There are plenty of artifacts here to see and read about. Admission is $15 and more is always appreciated. Relying on donations and volunteers. Oh did I mention there is the Woodland car show here too, today a group of Corvettes stopped to show and tell. Cool Stuff. I sat outside and remembered several of the planes here as the plastic models..ha, I assembled and blew up. Check for special showings and other related events. I wasn't expecting much from an air museum outside a small town in the middle of California, but this place impressed me! It's just not planes. There are multiple buildings with all sorts of historical displays, including military vehicles, classic cars and race cars. There is also sort of a library area. I looked through old racing programs and car manuals, but was so much more. If you're really into that, you could spend the whole day going through all of the historical books and programs. What I thought would only be about an hour's time turned into over three. Super friendly volunteer staff willing to share their knowledge and experiences too! read more

While watching my teenage grandchildren over Easter break so decided to pry them from their phones and social media and take them to one of my favorite places in Paso Robles - the Estrella Warbird Museum. They absolutely loved the wonderful displays of historical wartime history, the planes, tanks and other memorabilia but especially the beautifully restored autos from the past. They could not stop talking about their visit after we left. This is truly a hidden gem when visiting Paso - a must-see. And they never once took out their phones during the visit except to take photos of the exhibits. read more

Estrella Warbirds Museum / Woodland Auto Display is a fabulous museum, and well worthy of attention by both aviation enthusiasts, car buffs and racing fans. It is not particularly well signed, but the museum is located off HWY 46, a few miles east of Paso Robles. HWY signage needs signficant improvement, as I've driven by dozens of times without noticing it. The inventory of aircraft is very good, and the auto and racing inventory is fabulous. All aircraft and military vehicles are on outside display, while all collectible and racing vehicles are displayed indoors. One building is dedicated to the vehicles of Red Ball Express, the supply line from the invasion beaches at Normandie in WW2. There are display cases of aircraft models and military uniforms. The docents are very congenial, and Big Band and Fifties music is played in the car viewing areas. There is a nominal admission fee, called a donation. read more

My father was a WWII single engine pilot. He flew P-51 Mustangs and Corsairs off carriers. My husband's dad was stationed in Pearl Harbor during the attack. The aviation museum is really really cool. So much to see! Many artifacts for all the wars! Outside they have full size antique airplanes. A great source of living history! read more

What a gem!! War artifacts, planes and cars all included in the price. Well maintained. We are so happy we decided to check after finding a flyer at a hotel. They could definitely charge more for all you get to see. The war artifacts ranging from WWI, WWII, golf war were super interesting, the planes are super impressive to see in person and the car although mostly race cars but there was some interesting classics. If you're passing by the San Miguel area definitely take some time to stop by Estrella Warbird Museum. This place is hugeee and they have so many different things to see and look at. The kids loved getting to walk around and see the trucks, tanks, and airplanes. They also got to do a little scavenger hunt while walking through the Museum. Our favorite was probably the automobile collection, it is extensive, they have sooo many cars from every time period. All in all an amazing experience! read more

Estrella Warbirds Museum is a delightful and informative way to spend a few hours in the Paso Robles area. The outdoor space is dedicated to military aircraft with war vehicles presented among them. Nothing is roped off, so I suppose guests can climb and get a closer look. The space is very accommodating for a comfortable stroll as well as tables and benches for seating and a picnic. The indoor portions are fascinating. In one large room here are displays of uniforms, electronic gear, war-time memorabilia, photographs, and scale models. Both World Wars are represented. A large indoor portion of the museum is dedicated to cars, specifically, the Woodland Auto Display, an amazing collection of beautifully restored classic cars , hot rods and race cars. There are a lot of memories with those cars and the background music helped in that regard. The books available in the gift shop are well-chosen, some for adults and some for children. You will need to use your GPS to find the place. It is not well-advertised along the main Paso Robles highway and streets. read more

We were told that if we kept the stickers we were given, we could come back the next day for free. Don't know if that applies to everyone or if the lady was just being friendly though. Either way, the people there are really wonderful, passionate, and friendly. Besides the museum, its history, and the history of the different vehicles and collections, they'll also tell you all about local going-on and locations. We actually learned about the Paso Robles' holiday parade happening later in the evening from talking with the folks there. Good thing too, because that ended up being very relevant to our dinner reservations while also letting us get back to town early so we could watch. A local museum that's great to visit even if military history and car collections aren't your cup of tea. They have a seriously cool collection of everything, not just vehicles and planes, but also artifacts from both World Wars I and II. We spent two hours here and could have spent even more, there were so many sections to it. There was even a plane we were allowed to climb into! For that one, head past the Red Ball Express and Woodland Auto Display buildings. In the area off to the side there, we saw a few more planes being worked on and displayed. And while I don't have an interest in vehicle or military memorabilia, I do have an interest in restoration and maintenance, which they do a lot of here. Unfortunately, we weren't able to visit the restoration hangars (Al Schade Restoration Hangar and Hangar One in the back) on the day we went, as they needed to get some of the vehicles ready for the aforementioned parade. Car collection has everything from race cars to old classics to historical vehicles, apparently all owned by one person, in the Woodland Auto Display. They also have seating outdoors so that, on nicer days, I think you can picnic or hang out here? We were told it gets very hot here though. It's just that we happened to be there during the winter and on a cloudy, somewhat rainy day. Overall, would recommend visiting if you're in town and want something that's not eating or drinking at the vineyards. read more

What an amazing treat! I was in town with my son on leave from the Marines. We were visiting family that is local and told us about this incredible museum. So I've been to several air museums across the country. We were very impressed with this museum. It's not often that you get an opportunity to see not only airplanes, tanks, military vehicles, uniforms and a huge classic/vintage car museum all together. What truly impressed me was the care taken to restore off of these vehicles. Even the uniforms were very well taken care of and lots of information on all the different types. They had US, British. Allied and enemy uniforms. You can't miss this place if you are a fan of history or anything military. The icing on the cake is the amazing car collection museum included. read more

This place is super cool. My twin 7 yr old boys and I had a blast. We even got to assist putting one of their planes back into the hangar after it landed. We signed up for the family membership as it's a great place to hang out for a break from Mom and Sis" horse show. We will be back there in another 5-6 weeks. read more

I'm glad my friend knew about this place and suggested it, because my husband and I are 'museum people.' Meaning, we do enjoy going through museums when we travel. The Dick Woodland Car Collection is at the same site as the Estrella Warbird Air Museum, and you pay one entrance fee to see both, BUT the Car Collection is listed as a separate attraction here on Trip Advisor, and I reviewed it separately. There are several sections of the Warbird Museum. The first is the Gift Shop with a few displays. Then there is the main room, which goes in chronological order from WWI to WWII to the Korean War to the Vietnam 'conflict' to the Gulf Wars. In this section, some attention is paid to women warriers. There is a smaller display about the Tuskegee Airmen. Then an even smaller (almost non-existent) display about the Navajo Code Talkers. The actual warbirds are on display outside. My friend, who is a pilot, enjoyed the display. The rest of us chose to skip it. We not only visited in August but there was a heat wave; and we'd left our hats in the car. My husband and I are returning in February. We'll check out the war planes at that time when the weather is cooler. When you visit, be sure to put on sunscreen and wear a hat. Then there is a room with military vehicles, such as jeeps. Then, finally, is the room in which weaponry is displayed. Every where you look, the weapons developed to tear people apart. I found it both sick and sickening to think about what those weapons do to the human body. This is a worthwhile place to visit. It is a reminder that war is hell. Whoever leads our great nation should be someone who takes sending troops into harm's way very seriously and would never do it lightly because 'troops' is military-speak for your sons, your grandsons, your husbands and sometimes your daughters, sisters, mothers and wives. You know, real people. I was reminded once again that the USA is still the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons on our enemies. It's sobering. read more

We came in midday and explored for ~1.5-2 hours. This was probably longer than most people. Took so many photos of each plane out there. And who wouldn't love a good race car/classic car collection? Most of the cars there belong to one man I was told. I mean, what did he do for a living?! When we were leaving, the sweetest lady gave my sons each a souvenir to top it off! I highly recommend checking this place out on vacation or passing by. So much history and awesome stuff to see with the sweetest staff. read more

A hidden gem for Paso Robles tourists, named after the Estrella Army Air Force Base (now the Paso Robles airport). Open 10am-4pm Thurs-Sun (plus Mon holidays). Adults $12, 60+ $10, students with ID $8, vets $10 (free on Veteran's Day!), active military with ID = FREE! Suggest you take advantage of the 10am opening because it can get *HOT* out there! Many aircraft and military machines outside in the gravel. You walk in to the cashier and the gift shop. The museum, gift shop, Red Ball Express display and Woodland Auto Display are all inside, but the rest of the collection is outside. A little depressing to me to see all those cool aircraft & tanks just deteriorating in the hot desert sun. Too bad there's not enough money to erect carport shades over them. They also have a restoration garage where you can sometimes watch volunteers work on the museum collection. Oh yeah: cold water bottles available for a suggested $2 donation in a refrigerator at the door. Worth! They do have a F/A-18 simulator, but sounds like you need to make reservations: it was booked up when we arrived at 10 am. read more

Loved this place. Lots of Navy planes and a few Air Force ones too. But there's so much more than just the planes, the interior displays were fantastic with bombs, missiles, trucks, stuff, things, and all were well-documented. The Automobile museum is incredible also! Nascar, Indy, and of course Sprint cars are proudly shown. Lots of great history here. I could only devote 2 hours to this place but I could have spent 20! Any military, aviation, classic vehicle and automotive enthusiast must stop, a very cool and diverse collection of military aircraft that spans multiple decades back to the first world war along with a very impressive number of classic and sports cars, all of it in remarkably nice original condition. The museum spans through several buildings, as well as outdoors. You should expect at least a few hours or longer, to walk through it all. We spent close to three hours there and you could easily spend more time with all of the displays and information available. The docent staff we spoke with were all very friendly and knowledgeable as to the history of pretty much everything within the museum and will actually take a little time with you if you just ask. A couple of them were a wealth of knowledge. Sigh. Another day at the museum. Its tough being retired, you know. This was a special treat for the old man, aka Mr. B, especially after he started his serious searches for authenticity. (This has to do with his newfound love, model building) But frankly, there is something for everyone. Just so you know, I am traditionally a reluctant participant, but turns out, even I found excitement here. Estrella is located past the wineries, out in vast open fields. It consists of a big complex of buildings, some set aside for the museum displays, some for actual repairs and restorations. There is a huge tarmac where their beautiful old planes sit and watch the world go by after their active duty days have ended. Some you can actually climb in and peek. And there is a big landing strip for when they are launched on a special memorial flight. You'll find plenty to look at, not just planes. Life-sized displays, vintage armory, artillery and cars, videos, models, and the docents who love to answer your questions and perhaps, reminisce. And for those looking for a little bit more, there is a very well stocked library where you can sit and pour through an amazing collection of books that have been donated to their museum. There are several folks on staff that can help you find what you need and wow you with their knowledge. They have special events scheduled through the year, even monthly dinner speakers. Check their website for dates and times if you like to rub elbows with the elite and knowledgeable. A great place for adults and kids alike. Dropped by for a quick first time visit on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Several groups of folks already here but plenty of parking. The place is easily found with ample road signs once you get in the general area. The inside exhibits show uniforms, insignia and equipment used by aviators and soldiers during each of the major wars. There are plenty of really nice scale models of all types of aircraft on display with a bonus flight simulator in the back free of charge. If you enjoy vintage electronics, they have an entire corner dedicated to early aviation and military radios along with several entire avionics displays from World War II aircraft. Next door is another building chock full of military vehicles including several versions of Jeeps, a half track and even a meat wagon ala M*A*S*H. They are all behind ropes but you can get pretty close to them to take a look. The other building next to this one houses an impressive selection of racing cars and vintage autos. I included a photo of a beautiful REO Speedwagon the Winnebago of the 40s. Wonder outdoors to the aircraft garden for viewing of several nice specimens of post WWII aircraft including a beautiful F86 Sabre, A6E Intruder and F14 Tomcat. Sprinkled in amongst the planes are WWII vehicles including some APCs and trucks. To top it off they have a tank turret simulator tucked in a corner that you can climb in to check out. It doesn't move though and make sure your tetanus shot is up to date as it is getting rusty inside. Not sure what you were allowed to climb on or not but they seemed pretty chill here. I assumed anything without a sign on it or roped off was fair game. Bring the kids for an hour or two and they'll have a blast. We paid $10 an adult to get in discounts for seniors and families available. read more
