I have a super reactive terrier who I've been terrified to take to any sort of groomer. Alicia took her time in meeting him and helping establish respect with treats, she also gave me a report about his behavior during the groom and things to help him be calmer. I took my King Charles Cavalier to Paws and Claws for bath and a little trim near her butt. She was groomed by the OWNER. Not the first time I had been here. She trummed the hair on her back I don't know why. Three days later my dog was jumping on sofa , gave her a little push and she cried. (She had been licking her butt ever since her grooming). She would not let me look. My vet had no appointment so took her to immediate care. Vet told me she had her butt cut, it had dried blood and was raw and red. She had to get cleaned up got a cone and meds And had to return following week. Cost over $200 and my dog in pain. Owner is dishonest and never told me she cut my dog. Don't take your dog here you don't know what can happen to your dog. I could only post by giving a star but this groomer does not deserve any stars. read more

We had more purrfect experiences at Paws & Claws with Alicia and Rosa. My 19 year old girl, Sally, had her comb-out, ear cleaning and pawdicure on 2/18. Sally was very happy with her services and is comfy with her groomed and smooth fur. The week before my Hello (Kitty) had her pawdicure, the week before that Milo had his pawdicure. Eventually our newcomer, Blondie will be a client too. She's still little and kind of lets me clip her claws. Alicia and Rosa are fantastic and we won't go elsewhere. read more

We used to take our dog Bruno here and he always had the best time. He unfortunately has a bad back and has to be separated from other dogs now so we're not able to bring him here. Otherwise, we would still be taking him to paws and claws. Bruce, the owner, was beyond kind to us when we boarded Bruno after my son was born - dropping Bruno off for us at another boarder when the P & C was closing for a weekend and generally taking great care of him for those couple of weeks! The staff was always very nice and welcoming. If you have a pup that wants a great day care experience, take them here! They'll be well taken care of! read more

We were looking for a good salon to take our two Himalayan cats Suki and Sasha, I because their fur had become too long and matted on their backs. We had to wait because previous groomers were not able to handle both of them; claiming that Suki, our girl, got too upset. (The nail trimmer we take them to never has any problems with her.) I found Paws and Claws online and called to inquire. I spoke at length with a guy who transferred me to Rosa, who I believe is one of the cat groomers. She answered all of my questions and said they could take them no problem, but unfortunately the first appointment, which was going to be with Alicia, was a month out. We booked it and waited. The day finally arrived and my husband helped me trap them for our noon appointment...only to arrive and have Alicia tell me that the appointment was booked only for Suki, not for Sasha; and their next available appointment was in another month. I was livid! It was my lunch hour plus they both needed hair cuts really badly and we had waited a month already. (Not to mention we have to trick them because they see the carriers and HIDE, thinking they're going to the doctor!) We were planning to do the whole grooming process for both of them, but Alicia said if we only wanted the knots cut out and a trim instead of a full shaving and the rest of the grooming procedures, she could take both of them before her next client. This was a great compromise so we agreed. Hubby and I went for coffee and Alicia called when they were done. Suki messed on herself because she was so nervous, but Alicia cleaned her up and did a great job with both. She even trimmed their nails and didn't charge for that due to the mix-up. She had stated that their fur would look choppy but they didn't look bad at all. I was actually very pleased with how they turned out and gladly gave her a nice tip for taking them both for us. Paws and Claws is the best pet boarding and grooming spot in the City. Our family were loyal customers for several years with the pups coming for boarding and grooming. The owner, Bruce, treats his customers like friends and the dogs like family. We moved out of town and can't imagine we will be able to replace Alicia and Rosa as groomers or Bruce and his level of care and service. Updated Review: There are very few businesses who treat their customers as family - and in a city where there are no shortage of options for pet-services, Paws and Claws set themselves apart by always treating our fur friends as their own. This business is clean, safe, and truly values building long-lasting relationships with their customers (and the humans who drive them to and from appointments). We adopted our two cats back in 2008 and immediately began taking them to see Alicia. In no time at all, she came to know them, understand them, and quickly proved herself to be some kind of a cat whisperer. Each time our cats came home, they were well cared for, happy, calm, and most importantly well groomed! We are relocating out of Chicago and will no longer be able to patronize this business. But I cannot say enough how much we are going to miss Alicia and this wonderful business who took such good care of us - all of us - for so many years. read more

2020 Edit: My dog, Ashley, was a regular at Paws & Claws from a puppy at 2012 until about 2018. She loved it there. I actually didn't realize how much she loved it there until I moved outside of the vicinity and tried a different daycare. I pick up Ashley from this other place and she immediately finds a place to go to the bathroom. We get home and she immediately hits the water bowl like she hasn't seen one in days. We get to their front door and she pulls on the leash. The first day I took her to this new place, I told her, "Ashley! We're going to a place like Paws & Claws! Remember Paws & Claws?" This was 3 years after her last visit. She wagged her tail like most dogs do when you speak in a high voice, but I was shook: we go outside and she saw a white van, like the one that used to come by and pick her up. SHE BOLTED towards that van! She loved Paws & Claws so much she remembered the color of the van that used to pick her up. Every white van we passed on our walk towards the new place, she thought it was Jay or someone to pick her up. Paws & Claws showed me what a caring doggie daycare is like, and my dog communicated to me that she was being mishandled at this new place. Ashley LOVED everyone at Paws & Claws, and they absolutely took care of her. I wish I lived closer to Paws & Claws, because they're the best daycare/boarding facility I have ever encountered. Original 3/31/2014 post: My dog loves it at Paws & Claws. They have gone out of their way to accommodate me, and I can't believe any of the other reviews. My dog has been going here for almost 2 years now, and I haven't had any problems. Benefit #1: Taxi Service. When she was a puppy, she would go every day. When I found out they had taxi service, and would pick up and drop off my dog, in her crate, every day, I was so grateful. I work downtown, so any time I can cut off of my mornings means I can sleep a little later. Benefit #2: Complimentary Baths I don't know if this is a normal thing, or if I'm just lucky, but I leave my dog to be boarded at least once per month. When I go away for a longer period, she always comes home so clean and white. I haven't had to even clip her nails in the longest time, which is good because I'm so afraid I'll cut into her quick. Benefit #3: Attentiveness Within the first 2 weeks of her day care, when she was just a 4-month old puppy, I got a phone call from Linda saying that she was playing with another dog and was bitten on her head. They took her to the vet and she got one stitch. Paws & Claws covered the cost, completely. It wasn't a very deep or large cut, and I bet other places would have just dropped her off and said, "You should take her to the vet." Benefit #4: The staff When I walk my dog to be boarded, she starts freaking out when we get within 2 blocks of Paws & Claws -- pulling me and jumping around excited. In the mornings, whenever they come to pick her up, she freaks out more for them than she does for me when I come home! The staff all love her, and she doesn't cower away from anyone. That tells me that even when I'm not around, they are treating her well. That's a big plus for me. All in all, I can't imagine taking my dog to any boarding/day care provider than Paws & Claws. I honestly believe that Paws & Claws will be part of my decision making whether to move or not, when I get to that point. When you find a great place, you don't want to leave it. We (the pup and I) love Paws & Claws! I had to go on a week-long international trip when my newly adopted puppy was only about 3 months old. After hemming and hawing about where to board him, I decided on this facility. After speaking with Jay to learn about Paws & Claws, I felt immediately comfortable and sensed that he truly cared about the dogs. We had a 10 minute temperament test (since this is a kennel free facility) and although he was a bit nervous at first, he passed! Jay handled the immunization records and within minutes my pup was set up for his long stay. As if I wasn't already confident that we chose the right place, Jay was so great about communication while I was away... Sending pics regularly, giving us updates via messenger, etc. Although there was a major time difference, Jay was quick to find a good time for us to check in via phone. Very disappointed in grooming by Rosa. My dog left with a very amateur looking cut - way too short (when I specifically said to NOT shave him), choppy and completely raggedy. Terrible shape on snout and ears. Body is all rough with longer patches here and there. Ears didn't even look as if they'd been washed. In March, shortly before the pandemic, another dog at Paws & Claws bit my dog. It was an actively bleeding puncture wound when I showed up to get her. They said no one saw it happen. No one knew how it happened. Had I maybe brought her in like this? (I'm sorry, what?!) They have cameras, but it was never mentioned that they would be reviewing the tapes to see what happened. They seemed uninterested in finding out which dog bit her. This was disconcerting to say the least. How was I supposed to be expected to feel comfortable ever bringing my dog back to that environment? The agreement I signed states that if this happens, they will contact the owner who is responsible for the medical bills. However, when this happened, I was told that P&C would not contact the owner. That they wouldn't make the other owner pay for it (as if I was terrible for suggesting it). If it were my dog that had done the biting, I'd want to know and remedy the situation. I was never informed as to whether they determined what actually happened or if the dog who bit my dog was removed from daycare. P&C said that they would pay my medical bills ($270), which I sent to them. They said they would refund the $360 I just put down for daycare since I did not feel comfortable bringing my dog back considering the circumstances. I never heard from them again. read more

We started bringing our 9 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback here and couldn't be happier. Our boy is a bundle of energy and a quick afternoon walk wasn't quite enough. What a great place to take a dog for daycare!! My poor Ava passed last month and we went to Petsmart for 10 years and while no complaints, nothing spectacular. I just adopted a very scared and nervous puppy from CACC so I though I would try a neighborhood doggie day camp. A couple points about Paw & Claws: 1) Had to carry Cassidy in the first day, almost jumped through the door on the second visit. She loves this place! 2) Cassidy is not house broken so having an outside area for her to play in and do her business reinforces her potty training. It has been a big help. 3. The staff is great! Bruce just took over ownership at the end of last year and Alicia, Jay, and the rest are just the greatest. You can tell they really care about the dogs in their charge. 4. Did I mention the outdoor area?? Watching the pack play together and interact with Cassidy is really something. She needed socialization in a bad way and she now just loves playing with other dogs, not something she was into before we started coming here. Cassidy really is family here and I can't recommend Paws & Claws enough. read more

We LOVED Paws & Claws. We brought out dog Edith here for daycare and grooming for a couple of years, until we moved out of state. Edith was always SO excited to go to P&C and never looked back when I'd pick her up at the end of the day, she was SO happy and exhausted. She loved the people who work there and they loved her back. Grooming was always perfect and she looks so pretty and clean. We also used the overnight care and they were so accommodating on short notice, like when I went into labor at 5 pm on a Saturday night. They wait for us to drop her off before closing and I didn't have a single worry about Edith while we were preoccupied. I wish we could find a daycare as wonderful as P&C where we live now. Bruce and Jay were so loving and caring, as are all of the other staff. We miss them so much! read more

THE BEST! I have been bringing my 3 yr old lab/ pit mix, Johnny, to Paws and Claws for daycare 2x's a week for about 2 months now. They were recommended by our neighbourhood dog friends when we moved into the area about a year ago and we had been on the waitlist* for their daycare until this past June. Boy oh boy was it worth the wait! FIRST IMPRESSION: On our first day, they started off with a temperament test. The owner himself, Bruce, came out to give me a tour, administer the test and answer all of my many questions and concerns. He was fabulous! (I had tried 3 other dog daycares in the area and they were all terrible experiences, so before P&C, I was driving 45 minutes to K9 University in Garfield Park for his daycare.) STAFF: The P&C staff is attentive, caring, and total dog lovers. They are mindful of what dogs they accept into their daycare and really ensure each dog is a good member of the pack. They learn the quirks and personalities of each dog, which really puts my mind at ease. I know with my whole heart that Jay and the other staff treat Johnny as well, if not better, than I do. Johnny does a total full body excited butt shake the second he walks in the door and see's Jay.. it melts my heart! When I pick him up, I also love getting my little daily recaps of what my boy was up to that day, and he comes home exhausted. FACILITY: When it comes to daycare, my biggest must have's are an outdoor area where he can romp around and absolutely no crates. Their outdoor space is a perfect size. It's smaller than our previous daycare but gets the job done. The facility is quite 'no frills' compared to our previous daycare. However, the pro's totally outweighed the cons, and let's be honest.. dog's don't care about the frills! Bruce's goal is to make the space very 'homey' for the pups. It's crate free and there are even little daybeds for them to lay on. They can go inside and outside throughout the day and there were absolutely no signs of Johnny being stressed when I picked him up on his first few visits... good sign! VALUE/ CONVENIENCE: The price point is better than I have found anywhere in the area for the quality of care. When you purchase your first package, they give you an additional 15% off discount. So, his first 20 daycares came out to about $18/ day. You can't beat it. The location is so convenient as well. I don't have to make an appointment for daycare.. which is amazing for the days I am running late and can't exercise Johnny before work..I'll just walk him over to P&C! I can't recommend this place enough. The P&C staff will become your family and your dog's favorite place EVER. *their waitlist is really dependent on your dog's size, which I appreciate! They have a limit of how many large dogs they will accept at a time. It really shows that they are in it to provide a good experience for the dog, and not just to make as much money as they can. Don't let it deter you from giving them a call to see if they have availability! read more

Oh Paws and Claws you are always my hero! I used to be able to afford to take my dog (who I love and treat as my child) here every Friday. Sadly due to economic turns I can't do it as much. BUT any time I need to board him or want him to have a little play time they are always welcoming and everyone knows him. I have left him here for a week (while I was getting married) and he was on antibiotics and they happily took care of him as if he were there own. I always feel comfortable and have NEVER had a problem with him there. I NEVER question the care and NEVER feel bad leaving him there. To be honest he loves it too always running in and sometime forgetting to say good bye to his dear old mom. I love Paws and Claws and recommend it. read more

If i could give negative stars I would...I have been waiting to write this review in hopes that they would change the situation. I also know how harmful a negative review can hurt a business and wanted to make sure nothing was going to change. I left my dog there for the first time a couple months ago. I took a tour of the place with my dog first before boarding him there and felt very comfortable. I was also excited that they would drop off my dog after his stay and he would be at home waiting for me. When I got home and saw my dog after his stay it was extremely upsetting. He had a puncture wound in his snout that is now a SCAR. He had little scabs all under his armpits. He had a disgusting discharge coming out of his genital area. He was a complete and total mess. I called the people at Paws & Claws to ask them what happened to my dog. They said hold on let me ask, and replied he had a great time. I explained to them all the things that had happened to him and what I was seeing, and they couldn't have cared less. They said "that's weird" and offered nothing. I explained I was taking the dog to the vet and they again did not care. They offered no explanation, and totally blew me off. I took my dog to the vet and he had to be put on 3 different meds. Now I understand dogs will play, bite, fight, etc., but it was the complete lack of concern the workers and OWNER this place gave me. The scabs under his arm were from something he picked up there and reacted to. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE, THE OWNERS DON'T CARE AND WILL NOT EVEN BOTHER TO PRETEND TO BE CONCERNED WITH ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DOG. Frankly, they should not be in business. read more

Paws and Claws drives me a little crazy. While the staff there seems to be generally friendly and into dogs, the owners (who also work there) are a bit undependable at times. On a few occasions they've failed to open on time leaving me sitting out front, or worse, forced to take my dog back home. Due to this unreliability I don't take my dog there too much any more. I know things happen and no one can be 100% on top of it all times, but for this type of business - where dogs are dropped off so the owners can get to work on time - it's crucial to be punctual. This has happened to me now at Paws and Claws enough to know I can't rely on them but what really put me over the edge is that I made an appointment once to drop my dog off when I was leaving town and they just didn't show up - leaving me freaking out and stranded. In all of these situations I called their number repeatedly and just got the answering machine. On the occasions that they did call back it was considerable later and no sort of apology was offered. Seems kind of strange for a place that boards your pet to be out of contact. I'd expect someone to be available t all times. It's also my understanding that when you leave your dog there overnight the only person looking after them is the tenant in the apartment upstairs - not even an employee. Sorry, but that worries me. Maybe that has since changed. One one occasion my dog came home with a wound on his nose, which he obviously got in in some tussle. The guy working there said he thought "he had it when he came in". This also bothers me. You should be able to trust someone to either look after your pet close enough to recognize if they've been injured, or to tell you the truth if they've been involved in a fight. These issues aside I think they provide a good service. The dogs have a really good time there and are allowed to play until they're wiped out, and the owners of the business at least seem to be "dog people". That said, I wouldn't rely on them to always meet your needs if you need, say, to get to work on time - like most people using dog day care. And certainly if you are on a schedule and you absolutely have to be somewhere on time, (like the airport!) I'd go somewhere else. One other thing. When we signed up with them they took our credit card information. Turns out they don't even take credit cards (or at least didn't the entire time I used their service). I file this one under "WTF!?!". ------------------------update 09/02/09------------------------------- Called them recently, during a crisis, and was told they no longer take walk-ins. I assume that they still do. They must, that's their job. It's what they do! Perhaps they didn't like my review here, or maybe they're just too busy to take in more dogs, I don't know. This review is a long time coming, I've been taking my pup Roscoe here for about a year now. He usually goes to daycare at least once a week and he has also boarded with Bruce and staff and it's been amazing service all around. First of all they offer taxi service pick up and drop off for $4 each way which is pretty cheap in my book. I enjoy a happy hour after work sometimes so knowing I don't need to run back to pick up my pup is extremely convenient. Also the guys who come pick up the pups are wonderful. Roscoe is so happy to see them every time they walk through the door Alicia works the front desk and every time I talk to her she is so sweet and extremely helpful. Roscoe and I don't have a set schedule so I can always call ahead and schedule him to come in and they accommodate him, no questions asked. If you are looking for an affordable, reliable and convenient daycare/ boarding place, paws and claws is for you. I took my cat here for a simple nail trim. I spoke with Rosa on the phone to make the appointment and Rosa also did the nail trim. I was a little worried that my difficult cat would have an issue coming here with the doggy daycare noise but Rosa took care of the nail trim right up front by the register. Rosa did a great job. My cat was unfazed and it was done in less than 2 min. The nail trim was $15 and well worth it. Staff here seem friendly and I was able to get an appointment easily. I have taken my three dogs to Paws and Claws 3-4 times over the past two months for boarding. Our experience has been good overall, probably not the best doggie daycare I have taken them to, but still does the trick. With three dogs, they have their own "doggie daycare" at home every day, so we don't feel the need to take them to romp with other dogs unless we are going out of town. I do have issues every time I try to get in and out of the place. The front door is locked, which I can understand for security reasons, but the doorbell outside doesn't seem to work, and there is a phone number posted. While juggling three big dogs, their 10 lbs of dog food for the week plus my own crap, I am not able to easily whip out my cell phone to call the people inside. Therefore, I turn into the crazy lady banging on the window for someone to buzz me in before my dogs drag me down Western. Maybe its just the time I usually drop them off (7:30 am), but it seems like I am always waking the staff up when I come by. Actually I think I woke them up last time too, and that was on a Sunday at 5 pm. That said, the dogs come back in one piece and are exhausted, so we'll be back - mainly for the convenience factor. read more

I hate leaving my cat when I go on vacation, and in the past I used to get someone to drop by every day to feed her. This drove her a little batty, as she is a very social kitty. When I would get home from vacation I would be greeted by a clingy and neurotic kitty. No more! Now I just drop her off with the fine ladies of Paws and Claws and worry no more. When you board your cat here, they send her home with a family so that she has constant attention and care. No more worrying that your plants will be destroyed while you're away, or worse that she did something stupid and got herself hurt. I have never been turned away by Paws and Claws, and rest easier knowing that my cat is safe. I also appreciate that despite Scarlett visits them only a few times a year, they always recognize her. I took my dog there to get his nails cut. Since he is a rescue, he has severe anxiety being separated from either me or my bf and places with other dogs freak him out, the groomer was great and came out into the little lobby to cut his nails there away from other dogs and with me being right next to him. There was only a little trouble with the payment: Apparently there wasn't enough change for $20 on their side so we had to bother the convenient store next door. But other than that, Monroe and I left very happy and will come back soon. read more

I had another awesome experience with the team from Paws & Claws. In planning for a trip to Mexico, I wanted to keep "my kids" in the comfort of their own home and routines. I reached out to Paws & Claws and yet again was completely satisfied with the outcome. After weighing my options (boarding, pet sitter, etc.), I made the choice to have someone come into the house and stay with the kids. Enter a young woman by the name of Meeghan (from Paws & Claws); she was qualified, committed, compassionate, trustworthy and dependable. And most importantly, all three of my kids (two dogs and one cat) immediately took a liking to Meeghan. Paws and Claws is a very caring and professional agency. Everyone I have spoken with here is professional and knows my dog by name. My puppy, who is very social but has a bit of stranger anxiety, gets SO excited whenever he sees Sandy. I really wish they would accommodate email or text walk-requests, but they do not charge extra for weekend or day-of requests. That fact alone is brilliant. $12/walk is a competitive rate and I know that they are extra attentive to Oliver during that time. I've never boarded him, but frequently have them do in-home care while I'm away and that has always gone well. What more can I say? This is agency has a small and personal feel and I feel comfortable letting them into my home and trusting them with my pup. read more

Well, would you believe that? It looks like they didn't send the check after all! Wow! But, she finally admitted it, and had me come in to pick up the check. Of course, I cut the check for $350, and used just over half before they kicked me out of their good graces, and, rather than give me the unused portion (or $140), they graciously gave me a check for $86. I had in-home cat visits for months with Paws & Claws while traveling internationally with work. The shortest time frame I had for visits was ~4 days, the longest was upwards of 2 weeks. I chose Paws & Claws at the start because they offered every-other-day visits - one of the few to do so - and I had a neighbor who was willing to peek in and make sure my kitty was ok (though said neighbor wasn't cool with scooping poop & feeding). So I figured I'd save a bit of money. At the end of the year, Paws & Claws said they no longer served my area so I had to find a new provider. In retrospect I'm glad they did as I'm happier now with a new service. Paws & Claws was just my first time using such a service so I didn't have my expectations well-calibrated. The deets: - You give them a couple keys, in return they visit at your requested times for feeding, poop-scooping, and play time - total of 30 minutes. - They fill out a log-book describing what they did. - They charge your credit card after the fact. The good: - The every-other-day visits can save money, though I've since found a visit provider whose daily price a little more than half of Paws & Claws prices, so it's not that much more expensive. - Payment by credit card is nice. - No special weekend rate, it's the same flat rate. The not-so-good: - Unlike other providers, they don't send a daily confirmation of their visit. Since I was gone for a week or more at a time, this meant I didn't have peace of mind. Other providers will also send pictures, text updates, etc, through a service designed to do so while protecting the privacy of their sitters. Not the case here. - Other providers offer more or varied services, though of course they might bump up the fees for it. The bad: - One time they apparently missed a visit, or at least the log book was dated that way. So my kitty potentially went 3 days without litter box cleaning, or additional food. But I had no way of knowing until I got back from my trip. I was upset, and Bruce's "fix" was that on my next trip, he'd send me a text after each visit to confirm it. But only for that trip. So then I had to trust they were doing it for future trips. I didn't see any more problems with totally missing appointments, but it was hard feeling comfortable. - One time I returned and my cat's water bowl was bone-dry. I have no idea how long she went without water. Now I have a half-gallon sized tank above the bowl that I would've expected would be filled, so the "we only come every other day" excuse wouldn't fly. This was for their final set of two-week visits so at the time I didn't say anything. Pretty disappointing. read more
