The prepared foods are no good and spoil quickly. One cannot return or exchange it, even with a receipt. The customer service and management are poor. It is not a welcoming place. The store is old and has outdated checkout lanes. The rewards card only works for very few products and merchandise. I spend anywhere between $300 and $400 here on a monthly basis. I was just verbally accosted by, I assume, some sort of manager and told that I wasn't allowed to have my bag in the store. I understand their reasoning is to help reduce shrink, but...again, I have been buying exclusively from here as it is convenient for my comings and goings. The man literally told me that I am not allowed back. I carry valuables in my bag (out of necessity) and it doesn't leave my sight. Plus, every cashier in the place knows my face as a loyal PAYING customer, not someone who shoplifts. Does every woman who walks in the door leave their purse up front? Parents with small children and baby bags? This is on top of my previously witnessing produce guys putting their hands down their pants then continuing to stock product w/o washing their hands. (I'm not kidding.) At this point, I'm hoping the rumors of Publix bulldozing the place are true. The behavior displayed by the staff during this incident is typical of the Highlands, generally rude. I'm not a local schizophrenic wandering in off the streets looking for a quick grab and I won't be treated as such. I'm all for local. All for helping the little guy out; however, Kroger here I come. It's just bad business. There really isn't much else to say. I lived in the neighborhood for ten years and so thankful I left. I certainly hope there no Derby visitors were treated this way over the weekend. read more

ValuMarket is much like the Highlands, the neighborhood it calls its home. It's all about buying local, has character and is a bit rough around the edges at times. More than anything, it's lovable. Yes, I called a grocery store lovable. I've been a mostly frequent shopper for seven years or so. I especially love shopping at ValuMarket for its selection of cheese, beer, readymade deli items and Kentucky-made goods, including Lotsa Pasta, Bernoulli's Ice Cream, Spudz Chips, Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese, Ale 8 One, Nord's Bakery and Kizito Cookies. ValuMarket's produce is limited but enough to likely have what you need. It's somewhat lacking on beauty and hygiene products, but luckily, there is a Walgreen's down the street. It also has a large organic and health-focused section. (Yep, it knows well its neighborhood and what its residents might be in search of.) And I smile everytime I hear the announcement coming across the loudspeakers of the owner or manager welcoming everyone to Valumarket and reminding us of their deals. It feels quaint and small-town. Through the pandemic, it seems that ValuMarket has also been taking the needed precautions. There is signage requiring guests to wear masks. All of the staff wear masks, and there are plexiglass dividers at the registers. ValuMarket also has its Curbside Direct service and delivery within 3 miles of the a ValuMarket. ValuMarket is the neighborhood grocery store most neighborhoods would be lucky to have. read more

Locals in the neighborhood can walk, bike, or stop on their way home and find an excellent selection of fresh fruit and veggies, and a little less impressive selection of other food items, though I not sure what they don't have that you might need. It's clean and well lit with a deli counter, fresh breads and pastries (assuming cuz I didn't actually get any). Store staff are friendly and helpful. I enjoyed a less corporate experience. Parking is a non-issue because it is located in a small mall that has large lots front and back. Worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood or passing by and you have the time, even if you don't need anything in particular. read more

Oh, Valu Market. I think every longtime Louisvillian has a story or two about this place. It's always had a great beer cave as an ace in the hole, and it's often useful for finding niche/uncommon items - canned Donald Duck OJ, Jack's taco pizza, Post Waffle Crisp, things like that. It also has higher prices on average than Kroger or Meijer, as well as a, shall we say... "lived-in" feel that isn't for everybody, especially if you aren't a dyed-in-the-wool Highlander. Over the years, customer service could range wildly from visit to visit as well, although that's the Bardstown Road norm. Much like the Highlands itself, Valu Market has made some real strides to improve lately. The beer selection has only become more robust with time, good sales are more frequent and they really have a solid staff right now. Most recently, I had a cashier with a delightful attitude and a voice that's a dead ringer for Holly Hunter - anywhere would be lucky to have her! Prices can still be steep on some items and the selection (especially non-food items like medicine, paper goods, etc.) could stand to improve. But all things considered, I'm glad to live near Valu Market and it serves its purpose as a convenient neighborhood grocery store. read more

I'm giving this store 5 stars, not because it is the most razzle dazzle, huge selection, corporate branded, and decorated store. I am giving it 5 stars because it reminds me of grocery shopping with my parents, when I was a child, before we had huge mega-corporate chains. What others may say this store lacks, gives the store charm to me. It feels local. It feels less formal and it feels like there is less pressure to spend money you didn't plan on spending. The staff and employees greet you, and not just someone at the door. You can also get local products like Garden Girl Foods and Kizito's Cookies. Yes, the prices are a bit higher, but supporting a local business may cost more. I think more people should frequent this local gen. read more

It's been a great place for me to grab a drink after rehearsal, or to smuggle drinks/snacks into the Baxter Avenue Theatre. For the highlands, it does have a nice parking lot, but since it is in a popular area with tons of other businesses, it can get congested real quick. Valu Market isn't my grocery place, but that is mainly because of location. I'd probably prefer here over Kroger though if I did live around here, since their parking makes me feel much less anxious. read more

I continuously have negative experiences here. Been coming here for 20 years and I've never seen this place in such bad shape. Between the ridiculous prices and rude employees, I won't be back. The lady working the self check out was incredibly rude and unhelpful. This isn't my first time dealing with her either. Not only does none of the self checkouts ever work, but you have to deal with rude workers on top of it. What happened to this place? I went in to buy one item and after trying to pay FOUR times, I simply gave up. None of the card readers work and the self checkouts are unusable. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

This is a decent grocery store and they have good sales here. They don't have the widest selection here but they do have a strong LOCAL selection here which increases their stock in my opinion. Their beer selection, while lacking what I like, is really pretty good. I have specific beer wants and needs but if you're a normal person you'll have a good experience. When you can find the staff they're helpful and usually already doing their jobs. I really, really like that I can get help without being made to feel like a pain in the neck. The store is organized in a way that is confusing to me so it takes me a while to get oriented. Strange side note, for some reason when I go there people think I work there and ask me for help. The errors on produce on their self scanning checkout lines are so numerous and so frequent, that it needs to asked whether this is a deliberate attempt to overcharge customers. I have been using my ValuMarket for over 6 years, and in the last 3 months I have encountered dozens of produce pricing errors. Some of these were repeated on successive days, indicating that errors are not being corrected. All of the errors are overcharges... I never see an error in the customers favor. read more

Wow. Not sure what happened but pretty sure I won't go back any time soon. I needed to head into town to drop something off to someone and thought I'd hit the grocery while there. First off, I called to see if they had something in stock and was told to call back in about 20 minutes b/c the person couldn't go to check for me. So I called back and someone picked up the phone and immediately hung up. I called again and a young-ish African American woman answered and I told her I was checking to see if something was in stock. She asked what, I told her I was looking for basil and mung bean sprouts. She then hung up on me. Why? Were those code words for something nefarious or does she not know what basil is or what? I wanted to go there to pick up these items and a few craft beers and needed to know if I should stop somewhere else or if they would have everything I needed. (I resolve to never complain about the other major grocery because they actually will look for you and thus save you a trip if they dont have it.) I explained to the first person that I live 30 minutes away and would like to save the gas (and time) if they dont have what I need! First, if I'm willing to drive 30 minutes to get to your store, isn't that a good testament for your store? Second, wth happened to customer service?? And third, arent we all supposed to be doing our part to save the planet (reducing carbon footprint)? Thus, if I'm going to be near an area, why not bundle the trip?! I called back, phone wasn't answered so I used my other phone. A middle aged caucasian guy answered, I told him I was hung up on twice. He apologized for whomever the person was and asked what I was looking for and answered my question. Thank you. [Why am I describing the people that answered? I am still surprised when I find that this grocery store has that forgotten odd ball ingredient I'm missing. I think their produce, deli, dairy sections are all really great. Plus the beer cage is always a plus. I still choose not to get my meat/seafood from here, I just don't think the quality is as good as Kroger or a butcher. This local grocer has a good selection of health foods section and protein substitutes found in it's own section of the store. Plus they have a member reward program like Kroger. ValuMarket is a treasure for sure. It's not a big box store but always has a great assortment of quality and fresh produce that just makes you feel good. The store is always clean and has a great deli. What's more, the variety of most anything is there, not just shelf after shelf of various sizes of a few brands. I love ValuMarket! I truly cannot believe I had never checked in to this location before my last trip this past week, or that I haven't reviewed it.. I live in the Highlands, so the ValuMarket location in Mid City Mall is very convenient for me. That's one of the main reasons I shop there. However, the real reason to check out ValuMarket is because it truly is an awesome grocery. It's convenient for almost everyone, because they have locations all over Louisville. Plus, they carry everything you could find at any other supermarket, along with tons of local Kentucky Proud products. That's one of my favorite parts of this store! You can find so many amazing Kentucky cheeses, meats, sauces, eggs, milk, yogurt, snacks, and other items. Not to mention, ValuMarket is a Louisville operation! It's local in and of itself! Then, there's the craft beer selection. ValuMarket has the best beer cave of any grocery in the city! I can always find great selections there, including items I can't find anywhere else. If you're entertaining, or just looking for something nice to drink yourself, ValuMarket is the place you need to check out. Plus, they have an awesome hot bar, tons of desserts, and a really great olive bar. So, it's also great for picking up items for hosting a party. Or even attending a party.. I never like to show up empty-handed, so stopping by ValuMarket makes grabbing a nice local item for your host a breeze. Also, you can get an Xtra Valu Rewards Card (similar to a Kroger card, which most people are familiar with). When you use the card you can get discounts, and you'll earn points on most of the groceries you buy. You'll also earn 1 point for every 10 cents you spend in ValuMarket. The points can be redeemed for everything from free items, to reductions of your total at checkout, to store gift cards. The service has been good, but I've realized something the more I go to Valu Market.... There is no such thing as a quick visit. Valu Market is a great back up for me when I don't want to fight the traffic and parking of larger stores. The store is clean and the employees are friendly. The produce is very good and Valu Market has a wide variety of fruits and veggies. The store has an excellent meat department with butchers that will make suggestions and provide special cuts upon request. We even had a butcher call another store when the Bardstown Road store did not have the exact grade of brisket my chef son wanted to buy. That is service above and beyond. You'll spend more money on groceries at ValuMarket than you would at Kroger or Meijer, but there are two things ValuMarket offers that makes the higher prices worth it if you, like me, absolutely hate grocery shopping: 1) Curbside Direct For less than $6, you can order all of your groceries online, and they will do all of the shopping for you. Then you show up at a time you choose, and they bring you all of your groceries bagged and in a cart. No lines, no wandering up and down isles, just groceries and go. 2) Delivery Okay, just when you thought that someone doing your shopping for you was awesome, just wait until they do the shopping AND bring your groceries to your doorstep. This service is a little more expensive (around $12 within a certain distance of the store), but it's invaluable when you're having a busy week and just can't get to the grocery. It's certainly less expensive than ordering pizza every night because you have nothing in the house to cook. read more

One of the best Beer Caves in the city with a diverse selection of great imports (especially Belgian Ales) and American Craft Beer. They also have a cool draft beer system for filling and refilling Growlers (1/2 gallon jugs of fresh draft beer). Most of the taps feature locally brewed beers and regional favorites. Oh sweet Valu Market. I actually had never stepped into this establishment until a little more than a year ago when me and my boyfriend got together. I've been missing out my whole life! Their selection of local cheese, beer and great produce has me coming back week after week. Walking into the door you see their pretty vast (for the size of the entire store, anyway) produce selection. They have most everything I've needed vegetable/fruit wise when I was looking for ingredients, ranging from acorn squash to portabella mushrooms to rutabagas. When you move past all of that delish then you're faced with the deli, bakery and of course that huge island or cheeses. Who doesn't love a good cheese? They've got it all. If you've ever watched Food Network and they say you need a good gruyere, cheddar, white cheddar (my personal favorite), asiago, gouda, munster, and many more will be sitting there waiting for you to nosh it down. They have quite a few selections of great deli items, their bakery section always has quite a few breads, cakes, cupcakes and even single-serve slices that are good for when you're having a "fat day." As you move through the dairy section you see your typical milk, name and off-brand cheeses, to yogurt and then you STOP! Here's where we get into the good stuff, beer. You have beer on tap right by the back room doors. You can purchase a growler here and fill up to your heart's content. If you can move past that and make it into the beer cave, then you'll find one great selection of craft beer, domestics and imports as well. You can get just about anything you like ranging from classics like PBR to rocker bottles that after drinking just one will have your head spinning. (Abita Andygator being a very dangerous selection) They also have several selections of Samuel Adams Barrel Room Selection, Stone beer (Arrogant Bastard, Double Bastard, Reunion IPA 2.0) and several other brews. If you go back outside (which I know is hard to do) you will find several brands and empty six pack boxes where you can create your own and a bin with price-is-as-marked beers. Over near the frozen section they have some more beers, namely this is where they stock their beers from The New Albanian Brewing Company. So you've got your beer and you're moving to the meat section. Which honestly is a little disappointing because it can seem very lacking, however you can find some steals if you look. For example: if you're on a budget (or have a big family who loves chicken) they usually have 10 pound bags of HUGE leg quarters for cheap! Their fish selection is decent, they have different grades of hamburger and a few cuts of steak, and finally the pork they have varies week to week depending on what they get in stock. A pretty big temporary con is that there is construction currently going on inside Mid-City Mall so it makes it kind of a pain to access as you have to walk through a creepy tunnel to get in and out plus driving is a hinderance because so much of it is blocked if you take the back way by Baxter Theater and The Backdoor to get on Grinstead. The other thing is if there is something going on at the comedy club next door or during the weekend parking can be hard to find due to its primetime location on Bardstown Road. I love how active Valu Market is in the community and if you're in there for any period of time you're likely to hear their commercial of how they shop local and support local. I'd still much rather be here than when I have to make my way to Wal-Mart or Target to get something that they don't have. I'm a fan for sure, but there are improvements that can be made so it merits a 4 Star review instead of 5 for that reason. read more

This is not your average grocery store. The middle section is full of all the staples you'd expect at the average grocery store, but the produce and beer make it feel like one of those fancy hippy/hipster grocery stores. The produce is above average with lots of good, fresh looking items, plus a decent collection of organics. There's a selection of beer growler taps, which is already one step up from the preponderance of grocery stores. Then add a craft beer selection and walk-in beer cooler to rival that of a good package store and I'm floored. If this was closer to home, I'd have trouble shopping anywhere else. read more

What is the point in having a rewards card if you cannot use them? I was at valu market this morning and there were no cashiers in the checkout lanes and only uscan was open. When I asked the attendant about using my card, he said it did not work at U scan and offered no other help. How am I saving money by shopping at a store that doesn't allow me to use the card they issue just for that purpose. I go to this location because it's a couple of minutes from my home. Having lived right across the street from this place I often found myself wandering in on warm summer nights because it was closer than Kroger and I didn't feel like driving or riding my bike. So many random misadventures in here, and so many colorful characters help you to forget the fact the prices are 10%-20% higher than average, but hey, you're in the dead center of the Highlands with hipsters, yuppies, hippies and broke college kids livin' the dream with their student loans (like me!) and pretentiousness comes at a price. The staff reminds me of extras for a Clerks movie, which is awesome, because I can totally relate to other mildly disgruntled 20-somethings slaving for minimum wage. Their beer-cave is epic and my personal drunken heaven. Every time I walk in I pretend I am a viking traversing the frozen tundra of the north in search of the great beer hall of Valhalla, and I am never disappointed. I love Valu Market, but I love it for different reasons than my one-stop shop for groceries. I was going to review Valu Market a long time ago but I put it off. There was a time(3 or more years ago) where every time I went in here that it smelled like pet pee! I'm happy to report that they've fixed that issue! I used to frequent Valu Market two or three times a week. Valu Market is 0.2 miles away which makes it the best spot when I need something in a hurry. Oh, forget that spice? I'll be right back. For Valu Market, I'm going to give you a fast Valu-review by listing the pros and cons. Pros: -- They have a USPS station up front if you need to ship a package. -- Meat section is safe with great prices. There are a few discount grocery stores where the meat section is scary(I won't name stores) -- Beer - Lots to choose from. You can build your own 6-pack. They also have a beer cave and growler fills. My only issue is that it seems that the price between beer cave and store room temp beer is the same. Usually there's a small to slight price difference elsewhere. -- They have a store card although I'm not sure what it's for yet(aside from small discounts on food items). -- Self checkout which is a plus everywhere! -- Some store brand things are good. Some items will have you wishing you chose the name brand version. This is another thing I've been called crazy for. Sometimes name brand products are necessary. Not always, but sometimes. -- Instead of being in one or two places, local items are spread across the store. -- This location is in Mid-City Mall. If you're inclined, you can catch a movie, pick up a book from the library, and get your grocery shopping done! Oh, there's a bar called the Backdoor too that will gladly give you cheap beer. Cons: -- Produce - I'm sure it's fine. The veggies normally look good, but the fruit is another story. I scope it out every time, but it never looks tasty. I have purchased fruit from them on occasion, but it never satisfies. -- You can buy your essentials here, but some of their product options are slim. I can never seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. -- Some might say parking, but I'm not one to need the first three spots on the first 10 rows closest to the entrance. When I'm not walking there, I've never had an issue. -- Depending on the time of day, customer service can be lacking. The employees aren't rude or anything. Sometimes they can be absent. -- The prices. Some things can be priced a little higher than major grocers. That's to be expected with a local business, but there are items here where the price doesn't make sense. Valu Market is a good last minute place for when I need something fast. I encourage you to go. They might have everything you need and it'll turn into your favorite store. read more

Excellent neighborhood grocery store. I buy all my groceries here, and have been known to stop by on my way to my local watering hole to grab a snack for all those delicious microbrews to land on. ValuMarket has a wide selection of cheeses, an olive bar, lots of organic and home-grown veggies, a large natural/health foods section, and a wonderful beer cave. You can also fill growlers from taps in the store. They even offer a shop online and grocery delivery service. I would put ValuMarket more in the category of Whole Foods than Kroger. It's not a huge place, but they have a great variety for the space. Excellent deli options as well, and they are open from 7am to midnight. read more

ValuMarket in the Highlands is a good stop if you're in a pinch for common, non-specialty grocery items. Things I love about VM: 1) cheese selection FTW. They have a decent selection. 2) they carry JD's milk, Stone Cross Farm meats, & local eggs (big win!) 3) they stock Blue Dog bread 4) beer selection and ability to refill growlers 5) the people that work there are the best!! I just want to give big hugs all the time there. Things that could improve: First of all, get that "Clearly Organic" brand out of there as soon as humanly possible. I have had problems with this brand on multiple occasions. It has unexpected ingredients in so many products, it's scary. I've had to return a couple of items due to taste, also. Their beer selection (including walk-in cooler) is surprising, and they have the growler area where you can get a fresh-off-the-tap jog of hand-crafted and local brews. I don't find this particular location to always be the most presentable or cleanest, due to its location in the aging Mid-City Mall, but the staff is always quite helpful. As a "Highlander" I love the location of the Valu Market but sometimes the parking at Mid City Mall can be challenging. Still, it is nice to have a place central in the neighborhood to grab some decent produce and awesome craft beer. Pros: Amazing craft beer selection. A big beer cave and a nice draft selection to fill up your growler. You can also purchase a growler there. Lots of different cheeses. Huge wheels of cheese and little bites to taste- from all around the world. Yum! Fresh produce for a reasonable price. Cons: Parking can suck It doesn't feel very clean Not a great meat selection and it can be pricey. Overall, I have a good experience at Valu Market. Just a quick in and out trip to grab a few things and it's perfect. I would not do my full weekly shopping there though. read more
