Since I had no history for my new partner in crime, I took advantage of their introductory offer for a "free" first appointment, sort of lets meet. The front staff was welcoming. The wait was reasonable. The tech came in brought us into an exam room we informed her we needed to get a baseline on health and vaccinations Karina asked the all important probing questions. Then the vet came in and she took time to perform the 120 point new vehicle check. Once she was done with the initial check up she went over a game plan. As it turned out my dog was mostly caught up with all his vaccinations. My big concern was flea, tick, and heartworm since I did not have any preventive meds and needed to get. At no point did I feel pressured to do anything additional everything was clearly explained. My only issue which mirrors other comments is the costs. Final thought, the facility was very clean and well lit, always a good sign!

Both times we saw Dr. Morgan. He spent a lot of time explaining everything to us and making sure all of our questions were answered. He was very good with Rudy, who is by nature an anxious dog. The soft tissue sarcoma surgery was a complete success, with no recurrence of the cancer for 3+ years. We are still deciding how to proceed with the malignant melanoma. I highly recomment CUVS. They are compassionate, professional, and highly skilled veterinary doctors.

My poor sweet cat, Artemis, died in agony less than 24 hours after a procedure at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists. She was hospitalized multiple times for evaluation of weight loss and GI disease. On June 16, she underwent endoscopy with biopsies and a liver FNA with Dr. Forman. I was told the procedure was uncomplicated and that she was stable and good to go home. This was strike 1, they discharged her too soon. After discharge, she was clearly not okay. On the drive home, I noticed intermittent wheezing. Once home, she became progressively lethargic, hid from us, vomited, had worsening abdominal distension, and appeared to be struggling to breathe. I called the hospital because I was concerned about her respiratory status. I was told these signs could be related to anesthesia and her anti-nausea meds wearing off and that I should monitor her. As a physician, I knew better. I ignored that advice and brought her back to the ER, which I ultimately regret. In the ER, I met Dr. Zenobya Clarke, who was taking "care" of Artemis. She confirmed that she was in respiratory distress and gave her butorphanol (FYI, pet owners cannot observe the treatments, pets are taken to a back room while we are made to wait in a separate room for updates). She disclosed that she accidentally gave "double" the dose, and when I asked her for the exact amount, she said she gave 1 mg/kg of body weight, when the typical dose is 0.2 mg/kg. So she overdosed her by 5 times, not double like she said. When I mentioned that, she acted flippantly like it was no big deal. Strike 2. When I received her medical records after her death, turns out she had actually given 2 mg/kg, so she gave 10 times the amount in an already sick cat. A medication error of that magnitude should never happen. She told me Artemis would be admitted to the ICU and said she looked stable so I could go home. I asked to visit her before I left and noticed that she was open-mouthed breathing and in terrible condition. She was bradycardic and hypotensive on the monitor, none of which was mentioned to me. Strike 3. The vet swore she looked ok just before, which I find hard to believe. I had to point out how unstable she looked. Throughout the visit, Dr. Clarke was callous, brushed off her errors, and seemed like she did not know what she was doing. I found out after the fact that she was a resident with seemingly no oversight. Despite treatment, Artemis' condition rapidly deteriorated. She developed severe respiratory distress, began vomiting blood, and we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her to end her suffering. She was the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate cat, and to see her die in such a horrific way was devastating. I understand that not every patient can be saved. What I cannot understand is how a patient who was reportedly stable enough for discharge could deteriorate so dramatically within hours, why my concerns about her breathing after discharge were dismissed initially, and how a 10-fold medication overdose occurred during her care. Instead of celebrating my upcoming wedding in a few days, I was forced to say goodbye to the sweetest cat I have ever known. I am left with profound grief, unanswered questions, and a complete loss of trust in a hospital I believed would provide the highest level of care. On top of that, I spent almost $15K at Cornell only for them to ultimately cause her death at their neglect. Artemis trusted me and willingly went into her carrier. I had to return home with an empty carrier and a broken heart.

Nobody said one word about needing a separate "new patient" appointment. Then his paw started bleeding. We called for help and were flatly told the other office "couldn't take him" because he'd never been seen as a new patient, despite the fact that he absolutely had been. A dog in pain got turned away over an internal paperwork technicality that took their own staff thirty seconds to explain, if anyone had bothered. Also, my other dog has been a patient for years so they knew me. When we pushed back, the vet stated that she never checked him. Even though she had him on the table?!?! I figured she would say let him come in to see the paw. That's a practice choosing to protect itself over a customer whose dog needed care. Two offices that can't sync a patient file is a system failure. Refusing to own it when it hurts an animal is a choice. We're done, both dogs are gone, and so is any recommendation from us.

Made the appointment and all went well. No definitive diagnosis but a course of action had been implemented. About 6 weeks later I received an email describing symptoms for canine osteoarthritis. I made a call to discuss these symptoms which my dog was presenting. A week went by and no call. Bond Vet Rye Brook had just opened so I figured I would give them a shot. The staff was great. The vet Dr. Devery was very patient and thorough. We decided to continue with the anti inflammatory as well as pain killers for a short time. Last week was the end of the drugs and a call was made to discuss further treatment if necessary. Today I met with Dr Williams who also took time to check out my girl and it was decided since she has shown signs of improvement the best course of action was to maintain limited activity and make sure she stays comfortable. The whole experience was stress free. Got to say currently I am happy with them let's see if this will be a long happy relationship.

Unfortunately, my dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur which I was unaware of, so they did not feel comfortable giving her the sedation she needed to take proper X-rays of a possible hip or lower back injury, which was a bit concerning. We did have a long wait, but to be fair, it was a rough night there and there were pets there with more significant injuries, so I appreciated their prioritizing them. They were able to administer pain meds though, which helped my dog feel much more comfortable overnight until I get her in to see her regular vet the following day. The bill was a bit high for just a preliminary evaluation, a basic cbc, and one shot of pain killer but it was worth having some peace of mind that my dog was seen and in far less discomfort overnight. I would definitely go back if I needed to, as the care she received was prudent and they were honest with me about their concerns about the risk of sedation for my particular dog.
