Pasillo de Humo just wasn't my favorite. The fish I ordered was a bit undercooked, and the Oaxacan mole didn't taste like what I was expecting--though that might just be personal preference. I've had mole in other places that felt richer and more balanced, so this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. That said, I really appreciate that they were open early in the evening when it seemed like everywhere else was closed. Guess we didn't realize certain days closed early, so I was grateful to have a place to eat. Don't think I would go out of my way to come back, but can see the appeal if they're looking for a spot open a bit earlier read more

We went for dinner and my initial reaction was that the venue was a little difficult to locate. It was in a food court of sorts - but tucked away located upstairs. From the minute we walked in, I noticed that the ventilation was not great from the kitchen. It was very smoky and felt as if we were smack bang in the middle of the kitchen. On to the food -- I was excited to find a restaurant serving traditional Oaxacan food, and it could have been what I ordered, but I was highly highly underwhelmed. There is clearly a lot of attention put on the authenticity of the food, its preparation and the serving... But for me I didn't like what I ordered. We may have gone on an off day, the ice cream that my friend ordered she said tasted as if it had melted and been refrozen as it had lots of icesicles. read more

This is a great place to try Oaxacan cuisine in Mexico City. We went on a Sunday afternoon and didn't require a reservation. The place was quite empty. We started with drinks; my husband had mezcal and I had tierra maya, a rum, coffee-based drink. It came in a bowl, and drinking out of a bowl was fun. We tried the appetizer salad with grasshoppers and shared the octopus dish for entree. Located on the 2nd floor in the middle of several other restaurants. Most of the restaurant was tourists. Duck mole-tender, a little gamey, but the mole was very mediocre. The tlayuda de chorizo y chapulines was filled with grasshoppers - a delicacy of Oaxaca. Great if you're adventurous but it didn't have much flavor. Overall, good presentation but would not return. Some of the best desserts I've ever had was at Pasillo de Humo -- this beautiful Oaxacan restaurant in Mexico City. Our best friend, Dany, took us here for breakfast during our last day on our trip to Barra Mexico. Not only did we have an unbelievable feast that preluded these picture perfect desserts, but we had not one -- not two -- but three different servings of deliciousness! Tamal De Chocolate De Matate -- Stone ground chocolate tamal with "rosita de cacao" flower sauce and seasonal red berries Pannacotta De Pixtle -- Pannacotta made with mamey fruit seed, ice cream trio: rosita de cacao flower, Mexican rice pudding, burnt milk with Mexican raw brown sugar And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the last dish of the trio was Mexican rice pudding with a scoop of house-made ice cream on top decorated with coconut shavings, almonds, and edible flowers (2nd photo) -- Absolutely loved the rice pudding -- this was my favorite dessert out of the bunch Stunning and delicious. Now don't get confused and go to the joint downstairs (although I wish we would've) this spot is upstairs! Walking in, it's huge & pretty much empty? Large menu with what could be described as *Gourmet Tacos* they said. We tried three different varieties including the tripe and none were good. Served luke warm and just too much going on, too many ingredients & too much filling... the tacos are huge! On a better note, the salsas are great. Pasillo de Humo was one of my favorite restaurants in Mexico City. For appetizers, we shared grasshopper tacos (grasshoppers themselves were reminiscent of small salted sardines) that came with freshly-made tortillas and side dishes, and pumpkin fritters. I had the duck mole, and it was very possibly one of the best moles I've ever eaten. I've been here twice and the food is overall very good. Traditional Oaxacan cuisine. The cocktails aren't the greatest, but the service is. On my most recent visit I got the beef shank, which was very fatty and tough as nails. I'm okay with fatty but shank should never be as hard to cut and chew as this one was. At least they took it off the bill and let me replace it with the snapper, which was light and delicious. The homemade ice creams and sherberts are worth it. Try the vanilla with Chile and Oaxacan chocolate for ice cream and the mezcal pineapple for sherbert. read more

The two things we tried (a quesadilla type thing and a chocolate tamal) were both good. I enjoyed the quesadilla-like dish the most. Everything was presented beautifully. The place is super cute and the service was pretty nice though most people did not speak English. It was my first meal in Mexico and tbh the food itself was a bit underwhelming. I thought all the dishes could have come out a bit warmer. We ordered this soft bread, cheese/tomato dish, and all of the small taco breakfast items. I think they were called something else, but were essentially tacos I was unable to eat the crickets bc it was too overwhelming. The other dishes were good but nothing really stood out for me. I tried the coffee that had cinnamon and brown sugar. It was way too sweet for my taste, but very pleasant to have a sip of, especially in the nice little mug. Loved the aesthetic, vibe and cleanliness of the spot but didn't feel that authentic and the food was just aiiite. 4.5 stars! Pasillo de Humo is a casual, bright, airy Oaxacan restaurant in Condesa, located on the second floor of a food hall/market. It came highly recommended by multiple sources, so it was a must-try on my visit to Mexico City. Coming in for breakfast, we were seated right away at one of the many tables and we started off with a bowl of hot chocolate with milk, which was leeched with a variety of spices, but was a bit sweet for my tastes. We were also offered a selection of sweet pastries, and the chocolate croissant was one of the most buttery, flakey, tender pastries I've ever tried! Their breakfast menu is full of Oaxacan specialties, and we decided to order a variety to share. The huevos a la oaxaquena was a rich casserole with tomato salsa, eggs, cheese, and a chorizo sausage, which was quite heavy and not particularly unique in flavor. The omelette milpero was a beautifully cooked and plated omelette stuffed with greens and topped off with salsa, corn, watercress, and pickled onions. The tortilla de papa y quelites was a tasty frittata with potatoes, also topped off with watercress, cherry tomatoes, and pickled onions. But my favorite dish by far was the Oaxacan enchiladas, which came with three tortillas drowned in a red Oaxacan mole and served with tender, shredded chicken with oregano on the side. The main star here was definitely the mole, which was the best I've ever had--it was dark, chocolatey, and had just the right amount of spice and savory flavors. This sauce is undoubtedly the thing to come for! Overall, this was a fantastic restaurant with beautifully plated, creative, chef-driven takes on Oaxacan dishes. This place was recommended by a coworker . I didn't know what I'd got myself into until I looked at the menu. We ordered the mole negro with duck, the tlayuda with crickets , and the flan. They have a lot of option for Alcohol but limited non-alcoholic drink . I ordered the orange juice and it was very tasty! The service was ok, probably because there was a language barrier. Went here with some friends to grab a bite to eat for dinner on a Saturday night. It was a bit later, so our group of 7 was able to be seated right away. For the meal, we decided to split a few dishes--some of the items I had were the insect tamale, the cricket pizza, the duck mole, the tongue mole and a few drinks. Everything was very rich and tasty--I quite liked all of the bug dishes actually and the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a place worth checking out if you are looking for some delicious Oaxacan food. read more

I just had the best meal of my life. Joyful, adventurous food. Fantastic staff--not overbearing but attentive and charming. The cocktails were fine but the mezcal selection brought it home. The chocolate tamal tasted as good as the first time I had truffles. The helados could be creamier, and the pork mole was not as amazing as the duck. But even then, both dishes had elements to excite: fresh broad beans and snow peas in the pork mole; vanilla chili ice cream. Just so good. read more

I then had the tequila sour which was still not strong but had a nice smoky flavour We shared the croquet and the quesadillas and then had a dessert each. More than enough food (but we are not big eaters) The desserts made the meal. The chocolate tamal initially had a mainly chocolate taste but then you could taste the corn in the second instance. Our tour guide from La Merced recommended Pasillo de Humo. Cute restaurant on second floor of a little food plaza. Lots of bright light to make the space look really open. I recommend ordering anything with their mole sauces. I got the enchiladas fiesta oaxaquena. Chicken that came with the dish was okay, but the mole was very tasty! The huevos a la oaxaquena is delicious! Spicy, flavorful, sausage, eggs. We kept dipping the tortillas in the sauce. Pastry items they offer at the beginning are very good too. This was my least favorite restaurant on an 8 day trip to CDMX. The chicken mole main was not worth eating. The appetizer I had was a chile relleno taquito with a nice bean dip and that was great and the room was nice. There were only tourists though. It was my 2nd most expenisve meal, which still wasn't super expensive if the food was good, but it was just dissapointing. I don't drink, and got an aqua fresca that was horrible. It might have been bitters poured in water. If you're stuck here with friends, it does seem to be more a drinking place and the appetizers might all be good. read more

We have been reading reviews about Pasillo de Humo and it's one of the two Oxacan places (the other being Yuban) that we were looking forward to on our CDMX trip. Unfortunately it turned out to be extremely disappointing. We ordered duck in black mole sauce (pato en mole negro), sweetbreads in chichilo mole (molleja en chichilo), and a vegetarian huazontles croquette in yellow mole. The huazontles turned out to be the best with more subtleness despite of a mellow taste. The chichilo was under-seasoned and did a poor job of covering the gaminess of sweetbreads. Mole negro was decent but the duck was overcooked. The restaurant pushes very strongly for you to buy their alcohol drinks and if you don't, they do all sorts of antics to ruin your experience. They came to ask us three times whether we wanted mezcals and when we said no, the server actually tried to mock us. They then decided that guests who do not order mezcals only get dried-out yellow tortillas despite of everyone else being served the fresh blue ones. Lastly, the server rushed us to finish the meal and cleared the table while we were still eating and managed to spill debris all over us, all without a single apology. I really really wanted to like Pasillo de Humo given the glowing reviews of Chef Alam. The restaurant is filled of entirely foreigners. Unfortunately, it fell far short. read more

This restaurant specializes in Oaxacan cuisine. The food is good, yes, but bear in mind that because of the location, you're going to pay more for the ambiance and overall vibes of the Roma/Condesa neighborhood. To me, I think you can find equally nicer restaurants in the historic center or even Coyoacán for a lesser price, but still an equally nice, but different ambiance. Furthermore, the food took forever to come out. It took over 30 minutes for us to be even acknowledged by a server, and we waited over 45 minutes for our food to come out completely. My friend ordered a tlayuda which came out relatively quickly, but I ordered the molcajete fish which felt like an eternity to come out. Drinks were fine, a little bit on the pricier side for CDMX but still good. The restaurant is also loud and we were sat right by the grill, making us smell a little too much like a pasillo de humo. Regardless, if you want Oaxacan food in a trendy neighborhood with a bustling energy, by all means try this place. I don't think I would come back honestly just because of the wait. read more

The service was great. The waiters and staff are extremely courteous. My only disappointment was the appetizer I choose. It had a very hard tortilla like substance filled with mushrooms which were very unseasoned. They don't have salt on the table by the way. The entree of the duck was delicious. The duck itself extremely tender, worked well with the sweet mole. If you are not a fan of SWEET mole do not get this dish. Presentation gets a 10/10. read more

This place, which we visited for breakfast, certainly had potential. First of all, it smelled absolutely amazing. We were seated next to the massive stone-looking grill, which consistently wafted smoky earthiness into our noses, only to get stronger and more wonderful as more customers showed up. Then, my hot chocolate (water, not milk) turned out to be a multifaceted, layered and swirling gem (when I looked into it I swear I could see the layers shifting atop one another), and the best one I'd ever tasted. But the food? Close to offensively bland. My chilaquiles had some options for ordering - I specifically said I didn't want eggs, but asked the waiter for his recommendation between guajillo sauce, green mole, and yellow mole. He said guajillo, so I went with that - but it ended up tasting like bland marinara. And he put eggs on it. So: soggy tortilla chips with marinara and eggs - luckily with some delicious sprouts floating in the corner at least. My dad's grasshopper 'omelette' showed no signs of grasshoppers beyond one tiny centimeter-long leg. I even called the waiter over to ask if they had forgotten the grasshoppers. He assured me they were in there. I don't think so. Either way, his eggs floated in a sauce marginally better than mine, but only by virtue of being slightly different. I did not even half finish my dish. Just nursed the wonderful chocolate and watched other orders go sailing by that smelled and looked much better than what we had gotten. read more

We are beyond disappointed with our dinner here for numerous reasons. Right when we got there some guy pushed a mezcal cart to us and pressured us to order something before we even looked at the drink menu. Huge turn off right off the bat. Also, what's with insects on like half of the menu? Doesn't leave many options... we ordered based on the server's recommendations and got order de chapulines (grasshoppers, guac, cheese, tacos) and pato en mole negro de chilhuacle (duck with mole). They also give you a red and green salsa with chips on the house. Everything left something to be desired... both salsas were spicy. I don't mind spice but do they both need to be the same? The duck tasted more like chicken to be quite honest and the sides we came with were not impressive. Finally, there was not enough guac with the grasshoppers. I was extremely disappointed that I put in an open table reservation and let them know we were celebrating a birthday and they didn't even acknowledge it. It was awful! What was the worst part of the night was leaving and finding out we stink of cigarette smoke. It is all over my hair. What a huge disappointing night. All I can say is that I tried grasshoppers for the first time and that's it. read more

It's pricey, but delicious. My wife and I enjoyed a many-appetizers-as-dinner dinner here last week. The dining room is a bit hard to find, on the second floor of the mini-food court. It's a spacious eating space, a ton of tables, open kitchen, a bar area. The patrons were largely English-speaking. Our favorite dish was probably the escamole tacos. It's a little hard to find, but there's a maitre d' of sorts out front of the building who will happily direct you. The place smells absolutely amazing as you walk in. Smoky and spicy aromas from the open grill area, and from the line up above. The selection of menu items is extensive, and there was also a sizable list of daily specials. I am not hugely familiar with Oaxacan fare, so I won't speak to perceived authenticity. All I can say is that everything ordered by my party of three was fresh and delicious, from the tortillas and salsa all the way through the flan. A huge array of flavors and more than a few ingredients with which I was totally unfamiliar. The selection of mezcals was also quite extensive, with a good balance between the jovens which I prefer and aged examples. The people who work there are extremely attentive and helpful. Nobody we interacted with spoke much English (and I wouldn't expect them to), but with my pidgin Spanish we were able to get through just fine. We got there at 730 on a Monday and only a few tables were full, but by 9 the joint was jumpin. It's probably worth making a reservation on Open Table just to be sure. read more

Stumbled upon Pasillo de Humo by pure chance when my brunch spot of choice a couple of blocks away was experiencing high volumes of customers. Dined at this marvelous restaurant by fate. Upon sitting, we felt welcomed and at home. The staff was a bit busy, but tried their best to give quality service and meet our every need.
