My 107 year old mortise lock (manufactured date) broke after 105 years of extraordinary service. I found Pasadena Lock Shop at 10:53AM and read the reviews on Yelp. I asked for an estimate and Steve C. Replied immediately. He said they were closing early and could not make a service call but if I could bring it by within the hour he could get it done. I took the mortise lock off (THANKS, YOUTUBE!!!) and arrived at 12:57. I was greeted by Jesus who was impressed that I was able to remove the lock and my how to replace it roadmap that included the parts taped on paper in order of removal with a description of where they belonged. Needed to get my house doors rekeyed and called a few different yelp recommendations. PASADENA LOCK SHOP responded quickly to my inquiry and asked me to provide a few pictures of my doors & locks. One of the best things in Pasadena are the long standing businesses that have been around a long time, 1931. I went to get my home keys duplicated (old lock) because they still do the old school of cutting the keys manually. Unfortunately they duplicates did not work that well. The office was easy to reach and seemed helpful enough. They explained the problem and gave us a quote after we called and sent photos, videos of the lock via email. We were told to expect their locksmith, Richard, at 2pm. Richard arrived over 30 minutes early, greeting us at the door with complaints about the area, out-of-touch young people who know nothing such as ourselves, and seemingly no idea how to fix the lock. We tried explaining the conversation with the office but he became openly hostile. After several attempts to calm him down, including a threat to "teach us a lesson" while getting in our faces, we asked him to leave the house. He was more than happy to - insisting there was nothing he could do for a lock he described with colorful language and people he didn't even like. Even suggesting we call his boss after trying to avoid confirming his name. He claims he called upon arrival, but even in his voicemail is ranting to himself about the trip being a waste of time and wishing we'd "finally show ourselves" because he doesn't know where he's going. It's hard to imagine this was ever going to go well. We immediately followed up with the office and they were apologetic. Apparently he's a newer hire with no track record - but something's off here. We would not recommend locksmith services from a provider who sends new employees to customers homes without vetting. This aggressive behavior would be clear from a mile away. read more

I had a great experience working with Steve of Pasadena Lock Shop and would highly recommend him. He's knowledgeable, personable, and responsive. The original mortise lock on my 98-year-old home was acting up. Because of the extremely short throw on my mortise lock, he recommended I add a separate deadbolt for added security. He installed a Medeco deadbolt and removed the mortise lock to take back to his shop for repairs. His employee then returned later the same day to install the repaired mortise lock. What a gem! They fixed a busted doorknob mechanism that might maybe be original to my 1920s building, and they re-keyed a lock that was not quite as old but still pretty vintage. This locksmith is the closest business to us and after reading the reviews they were our first choice to rekey our locks after my house key was stolen with my purse along with my driver's license, with my address. They responded to me quickly, including the business owner, Steve, who was about to get on a cruise, and took the time to respond to my request for a quote, before he lost signal. He had someone in the office schedule an appointment for Monday, as I didn't realize at first they were closed weekends and Elizabeth discussed rates with us when coordinating a time. (Steve says he usually handles the after hours calls). We decided to wait until then, even though other businesses could come sooner, due to their excellent reputation and the positive interactions I had with everyone I was discussing the job with, and I'm glad we did. Nick communicated with me by text to see if I would be open to him stopping by early, which was great for me, and he did the job quickly and at a fair and reasonable rate, as quoted. He even didn't charge for the duplicate keys for us, a nice surprise. All communications were respectful, professional, and knowledgeable. Easy and simple, which was a relief. I felt very comfortable having Nick come to my home to perform work and his manner of responding to my questions instilled confidence. The rekeying work is done in his van, and he returns in a couple minutes, checks that the locks worked, and explained the process clearly. I specifically asked if they simply can rekey the lock and maintain the existing lock housing, which the landlord requested we do. That was not a problem, and they performed work as described. We're so happy to support our local shop, just down the street from us, and avoid extra expense of gas of having another business perform the work at a farther distance. (Especially with prices being so high of late!) Move into my place within a year and the backdoor lock was always very difficult to turn open with my key. This only got worse after all the rain we had recently - to a point where I couldn't even open my door from the outside. Management sent someone from Pasadena Lock shop, really nice guy, but I didn't catch his name - he fixed everything very quickly and even made new keys for me since the original was worn out. He found suitable antique replacements for what couldn't be fixed, and also repaired an antique door lock that I had been told was unrepairable, as well as upgrading the cylinder. This required a trip back to his shop to machine some of the parts. He was delightful and has an appreciation for old homes and original, unique hardware. Wow, I am incredibly amazed with Pasadena Lock Shop. Steve and Nick it was my pleasure to have worked with you two. Steve showed up to the building and was able to help me in a matter of 20 minutes or so. I had 5% battery juice on my phone and within five minutes Nick coordinated for Steve to help me unlock my clients home. I am a Realtor and I was holding an open house unfortunately all my belongings and the keys to the apartment stayed inside the apartment, I called the HOA of the building for any guidance for liability issues and of course they were no help... it's unfortunate when a business that provides customer service in any means especially property management FAILED to assist AGAIN liability issues -- property management would much rather have their tenants SPEND TIME AND MONEY on other services yet ask a highly monthly HOA with no sources of help or guidance this saddens me for anyone who lives in the building. Steve showed up the building within minutes and was able to show me how to properly lock and unlock with another bolt involved. I am not an expert in locks but Steve educated me.
