We walked through this market to get to the pizza shop. We were surprised to see such a great collection of food options. Everything was so clean and organized. They had all kinds of food and snacks/ my husband really loved looking at the selection of meats. I've found thinly sliced ribeye for hot pot here, duck fat for cassoulet, short ribs cut for korean BBQ, PIG SKIN for xiao long bao and more...they really basically have everything - especially for some harder to find meats for Chinese dishes. They also have the "classics" from sausage to steak. Everything has been really fresh! Also pretty recently -- they came through for our Thanksgiving meal. A butcher (not in Ann Arbor) forgot our Prime Rib Roast order. I IMMEDIATELY called Sparrow Meat Market & they saved the day with a 2 hour pick up. Before all the madness of our current times, I wandered through Sparrow Market in Kerrytown just to browse the aisles. What I found was a perfectly fine neighborhood market, with a well curated selection of foods, a dynamite meat counter, and prices that seemed reasonable, if maybe a little on the higher side for some things. Since I don't live in the neighborhood, the chance of me being a customer were very small. Well, except if I were going to be looking for some kind of special meat, in which case this would be my first call. Fast forward a couple of months, and now gathering groceries is a growing concern. I won't expound on the subject of getting deliveries through one of the web based services, or trying to get an appointment for curbside delivery from one of the big chain grocers, or dealing with the inability of other consumers to properly engage in social distancing. When I called Sparrow Market, they were able to gather my pressing grocery order in just about an hour, and deliver it directly into the trunk of my waiting car in their parking lot. Wow! My order was simple. I needed eggs, cream, canned tomatoes, and matzo meal. It was a little weird to place the order without knowing what brands I would get, or how much my total would be. But these are weird times. The bottom line was that the food was good (the cream was amazing), maybe a little more expensive than it might be elsewhere, but the service was exceptional. Especially for today's challenging times. Bravo! I will not forget Sparrow Market once the fog of the virus passes. And I'm keeping the phone number for the main grocery section (734.769.2725) close at hand. These guys have our collective backs, and I for one am thrilled to have their support. read more

More than a meat market -- Sparrow offers a good selection of different ingredients, drinks, and snacks for a tasty meal. The vegetable produce section isn't the biggest but it does contain very fresh and good ingredients. I've gone here for the past two years to get duck for the holidays. Each duck has turned out to be of great quality and is sourced from great places (i.e. Maple Leaf Farms). They've got tons of other cuts as well of fresh meat. Prices aren't bargain bin (in a good way) but are certainly more than reasonable for the quality that you get. Parking can sometimes can packed in the neighborhoods around the holiday, but it doesn't take too too long to find a spot. read more

Ordered a crown roast from them for a family dinner and it was such a breeze. Just called them up a few days before, placed the order, and picked it up on the Friday before the big day. It was pretty quiet at the counter so I walked right up and was able to get some help right away. It took all of 3 minutes to grab my order which was great since I was in a bit of a hurry. They asked me if I needed any help with how to cook it but since we had a recipe at home I declined although I thought it was nice of them to offer though. I love this place. Every thing I have ever bought here is high quality. Located in Kerrytown, it allows you to also pick up fish, Zingerman's bread, vegetables and fruit all in the same area. On Wednesday I bought some quail. They are frozen, 4 to a pack. They have the wires in them to help them lay flat for cooking. The staff are knowledgeable and can give you cooking tips. read more

I think that one of the coolest things about Sparrow Meat Market is the sheer number of female butchers that work there. Where else can you walk in, as I did this evening, to find FIVE skilled women working the meat counter?! Very bad ass! Aside from my awe for these knife-wielding women, Sparrow offers a respectable number of hard to find, gourmet items in addition to the diverse spread of the meat counter. One of my favorite new finds is duck bacon! Try it, trust me. The market is also convenient in its proximity to the neighboring fish market, wine store, and specialty oil vendor to complete your "Master Chef"-worthy meal. read more

I like Sparrow Market, I don't love Sparrow. I will not likely ever be a Sparrow regular. I do swing by from time to time but only if I'm in the area and looking for something semi specific. The meat is good. In many cases very good. It's also overpriced. Unapologetically overpriced. I hate to be uber critical because it is quality product and the service is top notch here. Friendly, knowledgable and you will be able to get exactly what you want. As my wise friend Mickie W tells true, if you are a smart shopper you can get anything from here cheaper elsewhere. Not everyone is savvy though, not everyone wants to hunt around, drive from place to place and hey not everyone is as cheap as I am. It's cute in here and they bring the charm too. Sometimes I do buy from here and I am never disappointed with the results except it's usually a special occasion type meal, not a weekly habit. I have seen things here at decent prices, especially fruits and veg. I'm not saying you can't get a bargain but overall this is not a reasonably priced place to shop for me. This place is trying to kill me. Standing in front of that thirty yard long meat case makes me want to eat red meat three times a day, every day. I don't think there's a butcher shop in Ann Arbor that sells a larger variety of high quality meats. Besides the common steaks, roasts, chops, and standard ground meats, they offer some unique creations and items that aren't often sold fresh (e.g., duck, wild boar; beef, pork, duck, or venison burgers mixed with cheeses, vegetables, or fruit). Over the glass case is a sign listing items not on display but available by request. Want chicken feet for making stock? Beef tongue for a memorable salad? Tripe? Just ask. It's worth noting that they carry some USDA prime grade beef, something rarely seen in stores. They have some great housemade sausages too. If you're looking for a steak, be warned--theirs tend to be very large. One NY strip or ribeye usually suffices for my wife and I. Some people find their prices prohibitive, but I've always thought they were quite reasonable, and I am not by any means wealthy. True, their stuff costs more than Kroger's or Meijer's, but less than similar meats at Whole Foods or Plum Market. Plus, at Sparrow you're generally buying something of superior quality. And there is no one who will be selling prime grade steak at $6.99 a pound. Some great deals can be found in the rest of the store. A lot of their fruits, vegetables and cheeses cost less than at my local supermarket. My one complaint about Sparrow is that they don't carry grass finished beef or lamb, which I usually buy when I can. True that would raise the price the meat some, but that's an investment I usually don't mind making. As I write this, we're smack in the middle of grilling season. Time for another visit. read more

This review is for the deli in Sparrow. If you don't have cash, which I usu. don't, you can even add the tip to your credit card at the counter. OMG duck salad! It is perfectly cooked and tender slices of duck over greens, with walnuts and dried cherries... such a perfect combination, and a portion that will fill you up. At just $8 I can afford to actually grab lunch here on the regular! I also tried the Turkey sandwich and it comes with brie and avocado and thick cut crunchy bacon with the perfect tangy-sweet mustard dressing. And that Chicken Salad! Roasted chicken, Avocado, a perfectly cooked fried EGG, beets, Sprouts, feta... What a hearty salad! This is a great place to grab quality fast food lunch! I just bought a whole fryer chicken, 2 pounds of Applewood-smoked bacon, and a pound and a half of their Hungarian Sausage. I think I really need to not buy any meat anywhere else forever. I have always been scared away by the parking situation, because, you know -- Ann Arbor -- but I will just make a way to come at times when parking is easier. Or I will rent a helicopter and land on the roof, because Sparrow Meat Market is the best place to buy meat in this arm of the galaxy. The quality of their various meats and the helpfulness and skill of their butchers is beyond anything I have seen. It's a pleasure to buy from them. This place is fine if you show up in person; it's got groceries that are hard to find anywhere else and quick checkouts. If you're calling, though...be prepared for rudeness. I felt like the employee who gave me the number to transfer couldn't wait to get me off the phone and the employee I spoke to eventually couldn't be bothered. I don't expect 24/7 cheerfulness, but I felt this service was way, WAY below that of the supermarkets I've called previously. So 3 stars, although it really should be 2.5. I bought 2 separate loads of bread on Sunday and they were so hard and chewy you could get whiplash and break your teeth! I've never paid 11.50 for 2 loafs of stale bread. The meat department is pretty good. Produce? Sad during the middle of August. Looked out of state or old. What the? And "farmers market" ? More like a craft market. Stopped hoping to buy Michigan corn, tomatoes, peaches...... nothin. Very disappointed. I saw lots of different state license plates in the parking lots around. I've told my husband I won't buy our beef anywhere else as long as we live in A2. The prices are great, the meat is very fresh and cured so it always tastes delicious. The cuts are high-quality. $7.99 NY Strip, $2.99 ribs, $4.99 T-bone-- great deals. The staff are incredibly helpful and totally accommodating. They'll take the chorizo out of the case for you or cut the meat until you've got the exact amount you want, they'll answer any question, no matter how basic or complex, with patience and kindness. I'll be honest, I've never used a butcher before, but I can't imagine better service. This place has transformed my meat-buying experience! read more

This place is legit. Things I have gotten there this summer include -a whole packer brisket -delmonicos -flank steak -more flank steak It was all super delicious. They also had beef rib the first time I went but have not had it the last few times :(. The people who work there really know their way around meat. Be it cutting things to order or just the initial slicing/portioning of the meat they seem very skillful- a rarity in this day and age. Sparrow is situated amongst other stores that also have delicious foods like fresh seafood and lobster bisque, as well as pretty good produce. The big complaint is price, and yes it is very pricey- so if 3 dollar steaks are your thing by all means go to Meijer and stay away from my BBQ. read more

I've only bought a few things here, but they have all been top rate, and the rest of the selection looks great--can't wait to go back. I highly recommend the Apple-Wood Smoked Bacon, which is probably about twenty times better than oscar-meyer and not that much more expensive. The prices here in general seem to be really good for the quality. The San Marzano canned tomatoes I like are only $2.75 here. They are about a dollar more at The Produce Market and even more than that at Zingerman's. read more

I use to purchase their ready-made food, potato salad, chicken salad, pasta salad... etc. Recently "Taste-our-goods" was replaced by Sparrow Market's own menu where you can build your own sandwich and smoothie, which I thought was a great idea! Little did I know.... My very first purchase was a smoothie, which costed me $5. I stood there waiting while it was being made, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. The girl used her bare hand to scoop ice into the blender (which I do not recall seeing any washing), and later grabbed a peach from the market, without washing again, cut it up with skin on it, and threw it in the blender!!! I didn't feel comfortable AT ALL putting that smoothie down my throat, so I asked for a refund. I was then led to talk to the "manager", who sipped my drink right in front of me (as to make a point?). I'll NEVER purchase any of their house-made-food again, and for those of you who are thinking of trying, EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!! One more thing, if you are purchasing anything from the market, make sure you know how much you are being charged! From all the different times I've been there, their prices fluctuate from day to day. Exact same bottle drink, day 1 was $1.99, day 2 was $2.99, then day three was $1.99 again. This doesn't just happen with drink, it also happens with other products they carry. As long as it's not priced, you don't know what you are paying for the day. WATCH OUT!!! read more

The meat is surprisingly cheap! Almost every item costs less than what I've paid at chains (specifically meijer). Hamburger meat is $2.99/lb versus $4-5/lb and a rack of lamb is $16 vs $22+. It's really fantastic pricing, especially for such high quality meats! The butchers are also super helpful and happy to answer any questions. Their fruit and veggies and pretty reasonable priced, but not the cheapest. I've always been incredibly happy with the quality, though. They have fresh squeezed orange juice, which is incredibly delicious! I'm always happy to pay a bit more for high quality OJ. Their dairy products are super expensive, but it's super close to my home so I'll definitely grab it there in a pinch (and they do carry the nice organic brands, so the price does make sense). I love coming here to get nice high quality meats and even produce. I've never been disappointed in anything I've bought here! I always like to tell my friends and classmates about this place because I think it's just so wonderful! I know a lot of people might not look at smaller independent stores like this because of pricing, but if you shop right at sparrows, you can definitely save money! read more

If you live in or near Kerrytown, you should buy your meat from Sparrow. If you don't live close to the Kerrytown market, you should get in your car, drive to Kerrytown, park, and THEN buy your meat from Sparrow. The meat is the best you can buy in Ann Arbor (only rivaled by Knights). Bob Sparrow (owner) is one of the nicest, friendliest guys in town, and he's always suggests just the right cut or type of meat for whatever dinner you're attempting to prepare. The whole place makes you feel like you live in a small town where everyone knows your name and the local butcher asks how your family is. It is a bit on the pricey side, but I feel it's worth it to support a locally owned store, great service, and quality products. Bonus: Sparrow's is attached to Sweetwaters cafe, Monohan's seafood (best seafood in Ann Arbor) and Everyday wines, as well as the Saturday farmer's market. read more

I always try to get local seasonal produce at the Kerrytown Farmers' Market just outside the door, but when it's not a Saturday or Wednesday, or I can't find what I need at the farmers' market, Sparrow is the place. You can't do all of your shopping there - it's no Kroger or Busch's, but the produce is consistently great. I'm happy my friend tipped me off to the fact that they have the best/cheapest avocados in town. If you're looking to make some quick guacamole, you can pick up a couple for just 75 cents each, and they're always divided between really ripe and "ripe in a few days." read more

I must confess that while their avocados are inexpensive enough for me to make my own tub o' guac, sometimes (especially in the dead of winter) it's nice to buy it already made. I have to confess...I sort of love Bob Sparrow and the super-helpful chick who's always there when I come in for some bacon. It doesn't matter how dumb of a question I ask (I want to make a roast for two people...help!), they're always friendly and helpful. I buy all my meat from there. It also makes me feel better to know that they prioritize local meat and grass-fed beef. I think their prices are fair--not bargain basement, but some of their products (McClure's Pickles) are cheaper than in the big grocery stores! The Sparrow meat counter is one of the highlights of my grocery trip to Kerry Town. I recently purchased a whole chicken that had been raised just outside Jackson, Mich. on a non-factory farm. I really like that I can talk with the staff and find out where my food is coming from. They can make recommendations on food I'm going home to prepare and the meat quality is excellent. They sell beef bones for making stock, have fresh sausage, and a wide variety in meats. I'm looking forward to checking out their selection of bacon. read more
