We have lived in seven states so I have used a lot of different doctors and this is an excellent practice with great staff. Dr. Born finally explained clearly my problem and gave several ways of treating it. Yes there was a bit of waiting but there was the covid staff shortage mess still hanging around and then the flu outbreak. Through all of this the staff were friendly, helpful and positive. I am very glad a local friend suggested this hidden gem of an independent clinic. In 1997, being somewhat educated about vaccines by a friend whose brother was a chiropractor, I FOUGHT the office staff at this practice for my baby to receive the safer IPV instead of the OPV and the DTaP instead of the DTP. (Both the OPV and DTP were standard at that time) Within 24 hours of receiving these two shots of four diseases all at once, my 9 month old baby began to experience a cascade of disturbing symptoms. By the time I called the office, this child had a fever, restlessness, sleeplessness, was refusing to nurse, and, worst of all, was ALMOST CONSTANTLY SCREAMING. My baby was acting as if they were in horrible pain, and I could do nothing. "That high-pitched and inconsolable screaming after vaccination has a name: it's called the 'DTAP Scream'. Your child's brain is swelling inside their skull. The child is having a known vaccine reaction called encephalitis." This was my FIRST, much-longed-for child, conceived after years of infertility and traumatic fertility treatments. I called Parchment Family Practice almost hysterical, convinced that my baby was having a negative vaccine reaction. I remember that it was a Friday, and that Dr. Eric Born himself took almost all day to call me back. What he said, in an exasperated and condescending tone, as near as I can remember, was "NO, your baby is NOT having a vaccine reaction. Even if they die over the weekend, when I do the autopsy on Monday, I'll prove that to you." Over the course of the weekend, my child's entire body proceeded to turn fire-engine red. Despite being exhausted and in obvious pain, they were absolutely inconsolable. I was afraid to do anything; afraid to leave their side; afraid to go to more allopaths who didn't seem to believe me anyway and who my gut said could not stop what was happening and would probably make everything worse. Finally, after over 36 hours of this nightmare, my baby's eyes got a glassy, expressionless look (even sometimes rolling half back) and quickly feel asleep. Even though I was relieved, I was also truly, seriously afraid my baby never wake up again. I have since learned in online forums that at least 17 other children across the United States really didn't wake up again. Their parents believed the reason they died was a because of a bad batch of DTaP vaccines which came out in late 1996 and early 1997. Our entire family has also had DNA tests done to confirm my suspicion that we have the compound MTHFR gene mutation, which translations as an inability or extreme difficulty in detoxifying from the kind of substances used in vaccines. I am convinced that my baby DID experience a vaccine reaction, and that Dr. Born really IS an insensitive ass. I shudder to think what might have happened to that child, and to the rest of my children, if I had not walked away from this practice and never come back. After that hell of a weekend, if I had kept blindly trusting the Dr. Born and his staff at Parchment Family Practice - despite their hubris and condescending disrespect - I honestly believe this particular child would have died or been permanently injured after their next vaccination. read more

Awful. My appointment with Dr. Born was to establish primary care, as a patient with a fragrance-reactive disability. He says he treats MCS, but the entire office was scented, and his staff is allowed to wear fragranced products. That's like handing out cigarettes at the lung doctor's office....stupid. During the exam, he insisted that I remove my mask (my only protection against the fragrances in his office), even though I repeatedly told him that there was scent in the room. When I removed my mask for the exam, the scent from the room contaminated my mask and rendered it unusable, which means I could not stay in the room because I could not breathe. I had to flee the office before the exam was complete just so I could breathe. I literally had to run outside to the fresh air because he forced me to remove my mask, despite my protests. The exam not being completed, yet he miraculously had a treatment plan for me that included only services that profited him directly. I never heard from him again; he didn't check on my safety or even ask why I left abruptly...nothing. The only contact their office made was to get the billing information so they could get paid. There was no concern for me as a patient whatsoever. They also fraudulently billed my insurance for a higher level of service that was not performed. I will not let anyone I know see this office for care, and I will never return. read more

I have been a patient here for over 10 years, Dr. Born was the only Doctor that actually figured out what was wrong with my mom about 12 years ago. Every other Doctor was giving her more and more scripts to just cover the symptoms. I will say since ObamaCare (thanks to you idiots who voted for him) Dr. Borns practice has seemed to change some things-he is not as quick diagnosing you now. But when you have the government with their hand in everything you are doing you have to change your ways. Dr. Born would rather have you try other things besides prescriptions-which is not a bad thing. Yes some of it can get pricey, but the human body was not made to digest and break down the stuff pharmacies make. He is also big on food allergy testing, which if you keep up with any type of nutrition you know more and more people are developing food allergies due to the "stuff" they put into all the food. Any who-Dr. Born has always helped me, even when I moved out of state when I was 18 to go to college. In fact I have not lived in MI since 2005 and I still see him once a year for an annual check and to renew my migraine meds (this is something no amount of vitamins will get rid of). It can be tough to book an appointment-so plan in advance. The ladies are always friendly with me and the nurses always call me back when I have questions. His wife loves the color purple, so be prepared to walk into a waiting room that is all purple-with a fish tank! He will talk to you like a real person and get to know you so he can figure out what is going on, but he is able abrupt. read more

I have gone to Parchment Family Practice for about 3 years now. Now I do not know WHY I have put up with this level of incompetence and unprofessionalism for so long. The office is unorganized and not proactive at all. They do not care about patients or the patient experience at all. There will be no surveys or opportunities for your input. They are not interested in bettering their process for their benefit or yours. They do not do refills on request from pharmacies, so you have to manually call in to confirm. And they do not inform you of this process, so you are in the lurch when you think you are getting a refill. Communication on what the process for anything is not communicated. I have been misdiagnosed more than once, much to my pain and detriment on multiple occasions. For simple items that should have been a knowledge area for the doctor. He is NOT a functioning of informed DO. Adjustments done were not successful, even after repeated tries, and I didn't know until I went to a REAL chiropractor who, after months of being in pain, successfully identified and treated my condition in a matter of minutes. Inexcusable. Please do not waste your time or your precious health on this provider or this office. It has been nothing but painful, literally and figuratively. And this is true of all providers there. What a debacle! I clearly believe in giving many chances. I am so disappointed and want to save others the pain and disappointment, time and cost. On my last and final conversation with them they accused me of not taking responsibility for my own health. I am DONE! read more

Came back to update that I've had several more coworkers tell me about the various reasons that they left this practice, all of them having issues that piled up until they couldn't stand the fact that they weren't being treated appropriately, rather strung along from one attempt at a treatment to another. There is one person that I work with who continues to see Dr. Born, but by 'see', it's more of an appointment every few years when she's really sick. I work in one of the local hospitals, so we're all quite familiar with what is appropriate v. non-appropriate treatment, and when it is time to seek another opinion. The debate between MD and DO is an eternal battle that will never have an end to it, but there are poor DO's just like there are poor MD's. I've been under the questionable care of a MD (pediatrician) and DO (Dr. Born), and now I see an internal med MD. The contrast between the care received through Parchment Family Practice and the practice I am with now is night and day. And my current doc would never push meds, he goes out of his way to explain exactly why he is NOT considering antibiotics or pain medication, for example, as part of the treatment for my ailments. Funny that a 'quick-fix doctor' was mentioned; I visited Dr. Born a couple of years after I started college to discuss my emotional state with him. He asked me if I felt sad, handed me an evaluation to rank feelings on (identical to something that you would find in an online quiz), looked at it, and then told me that the thing he recommended was for me to start a holistic approach (which I am all for, at least to try and see if it will help the issue). The holistic approach was to purchase pills that were only sold through his practice, by the way. But he never asked about self-harm, he never asked if I wanted to see someone to talk with. And no follow-up appointment was recommended. Years later, when I finally had enough and sought out true help, I was diagnosed with a form of depression, placed on medication, and have been feeling fairly great ever since then. read more

Have always been happy with the care, but deeply disappointed in office management. It is not unusual to wait for an hour or longer for a scheduled appointment. Every patient understands that emergencies happen, a little consideration for the value of patients time would go a long way. The technology exists to text or call a patient to let them know. Instead they allow patients to arrive on time and then leave them to wait for hours. Very disrespectful and seriously inexcusable. This does not happen at any other practice I visit. read more

This is really the best place in town to go. Most doctors spend their time trying to find the right pills for the job. Dr. Born's practice is all about diet and lifestyle -- through, I have some favorite pills too. I think we go to PFP about once a week, for one reason or another as we have a couple kids and kids are always coming up with some novel new thing. Sarah P. is completely wrong. Several of my wife's coworkers go there too, and far from fed up, the consensus is that his practice is the little secret of Kalamazoo life. Go there, even if it's a bit of drive, it's worth it. More importantly, he's not a shrink. If you go to a GP expecting mental health care then your doing it wrong. How the hell is that his fault? My wife suffers from mild depression. His office recommended she see someone and also helped to tune her meds over the years. I can easily believe that Sarah P had a bad experience, but I'm more inclined to believe it was a personality conflict or some other type of communication failure. I cannot accept that PFP is a bad place to go for any reason, although I can accept that it's an inappropriate choice for mental health care. It took me 5 years and 5 docs once I moved to Kalamazoo to find a doc I liked. Once found, I kinda want others to go to the same place. Do not listen to Sarah P., she's simply incorrect. read more

The doctors are great but the office staff needs an attitude adjustment. They are inconsiderate and get very annoyed whenever they have to answer the phones (especially if it's late in the day). If you ever have a question that is more complicated than a yes or no answer they'll transfer you to a machine and pass the buck on to someone else. I've had nothing but great experiences with Dr.Born. I highly recommend him as long as you don't mind the awful secretaries that clearly hate interaction with other people. read more

I was looking forward to seeing Dr. Born as he was recommended to me as someone who also included alternative medicine. I waited one and a half hours in a very stuffy room with a radio station "music" piped in, too loudly. The receptionist seemed not very well educated, but never mind, I wasn't going there to see her, however the ensuing talk with the office manager (also a slovenly appearance) gave me further doubts as the education of Dr. Born. I pushed that aside withholding judgement until I could see him. When I was called in to have my "vitals" taken and then informed, upon asking, that it would be a while longer before seeing the doctor, I said I could wait no longer and went to make an appointment for a date in the future. I eventually succeeded in making that date though it took some time for the receptionist to understand why I wanted a date so far in advance. I explained that I have my own practice to attend to, a practice where patients aren't kept waiting. I was not sick, I was coming to establish a family physician (having recently moved here. The next day I received a phone call saying "the doctor does not want to see you." When asked the reasoning the same sentence was "The doctor does not want to see you." Apparently "the doctor" is always right which affirmed my reaction to the bad atmosphere, the discomfort of the waiting room and the long wait when I keep a strict schedule. This shows a lack of respect for the patient, and I fear the sloppy manners and general "low class" atmosphere of the practice proved I was correct in judging the book by the cover. First, I think Dr. Born is a good doctor and a good person. Wants to spend time with patients; keeps up on diagnostic trends and that has helped me. That said, he has no business being in business. His business is disorganized, not patient focused, and his staff is either overworked or undertrained. The doctor is often running late. On one occasion after being told the doctor was running late, I decided to wait just to see how late he was running. 2 hours and 45 minutes later, I informed the front desk that I was leaving and they seemed miffed that I hadn't left already. I never got a phone call to reschedule or to even just apologize. If you call there, you will get a call tree, no matter what button you push you will either go into an endless loop or asked to leave a message that will not be returned. The prevailing answer from the staff to anything you want them to do, is to explain to you why they cannot do that. Eph 4:29 says "... Let everything you say be good and helpful..." I feel badly about leaving this negative review but I feel more of an obligation to my fellow man. If you're about to step into a hole, I will yell "watch out!" read more

Come to find out it was incompetence. As a diabetic, and a chronic lymphocytic leukemia patient the new doctor immediately scheduled him for blood work, a pneumonia shot, and referred him to a podiatrist, an ophthalmologist, and an oncologist. You would think doctor Born would have noticed that his 82 year old diabetic, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia patient may need to check his feet, eyes and white blood cell count. But he didn't. This is why family is important, I am glad I am now in town to help dad and make sure he finds a good doctor. read more

Sarah Munch was 40 minutes late for a follow-up appointment I had regarding a food allergy test I had done there. I did not have ample time to discuss the results as she had to move onto her next appointment. I was billed for a full follow-up visit. I called and spoke to the office manager Ms. Born who said they were not willing to adjust the cost I was billed and proceeded to tell me that if I was not happy, there are other medical providers out there. I was completely offended by that, as I already have another healthcare provider but I was looking for a different type of service (food allergy test) through Parchment Family Practice. Ms. Born the office manager than said "we are all set here" and hung up on me. This treatment was totally unacceptable and I would NOT recommend anyone attend this practice. read more

I don't tend to leave reviews, but in this case I have to leave a rebuttal to Sarah P.'s very negative review. My family has been going to Parchment Family Practice for several years and I recommend them to everyone I know who's looking for a family physician. We typically see Jeff or Sarah instead of Eric, but I know they all communicate with each other well and work under the same principles. Perhaps not everyone is comfortable with a D.O.'s approach to medicine - treating the whole body/lifestyle instead of putting a band-aid on individual symptoms. This differs greatly from most doctors in the area which I have found to get their prescription pads out as soon as they walk in the door... to give you whatever new pill the pharm's pushing this week. If you're looking for a quick-fix doctor that does not care about your total long-term health & well-being, then Parchment Family Practice is NOT for you! Otherwise, I think you'd be very happy with their services, as am I. read more
