I am deeply concerned about the quality of the product. In the 10-15 years I had used this bakery, I gained trust and confidence to use them for every special event. Recently, they not only did a poor job with my daughter's Sweet 16 cake, they didn't even use the colors that I asked them to on the flowers. The writing was unprofessional and tacky looking. So we've been huge fans of Bulgarini Gelato since moving to Altadena over a year ago (pssst...winters here bring capps and roasted chestnuts!) but we had never ventured across the way to Pastries by Nancy....until last month. I thought it was just this little hole in the wall place that baked adequate but nothing special cakes and pastries. Surprise! Not so. Upon walking in you get the feeling of a quaint little baked goods shop but it is so much more. The available cakes were in abundance and uniquely shaped and designed. The frosting isn't overpowering the look of the cakes. "hat box" shaped cakes dominate here but I would prefer that to a standard overly decorated, sickly sweet work of fluff. The red velvet cake that my son ordered was rich and delicious with a subtle hint of chocolate, which is what a red velvet cake should taste like but never really does. I ordered not a pecan pie but a pecan "square", that tasted just like a pie....but wasn't. We tasted the lemon tart and drooled over the chocolate draped strawberries. Everything was so mouth wateringly good that I requested a business card and told them I would Yelp them very positively. There should be more bakeries like this one. Oh yah....and overpriced? Hrmmm....bought the red velvet cake (which was your average sized cake) for the same price that I've bought Ralph's brand red velvet which doesn't compare to Nancy's at all. Ever. read more

This was one of the bakery options that was included in our wedding package at Altadena Country Club for our cake. I'm not sure whether we settled on them becuz they were closer to the venue or because they were the 2nd place we went to and didn't really care, but we're glad we did. Their cakes are delicious. We picked a cake with a simple design becuz we knew we were gonna have the florist decorate it. We did, however, pay extra (something like 35 bucks) to add fresh fruit -- way worth the cost. We didn't experience any difficulties when dealing w/ them and pretty much didn't really deal with them much -- here's the cake we want, add the fruits, show up at our wedding-- done. The location is in a rundown strip mall, but that's what you expect from a bakery, right? For a wedding cake, add the fruit -- it's worth it. read more

At first I was a little skeptical because I bought a groupon for $9 for a dozen cupcakes but let me tell you how delicious those cupcakes were! Beat deal ever! Came here a few months ago for my cake tasting. We were greeted by Shaun who was really welcoming and out us at ease. He sat us down gave us two cups of the BEST coffee ever. He said to relax and he hoped we brought our appetite. When he sat down he explained to us that this is a consultation and that he is here for us. He brought out 3-4 different types if cakes, kept refilling our coffee, answered all our questions brought out different combinations and even gave us his honest opinions about everything cake related. This store has the best tasting cakes ever. 6 years ago my wife and I ordered our wedding cake from here and were delighted with the taste, design, and service. The cake tasting was easy to schedule and super fun. We just ordered our daughters birthday cake and my daughter who is very picky loved three different ones. Her favorite was the chocolate cake but the white cake with Bavarian cream was the best Ive ever had and their red velvet was amazing too. The fillings are all really good as well. They have these tiny cakes you can buy and taste before you order the big one. I would recommend this for any large celebration or just to indulge in on a cheat day! The store has plenty of parking since its in a shopping center and very remote. Closed on Sundays and Mondays so call before you go in. read more

Pastries by Nancy made our wedding cake, and it was superb. From the moment we first walked in for the tasting, I had a good feeling about this "hole in the wall" place. The staff were very friendly and let us "taste" a really embarrassing quantity of cake. It was ALL delicious, and we had a hard time deciding on a flavor, but eventually decided on a chocolate with chocolate raspberry filling (with fresh berries). On the day of the wedding, our cake arrived on-time and looked perfect. Even better, it tasted amazing. Our guests raved about how delicious it was. Back in the day, my roommate used to order their lemon meringue tart through Bristol Farms in the South Bay. It was one of the best desserts this dessert aficionado has ever had! I don't like traditional meringue that tastes like foam; this one had a perfect lemon curd (not too tart, not too sweet) topped with wonderful meringue that was like a cross between whipped cream and marshmallow! If it weren't over an hour from my home I might actually make the trip to get one. If I can't find a recipe online, I just might do it. read more

Forget about the horrible reviews, that must have been a hoax bc this place makes awesome wedding cakes and we ordered it for our upcoming wedding and Shawn is such a nice guy, he is the owner and very helpful and generous esp during our caketasting. We ordered the white cake with Bavarian cream and usually I would never opt for chocolate Bavarian cake, but OMG his was fantastic not too sweet and he uses Godiva chocolate! The cream is NOT like Crisco...I would say it is in between a whipped cream/butter cream texture. It's pretty light and fluffy. Yum! read more

Not only are the scones, cakes, cookies and muffins great! They now have sandwiches. We stop buy our bike ride we do on Saturdays for some lunch and bought the special which was hot chicken and potatoes. OMG it was soo good. We used Pastries by Nancy for our wedding cake last January, and just reordered a mini version for our one year anniversary this month. Shawn was super easy to work with, and most importantly, the cake was super delicious. We did a few weeks before the wedding and settled on a vanilla cake with Bavarian cream, strawberries and raspberries, and with butter cream on the outside. SO good, I'm disappointed I didn't get to eat more during our wedding. In terms of design, we showed him a picture of what we wanted and he was able to replicate it without a problem. I ordered a three tier cake for November 19th 2011 and the cake looked great. The first time I went tasting was around June with my aunt. We LOVED the marble the most and then the lemon and the red velvet (could not decide). Shawn was very polite in explanation of the cakes and what they company is known for. Very informative. So since I had gone to several other cake boutiques, I knew I wanted Peter to come taste this place. When Peter and I went together, he actually liked the red velvet cake. However, we decided to get a two tiered cake with lemon as the bottom and red velvet on the top. Then four weeks before the event I had to pay the rest of the payment for the cake and Peter and I decided to make it a three tier for the extra people attending. So we told Shawn we wanted the top to be red velvet, the middle to be marble, and the bottom to be lemon with strawberries. He wrote it down and then it was upgraded. On the day of the reception, the cake looked great! We took a lot of pictures with the cake and even one with Shawn. He got there at 4:30pm and that was perfect. I was a little worried when it was getting closer to the beginning but they made it just when I was making a phone call. The cake was simply cute, but I wish it wasn't so cartoon like and more elegant. When we did cut the cake, the lemon with the strawberries tasted GREAT. I wish I took some home and left some more for myself. Also the red velvet was delicious. Of course Peter and I took the top of the cake home. I was so excited about tasting the top of the cake. So about two weeks later, I took it out of the fridge to try it. I was excited it was going to be marble because that was my favorite. However, when I sliced it and tried it, I was very disappointed. It was actually white cake with cream cheese. So I called Pastries by Nancy the next day to see what they could do. It was too late to fix it for the wedding reception, but I decided to call and see how their customer service was at a mistake. At first, I was a bit irked when they were trying to blame me for it was my mistake changing it 4 weeks before the wedding. But if it wasn't possible, they should have told me then before I changed it. I didn't like how they started to state I had changed it which is why there was a mistake. However, during the change, all they did was cross things out instead of making a new sheet of paper with all the other scribbles on there. No wonder it was hard to read. If I was making the cake I wouldn't have been able to read it either. In the end, they said it was OK so long as I don't change anything else. After the initial blame, I explained to them that they wrote it down that it was suppose to be, red velvet on top, marble in the middle, and lemon with strawberries. They realized the mistake and quickly changed to giving me a cake for Christmas. They decorated it and asked us to pick it up on the 23rd of December. It looked and tasted great. Just like the marble cake from the first time I tried it. So overall, it was a satisfying situation. The customer service the first day was great and so was the delivery. The mistake recovery good. I just wanted them to know that it was not nice to start to blaming a customer that they are the one that changed it and so it's their mistake. They should look before saying anything close to that assumption. That was the only thing that turned me off. Otherwise, their cake is amazing. Sean is pretty clear about the types of cakes that he does. If you want it in a crazy shape and decorated like they do in those cake competitions on TV, then this is not the place for you. He cares more about the taste than the wow factor. He does not do fondant, only bavarian cream. I ordered a 2 tier wedding cake with a simple design in mind and he was able to execute it pretty well from a photo I provided. Anyone who mentioned the cake to me after the wedding only had good things to say about it. Sean however, does not possess the greatest customer service. His assistant speaks English as a second language and that can get frustrating. Someone pointed out to me that he is more willing to talk to the person actually paying for the cake...so if that's your mom, then send your mom to the bakery to have a chat with him. Yes, going in person to discuss details is way more effective than attempting that over the phone. read more

Our wedding package at the Altadena Town & Country Club included a cake if we ordered it through one of their contracted local bakeries. We called around a bit, but after a tasting at Pastries, we realized they were the most flexible with what we wanted (they agreed to adapt the price to two cakes -- a wedding and groom's cake). The tasting went well, though Shawn is not the biggest people person. You have to look past it, and just be patient and know that your cake will turn out great. I was quite literal with him -- showing him images of what I wanted, and he definitely produced it. The cake was wonderful -- fresh raspberries in the filling. With planning from a distance and the whirlwind of coming into town for the wedding, I had completely forgotten the detail of a cakestand. Shawn left us with a beautiful one at no charge. We were so grateful. I would recommend him. Just be prepared to get slightly frustrated every now and then with his people skills, but I do promise that it is worth it. read more

I fell in love with Pastries by Nancy cake when I went to have my tasting for my wedding. We ordered a two layer white with Bavarian cream and the chocolate with Bavarian cream cake. We had a specific pictures, one found on THEIR website, and brought it too them stating it was the exact cake we wanted, with the colors gold, with a white pattern and black trim. 2 DAYS before the wedding, the owner called and stated he would not be able to make my cake the way I wanted because the black would bleed. I compromised with him and changed to a dark silver. I did specify that I still wanted the majority of my cake gold, which he agreed to do. What kind of vendor calls 2 days before a wedding to change things? The day of my wedding I was heartbroken. He did not provide me with what I asked for in terms of design. They did not give me the gold cake I requested. After, when I talked with the owner regarding why they chose not to go with what I had requested, his initial response ways, "what do you want me to do about it now". After explaining that he did not provide me with what we requested, he stated he would call me back after talking to his employees. I had to call later to finish dealing with the situation because he did not return my call. In return, he finally reimbursed me half of my design fee. Although the cake was delicious, I would not recommend this bakery due to the lack of customer service I received. The owner was quite rude and the employees were vague and not very helpful. read more

Been ordering cakes from them for years. A couple of years back they did change owners and their customer service is now horrible! Last time I ordered a cake from them I went in and explained in detail what I wanted for my sister's sweet 16 cake. It was supposed to be black and white. The day I picked it up it was white, silver, and gray! I was beyond upset. Had it out with the owner who said, "Well we could not do black and white". Well, they are supposed to be the experts, right? Why didn't they tell me that when I ordered it? They still charged me the full price even though this was their fault.
