Also came with a huge wedge of cake. The chicken was very flavorful and fried well. The green beans were tasty as well. I wasn't a fan of the cake..a bit dry. There are some downsides that prevented my rating from mirroring the stratospheric and glowing reviews on user-driven platforms like Yelp. While the batter is wonderful, the chicken is dry. The rice is uneventful. And the mac 'n' cheese was a little runnier than I prefer but wonderfully flavorful nonetheless. The choices for bread were stale Hawaiian rolls or homemade cornbread. As good as Soul Food can be. We use to stop here about 6 times a year when traveling through now it is about once a year...and oh, how we miss it. We ordered two Meat & 2's and both consisted of A Big Fat Fried Chicken Breast, Black-Eyed Peas and Mac n Cheese. As always the chicken was cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside with that perfect fried chicken skin and totally moist meat. The mac n cheese was very moist, not really runny and the texture was the perfect chew. No mushiness and no hard noodles. The black-eyed peas were out of this world good. They had a bit of spice in them and cooked good ole' Southern Style...cooked! We ate and ate until there was not more room. We gladly took our left overs for another wonderful meal. As we were leaving I said, oh, no "I forgot to take pictures. So I went and broke in line and took a couple of the cafeteria style food that everyone was so patiently waiting to be served. The staff works extremely hard. The restaurant is very clean. And the food is absolutely delicious. They do take togo orders and sometimes the line is out the door. They are closed on Saturdays. Highly recommend one try if in the area. Prices have remained relatively low while other places have increased their prices drastically. Our two meals which included drinks and tax was about $21. We were at the Legacy center for a tour and decided to try their restaurant. There were very long lines at lunch hour and only a single cashier, Some groups had trouble finding seats. The live at the single cashier was long. We both had fried chicken with the sides of squash and corn on the cob. With a fountain drink and a Corn Muffin. The fried chicken was absolutely great!!! Horrible! There are other great restaurants in Montgomery. A large group of us visited the museum. We called ahead three times to book a space in the large room. No response. They literally had no food available on Sunday, July 6, 2025 and the serves could care less. I left and came to one of the restaurant behind the museum. The food and service was good. Mind you. This place is not exactly five stars when it comes to customer service. There were only two other customers in the restaurant so I guess this is the norm. Being this is my first time here, I looked over the menu and decided I wanted a veggie plate but after I walked to the display station to check out their selections, I changed my mind. The food appeared to have been sitting in the pans all day and most pans were empty. My husband decided he would still give them a try so I purchased a plate for him and sampled a few bites. The field peas and the potato salad are very good. The green beans were ok. I don't eat fish but my husband said it was ok but It would have been better had it been freshly cooked. If you plan on trying their food, try to go when the food is freshly prepared, lunch time. I might give them another try the next time I am in town visiting my in laws. read more

This was the absolute best find during my visit to Alabama. It was my last full day and I refused to leave the south without having some real soul food. I found this restaurant on Yelp and the pics looked so good. It's easy to find in a shopping plaza right off the freeway with plenty of parking. We tried to enter the front door but the line was so long it reached the back door. We started to leave instead of waiting in line but the wait was definitely worth it. The line doesn't move super fast but they are constantly replenishing the food and the lady serving the food Lorine is so sweet. She reminded me of my grandma. You can always call in your order and not wait in line, but the menu is constantly changing. The day we went they had baked and fried chicken and beef tips over rice as the meats. The sides to choose from were pole beans, okra, candied yams, macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, mashed potatoes. Everything looked so good it was difficult to choose. I got baked chicken, pole beans, and macaroni and cheese. Everything was delicious just like grandma made it and the portions are generous. My hubby had baked chicken, okra, macaroni and cheese, and candied yams. He ate every bit in one sitting. All of this food plus bread and a drink was only like $27. I could eat there everyday. First it's a cafeteria style restaurant. Lunch hour expect a slow line. I got fried chicken,rice with brown gravy and backed macaroni and cheese with a cornbread roll. It was good but bland. It was the premade little patties and not good. $18.09 was a bit much for lunch. It was a close place to eat since I was getting my car worked on. Also got there at 1:15 or so. Really good meat and 3 type place. My wife and I were in Auburn two days. We ended up eating lunch here both days. If you are someone who likes a meat and 3 type place you will love this place. They make 3 meats each days and around 6 vegetables it seems. Fried chicken is always one of the meats. Every vegetable we had was excellent. We had chicken and dumplings as a meat one day and no meat the second day. You can choose cornbread or roll and they have diced onions and tomato you can add. They also have a few desserts like you would expect. My wife had the pound cake and loved it. A small bonus is that it seemed like the pepper sauce was homemade. It was excellent. The only reason I did not rate this place 5 star is because the selection is small so If you happen to go there on a day that doesn't have selections you like as much then you might strikeout. For example, the second day we didn't care for the meat choices. Fortunately we both like vegetable plates but with around 6 vegetables choices we came close to not being able to fill a full plate. One more thing that was interesting to me. They had kool aid as a drink option. Not sure I've ever seen that but kool aid was a staple for a kid growing up in the 70s. That was nostalgic. read more

I grew up in rural SC. This place brought back all the memories! The catfish was great. This kind of food is not everyone's favorite, but I give it 5 stars for being EXACTLY what you want when you are looking for Southern food. Some notes for people who haven't had this kind of thing before... 1. The yams are extremely sweet and some vegetables will be softer than you might expect. So, don't be surprised. 2.
