We came during business hours but when we arrived there was a hand printed sign saying they were closed for the day. No explanation but it said to keep cool. So much for learning more about Paso Robles during our stopover. We did walk around the outside and it was just a brick building in the middle of a large park. When visiting Paso Robles, stop here to learn a bit of the town's history! We were greeted by friendly docents, who welcomed our sweet pit bull too. We chipped in the suggested $5 each to keep the Library running. I can't believe they don't receive city, state or federal funding!! Not only was Andrew Carnegie one of the richest men in American history, but he put his money where his mouth is and gave back to communities and ensured regular folk get access to books by creating libraries. This beautiful Baroque style building was one of them. Our docent showed us the current exhibit, which highlights the history of wine, particularly Amphoras, or ancient, ingenious wine vessels. Then, she explained what historically put El Paso de Robles on the map were the hot springs people liked to stop at while trekking between SF and LA as well as the luxurious Paso Robles Inn that early Hollywood stars enjoyed staying at until it burned down. After a nice overview, our docent let us look at the other displays on our own such as Paso Robles High School memorabilia and an interesting section dedicated to the timeline and contributions of Black residents in this town. Although it is two stories, the bottom level is stored with family records people can access upon request. The main level is quite small, so you can see everything in about 30 minutes. Historical info is very well put together in this beautiful building. I didn't have enough time to soak it all in since we had other obligations to care for, so I will be going back to finish my slow walk & read of other half. My mother loved it too! Lots of interesting information & I am a sucker when it comes to vintage historical displays ... peering into the eyes & expressions of the people in photos. Stop in for a visit! It's in the town square. The friendly and knowledgeable docents make this a memorable place to visit. I love that some of the original library shelving is still in place and is being used to display artifacts and high school year books, etc. Loved the RJ Arnold photography exhibit with its explanation of the restoration needed to make new prints from the sometimes corroded metal negstives. The gift shop is the best ever! Its chock full of ew books mixed with vintage items that must be donated by the community because the prices are so reasonable. How refreshing to find something other than the typical pricey museum gift shop fare. I love that the milk glass dive ornament I bought probably graced the tree of a local resident before I brought it home. read more

First - Thank You Mr. Carnegie for the Library Building. It was in the past the primary library for Paso Robles, however the hew facility, (it is across from the park in Spring Street) is much much larger. Now lets get back on track. the Historical Society for Paso Robles is simply wonderful. Display of the history of Paso Robles are so well done, and the treasure of books about the history and more and more. If you are a local to the area there is so much to digest, it can be overwhelming. If you are from out of the area it is a nice stop to get a fell for how Paso Robles was. Either way it is an enjoyable stop. also - The book / gift store is small and packed with good history books and simple remembrances of the past. Some good gifts here that you won't find in other places. read more

This was an interesting library. I love how they displayed the life of Paso Robles. I love the antiques and how everything was organized in glass cabinets for showing. Thank you for having this and learning about the city we visit and live in! read more
