already got it boxed and ready to go, head straight to the source for shipping, you'll save yourself 50%+ over Parcel Room's prices. read more

Horrible Customer Service! I went to the Parcel Room to rent a mailbox. I mentioned to the associate that I needed to rent a mailbox because I was in-between places and staying with friends temporarily. I had multiple photo ID's ready for the US Postal Services' PS Form 1583: driver's license, university ID, US passport, US military ID, all current. Not good enough for the Parcel Room. The associate told me, "Your current address must be ON your ID card or you must have a utility bill." I had just mentioned I was in between places, so she would not accept the address on my driver's license, and it would be difficult to find a utility bill to prove that I live on my friend's couch. I rent mailboxes all the time as I move often and no one has ever given me a problem, so I pulled up the PS Form 1583 on my phone. Now, PS Form 1583 block 8 reads, "One [identification] must contain a photo of the addressee(s)." Somehow the Parcel Room had interpreted this to mean a photo ID with an address printed on it. Nowhere on PS Form 1583 does it even request written proof of address, so it is strange that this level of verification would be required. I pointed this out to the associate, who I must now assume to be illiterate because she just reiterated, "Your CURRENT address must be ON your ID. We know it has to, because the owner is a lawyer." Don't you love lawyers? Lawyers are somehow better than the rest of us plebeian non-lawyer types. Of course a mailbox rental could be used for fraudulent activity but that is why two forms of ID are required. If the Parcel Room followed the instructions as written on PS Form 1583, they could not be held liable for the actions of their clients. The identification requirement is only a means for law enforcement to discover the true identity of the mailbox renter for further investigation. I found the UPS store just a few blocks away has better prices and helpful customer service. read more

Exceptional service from start to finish. I purchased two quite fragile, 200-year-old paintings at auction and needed them shipped from Portsmouth to my home in Houston, Texas. I was very worried, but both the auction house and Jeff at the Parcel Room assured me everything would be fine. And fine it was! I have never had a shipper take such care to block and wrap and cushion. The huge box arrived less than a week after drop off - during torrential rains and flooding - and everything is in pristine condition, not a scratch, owing to the Parcel Room's know-how and care. I have been bringing in some very odd sized things to be shipped lately and will only use the Parcel Room. They are the only ones that actually came out of the store and helped me unload my car! They gave me every possible cost and option to ship and really took their time with me- I never felt rushed to make a decision. I was actually in the store when a customer came in to ship something that they refused to reveal what it was. The staff was friendly but direct and the store had to refuse to ship it. It is perfectly clear to me that these folks follow the letter of the law in what can be shipped and what can not be. It is after all their livelihood. If they were to ship something illegally it could potentially end their business with fines and potential jail time. I don't understand why people don't get that. Customer left unhappy and probably left a nasty yelp but I appreciate a business that does the right thing and isn't just about the money. I'll be back! read more

Your time is valuable. Do not waste it trying to accomplish anything at the Parcel Room. My recommendation is that you go directly to the source of the services you require, i.e., UPS, FedEx / FedEx Kinkos or the Post Office. The clip boards, the forms and the inefficiencies of the people who work there are absurd. I was (not) being helped by one employee who was repeatedly interrupted by two other employees who didn't know what they were doing. That is terrible customer service. Help one person at a time. Don't make customers wait even longer than they already have to. If you need a notary public, avoid at all costs. Their knowledge and willingness to help customers is extremely limited. I have tried three times over the last six years to utilize the services of the Parcel Room and all three times I left empty handed and completely frustrated.
