Stopped by yesterday, the vegetables and fruit looked Really Good, better-even than the ones found in major grocery stores, the store looked vary neat and clean and well stocked and I found everything I was after and it wasn't packed full of people this time. I Forgot to grab a frozen dessert thingy, I'm either forgot or ran out of money :D and if you walk to the back near the burlap sacks of rice you'll their incense , a whole wall dedicated to one of India's most enduring and pleasant experiences, and walking by, you smell them, not too over powering but sensitive people may not appreciate them, but they smelled really good back there. And they have a scent for every Major Hindu- deity and they also have big brand ones that like, they have a great selection of puja items that seem to keep moving around with every visit but i find them. I wish they had more types like more brass artisan and photograph religious iconography like they used to have, and they used to give out calendars near new years, I miss them. The staff looked busy as always but I know it I needed help I just needed to ask. Patel bro. Had the absolute Best Ginger in town! I saw fresh curry leafs, a beautiful display of sunflowers oils all lined up perfectly over the produce of which gave the room a honey glow. Great Indian snacks from floor to ceiling. Prices seem comparable to other grocery stores. The crowd was busy but the team worked fast to keep the line running smoothly and several people restocked shelves. Today was a drop in only because I was in the area; however, several items caught my eye in the freezer section. We head here often for Indian groceries. The vegetables here are mostly fresh around Thursdays and Fridays. They usually have a good stock of Indian vegetables like green chilies, curry leaves, some greens, ridge gourd, snake gourd, bottle gourd, tindora, okra . There are also plenty of Frozen food from the sub-continent like parathas, desserts, samosas and staples like rice, lentils, and flour. It gets a little too cramped on weekends. read more

My parents don't come often unless they want plantains and can't find quality ones elsewhere. It's a great location though! We used to come a lot after eating at Shalimar next door. Beware if you are someone witha service dog. I have a Seeing Eye dog and went into this store on Memorial Day. Both people who were working there said we could not bring the dog in unless we put him in a cart and covered him. No matter how we explained it was the law , the gentleman who may have been the owner or manager, kept insisting that the customers would be driven away if a dog was in the store. Now I understand there is a cultural situation here, and if I were in a country where dogs were not allowed inside, I would have to honor that. But this is not the law here in Kentucky, and a place of business could indeed be legally liable not denying admittance. We popped in on a whim after grabbing lunch at Shalimar next door and I'm so glad we did! It was driving me nuts -- not to mention burning a hole in my wallet -- trying to find all of my usual go-to ingredients since moving to Louisville and still trying to make all of our family's usual meals with the things I can manage to order online or scrounge up from various markets all over the city. Some local markets make you sacrifice organization and cleanliness in the name of finding your favorite ingredients, but not Patel Brothers. Things are clean, organized, and easy to find. After discovering Patel Brothers, just about everything I need is now all in one place -- fresh produce, spices, canned goods, snacks, even frozen foods. I had been experimenting with a lot of at-home chai making but struggling to find an appropriate black loose leaf tea. A friend suggested Patel Brothers and it didn't disappoint. They have a huge variety of Indian snacks, ingredients, spices, and teas. Particularly if you're looking to buy something in bulk (say, 40 lbs of rice or 2 lbs of ground ginger), you'll get a great deal here. It's also a great place to grab some Indian desserts or other snacks. The powdered ginger we got was pungent, the milk sweets were delicious, the assam tea was flavorful They offer a small variety of non-edible things like cookware, but I was disappointed with the non-food things I bought. I got a tea strainer that probably was made of aluminum but in any event began turning brown and giving off a weird taste after the second use. It was only a couple of dollars, but I certainly expected it to survive multiple uses! Overall, however, I'd definitely come back to get more affordable Indian ingredients! read more

I can't believe that I waited until about the last year to visit Patel's Grocery in the shopping center on Hurstbourne anchored by Liquor Barn and also featuring Sola Salon (shout out to Arrow and Lindsey Couch, my stylist). Patel features an almost overwhelming selection of fresh vegetables, including hard to find items like fresh curry leaves, frozen and pre made Indian food, spices, grains, rice and much more. I buy bulk basmati rice, red quinoa, semolina flour, cumin, coriander, turmeric and much more. I can buy whole or ground spices so I can roast my curry powders before i grind them or just sprinkle them when rushed. They feature every kind of flour you can want, dozens of whole grains and rices. They sell cooking tools, utensils, servers, decorations and utensils. They have aisles of snacks and appetizers you may have never tried before. On top of all this selection, their pricing is better than competitive with most items well below chain grocery prices. If you love to cook, or save money on first rate food and pantry items, pay them a visit. And, please, bring your mask, the store is tight so let's keep them safe. read more

My dad is a chef so he has a love of authentic grocery stores that as Kelly Y put it, "aren't like the dumbed down version in the grocery store." We pop in here after visiting Shalimar (an Indian restaurant a door or two down). I enjoy cooking but I also enjoy this kind of market as well. They have everything someone who knows what they're doing would look for: authentic spices, cookware, and other ingredients for Indian food. They also have things that help serve their prayer lives and household items you'd find in India or Asia. I know that I, for one, would love to find authentic German candies and supplies. Absolutely dumb and poor customer service, experience. We called them today (Thanksgiving ) if they were open and they explicitly confirmed that they were open till 5 pm. We get there at 4:50 PM and were not let in because they close at 5 pm. How dumb is it to not just have told us that doors close at 4:45 pm? I am fascinated by Indian food. The myriad of spices involved is so mind boggling. After more than a few failed attempts at cooking Indian food, I have had to stop trying. Imagine my joy when I find a huge selection of authentic frozen or fresh Indian food at Patel Brothers! Naan, curries and Indian sweets...etc! They are not like the dumbed down versions at the "international" section of your regular grocery stores. And for that ounce of ambition I have left for cooking Indian food, there are countless pre-mixed spice packets at Patel Brothers! No more buying a bunch of spices I don't ever use up or messing up the measurements! And if you ever just want to stock up on basics like whole peppercorns, cinnamon sticks or whole cloves, you can get them here for much cheaper and fresher than regular grocery stores. read more

This is a really nice specialty store. Brown basmati is the go-to rice in our household, so we like going to Indian groceries to get large bags. They have a great selection of rices to chose from. I also like to get the prepared boil-in-bag meals for easy lunches or dinners when I don't feel like cooking. I will say those are kind of spread out across aisles so it can be a little confusing, in that regard. They also have a good selection of spices and other dry goods like lentils. Lately I've been dropping in to get flatbreads from the refrigerated section at the front of the store. There's a flavored paratha I really like. And of course they have naan, chapati, and roti, too. I don't get out here very often but when I do it's for something specific that I know they will have. On my recent visit I was in the market for some dragonfruit. Of course, as expected, they had some. I bought 3 for $15. Hey, when you want fresh (or at least slightly fresh) produce that is usually grown in places on the other side of the world, and that the majority of people in your area have never had and lots can't even describe...you pay the price. Soooo I feel like I have been missing out on some amazing Indian foods because I did not know this existed!! I went to Office Depot for a ream of paper and spotted this on my way in. After my order I walked over to the store and was met with wall to wall spices, fresh vegetables, treats, canned sauces and a WALL of vegetarian frozen entrees! I'm just now getting into Indian cuisine but have always loved naan and chana masala. Typically you pay 3.00 for 2 pieces of naan and 5.99 for a jar of stir sauce while here you get FIVE naan for 1.99 and a 16oz jar of sauce for 1.99!!!! Are you kidding me?!?! I feel like I'm in heaven! The walls are lined from floor to ceiling with fresh herbs and roots, flours, mixes, ready to eat foods, condiments and spice blends or sauces and they are a bit narrow so if someone is off to the right they are still kind of in the middle of the aisle. I know I looked completely out of place as the ONLY Caucasian just staring and taking pictures of all the amazing finds but I didn't care! I will definitely be back with a grocery list next time to find all of those mysterious spice blends I usually pay an arm and leg for at other grocery stores!! read more

Trying to grow as a cook and as a healthy eater led me inexorably to Patel Bros. The only surprise is how long it took me to arrive after I learned of it. It began with curries. I finally had time and inclination to learn to do my own. Recommendations I'd gotten several years earlier came to mind when I found a recipe for a Sprouted Coconut Chori curry (subji) that I wanted to try. I needed an outlet that sold curry pastes and related spices & oils. The meal I prepared from my first Patel Bros trip was a breakthrough for me. And, once I was *in* I noticed that Patel spices are whole and, almost a steal compared to Kroger. I mean, really, a steal. In some cases, the cost differential between Kroger and Patel spices was as high as 5:1. In other cases, Kroger didn't carry the product at all (for example, whole garam masala mix for fresh grinding). And, we're talking bags of the real thing, not tiny allotments crowded into jars. From that initial recipe, I began to learn more about soaking, sprouting, and fermenting to increase available nutrients, as well as to limit toxins in grains, seeds, and legumes. As my research blossomed, I knew where to find my ingredients. I began to make regular trips for bags of mustard seeds (I'm now making homemade mustard), sesame seeds (I'm now properly soaking and toasting my own seeds), chori (red beans for sprouting); and the greatest thing ever, large bags of chickpea flour (besan). Discovering the many uses of besan has inspired me to take baking seriously. If you're a newbie at Indian cuisine or the possibilities of a good deal at an Indian grocery, let me reassure you Patel Bros is a safe bet. I can offer only a few caveats: 1. Some flours lack expiration dates and I skip bags that lack, even if I wanted that particular flour (sorghum, I'm looking right at you). Note: Other bags are well marked with Patel-branded expiration stickers. I haven't tried to engage staff about it, or to receive any assurances they might offer. 2. Some oils are also not marked. But, I only purchase mustard oil here (it's loaded with Omega-3). I have reasonable faith that Patel moves a lot of it. Once again, I chose not to engage staff about it. 3. I've purchased some produce items, notably coconuts, which were reasonably priced. For other purchases, such as jackfruit, I don't have a point of reference; I've only seen it at one other market in Louisville. If it looks good and I want it, I get it, and I've never had a shocking tally at the Patel register. My interactions with Patel Bros staff have been few and far between. The few I've had were acceptable, if not overly warm. I sense more reticence from staff than I do brusqueness (it's 2016 in America so an empathetic attitude is helpful if you want to be a good neighbor). I've tried to wing it as a matter of principle. This is quite frankly the best organized ethnic grocery store that I've ever been in (and I lived in LA). As the other reviewers have noted, this is not truly an international grocer but an Indian grocer. However, this does not mean you can't find ingredients that you would want to use in other types of cuisine. For example, green papaya which is made into salads in Thai cuisine is available as is Jackfruit another southeast asian favorite. This store has a wealth of dry goods ranging from an insane selection of rice in bags ranging from 6 to 20 lbs, to grains, to the herbs and spices that are essential for Indian cuisine (tumeric, coriander, cumin, etc.) sold in bulk for cheap. If you're lazy or worried about your first foray into Indian cooking, don't worry because they have both ready to eat meals as well as packets containing the spice mixture and oil needed for each dish. Just add your protein and a little bit of cream (in some dishes) and you're good. For the truly lazy or incompetent they also have frozen meals. It's actually shocking how large the place is but there was a line at the register and the thing seemed to be doing brisk business so I guess they're here to stay. That's a good thing for me as I plan to be going back often. Verdict: Rather than trying to be everything (all nationalities) Patel Brothers focuses on a core competency of Indian food and offers everything you could want to make excellent meals. read more

I had no idea how extensive the reach of Patel Brothers was until this afternoon. After googling "Indian market," a number of small groceries popped up. But then on the map of my mighty iPhone map appeared, "Patel Brothers... 15 min." OH SNAP. I loved Patel Brothers in New York. And they even have one in Jackson, MS. So of course they have one in Louisville! Silly me! (They don't even have one in St. Louis!) This location is a little hard to pinpoint. It has a very small storefront inside a large strip mall, but to identify the proper one, there's a Chinese buffet, and it's behind a Mongolian BBQ place. There's also a big shoe place. Patel Bros is in the far right corner. However, the modest storefront is deceiving. While not massive, it is larger than it appears. It's pretty comprehensive, with a solid selection of produce, frozen and refrigerated foods, grains, spices, packaged items, toiletry items, and kitchen tools/supplies. You can even get small hookah/pipes, and even tubes of pre-mixed henna if you want to draw your own. The most important lesson? Ladies' fingers are another name for okra. read more

Stopped by to check out this 'international grocery'. Great vegetable options, I was able to get ALL the veggie ingredients for my Filipino dish. I went aisle to aisle to see what else they have that 'international' , disappointed that all they have are Indian stuff, and some sriracha sauce. Even noodles i am not familiar with. Their title is somewhat misleading "International Market " - as the store mostly sells Indian-Paki items. So dont expect to find all kind of international things here - but yes you can find a lot of variety of Indian spices, mixes, snacks here. Price is good. I was so glad that Patel Brothers finally opened a store here in Louisville! I used to have to drive to Chicago to get Indian ingredients. There had been several other Indian markets here over the years but they never were around very long. Prices on common spices like nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon are a fraction of the cost of Kroger, Meijer's, etc and are much fresher and prices on spices for Indian cooking are also not bad. Prices are usually below other grocery stores on fresh vegetables too. The store is large and well stocked with almost anything you will need in the way of grocery and utensils to cook up some delicious Indian food. read more

You know when sometimes while grocery shopping, you pick up something just for that awesome sale/price? And then you get to the register and the price isn't what you thought it was? And then, the helpful cashier either honors it anyway or gently points out your mistake? Yeah, that's not this place. After rudely saying no, she sends the bagger to check and he just picks the sign and moves it to the right spot. STILL no acknowledgment of a mistake or we're sorry. And they had insects hovering over some of their produce. Eck! Just ate the fruit I got from there too. Hands down the worst peaches I've had this season. But they're organized, and have variety, so can't say I hated them. read more

When pulling up to the store, it looks as if this is going to be a very small place, but once you are inside you see that that is not so. They have a variety of products, including fruits and vegetables, all kinds of beans and lentils, snacks and candies, a frozen section, some household/kitchen items, and much more. It really seems to be a hit place, because while I was there many people came and went. Chances are, you need to get your hands on some asafeotida or some exotic turmeric root. Don't worry, Patel Bros. got you. Need some jalapenos for poppers? Maybe some jack-fruit? Hey. Patel Bros. They got you. As soon as you step in, do not be overwhelmed by the pungent smell of culture that wafts freely in the place. Over the speakers, you'll get some decent Bollywood music... or some nostalgic 90s music; it's generally good nonetheless for your shopping experience. Directly upon entering, you've got the gem of produce straight ahead. A few aisles over you've got sauces, pickles, snacks, dry goods, grains, and even imported Indian shampoos/soaps. All this, for your experimenting/enjoying. If you've got questions, the friendly staff will absolutely help you find that jaggery, or those bags of mung beans. There is simply a lot of stuff to discover, and you'll probably take a few trips to see it all. Don't be ashamed to just go in and get what you need though. Here's a few things to know, that might just help in your endeavors. 1. The produce is generally on point. Stuff like spinach, cilantro, ginger, green chili, and the such will be a huge savings in comparison to other Asian markets and grocers. Go mid-week for the freshest stuff. 2. Traffic. Another Patel Bros. pro-tip is to visit during the week, preferably during the day. If you must wander in on a Saturday or Sunday, be prepared for some lines as a lot of folks do their shopping on these days. It's like any other place, but they aren't really staffed for a large crowd, so you may get stuck behind 4-5 families with stuffed carts. Not good when all you wanna get is a small bottle of mango juice. Keep these things in mind, and go bravely into a veritable wild ecosystem of cultural goodies. I used to go to a Patel Brothers in Chicago so I was thrilled to bits when I discovered there was one in this city to cater to my Indian culinary needs. This store has a great selection of vegetables, Indian breads, sweets, snacks, spices, frozen curries and other Indian dishes, and so much more.
