I've been meaning to visit Patois for a while, but finally had some time before seeing a concert up the street. I didn't have a reservation but the host at Patois was kind enough to seat myself and my brother at the bar during a busy Saturday evening. Sitting at the bar was the true highlight, I was blown away by the charisma and charm of the bartenders. I'm not one to be chatty, but both the bartenders were so funny and really brought the night alive. We ordered the Jerk Pork Belly Yakisoba, Jerk Chicken and the Trini Mac Pie. I was obsessed with both the jerk chicken and pork belly flavors, it was hot, juicy and beyond memorable. I would order the trini mac pie again too, the crispy and cheesy combo was the best. I also got their Rum Punch cocktail and my brother got straight lighter fluid, lol. And again the bartenders made them perfectly with a slight of sarcastic banter. I love the fusion of the two cuisines, it's clever and makes sense. I tried the yakisoba, jerk chicken and pineapple bun burger. My favourite was the yakisoba, great flavour and tasted fresh. The jerk chicken was cooked perfectly and the pineapple bun burger was a unique experience. I enjoyed the sweetness of the bread however, I don't think it's something every one would enjoy. Finally got a chance to try this place. It's usually always full so make a reservation before going!! I started with the rum punch which was amazing, definitely exactly what I expected though. Cassava fries supreme: my favorite dish of the night, it was a unique dish Trini mac pie: very different than what I thought, oxtail gravy was great. Quantity was small for what I paid Fried chicken: nothing special. This is one of their most recommended dishes but I found it bland. I've had better fried chicken at popeyes. Goat doubles: amazing flavors. The pickled cucumber added a good taste. Very messy and definitely not a date night food. Overall it was an underwhelming experience. They tried very hard to be a fusion restaurant so some of the Caribbean flavors are muted. Worth a try though. At least for the rum punch! read more

Good food; bad service to non-locals (I hope that was the only reason *shrugs*) [started this review months ago and forgot to finish it] The food is really really good. It has nice fusion dining options of things we Americans wouldn't typically think to put together but pair well. I recall the sticky bacon really sticking out as delicious to me and the dish that I had was perfect. Definitely come in and try the food options. My only [big] problem with this restaurant is the service. Our server from the outset of us sitting down (myself and two AA women) seemed to single us out as the type of customers he would not like. He literally seemed disgusted that we were seated in his section and he had to serve us. Maybe we didn't fit their local hipster scene profile, idk?? I don't want to base the entire restaurant on him because most everyone else there seemed ok. He was a black Canadian, probably with some Caribbean heritage. A blend of Jamaican and other styles of influences go into making this restaurant a nice place to dine. Located along the busy Queen West strip, it's a great place to meet after work for dinner and conversation. Prices are on the higher end for someone that is used to dining on a $20-$25 dinner budget. The music is way too loud and the restaurant is way too dark to dine in. I could barely move my chair to get up without bumping into another table around me. The washroom is in the basement as are most downtown Toronto restaurants. However, it is a nice restaurant to have food with friends. I tried the sorrel inspired cocktail. I was excited to get the damn drink but it disappointed big time. Sorrel is something I am very familiar with and I barely tasted in the drink. I did appreciate the green leaf in my drink though. My entrée consisted of dirty fried rice which was very delicious. Lap cheong, cajun trinity and farm egg minus the red sausage. It was a mixture of Jamaican and chinese style flavours. The show stopper was the fried chicken. Big pieces of fried chicken with bold flavours - so succulent. Small pieces of watermelon pickle, sweet sriracha and korean half sour pickle. I bookmarked Patois when it first opened after seeing a picture of their pineapple bun burger. Since my husband's family tend to take us out to eat in the GTA, Patois stayed on my forever growing and forgotten to-eat list! We finally paid a visit after completing my first day of board exam which happened to be Toronto's downtown! The five of us came and were seated immediately for our 6pm reservation (the only one available when we made our reservation a week in advance). Honestly though, might as well had not made a reservation - The worst part of the dinner was our seating/table situation. They put together a few high chairs at the bar table by the entrance. There was barely any space for us to move in and out or put our coats or bags. We were forced to keep our coats on (we were freezing by the opening of door with incoming and outgoing guests). Worst of all - we had to share half the table with two other patrons. It was the most awkward and uncomfortable seating situation. But the foods and services really made up for the whole experience! The five of us shared the 3 pineapple buns, jerk pork belly, Jamaican oxtail, patties double down, full order of jerk chicken, full and a half order of fried chicken. Both jerk and fried chicken were extremely juicy and flavourful. We liked them so much that we added another order! The Jamaican oxtails were tender and fell right off the bone. Served with coconut rice and steamed Bok Choy - perfect one person entree / get two if you are planning to share! The highlight of the night was definitely the pineapple bun burger. I must had had pineapple bun as breakfast at least a handful of times per week growing up. Why didn't I think of the genius idea of eating it with burger patties? Not just one but two JUICY patties stuffed between the my fav bun - savory and sweet all in one - beyond amazing. We wrapped up our meal by sharing all three of their desserts - stuffed cheesecake French toast, pecan pie, and habanero citrus sorbet with coconut panna cotta. All worthy of trying! I particularly enjoyed the refreshingly spicy sorbet with the lightly sweetened, silky smooth, coconuty panna cotta. My in laws raved about the bursting cheesy French toasts while my husband particularly enjoyed the gooey, warm pecan pie. Overall - very satisfied with dinner! I would love to return to try out their brunch especially after seeing Hong Kong styled egg waffle on their menu! Service was attentive and warm - which we didn't expect since we were shoved into the front bar corner! Our waters were instantly and continuously refilled. Ok I'm giving Patois a 4.5 stars here. Why? You may ask and I might tell you. There are a lot of positives and a couple of negatives which I will explain the latter in a bit. Positives? If the legendary Dinah Koo recommended this place then who am I to say no? Dinah just happens to be one individual that I have learned my crafts and desire for food. A positive influence that created my base for cooking and the art and science behind food. She is after all, the original Asian Fusion Queen of Toronto. Google her history from the early days in the 60's from Playboy bar bunny to the creator of the original Dinah's Cupboard to Tiger Lily and catering maven who made Peking duck appetizers a chic must haves at lavish parties amongst Toronto's elites. So with that I bring you Patois. No slouch at creating Fusion Asianized food in the form of Jamaican comfort goodness. The food served here blends Jamaican spice with Cantonese elements and the result is fun fun fun! Pair it up with some cocktails or a coconut and rum drink with paper umbrella and you've got conversational stimulus to go strong into the night. Sure you might see some reviews about negative noodles or bony oxtail but hey! It's their opinion and their experience. When I tried some of those dishes I could say yeah, sure mmmkay. I chose a higher path as I tried to imagine how and why the chef created the dishes this way and the resulting execution. So I do have one nitpick. It's with many restaurants in the flavouring of the food they cook and with the usage of salt. Salt is not the same from one variety to another. I think restaurants forget this. Which can result in some dishes in being overly salty for some. This is a temperament and craft that needs to be honed better as a tasting skill. If they can fine tune that, this place is worthy of a 5 star beating. Don't forget they have a great Cantonese place in Chinatown worthy of equal aplomb. I've heard mixed reviews about this restaurant from a variety of foodies. The venue is cute, nice atmosphere with good music. I was seated near the booth by the kitchen which was really nice for a group. However it was super hot by the kitchen which was pretty uncomfortable. I really enjoyed the BBQ cauliflower, one of the best menu items! I wasn't a fan of their veggie patties however those cheesy potatoes were amazing as well, perfectly crispy on the outside with that sauce I also tried the jerk lobster and the green seasoning shrimp but wasn't a fan. The drinks were ok, I tried the sangria and rum punch. I wouldn't suggest either however maybe a Stag, you can never go wrong with a Stag. read more

Came in late on a weekday after strolling by after an event. I had heard a lot about the restaurant and wanted to try it out. The restaurant was pretty filled and the staff were super friendly despite it being close to closing! The food on the other hand didn't stand out. We had the "Juicy Jerk Chicken", the Coleslaw, and the Curry Goat at the time. The jerk chicken contrary to its name was really really dry. The chicken was also cut oddly, because there were SO many bones, at a bunch of weird angles. It disappoints me to say that I didn't enjoy the Jerk Chicken, which should be a tell tale sign of how good a Jamaican restaurant is. I've had tons of way better Jerk Chicken from take out restaurants at a way lower price. The Coleslaw which was a recommendation from our waiter tasted OFF to both me and my friend. It was oddly sweet and tasted a lot like milk, and nothing like any coleslaw we've eaten before - needless to say we didn't finish it. The most redeeming thing on the menu was this Curry Goat "wrap" like item which seems to no longer be on the menu. It was an OK curry goat, but was the best item compared to the other two. Checked out Patois as we heard great things about the food and atmosphere. All the things we heard were bang on. Food was all very tempting but we had to make a decision. Went for the Juicy Jerk Chicken, Oxtail, Brussel Sprouts ( to die for), Popcorn Shrimp on bed of rice, Kale Salad, Trini Mac Pie and to end it off, the Cookie Butter French toast. Had a few cocktails to start off the evening as well. The staff were phenomenal. Very attentive and courteous. We noticed how busy Uber Eats was picking up "to go" meals. Says a lot about the food itself. Will definitely return with other friends and introduce them to this amazing "diamond in the rough" Also, for dining out, the prices were very reasonable. Hands down the best dish was the brussel sprouts and their hot sauce was actually hot. Definitely order food to share as the meals come out of the kitchen as their done, not all at once. This also meant that we had to wait very long for some dishes (like the curry goat). The jerk chow mein was huge, with an interesting taste. It came out on the crispy noodles, and then the sauce cooked and softened them. The juicy jerk chicken was really good and very spicy. Their hot sauce game is on point. I'm taking a star off though because one of the staff members behind the bar was very unprofessional. She had blond hair and seemed to be in management (because she was talking about her coconut suppliers). She had seated a couple of drunk guys up at the bar and was very flirty and loud to them the entire time. She got them a drink in a coconut and was complaining about their suppliers. She was making fun of their local Asian supplier from china town and was complaining about them. I'm not one to get easily offended but she was being very rude and racist toward them while being overly flirty and unprofessional. I would say I wouldn't really recommend this place ever though the decor was nice and the food was good. It's very busy and their staff is overworked for the most part. Went here as I am a huge fan of jerk and fried chicken and so my friends recommended we come give this a try as it's a pretty busy spot. Service: we came about 30-45 mins after the restaurant opened and there was 1 table with one bartender and 2 servers so I was quite surprised when we had to keep flagging them down to order, refill waters and grabbing the check Food: we ordered a salad (forgot the take pic), jerk chicken and the o.g The jerk chicken was by far the showstopper and we were quite disappointed to see the chicken very pink and with no skin on some of them. Came here on a weekday night Was able to get a table without making reservation just a walk-in. The interior is SO CUTE! Floaties hanging from the ceiling and a total tropical vibe! Even the glass of water comes in the cutest bright pink flamingo inflatable cup holder! Started with the Jamaican patty double down, delish! Nothing fancy but it came out really hot and hit the greasiness satisfaction factor plus its covered in melted cheese inside so yum! The O.G cauliflower was good but not great, it was slightly soggy and served lukewarm on the colder side. The sauce was a bit spicy and the flavors were good though. The jerk chicken was moist and not dry but again felt a bit lukewarm. The garlic sauce was also great with it and really bold. I visited Patois today after 3 years of first trying it. Not only am I West Indian, but I grew up in Trinidad, so definitely know what to expect from a West Indian spot. Jerk is spicy- given- but it's also a blend of SEVERAL spices, where with each bite, along with the spice, you taste a hint of "something". What I can give Patios credit for with their jerk chicken dish is the heat- that's about it. No Trini pours cheese sauce on their macaroni pie. I get presentation is key, but it actually tasted better without it. I also missed that "cripsy" top, but tbh, wasn't too bad on taste. The rice and pease had potential, but after tasting it off a vendor in Kingston JA, I would have loved to taste the hint of coconut milk that takes it to that next level. The potato salad was not at any West Indian standard- it missed that creaminess that's synonymous to a WI potato salad. I will give them 5 stars for their fried chicken though- one of the best in the city. A friend brought us here for dinner on a week night. The restaurant is set up hipster style. Service was fine but our group of 4 found the food fairly disappointing. We ordered the "whole shebang" which they suggested fed 4 people. We all left feeling hungry but the prices didn't really justify ordering any more food. We found all the food relatively tasty but nothing out of the ordinary, in fact I found some of the dishes just rip off cheap chinese food (considering the prices we were paying). Jamaican patty - 4/5 love how flaky the pastry on the outside is, not spicy enough though, meat is nice and saucy Curry shrimp - 5/5 nice portion size, shrimp is big and juicy, curry is delicious. Coleslaw that comes with the dishes is top notch, not watery and perfectly seasoned. Jerk chicken - 3/5 jerk chicken is juicy, portion size not that big. Big issue with this dish is not enough sauce on the rice, even though we added oxtail gravy, the rice did not get soaked enough in them. Added a macaroni on the side that was a bit too salty. French toast 3/5 - we like the idea of cookie batter French toast, unfortunately this was way too sweet and deeply fried to the point where things were too dry. Toast itself was not moist how French toast usually is. The syrup had a whole piece of butter dropped inside, it was incredibly heavy for the already dry and heavy toast. Came here for a birthday party with a group of ten people. We made reservations and had to do their pre-fix menu because the group was more than 6 people. The pre-fix means you have to pick the dishes you want before hand, and put down a deposit. They still made us wait 40 minutes to get seated, it took the waiter 10 minutes to come by and ask us what we want to drink. Then after we reminded them, another 30 to get our food (remember we had to order everything a day before, so they knew exactly what and how much food needed to be prepared for us). On top of it all, our chicken was burnt. The wait staff really tried to make it up to us by giving the birthday girl a few complimentary drinks, but overall the experience was terrible. read more

Recently had dinner here with friends and had a wonderful time. Be warned that this is a very popular spot and a relatively small space. We had reservations for 8pm but had to wait until 8:25 for our table, which was (fortunately) the only hiccup of the night. We used the time productively to pick all the dishes that looked interesting from both the the regular menu and the feature menu. The Jerk Chicken Chow Mein started the dinner with what Patois is about: Caribbean-Asian fusion. Spicy jerk chicken with mushrooms and baby boy choy is poured over a crispy crunchy block of chow mein. The spice from the chicken keeps the dish in the Caribbean, while the familiar sauce and noodles brings the dish back to Asia. A smart fusion dish. The Chinese Pineapple Bun Burger was a surprisingly well-executed also. The two smashed patties were delicious, well seared and fell apart tender. The addition sweetness of the Pinapple Bun was a perfect match. The OG Fried Chicken was amazing. Wonderfully crunchy on the outside but moist and flavourful inside. We left a large peice of the chicken breast until after we tasted the other dishes, but it was still steaming hot when we finally cracked into it. We also had the Curry Goat Doubles, Jamaican Oxtail, and the Saltfish Fritters. Each was well made in their own way but more subtle in flavor. I let a cousin of mine pick the meet up location and this is what she chose (of course I should've trust her judgment as she's an even bigger foodie than me...check her out on YouTube "mtlfoodsnob"). So glad we went. Loved it! Lobster (from Features menu): Got the lobster cuz that was the one thing my cousin wanted. We really enjoyed it. Reminded me of Hua Sang's style of lobster where it's a dry deep fry batter and then seasoned. This one had jerk spices and ritz crackers which gave it a unique flavour profile. I really enjoyed it. You need to be prepared to get your hands dirty and spend more time at the table working on it as it's literally a whole lobster chopped into manageable pieces but still requires diligence and work to get all the meat out. They provide a wet nap and lobster eating utensils. The only thing is, it's quite salty/strong savoury flavour so I think it would've been better if it was served with a bowl of white rice as eating it by itself just didn't feel right. Juicy Jerk Chicken: -get the half size if it's just two people and you want to order several dishes to sample the menu as it's a good sample size (about a quarter chicken) -I really enjoyed the seasoning and it was BBQ'd to perfection Double Beef Patty (I don't remember the exact name of this dish, it was the first item on their menu): -though the name suggests two parties, it was more like one regular size patty cut in half and stacked one half over the other layered with cheese and bacon so portion size is small -an interesting way to dress up a beef patty (also available in vegetarian patty) - simple but enjoyable Coconut juice from a whole, fresh coconut: -LOVED IT -I was expecting a very bland and meh coconut but was blown away at how flavourful and sweet the juice was! We questioned whether sugar was added but I'm pretty sure it was just naturally that way Side note: Not sure if it was the garlic dip from the juicy jerk chicken or something in the lobster but I left with very bad breath! I've brushed my teeth and gurgled mouth wash and it's now the morning after that I'm writing this review and I can still taste whatever I had in my mouth (and I know my breath was bad because I came home and my husband told me right away). For future visit: Next time I come back I want to order everything on their menu for $115 (good for 3-4 people). Although it's not really everything on their menu, more like just half their menu because they have two pages in their menu for food, the first being the Features and the second being the traditional selections. Not sure if Features get changed every now and then? Anyhow, I'd want to try a few other things on their featured menu too like the chow mein which I passed up thinking it wouldn't be good but after seeing another table order it, it definitely looks good (noodles look super crispy the way I like my chow mein). read more

Pretty bad experience Sept 2022 Saturday night. Restaurant was pretty empty inside but we were seated next to the bathrooms anyway. Our server was in a rush to be somewhere else despite the empty restaurant. Didn't care to describe the specials to us- she did describe them to another table though. Ordered a few things, our server forgot to enter one of the items we ordered for the kitchen. The jerk chicken was tasty but dry. Tastes like ham. Small portion for the price, quarter chicken for eighteen dollars. Sides are ordered separately. Jerk pork belly yakisoba at twenty five dollars was the item our server forgot so maybe it was made in a rush to cover for her mistake. It was pretty awful. Too salty, too oily, overcooked veg, jerk pork belly was undercooked. Could have made a better noodle dish in my sleep. Upon paying no thank you from our server, just took the machine, receipt, and walked away. Will never return here and advise you not to come. It's a great example good branding but terrible product.
