For starters, I love grocery shopping and exploring markets in general so finally making it to Patel Brothers this evening was a long time coming. With locations throughout the country, I figured it would be a pretty organized and well oiled machine and it certainly was. I could have spent a solid hour perusing all of the goodies even though it's not that large of a store footprint-wise. It's been so fun to watch the Castleton area fill in with international eateries and groceries in the last few years. Viet Hua and One World Market are also a stone's throw away - amongst many others. Upon entering, you're greeted by a vibrant produce section filled with a variety of squashes, turmeric root, large bundles of fresh ginger and so on. From there, the store is filled with teas, paneers, a variety of colorful desserts soaked in cardamom syrups, freezer meals, street snacks and tea biscuits. We ended up going home with a few freezer desserts, rose water, and some of our favorite snacks. We'll definitely be back and plan to go bigger with it next time.

Patel brothers is like the go-to Indian grocery store with a wide variety of selections. They have an amazing spread of groceries. In other words, almost everything you might need for Indian cuisine and household, you can find them here. Parking is ample. The store can get busier some times especially during the weekends so expect a long wait at the checkout. The staff is friendly. Overall, a good store for all Indian groceries and produce. Would recommend this place to a friend.

They have a little food area in the back of the store, near the pan dulce, where they have tamales ready and waiting in steamers. You need to go to the register first and let them know how many and which kind of tamales you want, and they'll get them for you. I bought a dozen-and-a-half of the pork with red chile tamales, and they are very good! In fact, I'm eating one right now as I type this review! The tamales have the perfect proportion of masa to meat, and they are cooked all the way through and not at all gummy, like some tamales can get when they're not cooked properly. They have other tamales besides pork, but I was only interested in pork when I visited, so I can't tell you for sure what other kinds they have. This is also a grocery store, so there are lots of packaged Mexican foods here, as well as a small panderia with some bolillos and a selection of pan dulce. This looks to be a great place to find Mexican candy (Lucas, Tajin, tamarindo candy, those little disks of chalky peanut butter with the picture of the abuelita on them, etc.), as I saw a lot of different candies.

This is an African/Caribbean type grocery store. The owners are from Ghana. They have…read morecanned/dried goods, fresh produce, frozen meat/produce, plus some sundries. My favorite things to buy here are: 1. Jamaican ginger ale (non-alcoholic). Has a real gingery bite. American ginger ale will seem weak by comparison after trying this. 2. Plantains, very green, for slicing and deep-frying into chips. 3. Palm oil. This is a "bad" oil high in saturated fat, but I use it in moderation. One, for "seasoning" cast-iron skillets (instead of Crisco). And two, just a teaspoon added to "good oil" when cooking popcorn. (I cook regular non-microwave popcorn in a wok, using 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of peanut oil or corn oil, plus 1 teaspoon of palm oil, plus 1/2 cup of popcorn kernals.) The palm oil gives it a movie-theater flavor and a little tint of orange. 4. Canned powdered (dry) whole milk. Most powdered milk you buy at American groceries is non-fat. This has all the cream. I don't like to buy fresh milk, because I don't drink much. So I keep this around for baking. Watch the expiration date, because it doesn't keep as long as non-fat milk, but it's still usually good for at least a year. 5. Various flours, like yam flour, cocoyam flour, plantain flour, rice flour, and corn starch. 6. Exotic bar soaps. They have various imported soap, some medicated some very fragrant.

If you need Fu Fu Flour, smoked cow feet or African coconut oil, this is your place. I'm tempted to go back and buy the banana sauce for novelty. The liquid was red and thin like Tabasco, but smelled like the tropical fruit. I'm not sure what confounds me more: Why so much food coloring is added to the product, or what to do with it. I'm sure I could whip up some confections with it. If you want African garb or DVDs, you can find those here, too. It's conveniently located at the Shops on 54th Street center.

I didn't originally visit K-Kitchen to get Spam musubi, though. I've recently been obsessed with kimbap. I've eaten it for dinner two days in a row! I saw that K-Kitchen has grab-and-go kimbap, so I moseyed over to grab three rolls (and that musubi) for my family's dinner. My kids didn't really care for the kimbap, even after telling them it was a lot like sushi, which they love. But who cares what they thought: I loved the kimbap! I got two beef kimbap and gimbap, which was crab and egg. My favorite was beef, though -- it's marinated, and with that and the pickled vegetables all wrapped in rice and nori, it was delicious. I don't know if you're supposed to, but I popped my rolls in the microwave for a few seconds, just to take the cold edge off. In my opinion, kimbap tastes better at room temperature. K-Kitchen also sells jars of kimchi, Korean noodles, soybean stew and lots of other dishes. It's located inside Saraga International Grocery.
