I wrote a scathing review months ago, now deleted. Suffice it to say, though my initial experiences were favorable, a later one elicited consternation. I'll elucidate after commenting on what I perceive as the present state of the dental profession & also this practice.
All professions are dealing with rising costs & market issues not always serving patients well. With few exceptions, personal income hasn't grown much of late, shrinking disposable funds for housing, food, transportation & such, thus reducing demand for other services. Most people are hard-pressed to provide needed dental care. Practices responded by integrating marketing efforts to increase service utilization by existing patients. Some are ethical & others suspect. Some aggressively marketed services impart little actual value.
Dr. Demetrakopulos has a friendly staff & comfortable setting with which to receive one's dental care. There's a great deal of attention to aesthetics, so the practice is aptly named. There is a subtle & consistent marketing emphasis to the end of the above-stated objectives. ('Dr. Pauline" offered me an appliance to address supposed 'grinding of my teeth while sleeping,' yet another practitioner stated it was unnecessary. Such devices are high profit-margin.). This is disconcerting, however, if one is informed & understands one's needs versus what may simply be desirable, it's possible to be served satisfactorily without mortgaging the farm. Additionally, her hygienist recommended I schedule a second, & prompt, appointment to address an 'unusual amount of plaque' at what would result in twice the cost, even though I had been following previous recommendations. 'Dr. Pauline' indicated that she "wasn't comfortable with that." I don't know, however I'm willing to reserve judgment for now. In my opinion, and true of many practices, local anesthesia is overused in this practice for fear of causing some minor pain.
My previous review detailed a bitter experience that caused me much angst. Many people find the cost of dental care difficult to immediately afford. Alternative, third-party financing is typically available to alleviate this, allowing the practice to provide services & be immediately compensated (at cost to the practice), while offering patients time payments, seemingly at no additional cost. This office offers financing allowing payments over 12, 18 or 24 months in consideration of the amount & negotiated agreement. Failure to pay in full in the agreed time results in usurious charges, including back interest for the full term, about 26% as I recall. A single missed or late payment and/or failure to pay in full within the agreed time can add hundreds. It's wise to know one's means.
My experience my be untypical. I agreed to a 24-month payout for which I was prepared. Due to what has since been characterized as "employee misconduct," I was charged back interest at the above rate after 12 months, even though promised a 24-month, no-interest payout, so I contacted the practice. The issue escalated due to poor behavior by the employee & it was necessary to suggest a legal resolution. Shortly after, I was essentially 'fired' by Dr. Demetrakopulos. She since acknowledged it was her misunderstanding due to being misled by her employee. This was all regrettable & disappointing. I had previously felt a strong loyalty to her.
To Dr. Demetrakopulos' credit, I was reimbursed for my trouble, as well as relieved of the interest burden resulting from the employee's error. (I say "error" because I have no direct knowledge of any intent to misrepresent. A harsher interpretation might lead to another conclusion.) 'Dr. Pauline' also restored at no cost a filling that failed after 7 months of the initial service, though not necessarily as a result of any fault on her part.
Since then, I briefly availed myself of another practice & found its marketing behavior to be exploitative, including a recommendation for a needless 'fluoride treatment' (I'm not a child for whom there may be merit), & an incident in which information was knowingly withheld from me until midway through a procedure, thus preventing me exercising a potential low cost alternative, to the end of adding nearly $1000 in unanticipated fees. Both the above happened at a practice in Santa Rosa, NOT in Dr. Demetrakopulos' office.
My impression is that all dental practices are being squeezed financially from many directions causing them to actively market to their patients & a few may also do so out of abject greed. A second opinion for any recommendation may be useful, regardless the dentist. I'm still assessing whether I'll return to "Dr. Pauline" in the future. Suffice it to say, recent events positively altered my previously negative impression & my review as well. For now, I've upgraded my rating from 1 star to 3, & I may upgrade further with additional positive outcomes. My immediate purpose is to acknowledge my most recent, positive experience. read more
