Tiny place but wow what a selection! The place is very clean and organized. It was easy to find what I needed and explore items I ended up deciding I needed anyway. The stock is from floor to ceiling. Produce is in the first aisle with a great selection of the must have items we cannot find in the local markets. Peppers, radish, gourds and fruit. I was there for spices and tamarind chutney, which I found. Also found onion kulcha in the freezer section. Garam masala 4oz spice pouch, channa masala 4oz spice pouch, asafetida, green onion, chutney and kulcha for less than $16. I'll definitely be visiting more often. read more

This small market packs a punch. They maximize the space and jam pack it with ingredients for Indian cooking. I loved walking down the spice aisle and the dried good selections. I took a shortcut and picked up frozen pre-made items. Small produce selection which looked fresh. An hour after opening on Sunday, they were almost out of samosas. Located in a srip mall. read more

It's a small store but it does have a pretty extensive stock. Good selection of Indian groceries, vegetables, sweets, snacks and pooja items. Better variety of fresh produce than other stores in the area. Nice place to find all Indian staples. Well worth a visit. I frequent this store when i am in the area. read more

Stopped in to pick up some snacks for a virtual Chai class I was taking. The shop is smaller in footprint but packs a lot of stock in it. There's a refrigerated section, a bit of produce, and loads of dry goods including spices, snacks, staples like rice and more. It was my first time visiting but it won't be my last! I'm glad I broke the ice and look forward to coming here again to pick up some ingredients and explore Indian cuisine. read more

If you already cook Indian food, or have recently been dreaming of delving into the delicious realm of Indian spices and flavors, now's your chance. This major chain of Indian grocery has opened up a location in Ann Arbor and it is brand-spankin'-new! It is so very clean and so well-organized. The aisles are marked with signs which are very helpful for the first-timer. Not too big, not too small - three aisles - easily navigable. The produce is mostly fresh, though a few items were a little wilted or soft. The spices come in gigantic bags and are refreshingly affordable. Instead of paying 5 bucks for a tiny jar of coriander at WholePaycheck, come here and drop 3 bucks on a giant ziplock bag full. Aside from the spices there are dozens of varieties of grains, flours, jarred chutneys and condiments, frozen meals, and 'exotic' veggies and fruits, as well as gigantic containers of yogurt (more than a gallon!). The man who was working when we entered greeted us immediately in a genuinely warm and laid-back fashion. Big smile. Put us right at ease. So far I'm pretty darn tootin' excited. The only way this place could be better is if it had a little cafe and/or had house-made spice mixtures. But if it's affordable, bulk, familiar or enticingly-new ingredients you need, this is one convenient little market. read more

Very good selection of produce, always in good condition, at excellent prices. Lots of other Indian cooking staples, along with a wide array of heat-and-eat Indian meals and Indian snacks. Some hot take-out food, like samosas, is available at the register. This place would be a jewel except for the service. Clerks are usually scarce. Once a cashier --the only employee in the store as far as I could tell--left to chat with some people in the parking lot for long time. I had a question and after waiting a bit I walked to with window and held up the item I wanted to ask about, trying to catch his eye. He looked in my direction but just kept yakking. He was still at it when I gave up and left five minutes later. If you know what you want and where to find it, this can be a good place to shop. If you're not familiar with Indian ingredients or can't find what you want, you may find it frustrating. read more

4 stars for the variety on the shelves. I used to work at a Pakistani restaurant, and I was looking for ingredients to make some of my favorite foods from there. I found everything I wanted, plus ideas for more! I bought gram flour, cabbage, spinach, chaat masala, and a couple other things I forget. Don't go here expecting overly-assertive customer service or perfect hand-selected produce that looks like it's never seen a field. This isn't a big-box supermarket, for crying out loud. The produce is a little dinged-up, which apparently freaks out some people, but it's cheap, fresh, and FANTASTICALLY delicious! (You're gonna cook with it anyway; why does it have to look pristine?) I wasn't greeted when I walked in, but I always get a bit anxious when I AM asked what I'm looking for, so I didn't mind. The guy at the register was on the phone when I checked out, but there were only 2 people working so I figured he needed to multitask. I will absolutely be going back, especially for baby eggplant, which are only 1.50/lb. read more

As an Indian I do a lot of Indian cooking. Mainly we do eat Indian food at home and for that we do need all kinds of spices which we usually use in our dishes. Patel Brothers have all of them. This store is consistent with their good service. The pricing is affordable. They do keep seasonal fruits too . In there frozen section they do have quite a few options. Specially on various kinds of Indian flat breads, Indian desserts, breakfast items and some more vegetables which we don't get fresh because of the weather. Patel brothers also keeps various kinds of miscellaneous items for every day use . You will find a big collection of Indian incense-sticks though they are little expensive. This place is right on the Washtenaw opposite to Arbor land . The location is great and the parking is free . If you go towards the early hours you will get the most fresh vegetables. read more

I've visited the store twice. The first time the store had just opened. There were boxes everywhere, the staff was too busy sorting and I didn't get greeted or asked if I need any help.. on the contrary I felt like I was in their way. I bought some fresh lychee fruit, which is always hard to find. Their price was $4.99 a pound which is double what I usually pay in my regular grocery store. Yesterday I decided to give them another chance. Turning left on Washtenaw to get to their store is always a challenge, especially around 5 pm. Unfortunately the store was closed. They have changed their hours and they are now closed on Tuesdays. There is nothing indicating on their website that they will be closed. Maybe I will give them one more chance.. but it won't be soon. read more

Looking for fresh and low priced produce? Head over to Patel Brothers on Washtenaw and you will find it. The prices fluctuate for seasonal availability. For the basics like cilantro (2 huge bunches for a buck), limes (five for the same price) and what I call American basics (green peppers, onions etc), not bad at all. Of course exotic fruits and veggies can be found along with spirited conversation with the owner about how to prepare whatever you're trying to create. I go for the produce. When I cannot find it here, I head elsewhere. Parking lot is a bit crazy, though. ZIpping harried cell phone in hand anxious I want to get home types fly through the wide lot making caution something of a necessity. Note: with the recent lime cartel nonsense from Mexico jacking the price of the green orb to over a dollar elsewhere, head to Patel for your limes for those margaritas. read more

They were super helpful helping me find the "chickpea flour" I was looking for and found NO where else except at Patel Brothers!! So many Gluten Free options and vegetarian options!! I give up on this place. It's a nice store and I am sure I would shop there as it's close to my work place, but I have had one time too many of being ignored as I wait at the counter to pay. Today was the last straw. As I waited, three men stood with their backs to me and worked putting together a shelf. I have put these same kind of shelves together myself. BY myself. All alone. It does not take three people. Someone had just paid for her groceries a minute or so before I approached the counter, and I know they saw me. A lost sale for Patel Brothers and I plan on telling anyone else who asks about the store. As I say, this was not the first time, just the most blatant. Pretty disgusted. read more

Ann Arbor Patel Brothers is only good for vegetables, except for other stuff be careful for expired dates, they hide expiry dates with stickers sometime & if asked there response is like "that why we have reduced prices". Worst attitude if you show them there mistakes or return something. read more
