Five star music/guitar shop with an amazing selection whether acoustic or electric guitars, new or used gear. We've bought 4 acoustic guitars (2 Breedloves, a mahogany travel Guild, & a Gibson Deluxe Studio Songwriter) and a used hammered dulcimer, as well as odds and ends, and everyone there is always amazing, helpful and responsive. When we bought the dulcimer the owner wasn't there and the sales guy didn't know if the stand came with it - we bought it anyway and the next day the owner called and said they'd ship the stand to me and apologized for the confusion! Staff is polite and friendly; pricing is not competitive. I don't mind paying a little extra for their overhead but I find their markup unaffordable. Called last year regarding music lessons for a family member and no one got back to me. Called this year regarding lessons and...no one got back to me, again! When I called and spoke to a manager, I was told basically that they have communication issues. I called a month later about getting an amp looked at which I needed for gigging and was told that it could take a month to look at and fix. I appreciated the honesty and took my repair business elsewhere. As much as I like supporting local music shops, I feel they make it hard to do so. read more

A great all around music store. There are various "types" of music stores in the area, running the gamut from small ones in the mall carrying mostly low end stuff to the Walmart-like store in Colonie that had a large inventory but usually unhelpful staff (and not great prices, unless you catch them during a sale). And then there is Parkway. I used to live around the corner from them, and then they moved to a nicer location and I went there less. Don't know why. This place rocks. The staff are great, it has a cozy feel to it, and it isn't loud. They carry guitars besides Strat/Les Paul originals and copies... specifically, they carry Rickenbacker guitars (my personal obsession) which in and of itself is a great reason to come. Rickenbacker is very particular with whom it offers a license too. They also have acoustic guitars, amps, and drums upstairs. I am really wanting an electric drum kit and I spent a lovely evening upstairs talking with their staff even though I made it clear I wasn't buying that day. They weren't pushy, just helpful. I suppose the only fault I can think of is that their hours aren't great. Weekdays they close at 7, Saturdays they close at 6, and Sundays they close at 5. Usually, I only find myself with free time during the evening, and I have driven here several times only to pull in the parking lot and discover that they were closed. My fault, but still grrrr! read more

The guitar inventory (quality inventory...) is really impressive here. They have the Les Pauls, Strats, Telecasters. Vintage stuff as well including some oddball ones like the Flying V and Explorers. A very large acoustic section as well (I bought a mandolin here last year). This isn't the House of Guitars (Rochester) but it's a great asset to the Albany area to have a place like this. BE AWARE!!!! BE AWARE!!!! BE AWARE!!!! I took a keyboard that I bought from Parkway Music for repair on 8/28/20. I received no communication from Parkway Music ever in regards to the "repair" unless I called them. Often, getting answers like "the repair man is busy" or "eating lunch" and we will call you back (that never happened). Now, three months later, Parkway Music charges me about $65 for opening the keyboard up. No diagnostics done or information what the problem is. In addition, last time we spoke to the repair guy, he said he does not change parts (e.g., repair). Now I have to to take this somewhere else and pay the $70 or more again for another person to open this up. So, what exactly did I pay for??? DO NOT TAKE AN INSTRUMENT FOR REPAIR if you have NO INTENSION to REPAIR the instrument!!!!!! read more

This is my Favorite music store of all time... they have a great selection and always easy to talk to and get help from... I had a 94 Gibson Les Paul Special that I ruined by taking out the P-90 pickups and put in P-100's lost all my sound... I took it to parkway and the staff asked what I wanted the guitar to sound like... I told them a hard rock... they tried several different pickups until they found the perfect one for what I was looking for... now this is my favorite guitar out of several all thanks to Parkway! read more

over the last two months I bought two (more) guitars from Parkway. (This is in addition to four other guitars and two amps I've bought there over the years.) although some people might be comfortable buying an instrument online, I wouldn't buy a guitar I haven't touched and played. Parkway makes it easy to test drive instruments in individual rooms. I never felt rushed or pressured, and staff was always available to answer questions. their prices are fair and reasonable, and compare favorably with (or are identical to) online "stores" like Sweetwater. I've always found their trade-in policy and pricing to be fair. They never play "hide the ball" or bait and switch. The decision makers are on site so trade-in credit is offered on the spot. I traded in a new-ish Les Paul and received what I though was a fair credit toward the purchase of a new instrument; on the last guitar I purchased I traded in an effects pedal (box) and again received a fair credit. they are my go-to music store. I also take my instruments in for repair and re-stringing. a satisfied customer. a throwback store (in the positive sense) where you are treated decently and respectfully. read more

I'm not exactly a big Parkway fan. The owner is great, but some of the people who he has working for him are real shitbirds who don't listen to what you're telling them. They want to sell you what they insist you need, instead of what you actually want. On top of that, I had the most joyous pleasure of dealing with a particular employee who had a real attitude problem and talked down to customers as though his time was being wasted by having to actually do his job. I'm sorry to make you get off your ass and earn your pay, but prithee, o' glorious minstrel, humbly I ask of you to answer but a few of my petty questions regarding this fine instrument that I am considering purchasing. (Despite his insanely inflated perception of himself, he's _not_ the greatest thing to ever happen to the music industry, no matter how much he apparently thinks he is.) That said, their prices are good, but not unbeatable. They do have quite an inventory as well. In fairness, I have to also give them credit for carrying Ernie Ball Music Man guitars. These are really nice guitars and Parkway is one of only two music shops in the area (the other being Guitar Center in Colonie) that are Ernie Ball dealers. It's also important for me to point out that this review is based on my past experiences with Parkway, but that I have not dealt with them since they moved into their new location. It is possible that they've changed, but based on my past experiences I'm not particularly interested in going back to find out. The bottom line is that I don't have time for cocky guitar pushers. It gets on my nerves worse than dealing with obnoxious car salesmen. There isn't a shortage of music store options in this area. Parkway has been around for quite a while and it has a strong following of people who swear by them, but given my experiences with them, it's a store that I'm personally really not interested in doing business with. As a budding musician, I need to feel supported. I need to be encouraged. I may need a little more assurance than the next person. I need somebody to tell me that I'm on the right track and reinforce my creativity. I need a space that encourages me to explore, experiment, and feel things out for myself. In my experience, this is far from the norm when it comes to spending time in music shops. Thankfully, this is not the case at Parkway Music. Despite the madness of the holiday season, I never felt overwhelmed as I spent a couple of hours browsing the offerings of Parkway in late December. The store is orderly and thoughtfully laid out, making for a truly pleasant experience. The staff at Parkway are available, but not intrusive. They are knowledgeable, but not arrogant in their presentation of that knowledge. As far as selection goes, Parkway has the highest quality of its local competitors. In addition to new and recently used instruments, Parkway also carries an impressive selection of vintage guitars and basses. Another area that Parkway scores high marks in is the individual rooms provided for patrons to try out different gear. I've always been uncomfortable with having to play in the actual showrooms of different shops, so this offers a guy like me a great opportunity to truly get to know the instrument I'm considering buying. It was as simple as grabbing a guitar from the rack, finding an open room, and playing. All of the rooms had plenty of gear, with modern amplifiers and cords that work. As a tip, don't hesitate to ask about trying out a few effects pedals. Parkway has an awesome selection of new and used pedals to enjoy. If you are a local musician or somebody that's thinking about becoming one, put Parkway Music on your radar. While the price point is a bit high, it's not significant enough to buy elsewhere. This is the go-to place in the Capital District. read more

Great store! Outstanding guitar selection --truly something for everyone!! My niece is an aspiring young guitarist and I've taken her here a few times for electric and acoustic gear. What I really like about Parkway Music is the staff, who take the time to explain things, don't try to sell you something you don't need/want but DO point you in right direction based upon your skill level, performing needs, and budget. We also have a blast in the try-out rooms, where you can rock out and not get rushed out. I assume he works for Guitar Center (worst music store ever). The owners of Parkway Music are two of most knowledgeable guitar fanatics you will ever meet. They have a true passion for guitars. The rest of the staff is equally great. I've bought countless guitars, basses, drums and amps from Parkway and I look forward to buying plenty more in the future. Parkway music is simply the best music store in the upstate area! I started playing the guitar at 40 years old and I always felt very self-conscious about walking into a music store. Tom, Adam and all the guys at parkway have always been very supportive and always made me feel very welcome. It's now been almost 10 years since I've been playing the guitar and I have bought 6 guitars and a TON of other gear from Parkway. I ended up building and ordering a custom build Taylor acoustic through Parkway. Tom was very helpful when working with me on designing my custom Taylor. My wife and I have attended several Taylor road show events hosted by Parkway and have always had a fantastic time. I'm always impressed when I walk into Parkway and I am greeted by name more often than not. All of the staff at Parkway go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and never rush you when you are trying different gear. Their prices are very competitive (even with a lot of on-line places where you can buy gear), and whenever I can I make sure to make my purchases at Parkway to support this business! Absolutely the best shop in the area by a wide margin. I once saw Joe Bonamassa shopping here and you know he's like the biggest gear snob of all time, so this place is a real gem. Over the years they have given me very fair deals on everything I've bought, traded and consigned. The last time I checked with them, my tab was like $15k and growing so I am not just a casual customer when I give this review. I mean it; you're a dope if you go anywhere else in the area to get gear. I've been there, done that. The staff are all talented musicians, long term employees and trust me when I say they know a lot more than you do...yet they're totally approachable and willing to educate you so you can make an informed decision. Their amp tech is absolutely legendary and their luthiers have done all sorts of quality repairs on guitars for me over the years. My only suggestion is that they get more vintage gear in there on a regular basis but they know what people are buying and that's what drives their business. Also, I guess their vintage stuff goes online and sells almost immediately so it probably doesn't sit for long. read more

Earlier today, I walked into Parkway and had such an incredible experience there! Matt, the owner, is hands on and is seriously a super nice guy. What a pleasure and everyone I talked to there was just as great. Someone complained on Yelp about people having attitudes but my experience couldn't have been anymore opposite. It was a huge pleasure going into their shop and walked away having dropped off a black Gibson Les Paul to have Duncan Invaders installed and picked up a new (used) stunningly gorgeous maple flame-top Les Paul. If you haven't gone to Parkway, you're missing out. I will NEVER go into Guitar Center ever again. There's just no point! In the short time I spent there, I quickly realized that they genuinely care about their customers. Not just from how they treated me but also seeing their staff interact with other customers who walked in. It's a great shop and I'm glad I bumped into them!
