Dr. Pat Allen is rude, irascible and insensitive. I attended one of her seminars, where she proceeded to humiliate people who had dared to wade on to the stage to share their issues. This was embarrassing and difficult to watch. A close friend is a Pat Allen devotee, and she espouses Allen's ridiculous advice, including telling single women to "duty-date" at least three men at once, whether you like them or not, as "practice" and to get free meals. Allen also advises single women to abstain from sex until a ring is placed on their wedding-band finger. This is not advise with any regard for reality. Allen has a signature tough style, which some mistake as authoritative. Dr. Pat Allen is best left for those who are truly hopeless, for whom a sensible option doesn't exist. read more

I have gotten a lot out of Dr.Allen and yes, she is frightening, intimidating and knows her stuff. I first went to her weekly or monthly seminars on Pico over 20 years ago, and then I started going again about 2 years ago, I've seen her privately and taken a workshop. Regarding her monthly seminar, if you get in that hot seat, you better know her book and her theories. I would never sit in that chair...but most people have done their homework and know what to expect, you can also do this on her radio show. I went to her Life Script seminar where we filled out a questionaire about ourselves and our parents...BAM, she nailed me. She told me things that my therapist of 9 years never told me and now I understand why I do the things I do...it was amazing. But, before I sat in the hot seat, I told her I was in a delicate state and I needed her to be gentle. She was kind and loving and especially caring. I look forward to going back for another seminar...or the same one, she doesn't scare me anymore at all, I've seen her loving side. I got a great deal of understanding from the seminar. Dr. Allen is unique and unorthodox and scary and brilliant and wise. I respect her a great deal...but don't sit in that seat unless you know what you are doing. She repeats her mantras and has several things that she believes...and I have to say, I wish I followed her advice to the letter when I first met her 25 years ago. read more

Many of the negative reviewers of Dr. Pat Allen didn't do their homework beforehand. Pat is not an emotive therapist (which she openly admits) where you go to her to talk endlessly about your feelings. She is action oriented, blunt, and cuts right to the chase. Going to Pat is like using a scalpel to your life. If you can't handle it then get out of the kitchen. Chosing to go to her means you're ready to make a 100% investment in changing your life no matter how difficult or painful the process is. Her work her helped provide me the tools I needed to live a truly happy, fulfilled life as well as allowing me to deal with a number of complicated situations. When I had originally met Dr. Pat Allen, I thought she was super cool. I attended many of her lectures, and she has a lot of knowledge about a lot of different issues regarding relationships. She is amazing about what she knows and how she delivers the message. Some of the things that she taught me about was: codependency, healthy relationships, dream interpretation, and unhealthy life patterns. I participated in many groups with this woman, and although she has a lot to say - she knows how to interpret situations. Being in a group, I was able to see the way she benefitted other women. She was able to help women to identify healthy and unhealthy patterns within their relationships. I will be forever grateful to the many lessons she taught me while I worked with her. She may have untraditional ways of handling a situation, and maybe some people cannot deal with the truth - and that is what Dr. Pat Allen is able to help people identify is the truth! Dr. Pat Allen had a very positive influence on me and the way that I view relationships. She also helped so many other women in the group to identify problems, and help them find healthy ways to cope/understand their issues. She has been a therapist for a very long time and she knows what she is doing. If anyone else in the other reviews thinks that she is rude, they are just unable to deal with the cold, hard facts that Dr. Pat Allen will tell you. I had initially spoken to Sue, her receptionist, who was very unwelcoming and cut me off as I was speaking. As I put some thought into it, I realized this may not be a good fit for me if her office is already coming off as rude and cold. Keep in mind, this is a therapist office. I decided to call and speak to sue and advice her that I wasn't going to schedule my appointment and wanted to make sure my personal information was discarded. I also advised her how unwelcoming she was. She said she didn't need to hear me "bitch and complain" and disconnected the call. She is rude and NASTY. When I called Dr. Allen to advice her of the situation, she was just as rude and disconnected the CALL. I wouldn't go here even if it were for free. What kind of Dr. treats people like this. A bunch of hog wash! Find yourselves a kind, compassionate therapist people. Shes not it, and neither is her staff. read more

I heard Pat Allen speak in Los Angeles a couple times about 20 years ago and her theories about relationships were interesting and seemed helpful. I heard her speak again a couple years ago in Orange County and it was upsetting to see her humiliate women onstage who were very vulnerable as they talked about their problems with relationships. Her manner seem unkind and lacked empathy. Instead of explaining to the women what she would do in their situation, she shamed them for the mistakes that she felt they were making. A woman who brands herself on being a communication expert specially in relationships? Perhaps Pat Allen should start with herself? A soft quiet voice, accompanied with consideration for others would be a great start, right? I am happy and thought I would connect with Pat Allen to see if I could be better, why not? I showed up on time , my first time, She was running half an hour late there was a wait. Surprised, that she or her assistant did not take the time to call re: running behind, it was a work day and i wanted to be sensitive with her time. When she came out, she was abrupt, and did not take accountability for her actions, and shifted towards a client who needed her. My response was simple, have someone contact your patients when you are running late. She got agitated, "My male side is coming out" Fire me." I laughed to myself, male voice ? I indicated, I understand,and now she will be on time for her next patient all good. For someone who gets' paid to guide people in need, to those having issues with someone they love, An act of kindness towards the one you love and yourself is the first step Everyone wants to be understood with sensitivity and compassion.
