My dog Rudy has been treated here twice. The first time was a consult and surgery for a large soft tissue sarcoma, and the second was for a consult on a malignant melanoma. Both times we saw Dr. Morgan. He spent a lot of time explaining everything to us and making sure all of our questions were answered. He was very good with Rudy, who is by nature an anxious dog. The soft tissue sarcoma surgery was a complete success, with no recurrence of the cancer for 3+ years. We are still deciding how to proceed with the malignant melanoma. I highly recomment CUVS. They are compassionate, professional, and highly skilled veterinary doctors. read more

Warning, long post. Do not take your pet here unless you want them to die. My poor sweet cat, Artemis, died in agony less than 24 hours after a procedure at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists. She was hospitalized multiple times for evaluation of weight loss and GI disease. On June 16, she underwent endoscopy with biopsies and a liver FNA with Dr. Forman. I was told the procedure was uncomplicated and that she was stable and good to go home. This was strike 1, they discharged her too soon. After discharge, she was clearly not okay. On the drive home, I noticed intermittent wheezing. Once home, she became progressively lethargic, hid from us, vomited, had worsening abdominal distension, and appeared to be struggling to breathe. I called the hospital because I was concerned about her respiratory status. I was told these signs could be related to anesthesia and her anti-nausea meds wearing off and that I should monitor her. As a physician, I knew better. I ignored that advice and brought her back to the ER, which I ultimately regret. In the ER, I met Dr. Zenobya Clarke, who was taking "care" of Artemis. She confirmed that she was in respiratory distress and gave her butorphanol (FYI, pet owners cannot observe the treatments, pets are taken to a back room while we are made to wait in a separate room for updates). She disclosed that she accidentally gave "double" the dose, and when I asked her for the exact amount, she said she gave 1 mg/kg of body weight, when the typical dose is 0.2 mg/kg. So she overdosed her by 5 times, not double like she said. When I mentioned that, she acted flippantly like it was no big deal. Strike 2. When I received her medical records after her death, turns out she had actually given 2 mg/kg, so she gave 10 times the amount in an already sick cat. A medication error of that magnitude should never happen. She told me Artemis would be admitted to the ICU and said she looked stable so I could go home. I asked to visit her before I left and noticed that she was open-mouthed breathing and in terrible condition. She was bradycardic and hypotensive on the monitor, none of which was mentioned to me. Strike 3. The vet swore she looked ok just before, which I find hard to believe. I had to point out how unstable she looked. Throughout the visit, Dr. Clarke was callous, brushed off her errors, and seemed like she did not know what she was doing. I found out after the fact that she was a resident with seemingly no oversight. Despite treatment, Artemis' condition rapidly deteriorated. She developed severe respiratory distress, began vomiting blood, and we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize her to end her suffering. She was the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate cat, and to see her die in such a horrific way was devastating. I understand that not every patient can be saved. What I cannot understand is how a patient who was reportedly stable enough for discharge could deteriorate so dramatically within hours, why my concerns about her breathing after discharge were dismissed initially, and how a 10-fold medication overdose occurred during her care. Instead of celebrating my upcoming wedding in a few days, I was forced to say goodbye to the sweetest cat I have ever known. I am left with profound grief, unanswered questions, and a complete loss of trust in a hospital I believed would provide the highest level of care. On top of that, I spent almost $15K at Cornell only for them to ultimately cause her death at their neglect. Artemis trusted me and willingly went into her carrier. Our cocker spaniel developed acute glaucoma and was admitted overnight in an attempt to decrease her eye pressures. The hospital staff were attentive and compassionate during our dog's admission on a weekend. While they were unable to save vision in the affected eye, we are now working to protect vision in her other eye. We have been working with vet ophthalmologist Dr Wynne and staff (Marcasia) who have always gone above and beyond to treat our beloved dog and provide responsive and timely guidance. I am happy to say, we have averted enucleation and are on a strict monitoring regimen for our dogs good eye. We are extremely pleased with our experience and highly, highly recommend CUVS ophthalmology. read more

Complete rip-off! After $1600 just tests and no diagnosis. The vet talked about all possible conditions and scenarios (meanwhile some of them clearly didn't apply. That was a scare tactic!) and suggested even more tests. In the meantime, a cat just had an anal gland abscess. How hard is it to diagnose?! Had to go to a different vet, pay again, who diagnosed the issue immediately. Cornell used to be good but now they just prescribe lots of expensive tests and keep sucking money out of you with no diagnosis or help. read more

When we as humans go to the emergency room we expect to be treated like an ATM. The first question is who is your insurance company and then you are told you have a co-pay. Well one does not expect the same from a veterinary emergency facility. I arrived with my dog as a referral from my primary vet. Okay not expecting that a red carpet would have been put out for me but maybe expressing a little compassion or concern. It was here fill out this form and have a seat. After about 20 minute a technician came out to get my dog with no dialogue it was like a Hawk swooping in on its prey. About 90 minutes passed before a vet comes out to talk to us about my dog. We explained why we were there gave the whole story in great detail and like the wind....gone! Half hour maybe 45 minutes later the vet calls us in to discuss their findings, well no surprise because this is exactly what my primary vet had told me. I'm feeling like what was the reason for me to come here. Off again leaving us in a room wondering what next. Here comes the F&I person the money lady. We are now getting somewhere but where? This made no sense to me. Where is the vet to discuss the diagnosis and the plan for treatment? Ah the return of the vet. We are being informed that in their opinion the course of action is to leave our pet for a couple days for liquid infusion to stabilize her potassium and infuse insulin as well. When asked what happens after the treatment the response was like crickets in the room. Apparently there is no definitive after care except for maybe giving insulin injections twice a day but no idea for how long. I felt pressured to decide what to do. Once again the money lady shows up to discuss the costs involved. They hand you an estimate with a low estimate and a high estimate and then in fine print you are required to make a deposit of 75% of the high estimate! When confronted with this outrage I questioned it. The response was "don't you have pet insurance"? Not everyone has pet insurance. Then it was do you have any credit cards? Care Credit? It was all about the money. I decided this was not what I wanted to deal with and declined any treatment. The looks I got, the vet came back into the room with forms to sign emphasizing leaving "AMA". When I pressed the vet about the prognosis it was at that point it seemed as though no one cared anymore. I would not recommend CUVS read more

Heavyset lady with a gray strip in her hair is pretty rude. I came in there around 3 am My dog was sick. I was on the verge of crying. She tells me that she's gonna take my dog back to look at her and I had her wrapped in a blanket I handed her my puppy she says OK well, I'm gonna only take the dog not the blanket in a very rude tone. People that are coming in there our dealing with a lot of stress and don't need your workers adding more on top of it. If she can't work through the night, maybe she should change her hours. They didn't solve the issue just told me a bunch of things that it could be. I could use Google instead. They give us a huge bill. She was rude the whole process, and my dog came home with a clipped bloody nail which they didn't mention I didn't call back given it 6 am and time for work. Don't come here. read more

This hospital does not care for the animals. All they care about is getting your money. They actually expect you to pay upfront before they do anything they are disgraceful. I will never take my dog there again. The vets have no all they wanna do is hand you a bill that is so large I damn near fainted. Expensive, but worth it. In a pinch, a 24 hour vet emergency room is life or death. Luckily, we are just over bearing pet owners, so our emergencies have been precautionary. However, we have seen specialists here who are experts and easy to work with. We have pet insurance so we are rather liberal with our testing. However, the doctors are conscientious of the price tag and will quote everything up front. At least they know how expensive they are! I have seen some serious cases come through here. It is a real trauma center for serious emergencies and a teaching hospital. Again, I am thankful for a facility like this for those midnight needs. read more

Deeply Traumatic, horrible experience that partially lead to the death of our beloved dog, so much so this is my first online review ever. We brought our dog in for breathing trouble and coughing. A week's stay and massive bill later (which we were barely kept in the loop of while constantly calling to check status) he was discharged with the immediate cause being cleared and a regiment of medication provided. The medication at no point helped him, and we brought him back a week later (which we were charged for as well) and had to put him down for a reason that was ruled out as an immediate threat during his stay. We were denied medications we felt he needed despite the diagnosis and care until we saw a different doctor they recommended. In following up on the situation after his passing, we were blamed in a nearly compasionaless way for the entire ordeal. I would not recommend bringing your pet here to anyone who cares for their beloved animals. Cold, heartless and worst of all incompetent. read more

They really showed kindness and respect to my dog's personality. The vet did an outstanding job explaining the situation and what his thoughts and plans were for our dog. I have reviewed in the past and also looked at lots of reviews here good and bad. I honestly believe that there are times when it can go either way in every business. With social media it's tough one bad experience and people go crazy. Most of the time these are the ones who feel the need to spread which don't get me wrong can be helpful. But lots of good experiences tend to go unappreciated. I am of the mind set to try and give gratitude in life and for my own experience they came thru for me when it seemed dire. I was lucky to have pet insurance for my particular pet DB Cooper when he fell ill last January. Lymphoma my local vet said. They gave me four different oncologists to call and all were pretty booked up. Months till I could get seen. I secured an appointment at one and waited anxiously for the day to arrive. I do dog licensing as part of my job so see lots of pet owners. In talking about my angst as my beloved Copper was getting more enlarged lymph nodes as time was ticking someone asked if I tried Cornell? They weren't on the list. I called immediately after work and took an appointment even further out then the rest because they said send us all records and sometimes if dire they can fit you in. Well the stars aligned and they called me the next day for a appointment the day after that. Here we are six months later and on the 29th he had his final treatment of Chop Protocol and is in remission. For how long only god knows but he has responded extremely well and we have had the most wonderful time together this summer. He is enjoying my new outdoor patio and spending time with his Cocker Spaniel sister Winfred. He is at his healthiest right now and I take it one day at a time but just love my fur pets so there u have it. The staff I have dealt with from Dr Love to all the techs to the checkin staff at the front desk have been stellar towards me. Maybe because I right away thought of themselves as angels not sure but to me they were. Going forward I am looking to start a foundation called DB Cooper Foundation because I have learned a lot and I had the means to get him where he is today but many don't. Some wouldn't have been able to travel an hour and twenty minutes each way. I have a decent car. For whatever reason lymphoma in pets is on huge increase from my research. For now I will start that process slowly and just enjoy each day I have with Coop healthy- u never know perhaps he'll beat the odds and stay in remission and that's my hope. The support staff should go to customer service training and listen to the pet owners who pay for the services of Cornell University Hospital. Horrible experience!!! The Vet was kind, but could only dispense a two day supply of meds because of a CT licensing issue? I've been there before and the wait is often quite long. And, last night (June 8) I couldn't believe the horrible treatment of the support staff. Very frustrating - I couldn't get a word in, and the nurse (or whomever) wasn't listening and I had to repeat the same thing numerous times because she wouldn't stop talking over me. I asked her to please listen several times - very rude and inappropriate behavior, in my opinion, was received. And really no reason for this since Cornell UVS is by no way inexpensive. Called Customer Service today, and left VM for Representative who handles this. One Star. read more

One of the most important thing this place does is tell you when NOT to bring your dog in. They care about you and your pet. I know its a business but its not just about money. I called an hour ago about bring my dog in and they told me I did NOT need to bring them in...even though if I did I would have most likely paid them hundreds if not more. If that type of integrity is not enough they also saved my dogs life a couple years ago when he ate a bottle full of prescriptions meds. They allowed me to stay in the lobby for a few days while he recovered. read more

I'm pretty sure Cornell scammed me out of almost $1000. I wish I could give half a star. I had a one and done terrible experience with Cornell Vet Specialists. My dog had an intense mass removal surgery (at a different, farther away specialist vet) and he busted open his stitches about a week post-op. I immediately called Cornell since they're right down the street from me AND I figured they'd be experts with the Cornell name behind them. Not the case. Three anxious hours later, they returned my dog to me (I could not go in with him), told me they took a test or two on him, and to wait for test results. ....then they asked for $900. So after waiting for over a week (with my dog's stitches still wide open might I add), I finally took him BACK to the original vet over an hour away to get him taken care of because I still hadn't heard anything from Cornell. Not only did the original vet close my dog's stitches up and do the same tests on him, they also charged only half the price. Finally, five days after the original vets cared for my dog, Cornell called me with the results and told me to go see my normal vet. Cornell is both a complete waste of time and a complete waste of money. And while this would be bad enough, they also did not make me feel comforted or at ease about any of this. In fact, I felt worse after I saw them. I am disgusted by the care my dog received and would never, ever bring him back OR recommend that anyone see them. This vet is a disgrace to the Cornell name and should honestly think about removing an Ivy association with their brand. You won't receive that level of care or expertise here. read more

My dog was diagnosed with a potentially fatal gall bladder issue right before Thanksgiving and it was very difficult to find a surgeon who could treat her on short notice -- Stamford Cornell saved her life. They were extremely professional, communicative, responsive and caring. Dr. Morgan was excellent, and the follow-up was very helpful and thorough. Major surgery is not cheap but the level of service warranted it. An excellent experience for us -- and our Bernese mountain dog is thriving. read more

I signed up for Yelp just to leave a negative review because I feel it is my duty to warn other pet owners to avoid this place like the plague. Go anywhere else instead. I only wish I had read the 50 or so other one star reviews *before* I made an appointment. I would have saved myself a trip to Stamford. Like other reviewers, I was tempted by the prestige of Cornell and was willing to shell out a small fortune for a Board-certified soft tissue surgeon. Cornell was my 3rd choice, because AMC was booked through Feb 2022, and Blue Pearl was booked out too. At first I felt lucky that they were available do the surgery sooner than my 1st two choices. That feeling ended the moment I arrived at this McDonald's drive through of a clinic. Firstly, if you're non-white, save yourself the hassle of being racially profiled here. They knew I'm from the Caribbean and they prioritized a white client over me, even though I had an earlier appointment. (The only POC in the entire facility was the security guard.) Next, the estimate for surgery was $5500 - $7,000. That's ok, I knew it would be high 4 figures. However, the "bloodwork" he needed wasn't included in the estimate. If they know that bloodwork is a necessity prior to surgery, why not include it in the estimate to begin with? Why tack it on after? Because they want to quote you one price, then nickel and dime you later to the tune of hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, by saying "this and that costs extra." This left a really bad taste in my mouth. Even worse, after you pay the deposit, if you can't pay the balance that is much higher than you expected based on the estimate, they will confiscate your pet! Like I said, I knew this place would be pricey, but I luckily I was prepared. For context, a "bandage" costs $400 at Cornell. However, I'm not purchasing elective dashboard customization for a car, I'm trying to get a clear, accurate and full picture of the total cost of my dog's care so I can budget it accordingly. Even though I earn 6 figures, I still have a budget. They should have some basic sales skills and say it's $8,000 inclusive of bloodwork, so customers feel like there is a value add and perhaps even a little bit of a relief if the final bill comes in slightly under the estimate. Finances aside, I had a phone consultation with Dr. Morgan, who seemed knowledgeable, personable and erudite. It's a shame that he probably has no idea how incompetent, off putting, and stuck up his glorified gatekeepers are. I told Jackie I thought her tone was disrespectful to me, and she hung up on me. Then she got her supervisor Sophia to cover her. I couldn't schedule the surgery without going through Jackie, and she made sure that no one else would speak to me to schedule it. Two weeks later, after ignoring my messages and emails, they finally had a receptionist reach out to say that I have a $200 balance, and they can't schedule the $7k +++ surgery until I pay it. Kind of tacky and dumb considering 75% of the surgery estimate has to be paid up front. They could have simply added the $200 balance onto the $5250 required surgery deposit, but like I said, they're not that bright or efficient, just tactless and heartless. If they had any intention of scheduling the surgery, they would have. They were just trying to trick me into paying the $200 balance, so they could close my account and cancel the surgery out of spite. They literally dangled the surgery my dogs needs, like a carrot. Sick, petty individuals. By that point I had already found another surgeon, so they can wait a few weeks for me to pay this bill, just like I had to wait two weeks for a reply. Jackie & Sophia clearly do not care about the welfare of animals. They act like snobby sales girls who work on commission, but still act like their customers aren't worthy of buying or wearing the designer clothes their shop is selling. It's always the powerless underlings that lord their ugliness over you, and try to flex their limited authority, while the actual surgeons or people with talent who are kinder and classier probably have no idea why their clients decided to go elsewhere. read more

Two and a half hours for an ultrasound despite being referred by another vet hospital who did not have a sonographer on call. All needed information was provided in advance of visit but when we arrived a brand new case history had to be taken. All that was requested by the vet hospital was an ultrasound. Reason given was that other emergency visits took precedence. We wouldn't be here if it was not an emergency and during that two hour wait they had 3 new cases. No possibility we would ever take any of our pets here again. read more
