jerk chicken, izakaya shrimp pasta, popcorn shrimp fried rice
    Kayley W.

I love Caribbean and Chinese food so I was really excited to try this spot. On their menu they have a few different plates (that our server recommended sharing family-style), and platter options (set menus made for groups or for two). We decided to go family style because there were specific items we've seen online that we wanted to try! Also just a heads up, the portions aren't that big. What we ordered: Izakaya shrimp pasta: Very garlicky and creamy! Had a great flavour and it was very unique as it was made with ramen noodles. Would definitely be too heavy if I were to finish all of it by myself, the few bites I had were enough for me! Popcorn shrimp fried rice: Was very excited to try this one and it had a really rich umami flavour. The tobiko eggs added a nice crunch and sweetness. A tag bit oily but that is to be expected sometimes with fried rice. Half-portion of jerk chicken: Tasted pretty standard but it was quite juicy. I liked the pickles it came with!

Fabulous place with a creative twist on Asian Carribean food! Small restaurant with a nice, eclectic vibe. Really cool staff and delicious food. It's a bit pricy but worthwhile. (Not so much the drinks). Highly recommend the 3 patties, and the pineapple bun burger. The combination of the salty smash burger patties and the sweet flaky pineapple bun is to die for. Frozen patties are available for purchase next door too!

Over priced mediocre food not even worth the value small portion size. Got the 2 person platter. 2 started good items Brussel sprouts good the calamari with aloi. The rest not worth it for 99$. Cabbage coleslaw , peas and rice, crushed marinated cucumber very spicy. Cornbread not bad not super exciting crispy crumbly exterior herb butter decent. Chicken was small got a leg and a breast very small pickles in a paper sauce thing they give out at McDonald's for condiments. For 100$ I didn't even get steak, lobster or shrimp. + Up charge 10$ for oxtail. I could have similar food at a Caribbean resto take out and not have to pay half this price. Tables were very small, very noisy blasting music to a point where I have to shout across the small table to hear your friend. Could not even hear what th host said the items were that came to the table. Washrooms narrow downstairs and very narrow washroom stalls. Floors were wet as sink was super tiny. Decorations semi decent. Nice bar table in the front. Servers were okay no issues. Not worth the price save your money go else where. Don't understand the hype. Full on Friday evening. I don't see the fusion on the foods Jamaican-Asian not really there it's one or the other. It's a miss for me.

I can't lie. The customer service here was really nice. And I did like the restaurant outlay itself. I wouldn't say there's much of an ambiance there, but it's definitely a Vibe and can make you feel comfortable. But I must say the food was very mediocre. I'm happy I went here during summerlicious because of I spent full price for the food that I ate I would have left. Very upset. I would not recommend this place nor will I be going back.

my first time trying Jamaican chinese food. and patties! It kind of reminds me of an empanada! really yummy and the dough was soft and bready ~ fillings were great too and loved the dipping sauces we also got jerk chicken chow mein! super cool fusion food! lowkey idk what jerk chicken is supposed to taste like so idk if im credible but I enjoyed the food for dessert we finished w a hk style French toast! One of my favorite things to eat in hk and I was surprised to see it offered here. the bread was layered with a cookie spread and it was so sweet and indulgent. just a bit heavy on the sauce so I think if I were to do it again, I'd ask for less the place is super vibey and has a specific charm to it! it feels hipster but in a good way? feel like it's casual but also can be elevated for special occasions! service was stellar!! our waitress was really friendly and nice and conversational! overall, I think this was a great introduction to Chinese Jamaican food bc it was very much satisfying :)

Came to Patois for Winterlicious. It was a restaurant I've wanted to try for some time. The inside is nice, great vibes, nice music, extremely friendly staff. I have to say I was disappointed with the food. The beef patties which were short ribs with oxtail gravy was quite bland and well dried inside. I wished there was more gravy or at least gravy to maybe dip it in. The pastry itself was nice. It was served with a garlic sauces which I found very weird as an accompaniment. I ordered the Fried Chicken with Mac and cheese and coleslaw. The chicken, the coating itself had a nice crunch but the chicken was just bland. I got a side of their house hot sauce to help. The hot sauce was nice, very spicy but really there was nothing saving the chicken. The coleslaw wasn't great and well the Mac and cheese was just ok. Overall I found the found just not spiced the way I would have thought it would be for a Chinese/Jamaican place. The dessert was delicious. I got the grilled pineapple ice cream. Overall, the food was ok. I would come back to try the other dishes, but I left hungry and went home and had a sandwich.

Went to Patois for dinner and enjoyed the unique Asian-Caribbean fusion food. My friend and I ordered the oxtail mac and cheese with kimchi and the jerk chicken chow mein. The mac and cheese was excellent--rich, flavorful, and perfectly done. The chow mein, however, was a bit underwhelming and lacked flavour. That said, the overall experience was positive. The service was quick and friendly, and while it was quiet when we arrived, the place was packed by the time we left. I'd definitely go back to try more dishes, as everything around us looked great and other diners seemed to be enjoying their meals.

PATOIS TORONTO Location: Downtown Toronto Overall: 4/5 Price: $$-$$$ QUICK TAKE: Caribbean-Asian fusion that's pushing boundaries and creating flavor combinations you didn't know you needed in your life. PRO TIP: Hit this spot for lunch to avoid the dinner rush and score the coveted back booth! THE FEAST BREAKDOWN: 1. Brussels Sprout Salad (5/5) HOLD UP. This isn't your typical boring sprouts situation. The texture play here is INSANE - each bite is a journey through crispy, tender, and crunchy elements. The flavor profile? Absolutely knocked it out of the park. This is the dark horse MVP of the menu. 2. Pork Spare Ribs (3.5/5) * Flavor: On point! * Temperature: Needed some help * Would I order again?: Yes, but would request "extra hot" 3. Jerk Chicken (4/5) The heat level? Perfect for spice enthusiasts without being overwhelming. Meat was slightly Claude, but the seasoning game was strong enough to mostly make up for it. The authenticity of the jerk spices shines through. 4. Pineapple Bun Burger (4.5/5) NOW WE'RE TALKING! This burger is what fusion dreams are made of: * Perfectly seasoned beef patty * The bun! That subtle sweetness from the pineapple bun is *chef's kiss* * Juicy factor: * Temperature: Could've been hotter PRO TIP: Eat this one first while it's hot! PORTION SIZES: Feast for 2 ($$$) is actually enough for 3-4 if you're adding sides. Strategic ordering recommended! SERVICE (5/5): * Attentive without hovering * Secured us the prime back booth spot * Regular check-ins * Knowledgeable about menu items * Quick to refill drinks AMBIANCE (4/5): * Chill, laid-back vibe * Bar seating up front for solo diners * Good mix of tables for different group sizes * Music: Perfect volume for conversation * Lighting: Just right for those #foodstagram shots OVERALL EXPERIENCE: This is fusion done right - not just throwing cuisines together, but thoughtfully combining flavors that actually make sense. While there were some temperature issues, the flavors were consistently on point. THE VERDICT: Worth the visit for: * That Brussels sprout salad (seriously!) * Unique fusion concepts * Relaxed atmosphere * Attentive service * The pineapple bun burger experience Room for improvement: * Temperature consistency * Chicken tenderness * Maybe add some happy hour specials? INSIDER TIPS: * Lunch is your best bet for a chill experience * Back booth = best seat in the house * Brussels sprouts are a MUST * Save room for the burger * Portions are generous - plan accordingly PARKING: Street parking available, but can be tricky. Consider rideshare or public transit.

    Cookie butter french toast

This place was an absolute highlight of visiting Toronto. Recommended by a local Toronto resident - I was impressed with this one. The ambiance of the location when you walk in is pretty nice. The myriad of food options we ordered came on a round spinner in the center of the table, allowing us to share food very easily. So we ordered all types of things that were all amazing. The food is a mix of Asian/Carribbean fusion, which was a new thing for me, but I was so full & left wanting more still! It didn't photograph well, but the most memorable thing I got was the cookie butter french toast that was one of the most delicious desserts I've gotten at a restaurant in a long long time. Could definitely do this again.

    Pineapple burger ($27.5)

This establishment is located steps away from Bathurst and Dundas. I love the atmosphere here, it's a great place to have drinks with friends/ more casual date. Their food is fusion of Chinese and Jamaican food. I tried their pineapple burger which was $27.5. Although their food is on the pricier side, I do feel like their food is a solid 7/10. I would come back with a bigger group of friends next time, and order a bunch of things to share. The table next to us ordered their Jerk Chicken Chow Mein ($27) and it looks very appetizing/ great value!

Jerk Pork Belly Yakisoba, Kingston calamari
    Cassidy L.

the food was delicious and our server did great! However, it started off with a bad welcoming. I was running late for our reservation at 7pm due to Toronto traffic, policy is to hold for 15 mins but to call if running late. So I called 3 times at 6:45 left a voicemail and again at 6:54 and 7:10 and no answer. Then I get a call back at 7:26 and they said they gave our table up even though we were 2 minutes away. I understand policy but to not pick up your phone and call me to say you gave the table up and that your phone was upstairs...what is the point of calling then... Anyways, the food and drinks were good. Started with the Patios House Beer and Island storm. Also got the Jerk Pork Belly Yakisoba, Kingston Calamari, and Ox Tail Mac And Cheese. Our favourite was the Jerk Pork Yakisoba. It came with 3 long pieces of pork and a full plate of noodles. The calamari had such a soft breading yet crispy. The sauce was at the bottom so it was a little hard to get to for the first few bites. The Oxtail Mac and cheese had a lot of cheese and creamy; I didn't get too much ox tail in the dish but it's fine. Very filling! Price wasn't too bad for the amount of food we got! Space is small but it looked like it accommodated big groups (6+) and fit a lot of tables.

Reservations! This place was packed and they take their reservations seriously. My friend wanted to try this fusion Chinese Jamaican food because it's a unique combo you don't see much. Staff is pretty friendly. We didn't have reservations and opted to wait out any no shows and they were still attentive to us. We decided to sit outdoors instead of standing in the doorway. It was a rainy day so only one other party was dining in the covered outdoor seating. It kind of stormed so seats were little soaked but the hostess got us paper towels to wipe them down. We waited about an hour and gave up, deciding to dine outside since that didn't require reservations. Our only concern was the food getting rained on when they brought it out but the rain cooperated. I think my favorite was the burger that used a pineapple top bun as the bun. Hilarious fusion take and the one must try item. It was pretty good, not life changing but a must try once for those who grew up with pineapple buns and anyone who likes the sweet and savory mix. To those weirded out by combo, don't be a jerk chicken. We also went with the crispy noodle dish since we saw someone else order that. The sauce is pretty strong but it was good overall. Last dish we got was spare ribs. Pretty similar to the honey spare ribs you find at some dim sum places except coated and deep fried in what I assume is Jamaican seasoning. If you've never tried Jamaican food, I guess prepare yourself for flavor overload. I don't mean that in a bad way, just saying that since my friends were surprised by it.

Chicken and Waffles, Eggs Benny and Trini Mac Pie
    Rachel S.

The food here was delicious. We tried the brunch menu (so it didn't have a lot of the most commonly reviewed items) and opted for a Create Your Own Ultimate Brunch with two items and a side ($48). I think that's cheaper than if you bought everything separately, but maybe just by a few bucks? We chose the Patois Eggs Benny and Fried Chicken and Waffles, and the Trini Mac Pie (+$6). So in all, our meal was $54 and around $70 including tax and tip. The chicken and waffles was AMAZING - the cornbread waffles were such a great texture and flavour, and the chicken was seasoned perfectly. I seriously could have had a bucket of chicken. The one issue I had was that the sweet waffles kept attracting wasps, and we weren't even seated outside! We ended up scarfing down our food in 10 minutes to escape them. But other than that, 100% recommend the chicken and waffles. The Eggs Benny was good, but nothing too special. The use of the Jamaican patty as the base was definitely interesting, but it had become a bit soggy. The Trini Mac Pie was honestly really good but it was a bit unfortunate we had to pay a $6 upcharge for it as I didn't think including it in the $48 would be crazy, given the size of each dish. Overall, I definitely recommend Patois. Next time I'll come for dinner and try some of the more hyped items!

Lee is the one restaurant I look forward to every Summerlicious…read more One reason is that every year they create a completely new menu instead of reusing dishes from their regular menu. As an Asian fusion restaurant, I always come curious to see what new ideas the chef has come up with. The last two Summerlicious menus disappointed me a little--they felt a bit uninspired, with dishes like the vegetable curry and croquette. This year, however, the creativity is back, and I'd happily recommend Lee's Summerlicious menu again. Fried Wild Cod The crispy cod is served in an edible crispy rice basket, making it feel like sharing bread at the start of the meal. The fish is fried perfectly with a crisp exterior and moist, flaky interior. Paired with Thai sweet chili sauce, it's light, flavorful, and great for sharing. Gazpacho Picante A refreshing take on gazpacho. The avocado gives it a smoother texture, while the hint of spice adds another layer without overpowering the chilled tomato soup. Refreshing and a great appetizer. BBQ Jerk Pork Ribs Three generous ribs--almost a main course on their own. The meat is tender while still retaining a bit of bite, similar to the texture of slow-cooked jerk chicken. The jerk seasoning is excellent, coating every bite with rich, aromatic spices. Pan Roasted Salmon The salmon is beautifully cooked with a nicely caramelized exterior while remaining juicy inside. Each accompaniment brings something different: the olive tapenade is deeply savory, the parsnip purée is smooth and slightly sweet, the lima bean adds a creamy, nutty richness, and the lemon-tomato-pepper vinaigrette brightens everything with acidity and a gentle kick. Lima Bean Succotash Probably the prettiest dish on the menu--and also the most unusual. The lima beans and peas are cooked until tender without becoming mushy. The flavors are layered, but there's a subtle bitterness throughout. After asking the chef, we learned it's the natural flavor of lima beans and was intentionally preserved as part of the dish. Fried Organic Chicken The fried chicken is juicy and tender, reminding me of Japanese karaage. It comes with two fun sauces: one is rich and spicy with a hint of coconut, while the other is a sweet pineapple-lime mayo that pairs surprisingly well with the chicken. The pandan rice, however, was fairly ordinary. The desserts are still classic Lee--beautifully plated, but the flavors are more restrained. We tried the Rhubarb Almond Frangipane Tart, Lemon Mousse Panna Cotta (our favorite), and Strawberry Raspberry Monkey Bread. This year's Summerlicious reminded me why I fell in love with Lee in the first place.

I've been meaning to check out DaiLo for a while after only hearing amazing things about it…read more The hospitality really impressed me. The general manager and server warmly greeted us and checked up on us several times. The way they took care of us throughout the meal felt like a friend who was personally hosting us in their home. They also took the time to really explain each dish and how to best enjoy it, which I appreciated. Overall, the food definitely didn't disappoint. As someone who is sensitive to salt, I was most impressed by how every dish was perfectly seasoned (not over-seasoned with salt, sugar, and msg). Each dish tasted carefully crafted to let the ingredients shine. Betel Leaf - super fresh and aromatic flavours, really wakes up the taste buds. This is a small bite though so it's gone quick. Mushroom Dumplings - my understanding is that this is a seasonal vegetarian item but it deserves a place on the permanent menu. This was hands-down the best dish of the night. I will dream about and salivate over this dish. The brown butter sauce on the mushroom filling in the dumpling (almost like a ravioli), and truffle + cheese... my gosh, it's a flavor explosion! So decadent and rich, and seasoned to perfection. We licked the plate clean - it was THAT good. Sweet & Sour Pork Hock - the pork was so tender and soft. Again, seasoned well and very balanced. The pickled radish and peppers cut through the fat nicely between bites. I wish there were more of those radish pieces! Octopus Tacos - really smoky and well-cooked octopus, and interesting textures! I was not expecting the shell/wrap to be a vegetable! I enjoyed it and the dish felt lighter/healthier. Big Mac Bao - honestly, save your money on this one. It was good but it's exactly what you'd expect? Tastes like a Big Mac with a Bao bun rather than a regular bun. I just don't understand why someone would order this for $11 and it's pretty small. Duck Bokkeum - this was interesting! As a Korean, I appreciated the Korean twist. The duck was cooked textbook and everything was well-executed. I just don't think I'm a smoked duck person. I like Peking duck. I felt like the smokiness was a little overpowering for my own preferences and I got a little tired of the flavor after several bites. That said, the vegetables on this dish are superb and add great dimension and textures! If you like smoked duck, try it! If you're not a fan, save the $62 and spend it on something else! Aloe Sake Sorbet - a beautiful finish and palate cleanser to a wonderful meal. Very refreshing. You can taste both the sake and the aloe. We were a group of 6 and had a family-style dinner. We ordered 4 starters, 4 mains and 3 desserts. It was the perfect amount. Every dish was unique and enjoyable. The flavours and textures were impressive, we truly enjoyed our dinning experience. For starters, we got the carpaccio (tasted like pho), fried watermelon (crispy and juicy), eggplant burrata (very nice pairing), octopus taco (my favourite!). For mains, we got the chicken, duck, lamb, truffle fried rice. Everything was cooked perfectly. The lamb and duck were my personal favourite. I also love all the different pairings it came with on the side. A small note, I changed my reservation from 4 people to 6 an hour before dinner. And was told for party of 5+, the $125 per person tasting menu is required. This threw me off, but the manager Jeff was really nice and gave us an exception. They also offer complimentary still and sparkling water. The washroom is located in the basement level. The service is in line with a high end restaurant - plates changed between courses, napkins fold when you step away, dishes explained, etc. Overall, great experience and I will come back.

For a house special, I would expect a solid crowd-pleaser. Having each bite feeling mostly like 'crunch' is not what I think of as fried rice nor a favourite for most people. My ideal fried rice focuses on the grains of rice, with substantial bite and flavour in each spoonful. The flavour was most definitely there, don't get me wrong but it was extremely hard to eat more than a bowl. The redeeming qualities were in the flavour and cute little mushroom garden concept. If they had maybe 2x the amount of rice for the ratio of toppings and crunch, I would say this is a delicious and near perfect fried rice. Not bad, but a hefty price tag for a meal that I had really high hopes for.

The workers were very friendly and funny. I had a great time bantering with them. My friend from 8th grade and I reunited for the first time in 21 years over dinner. This was one of her picks, and I am deeply grateful she chose it. Appetizers: Rock Shrimp, Fatty Tuna Nigiri, Crispy Rice Tuna Entrée: Jidori Chicken Drinks: Sangria, Champagne Dessert: Yuzu Citrus The rock shrimp was delicious. We loved the sauce it was tossed in. My friend is not usually a shrimp fan but she polished it off for me. The fatty tuna nigiri was great, as expected, and the crispy rice tuna was phenomenal. The Jidori chicken was delightful. We loved the sauce, and the mashed potatoes were pillowy. I did not have the sangria but my friend said it was the best she had ever had. The yuzu citrus dessert came with strawberry gelato and cookie crumbs. The gelato was not overly sweet and the yuzu was perfectly tart. They also put a little "Reunited" note on the dessert plate, which we both thought was such a sweet touch. Definitely pricey, but definitely worth it. Recommended it to my Toronto friends, I really want to go back and get that king crab rice.

The menu leans Korean fusion and nothing feels forced or overdone. I tried them during Winterlicious and it was such a good intro to what they do. Standouts for me: Braised short rib was unreal. I am taiwanese and I have to say this was delicious. There is someone actually making noodles in the back. Service was quick and very nice and upbeat. Our server, Sophia, was bubbly and friendly, giving suggestions and helping with the ordering process for the other person who wasn't as sure what they wanted. We eventually went with two appetizers and two entrees, which was more than enough food, and honestly, we could have only ordered one appetizer. The better of the two appetizers was the CAD 8.95 Hand Shredded Pepper Chicken/手撕椒麻雞/Shou Si Ji. The dish consists of cold chicken in a flavorful sauce, topped with some greens. The chicken was tender, with a mild, pleasant spice and a bit of numbingness from the Sichuan peppercorns, along with some fragrance, presumably from sesame oil. It reminded me a bit of salivating chicken you find in some Szechuan spots, but it was more aromatic and a bit less spicy. The other appetizer was the Steamed Edamame/岩鹽毛豆 with Himalayan pink salt for CAD 5.95. The other person chose between this and the vegetable dumplings, as he avoids pork, and it was, of course, lighter than the other appetizer. The decent portion of edamame was topped with some pickled carrots as a garnish. My main dish was the Braised Beef Noodles/紅燒牛肉面/Hong Shao Niu Rou Mian. The dish included several options, including size, noodle style, and spice level. I chose the large for CAD $20.95, medium spice, and for the noodle style, I chose flat/宽面, as it was closest to the prism style I like at Lanzhou spots in the States. Along with these, I also added a tea egg for an extra CAD 2.95. Outside the add-on, the dish also had a couple of large slices of radish. Compared to some spots in NYC, I slightly preferred the QQ/bouncy texture of the noodles at a spot near me. However, the broth was better here with a balanced amount of mala, though I would likely order spicy next time, as I tend to add chili oil to the relatively lighter Lanzhou broths. The beef was also much better, being tender with a mild chew regardless of whether it was tendon or other cuts. The tea egg was flavorful and worth the add-on, especially when the inside was dipped further into the broth. I can see why others order this. The other person went with the Signature Stir-fried Noodles/招牌炒面/Chao Tatiaozi. There was an option of protein, and he went with Chicken for $17.95 and added the same egg. I tried a bit, and there was a pleasant pepperiness with a bit of numbing flavor, but less than my dish. The noodles had a good bounciness and overall had a slightly better chewiness than mine. This was lighter overall, but also tasty. This spot has apparently come to the US already at the Mall of America, and I would love it if there were a location closer to me. Good place.
