Just so happens I was in Dawson and well, the pickings are pretty slim so it's not surprise this place jumped out at me immediately. The name is certainly no lie, it literally looks like a (rundown) farmhouse off the side of the main (?) road through town. Parking is plentiful, assuming you don't mind parking on unpaved and uneven ground. Certainly wasn't an issue the day I visited but I can imagine it'd be a pain if it were raining. Inside there appeared to be plenty of tables inside, along with a couple high tops and an odd bar type space to the right. Ordering was most pretty straight forward, and the girl taking my order was happy to point out the things they didn't have that day (brisket and a host of sides). Regardless, still a pretty decent lineup to order from including ribs, chicken and pork, along with some crazier options I didn't spring for (turkey leg and frog legs!). I ended up getting the rib plate and added a few extra bones, which they were quite accommodating on and just asked how many more I wanted. Taste wise they were quite good, great smoke, pretty meaty and I made quick work of them all. I elected for beans and potato salad for my sides, and while the beans were forgettable, the potato salad was pretty good. The sauce was ok, nothing too fancy and just a basic sauce that I ended up adding a bit of hot sauce to. All in all, a pretty solid place in the middle of nowhere. Don't know when, if ever, I'll be back but I wouldn't hesitate to drop back in again.

We decided to try this place considering the reviews and it didn't disappoint. We had the ribs and…read morepulled pork sandwich and both were really good. Their fried green tomatoes were sliced thin which helped keep them crispy. The serving sizes were plentiful and definitely worth the money. We ordered two Meat & 2's and both consisted of A Big Fat Fried Chicken Breast, Black-Eyed Peas and Mac n Cheese. As always the chicken was cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside with that perfect fried chicken skin and totally moist meat. The mac n cheese was very moist, not really runny and the texture was the perfect chew. No mushiness and no hard noodles. The black-eyed peas were out of this world good. They had a bit of spice in them and cooked good ole' Southern Style...cooked! We ate and ate until there was not more room. We gladly took our left overs for another wonderful meal. As we were leaving I said, oh, no "I forgot to take pictures. So I went and broke in line and took a couple of the cafeteria style food that everyone was so patiently waiting to be served. The staff works extremely hard. The restaurant is very clean. And the food is absolutely delicious. They do take togo orders and sometimes the line is out the door. They are closed on Saturdays. Highly recommend one try if in the area. Prices have remained relatively low while other places have increased their prices drastically. Our two meals which included drinks and tax was about $21. You can still buy a whole fried wing for under $2...it is $1.95.

You just have to know the procedure, but it wasn't only me, a Northerner whose brain hadn't yet fully recalibrated for the local accent. Locals were confused too. Procedure is this: tell them your drink preference (I had water), pick up a tray, put it on the counter, pick out a main, three sides, a dessert, slide it down to the register, pay, and take it to your table. At that point do you begin eating? No! Remove your items from the tray and they come by and pick it up. Now begin! You may be thinking "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld but I assure you it didn't feel that way. Just the quirky way they run the place. The waitress did warm up after I was there a while, came over to ask where I was from, etc. And to try to convince me to come back for breakfast! This is cafeteria style, with everything prepared ahead of time and kept warm on steam trays. So how do they keep that fried chicken so crunchy and delicious? Perhaps the best I've ever had, the batter so crunchy you could probably hear me eating from another room, assertively peppery, the large leg and thigh pieces perfectly cooked and juicy. (White meat also available.) My sides were lima beans, turnip greens, and yams. The highlight was the yams: super sweet but not in a bad way, balanced by good seasonings. The beans were fine, a bit salty. The only disappointment were the turnip greens, too finely chopped and overcooked. The portion sizes were decent. Also included is corn bread. Two choices: baked or fried. Never heard of fried so I tried that. Interesting but a little chewy and not so much corn flavor; next time I'd get the baked. Finishing this rather large lunch was a challenge for me but I managed, while taking in the local ambience. I saved the dessert for later. Dessert? Yes. I was also asked on ordering what I wanted for dessert. The only one that appealed was the red velvet cake (the others were a cobbler and bread pudding) so I got that. I assumed it was included but when I paid I saw it was not. $4; no big deal. It didn't look that good, a thin 1 inch slice tightly shrink wrapped on a paper plate. Looks were deceiving. The first time I actually liked red velvet cake, a light crumbly texture and cream cheese frosting that tasted of more than sugar. With the amount of frosting this tiny slice was quite filling and I'm glad it wasn't larger. All this for a little over $21. I think this was including tip but I'm not positive. Either way, great deal!

The Silo is a small, meat and three, cafeteria-style restaurant, with a small, humble range of choices obviously cooked fresh. There really was only a plate option available with your choice of entree (fried chicken/meatloaf), 2 sides, cornbread, dessert (only pie that day), and sweet tea. The chicken was piping hot when we got it, tender and juicy but could've had a little more seasoning. The mac and mashed potatoes were decent, as well as the cornbread which had a nice bit of crust. I really liked the peanut butter pie I got, not too sweet and light enough to finish after a pretty heavy meal.

For $9.95 you got, an entree (Fried Chicken Quarter or Baked Spaghetti), 2 veggies (MacCheese, Green Beans, Rutabaga, couple of others), Peach Cobbler, biscuit/cornbread, and tea. For a bakery, a DEEP south one at that, you would expect the cobbler to be really good...not so much. It was all edible, but something was off, perhaps it just wasn't seasoned enough. Like there wasn't any sugar or salt in anything. Everybody was super friendly, and these folks were FAST! The restaurant was clean and comfortable. It's one of the only food options in town, and the only thing available on this Sunday.
