This is a nice little grocery store on Oaktree Rd in Iselin. There's a much bigger location a few miles away. There's fresh vegetables, lentils, spices, and other Asian grocery products. Service was good and fast. You can find free parking outside. It's street parking that's mostly 2 hour parking. read more

This review is specifically for the juice maker outside. I paid for sugarcane juice inside and went outside to get my drink. The store had just opened so I was one of the first ones to get their juice. I saw that the man was not wearing gloves but didn't care much at this point since he was just cleaning up from last pour. Next he started the machine to rinse it out with wayer, without wearing gloves. Basically using his bare hands to clean the machine. He proceeded to stick his finger in the spout where the juice comes out from. He started cutting the lime and ginger without his gloves. At this point I lost my appetite because his nails were long and he had accidentally cut part of his nail off, pulled it off and threw it somewhere. I was so grossed out that I walked back in the store and asked for the refund. I let the cashier know what happened and nobody seemed to care. Awfully disappointed and disgusted. Again this review is just for the fresh juice station outside. This is how people get sick. read more

My friends and I accidentally stumbled into Patel Brothers after dinner because this supermarket was so brightly lit that it immediately caught all of our attention as we drove by. That said, we decided to stop in to see what goodies they carry and I have to say, this place was packed with great selection. Their produce section looked fresh and I loved how they also fresh curry leaves. I've cooked with fresh curry leaves before and let me tell you, the taste is far more superior than the dry ones. I also like that they have a large selection of pre-cooked frozen meals. This for me was perfect as I love Indian food but find it time consuming to cook. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at this store and would recommend checking them out if you're looking to fill up your fridge and pantry with flavor and goodness. read more

Having relied on the Patel Brothers in Jackson Heights, Queens for many years (during my visits to family in Queens) I decided to see if one existed closer to my home in Elizabeth. Now, there are two Patel Brothers shops in this area, and they are a 10 minute walk from one another so to be clear, this is the smaller location that is located in between two other shops. This is not the larger (and more modern looking) location which I believe is at 1555 Oak Tree Road in Iselin. However, that doesn't mean this is a bad location, it's just not the same one down the road. Unlike its larger siblings, this location is like a small sized bodega/market, very similar to many shops you'll find in Queens. It has a good variety of sauces, vegetables, frozen goods, snacks and treats, but each type of product has a much smaller footprint than it would in larger Patel Brothers shops. This is fine because if you just need the basics such as a chutney or rice, this shop will have you covered. The staff was neither rude or particularly cheerful. Their mood appeared firmly in the middle. Courteous but perfunctory at the same time. While I would happily head to this store again, I am very curious about the larger one nearby. read more

One of the most busiest Indian grocery store in Edison . We like shopping here , but it's tough to get parking and also billing takes a long time . We like the products here and also the vegetables are fresh. Mostly we get all groceries and many varieties. Rice, idli rice, atta , pickles and you name it . They also sell lamps/diya during navrathri times and also sell various other things during festive season. Sweets, savories etc. customer service could be better . The Iselin branch of Patel Bros has Hopeless cashiers! Rude and arrogant cashiers. The store needs to change cashiers.

These markets are looting money. Within a day of rice ban. The same product rice we're increased for existing rice present in store. This is clear manipulation of price. Also there was note: once sold can't be returned . Vegetables also see huge price manipulation based on demand. These variations not observed in other markets of US. read more

I am not a regular at this location of Patel Brothers. Usually stop by if I am at the temple in the area. It is definitely a huge store with almost all of the products you would find in an Indian grocery store in India (Honestly)! Their product is always fresh and well stocked. I usually pick up vegetables, spices, and yogurt from this location. The prices are great compared to the other Indian grocery stores in the area or even Jersey City as a matter of fact. Customer service is terrible, I am not even going to try to sugar coat it. You might as well talk to the other customers to help you navigate around the store and get suggestions on the spices. Parking lot is big, but it is always a challenge to fins parking. read more

There is no doubt that there is a growing or grown Indian community in the Edison and Iselin., New Jersey area. The newly renovated Patel Brothers cash and carry grocery store is evidence of this. The new place is more interior space and a bigger parking lot which is a welcome to shoppers who used to park on side streets. This place has big variety of indian food produces as well as spices. This place can be very busy on the weekends, but the presentation of their produce is excellent. If you like to eat guava fruit, this place has had the best I've tried so far compared to other stores I've tried. read more

With the demise of Deepa Grocery in Elizabeth, we took to the Parkway to find our Indian provisions. Although Yelp had steered us to three Indian groceries within a two block area of Oak Tree Road, we found Patel Brothers first. Shopping in small-to-midsized ethnic markets is almost always an experience in crowded aisles, unfamiliar languages on the labels, new and curious items-- and being a curiosity to your fellow shoppers. Frankly, if I saw a shop where this wasn't the case I would probably get back in the car. I detected nothing derogatory, and both our in-aisle assistance and cashier were friendly and helpful. As others have noted, both parking and the store itself were crazy busy. We brought the car to a stop in a nearby residential neighborhood, and walked a block. Once our quest for a bag of basmati rice began, we found a veritable "rice museum," an entire aisle of varieties in different sized bags. Pricing of the rice was quite good. Our search for the half-dozen bulk bags of spices which needed replenishment wasn't quite as smooth. Spices are stocked in more than one aisle, and the logic behind their placement escaped us. Rather than the budget-priced in-house re-bagging to which we are accustomed, most spices are commercially bagged "Swad" brand, and are expensive. We located everything we needed, and found a great selection of daal lentils to choose from. There appears to be a very good selection of fresh Indian produce, as well. Contrary to the store's name, they were more than happy to accept my Visa card. Parking, the cleanliness of the floors and high prices keep me from giving a more favorable review, and we may try one of the nearby competitors next time, but the Patel Brothers experience wasn't unpleasant and was productive. read more

I was amazed when I didn't see this place already on Yelp. Mostly because it seems that every Indian person in the Northeast has probably been to this grocery store at least once in their life. They have everything you and your masi could be looking for. Their produce section is pretty good and they have every dal that you could possibly think of. Be ready to get run over though in this store. People are pretty determined to get what they want and they do not care if they hit you with their enormous shopping cart. And yes, even the little grandma ladies hit too. Actually they probably hit harder than most. read more

So far, the best cash and carry I've been to. They have the cheapest and freshest produce. Even compared to Chinese markets. Here are some sample prices which of course fluctuates: Cilantro - 2 bunches for $1 Tomatoes - 0.99$/lb for red plum tomatoes Cauliflower - 1.49$/bulb They add up when you buy in bulk. Etc etc And every time I come here I ended up bringing home a new spice I've never used before. Most of their patrons are of south asian descent. They shop fast and furious. But once in a whole you'll get a friendly encounter and you can get a recipe from one of those grandmas or aunties. So far, it's nice and neat. Larger parking lot is a plus. Hopefully they upkeep this location better than other Patel Brother locations. read more

If you don't cook a lot of Indian food at home but you want to try a little, here's what Patel Brothers is good for: dried goods, hearty vegetables, packaged sauces, spices, every kind of flour you can imagine, frozen prepared food, yogurt, snacks. Here's what it's not good for: bread, drinks, leafy vegetables, prepared foods - things just looked a little old and there's too much variety within each of these categories to have enough turnover for freshness. This is the perfect example of a consumer friendly small business. These guys are competing with some bigger super markets in the area but they definitely have a more genuine attitude towards their customers...trust me on that one. I can't say that I've had the same experience as Kathy--I'm white and I get treated the same as everyone else in the store...its true that sometimes you stick out like a sore thumb sometimes, but it's all in your head, I mean a large part of their consumer base IS Indian. Also, the store has been there much longer than 10 years as I am a native of this area and can vividly remember the emerging Indian market...and the Patel Brothers was there before 1999. If you ask them for something they do their best to accommodate your shopping list and that's all I can ask for (in addition to their fair prices). Try it out, its a twist on the good old American super-market with a niche in ethnic groceries and as far as I can tell they're damn good at what they do... read more

They have great customer service. I was incorrectly billed for an item during one of my grocery trips and only realized it when I got home ( and I live far away). So, i thought, what the heck, I will just email them a copy of the receipt to their email address on the receipt marking the item for which i was incorrectly billed for. The management actually replied the next day and asked me to see the store manager on my next visit for a refund/store credit. This was a level of customer service I frankly was not expecting but was very pleasantly surprised and impressed too. I did get my refund as promised and the manager i spoke to and the boss who emailed me, were very cordial throughout the process. As others said, they have decent pricing and stock fresh groceries. I like to shop some of their frozen seafoods as you get exotic fish that you may not find in your mainstream chain grocery stores, such as Hilsa, King fish etc. It may be a bit chaotic inside but that adds to the charm of shopping in an ethnic grocery store. read more

Shopping for mangoes, I was helped by two lovely Indian women who each told me to put back what I had in my carriage and they would pick out good ripe mangoes. Oh were they good! Another helpful Indian lady gave me a web site on Indian recipes. And then gave me some tips on the recipe I was trying to assemble. Yes, the place is crowded, but so what. If you don't like crowds, don't shop there. The produce is of the highest quality, the rice, beans, mung beans and all different kinds of spices are wonderful. You'll go back again and again. It's the only place I know of to get all the different Indian specialties. Engage, enjoy, It's a wonderful cultural experience. They always sell very dark color tamarind because of which dals and sambar changes color( become very dark n looks odd) , and i m not okay with it and they dont sell cut vegetables . I wish they could sell light brown color tamarind , this is a problem which many of my friends have too. read more

This was literally the first Indian grocery store in Edison. I've been shopping there ever since I moved here because they're well grounded. 25+ years now I believe... So it follows that they obviously have built up a great reputation for fresh produce and groceries. The owner is a nice man who is always willing to personally assist you when he's around. The produce moves quickly, is constantly replenished and is always fresh. The store is crazy crowded no matter when you go. People working in and patronizing the store are just plain rude and racist. I've been here 11 years, the store is there 10 years, each time I go (it's pretty close to my house) someone makes a comment about the "white" girl. After the renovation & re-opening few months ago, this is the only market where my family shop for Indian goods. They carry all the Indian vegetables including seasonal stuff like mangoes. For now, shelves are clean and well-stocked; prices are more than reasonable and cheaper than all the neighboring stores. They also have HUGE frozen food section-- and this has been mentioned a lot lately that indian frozen food unlike American frozen crap does not have unpronounceable chemicals and harmful additives.There is no minimum for credit cards, nor are the lines crazy and unorganized like the other grocery around the corner. The biggest problem I had before was parking -- but after the renovation, the parking is a bit easier here because they have a HUGE parking lot now. read more
