An Asian supermarket that is ethically Taiwanese located in Edison, NJ. The only way to access this supermarket for transportation is by car. After a sobering visitation for a beloved family member within New Jersey state, we patronized Kam Man Food to pass time while waiting for a cafe to open for the day. There is a free parking lot shared with neighboring businesses. Kam Man Food sits at 511 Old Post Road shopping complex. There is baked goods and a prepared pre-cooked Dim Sum items, a fish market, and some Chinese bamboo plants. My party found Kam Man Food extortionate high priced for a lot of items. Chinese vegetable, bok choy is $4.99 per pound where I can purchase this for $3.26 per pound key market price also in Queens, NYC. One whole red snapper fish, the display signage was $12.00 per piece where this same fish in Queens, NYC would be $10.50. Looking back, our sales receipt honestly state an utter disdain extortionate $15.07 for one whole red snapper fish!! Oh! This business practice price gouging where price is exorbitant high. We suffered from intense buyer's remorse. Cashiers appeared disgruntled with an melancholy indifferent attitude, as noted by a Yelper. Respectfully, I was not impressed with this Asian supermarket and neither was my party. Sales receipts are physically printed in English and Traditional Chinese. There is a small seating area with tables near the exit. Store policy: No refund. "Fish, meat, bread, produce, and refrigerated/frozen items may be exchanged within 2 hours of purchase w/ receipt. Other items within 7 days w/ receipt." Nota Bene: Effective May 4, 2022, New Jersey implemented one of the nation's strictest bag bans which prohibits single-use plastic bags and paper bags at large grocery stores. It's been a while since I've visited, and man did I do some damage to my wallet! It was crowded (of course!), and the service was friendly. Parking was a little crazy because there were quite a few snow piles in the lot. My first stop is always the prepared food section - picked up: - roast pork (char siu) - crispy pork belly (siu yuk) - dimsum (they had a sale of 5/$20): 3 boxes of shrimp dumplings (har gow), 1 box of pork dumplings (shumai) and 1 box of fried glutinous rice dumplings (ham sui gok) - pineapple buns (bolo bao) - sweetened soybean milk - Chinese fried dough sticks (a great complement to the soybean milk) For the pantry, I grabbed some white pepper powder, hot sesame oil, and instant noodles (Shin Ramyun). This location has been open for over 30 years, and management has changed over the past few years (the prior general manager passed away and his stepson took over the business). The overall personnel at this location has taken a turn for the worst. First of all, KM accepts all kinds of welfare cards as source of payment, so they attract customers who take their time to count every penny. This annoys the cashiers and slows down the overall checkout process. Then, the cashiers get frustrated and rush through the next customer's checkout. Today, this Cantonese speaking cashier got so frustrated that she thought she missed one of our items. Except she didn't know how to read English or Chinese (both were printed on the receipt), which clearly listed the item in question which we clearly paid. We get that the prior customer clearly frustrated you, but that was not the excuse for your incompetence, and for you being unable to read English and/Chinese. We complained to the manager but they did not apologize. This was so obnoxious. Clearly not of the service mindset and the hiring process resulted in an illiterate employee. I stopped into Kam Man Food and picked up some hot foods, snacks and groceries. The store is well-stocked, well laid out, clean and bright. The bakery has a number of delicious, classic Chinese pastries and they are fresh and delicious. The hot foods counter is fantastic, delicious, moist roast duck, chicken, goose and pork as well as char siu pork and other goodies from soups to rice dumplings. I used to go to the Kam Man in Chinatown a few times a year as a kid/teenager when my parents would take me there. I remember it being pretty pricey - more so than Brooklyn Chinese supermarkets. Understandably so, because of its prime Chinatown location. Fast forward many years til I visited this Edison location one late Saturday afternoon at around 3:30. It wasn't crowded at all, I guess because there are many Asian supermarket options in Edison. This location is much bigger and cleaner, for obvious reasons. They have a bakery (and they make fresh soy milk! Something I've had trouble finding ever since moving to NJ, Chinese BBQ, and a great selection of dried goods and produce (including some produce I had never even seen or heard of before). The meat/seafood section looks a bit questionable but my FIL (a former chef) likes to buy whole chicken here. Prices overall are on par or maybe slightly cheaper than your local HMart. I feel that 99 Ranch has a better variety of sauces, which is mainly what I was shopping for that day. While I don't think Kam Man will be my go to, it's still a good option for the area, if you don't have to go out of your way to get there. read more

BEWARE OF THIS STORE!!! Goods sold may be good at this store but, is getting your card stolen worth it? THIS SKIMMER(card copier which reads your card information and sends it to someone)WAS FOUND ON ONE OF THEIR CARD READERS!! The cashier was very suspicious about it. This supermarket is located at the Logan plaza off of route 1. The bread section: You should beware of the breads in this area because sometimes the flies come in and land on them. Just make sure you pick the breads that are not exposed and are closed properly. The bbq department: They cut up all of the roast pork, chicken, roast duck, and other meats and package them in the containers. The rest of the supermarket: The bathrooms are filthy and smells absolutely disgusting! There are flies all over the vegetables, fish, and meat area. Some times it is hard to find certain products because they keep changing the store around. The staff is not helpful or friendly here as they do not smile at all. At least the vegetables are fresh at this supermarket. Overall: I wish this place was a little more organized for customers to find certain products. The grocery store is generally good, clean with enough staff and tasty chopped up duck and prepared foods. They also carry newspapers for the older folks to purchase. The veggies are nicely bagged and washed and the fruit is plentiful. My only qualm is their fish. I even tried purchasing their live fish and it still tastes like dirt. I don't know what they are feeding the fish or where they are kept but their meat tastes like soil. I would suggest they find a different wholesaler for fish. Also, maybe for pork as well. read more

One of the OG Asian groceries in the area. I didn't go through the whole store, but it seems like they've renovated and it looks cleaner than in the past. Their lunch special is $11 for 3 choices of meat/veggies, served with rice and soup. Pretty good deal compared to a Chinese takeout order! My favorite was the fish with tofu, which had a soft texture. I also like their Chinese bakery better than the 99 Ranch bakery. Today I had the cha siu pork bun (about $2) and taro roll cake ($2.25) slice. The pork bun was still warm, filling was decent, bun soft and slightly sweet, and the browned top was slightly crisp. The taro roll cake had the light texture of a usual Asian bakery cake, not too sweet. The cream was buttercream I believe, and added a little sweetness and richness. I'll have to also commend them for the selection of ready to eat food, such as dim sum, roast duck, fresh soy milk, and fresh tofu pudding. You have to speak Chinese to them because they don't speak English, but that's not the issue here. They tell you what they want not what you want. Today, I ordered some roast pork. The guy cut too much meat so I told him I did not want that much, so that kind of annoyed him, insisted that it was not much! I had to put my foot down just to tell him I did not want that much!!! This attitude has a lot to do with the management. You never see any of them in the store!!! Oh yea, one time I saw a rat in the isle!!! Don't plan to go back for a long time. I've never been to an all Asian supermarket, and today was the day. I came to get ingredients to make lo mein like the local Chinese restaurants do. This store has a lot of different items to choose from. Many different brands. The people in the store were helpful as well. Lots of vegetables to choose from that I can't find at my regular local grocery store also. Things like Napa cabbage and yellow chives... This store was nice. Kam Man is a market that has always held a certain affection from me. As a kid, my parents would almost never go to the branch in Chinatown because they considered it too expensive compared to the smaller mom and pop markets they frequented. This gave it a certain mysterious quality that resulted in me visiting the Chinatown branch almost every time I was in Chinatown starting in my 20's. Because of that, the Chinatown branch became my mental template for most larger Chinese markets. That said, this branch of Kam Man is a different sort of store. Much like the nearby 99 or H-Mart, this store is laid out more like a traditional supermarket that just happens to sell Chinese-focused foods. When you enter there is a bakery and prepared foods section. The bakery features a wide variety of goods, including many that you do not often see outside of some of the smaller bakeries in Chinatown. To my surprise, they had items such as mochi balls filled with peanuts and melon cakes in addition to the usual roast pork and dinner buns. Move in a bit further and the prepared foods section has all sorts of pre-prepared dishes and roast meats. I found the roast pork and crispy pork at this branch more tasty than the nearby 99 market (but both are good). If you have ever been to a Chinese market, there are few surprises as you go up and down the aisles. That said, I was very happy with the selection. For instance, they did not have only one or two brands of egg noodles, but they had a few including both the fresh/refrigerated kind and the dried ones. There is also an aisle with plenty dry ingredients to make Chinese style soups. There are even two aisles dedicated to snacks! From a selection standpoint I was not disappointed. The produce looked good. Not as crispy fresh necesarily as some of the stuff you'd get on Mulberry Street or Elizabeth in Chinatown, but good enough to keep for a day or two in your fridge. Overall I enjoyed my visit to Kam Man and I was very happy to find a branch of this chain relatively close to me in New Jersey. If you are looking for Chinese ingredients for your next meal, this is a worthwhile stop. read more

The Taiwanese street food, hot deli by pound or box, Chinese BBQ, and bakery. The Taiwanese street food has noodle, rice, and specialty. The food included fried pork rice, braise pork rice, pork intestine noodle, squid soup, braised pork bun. This cuisine are seen at the street of Taiwan. They have many other type and please check them out. We have ordered the pork intestine noodle and squid soup. The squid soup is good but the intestines need some work. I prefer it braised compared to broil. The BBQ segment includes the roast duck and chicken, crispy pork, BBQ pork and other selection. We did not any of those but they look good. The hot deli segment includes many Chinese home cooking cuisine. It includes the pig blood, tofu, beef shank. They have one kind water steam and pan fried bun. It is very good. I have one of those. The bakery segment have some good fruit fill cake. The cake sell by slice or round whole cake. I would said it is good to have the choice in the deli segment. read more

I used to think H Mart was there best. I came here after a haircut and was shocked at the improvements they've done from many many moons ago. It's cleaner, no smells and their quality of food is so much better. I tried a couple of their yummies and it was fresh and delicious. Unbeknownst to me, my kid went there and also tried their bakery selection and said it was also really good. As I perusing the aisles, as always I'm checking on their shelf date. Shockingly most goods are not past its expirations. I'm a stickler for that because I've gotten sick a couple times do now I'm like a watch dog. They also carry Asian cosmetics and dishes and kitchenware. I was very happy to see the fruits and vegetables looked fresh so I bought them to make soup for medical reasons. This is an Asian grocery that has an excellent roasted meat and bakery. The roast pig and the roast pork are excellent here, better than other local places. The chicken and duck are also very good. They have a nice selection of baked goods. We picked up a chestnut filling whip cream topping cake. Beautifully designed and delicious. Asian style cakes tend to be less sweet. I remember when Kam Man was just about the only game in town if you had to stock up on Asian groceries.... Then came small Hong Kong Seafood's which begat Large HK Seafood's then H Mart,Asian and recently 99 Ranch and even more recently Super Fresh.....and all the while Kam Man deteriorated into a run down, poorly maintained and all too fragrant venue for overaged vegetables, elderly frozen meats, fish and out of date canned goods.....It wasn't pretty. But Kam Man is back.....In a way. My first visit since Kam Man's remodel and I was pleasantly surprised by the transformation, clean, organized with a comprehensive food counter featuring all your Chinese favorites as well as a large selection of pastries and buns {the flaky and savory curry bun is my favorite} wider aisles that are not only fronted and faced but also priced correctly {how many of us remember the cashiers constantly shouting in Cantonese for a price check in the early days?}. The refrigerated sections hold everything from Vietnamese coffee cordials to Japanese Mochi in a cool Sake flavored green tea and not a leak in sight. The wet market is less aromatic these days and while live frogs was a featured protein that week the selection of meats and fish is limited and rather pricy for my taste. Frozen fish is reasonably priced but fresh pig's feet has reached new heights soon getting up there in price with once humbler cuts like ox tails and neck bones. The vegetable department has expanded and is displayed and priced better so there is yet another plus. Taken as a whole Kam Man has upped it's game just out of a will to survive in a now very competitive market and will continue to do well perhaps due to it's prime location on Route 1 but also because of a nagging sense of nostalgia for those of us who remembers when Kam Man was king. read more

They even briefly did delivery before they had to temporarily shut down the store due to employees contracting COVID. We've tried 99 Ranch a few times, but they kept omitting items from our orders. It's been a while ever since I came back here. I came back because I was obviously in the area. Anyone who's on Route 1 South or Old Post Road can enter the parking area without a huge issue. The parking area is a little small and tight, therefore be patient when finding a spot and park carefully. When you walk inside, you will see fresh bakery items on the left and a cafe area on the right. The BBQ area is on the right as well. The produce area is in the back left-hand corner, and the seafood area is in the back of the store as well. The shelves in this store were very well organized. Groceries included, but NOT limited to dry goods, snacks and candies, poultry items, kitchenware, frozen foods (included a limited selection of imported ice cream - nice!), powders and sauces (usually I hit up the slightly spicy powder and soy sauce sections), teas and coffees, and of course, the fruits & veggies with seafood. I always enjoy looking through the snacks and candy sections, just to see if they have anything interesting or unique. Sometimes they carry certain imported Nabisco crackers, and limited sections of Lay's chips and Doritos (some pics of those were snapped), which all looked interesting. As far as the competitiveness in pricing was concerned, it really depended on what you were buying. They also have a tiny "over the counter" medicine area (note that anything that you buy there must be paid at the register in THAT area). Believe it or not, I take a herbal medication whenever I'm suffering from colds, and THIS store carries it at a reasonable price. There's no other store that I'm aware of that carries such medication like that, therefore it's a PLUS for this store. They also have a pharmacy with more "OTC" medication in a separate suite. Anything that you buy in that suite must be paid for there, and not at the supermarket's cash register area. Regarding the produce section, some of the items there did not look very fresh. One of the items that caught my eye was the green beans. There was a sales tag on it, and when I looked closely, it didn't look very good. But I did buy something else in this section that was on sale that looked fresh, so that was good. Therefore, when you're in the produce, and you see something that's on sale, just make sure the item looks good before buying. Finally, on the weekends, this store gets REALLY CROWDED. The lines at the registers are long, and can be sluggish at times (hence the 1-star removal for my update). The aisles can be really narrow, and people with shopping carts tend to block them while socializing with others, making it almost impossible to pass through. Also, because of the narrowness, be prepared to get bumped into a few times. I personally don't care about that part, but I know some other people may do. My advice is just exercise some patience when venturing through and waiting in the lines. Overall, the store serves it's purpose, and I'll be back again whenever I'm in the area. read more

This is one of the main places I go to get groceries, the other place being Asian Food Market. Definitely prefer this place over H Mart, because you really can't get all of what you need to cook Taiwanese food at a Korean supermarket. Also, the bakery is better (bc it's cheaper and sells Chinese baked goods) and overall the items are cheaper. Their paper wrapped cakes are to die for. Super soft, fluffy, and moist. The texture is almost like Japanese cheesecake. Their fresh meat section is extensive and they sell all different cuts of meat. They also have a variety of Chinese vegetables and fruits, although sometimes they are a bit rotten. I love their hot food buffet and BBQ meats section. They have really delicious shengjianbao. As for their BBQ, make sure you tell the guy exactly which piece you want, or he'll give you the not as good pieces. Best part to me is that they sell some Taiwanese food like wa-gui and bawan. And even better, they have a little stand that sells Taiwanese food called Little Taipei. Although, more and more of their products are being stocked from China, which makes it more difficult and annoying to avoid buying products made in China. read more

For Christmas dinner my family decided to go off tangent and get a roast duck. At my mother's suggestion, I bought the duck from Kam Man and it was quite delicious. The roast duck had a really crispy skin and plenty of underlying fat. The duck meat was still moist and had plenty of duck flavor too. My only negative was that the duck really didn't have much of that moist meat. Nonetheless along with the traditional steamed white rice buns, Hoisin (Chinese BBQ sauce), and scallion; it was a great rendition of Peking Duck. While at Kam Man, I also bought several Chinese buns: Pineapple, Coconut Cream, Roast Pork, and Custard. Overall they were all just okay, ranking them (from best to worst): Roast Pork, Pineapple, Custard, and Coconut Cream. The best of the four, the Roast Pork, was just okay with a rather bland roast pork filling. The Coconut Cream was the worst with a really muted cream and rather gummy dough. I came in here and ordered a pineapple cake. Just a slice. And a black cake. When I arrived home and bit into the pineapple cake, I had realized it was old and moldy. The texture was hard and crunchy. Since it was my first time trying that cake I thought that's how it's suppose to be but I flipped it around and noticed the green and blue spots. I love this Kam Man branch a wee bit more than the one in East Hanover for a few reasons: 1) Larger selection of goods: The selection of Taiwanese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese products is larger; you have more options in brands. The canned, dry, frozen, and refrigerated foods sections were well stocked after lunch time. The frozen section seems to be larger, as is the fresh seafood area (where the fish actually swim around). As for the produce section, I believe the one in East Hanover is larger and has fresher vegetables, but this one isn't far behind in quality. 2) Nicer employees: Maybe it's because it wasn't busy or maybe they're just that nice here, but everyone at this branch seemed friendlier; everyone I spoke to--from the hot food section to the cashier and bagger--was smiling. 3) Ru-Yi Homemade Bak Kwa (pork jerky): Dude, yes! There's Singapore Bak Kwa for sale on Amazon, but if you don't want to wait weeks for it to be delivered, I'd recommend this place. They're right next to the hot food section, near the entrance. I think they only had noodles on the heating trays, but they also serve many other dishes, especially herbal chicken soups. A half pound is $8.95, but I found it worth every penny. Their Bak Kwa is tender, sweet, and has a perfect peppery kick. You could have them slice it up into smaller pieces or just slice it yourself at home. Near the cash registers are other standalone businesses, such as a separate place to buy herbs and roots and a stand outside of it selling a few beauty products and/or medicines (can't exactly remember). The bakery section is larger and even has a place where you could order boba (shoutout to the 626--bobalife!). It wasn't as well stocked, but I was lucky that fresh rousong buns were being made right in front me. They have a great selection of fish and seafood, asian fruits & vegatables, packaged take home chinese products, cookware, a small restaurant (little taipei), lottery, chinese medicine, a DVD sales place, a verizon office and a small bakery where they cook all kinds of pasteries. you know the cakes with roast beef in the center? my wife loves that crap, i think its terrible. Or a danish with a hotdog in it, or a doughnut with raw corn filling?
