My parents have brought their dog here before but have tried a few other places since. I feel they do a good job and are efficient. We dropped her dog off and she was done in an hour and a half. She was washed, trimmed, nails and looking pretty for $65. Since she hadn't been in a while, I was nervous we would get scolded and a lecture but they were nothing but pleasant. 100% improvement and her dog was happy when she arrived and when we picked her up!!!!! read more

The owner does a wonderful job with my Ragdoll cat! It is difficult to find someone with experience with cats. My cat is feisty but she has no problems with her. I can't seem to keep the mats out of my cat's fur and she shaves them out without it looking bad. I've never bathed my cats before but I did this last time and her fur is so soft! Took my 9mo old puppy in for a nail trim. They said they accept walk-ins. She had to stop grooming another dog and hurried through cutting my dog's nails. She cut into the quick on one and made her bleed so much they had to dip her paw in something to stop blood. Then let her jump off table nearly hanging herself. The groomer was very rough with her. So much so another employee tried to "help out" after seeing what was happening. 2 weeks later most of her nails look like they weren't even done!! Never going back. read more

We've been taking our dog to Paws & Claws for five years and they have always been very accommodating. He has some different fur and they provide a nice trim without giving him the "summer cut". When we have taken him back to clean up his face they are always willing to make it better. read more

my vet told us that our dog (long haired German Shepard) needed to have his fur shaved because he is very big and long double coated fur, and is over heating and panting a lot. He was not concerned with his weight. Owner of the place balled me out and said he is just fat he needs to lose 30 pounds. She said we are bad dog owners and he needs to go on a starvation diet. she said he is going to look ridiculous. After his grooming and shaving he looks wonderful. Not a bit over weight. I cried all afternoon with worry about it. Never would I recommend this place. I'm sorry for the gals that work for her. read more

Very disappointing experience! They quoted me $70 for grooming for a German Shepherd, knowing that my dog was an 85 lb German Shepherd dog. Not only did they take an hour longer than they said they would to groom him, they surprised me with a charge $20 higher than quoted. Their only explanation for the discrepancy was that he was "a very large dog". This is unacceptable as they knew what breed and size dog he was when they quoted the price. Some of his back nails remained rough. I would not recomend this salon. read more

I took my 9 YO Golden in for a bath and contour cut. My appointment was at 2p and by 5p, I still hadn't heard back. I called up there and the answering machine said they were closed and I count not leave a message. I frantically drove up to Paws and Claws to find the owner on the phone and another lady breaking down boxes. She tells me they were not done w my dog (3.5 hours later ) and asked me to step outside and they'd bring her to the front and finish her up. After 15 minutes I peaked in the front window and the owner was quickly shaving my dog. The result was piss poor. I called to give feedback and I was told the owner would call me back and she never did. read more

Can't say enough about the care and quality of their treatment of our little guy. Always kind and careful, and reasonable fees. We usually just get claws trimmed and dremeled, occasionally do ear cleaning and/or butt glands expressed. It's not the most pleasant day out for your dog, but in our experience their care makes these trips painless. read more

there are so many groomers out there, skip this one and read reviews! I took my 1 yr old dog here for the second time, and a girl with blonde hair and tattoos is who worked with my pup. Milo came home and was dunking from his dad and I, crying/yelping to our touch & completely not himself. We called the next morning and my boyfriend talked to the owner, she said she was there the whole time and nothing happened. I got home from work and still couldn't pet Milo without him crying. I took him to the vet on cork st. and came home with 2 medications and they told me he has swelling and inflammation leading to discomfort in his neck and back and they're treating him for a soft tissue tear. I've called and got my name and number taken down and was told I'd be called back by a manager. No surprise I never was so I called the next day and left a message. Unfortunately my schedule hasn't worked to where I can make it in there but they need to know what they did and so does everyone else. read more

The ladies did a GREAT JOB on my my dog Archie. He is a 5 m/o standard golden doodle with a lot of very coarse fur. When I picked him up, I didn't recognize him and asked "who's dog is that?" I'm incredibly disappointed in my last visit here after being a customer for 7+ years. I set an appointment for Monday with a young lady who did fantastic with my 13 year old cat last visit. I asked that she be the one to groom him again, and she said she would be there. Fast forward to today. My appointment was scheduled for 1:00. I dropped him off at 12:50. The owner was the one who checked me in. She couldn't find my information in the Rolodex so I explained what he always got for a cut.. then I left. Typically his groom only takes 1 hr max, even less at times. I was getting a little curios as to why I hadn't yet received a call, so I stopped back in at 2:30. I asked the progress. The owner said she had started him, but needed about 15 more minutes. (I got a bit of anxiety because she said she was going to get him done... so my lady I requested was not working and was not told this). So I said ok. Then changed my mind and walked back in and asked for my cat so I could just leave. She said again she could get him done in 20 min after she finished another dog.. She told me she had already given him his bath. I told her I never asked for a bath and I never give him a bath. I told her I just wanted him and wanted to leave. So she went back to get my cat. Low and behold my cat was never even touched. Not damp not wet not cut nothing she said was true. After taking a half day off work, and after 2 hours, no result. I get that you may be busy, but as a business owner, setting expectations is necessary, and this didn't happen. I will never take any of my animals here again. Unfortunately Battle Creek Paws and Claws will not get my business either since it's the same owner. I wish I knew the young lady's name who cut his hair the last time. I'd pay her premium price if she wasn't with this business. read more

I have gone her for a while now, and all their cuts were fine. no real Comair as my Shih Tzu usually gets shaved down. but my most recent visit was appalling, and my dog left with a gash on his arm, still bleeding. they applied liquid bandage on him, saying it was "Not that bad." Upon getting him home, I found blood on my hand where I was holding him. They did state that they would cover any Vet bills needed for him however. But the salt that he has been going for so long and still they had no idea who he was and dismissed his injury so easily is unforgivable. I will not be returning, and express a word of caution to anyone seeking g a groomer. read more

They are careful. They are the best.. The best groomer we have been too. My dogs cried all the way there because they dont like car rides but they slept all the way home.. They know and understand that our animal are not just our animals they are our children and they need to be grommed too just like humans do. They took all 4 of my pugs in today and took care of their nails,their nails were so bad that they were getting stuck in the carpet and were having trouble walking and i called them on sunday and they called us forst thing Monday and they said of course bring all 4 in and we will take care of them and they did. They are great. They were sweet and kind especially to my pug that has cancer with tumors. They took great care of my babies. The prices are very resonable. Been meaning to write this review. We recently adopted a Siamese kitten that had severely matted fur. We had already tried another groomer who said she was too bad for them. They recommended she go to a vet & be sedated. We called Paws and Claws and they fit us in the same day. They charged a very fair for the severity of the situation. It was actually the same price the other groomer had quoted without understanding how bad the kittens mats were. They bathed her, did her nails , and shaved her. She looks beautiful (and a little funny!). I highly recommend, and they will be seeing us again for our dog & cat! read more

I have a ginormous 8 month golden retriever puppy and they sure did an excellent job washing, trimming, and brushing him out. He smelled horrible and even after I wash him he stinks but it's been 5 days since he was there and he smells good still! No more stinky dog that sheds less. They even had knowledge about not shaving him yet since his fur is not in all the way yet. I was concerned about the pet parrot they have. It's looks stressed and is pulling its feather out. Probably not a place the bird feels comfortable and needs to be covered at night too. read more

My mini goldendoodle was due for a grooming appointment and I decided to rebook here due to he first time being absolutely amazing. Upon arrival I was quickly told that my dog has a couple mats in his fur. For his coat, this is common and not usually a burden. This groomer shaved my dog down in the middle of a Michigan winter. Not only that, but even with him being shaved down, he's still patchy and uneven! I expressed my displeasure with the service provider, Nikki, and she reached out to the owner for my refund request. Julia, the owner, reached out to me to basically say "oh well it's your fault" and when I asked her for a refund she had the audacity to say "you received a discount, if I were there the charge would've been $90". I have complete distrust of this company and the way my dog looks I'm just wondering now if they treated him bad. It's frustrating that I paid $70 ($65 with $5 tip) before they brought my dog out to take home. I do not recommend this place at all. Please look elsewhere, it's worth the wait. read more

After a traumatic experience at our last groomer, you can imagine how elated I was to pick my big dog up who was not only groomed beautifully, but he was so happy and in great spirits! As a 100lb dog with matting tendencies, I know he is a big job to groom, and the girl who performed the work was kind, helpful and loving to my pup while he was in her care (and she was so tiny working on such a large dog lol). I wish I had caught the name of the groomer I had today so that I could give her proper Kudos! I took Rasta in for a shampoo and blowout/blowdry. He's a Maltese/Poodle mix who doesn't like to be brushed. AT ALL! She did a beautiful amazing job! I could not believe it was the same dog. She did everything I asked and the price was half what I expected. I honestly had reservations about going to a new groomer, but I need not have worried. Rasta was in great hands! Paws and Claws 5715 S Westnedge Ave Portage, MI 49002 Took our orange tabby for a shampoo, nail trim & teeth cleaning. The groomer said a shave prior to bathing was needed due to matting. No problem as we wanted a lion's cut anyway. For an additional $18, we expected a quality cut. I could've done a better job! We expected a smooth shave but it's so uneven & choppy-looking, I would've been embarrassed to send a pet home looking like he did. I chose not to contact the business as the groomer seemed a bit put off when we said how we wanted the cut to look. Had a feeling she wouldn't be pleased with our critique and wanted to avoid any argument. I will never return to or recommend this business to any pet owner. If they have been open for 30 years, maybe it's time to consider retirement. read more

We have used them before for grooming and they did an ok job but haven't been the friendliest. My son dropped our dog off there to have his nails trimmed and then returned him home. When I walked through the back door there was blood all over my laundry room and kitchen floor and all over the white carpet in the living room. I discovered that the groomer had cut his toenails way too short on his foot causing them to bleed. I called them to find out what I was supposed to do to help him and to get the bleeding to stop. I was put on hold for a while and then I was told to put flour on his foot which was quickly corrected by another employee in the background that it should be cornstarch instead to get the bleeding to stop. When I asked what I should do if that didn't work I was told, "I don't know, that's not our problem." I then expressed the reason I use a professional groomer to trim his nails is so that this will not happen to him. Her reply was, "What do you expect? We can't be perfect all the time." I expressed I did not have confidence in using them again and the reply was,"I don't care, we don't need your business anyway." So lets all give them their wishes, please don't use their business. (Several reviews on their site have horrific stories of things they have done to other people's pets also). read more

I tried this place out - I have a miniature schnauzer. I brought her in for a routine grooming. I have her groomed every other month (we missed her routine appointment). I dropped her off and when I came back I was charged an additional $25 for a flea bath. First of all I had a hard time believing that she had fleas, given more other dog did not and it was the middle of winter. They didn't even call me and get the ok for the service. When I mentioned these things to them they could have cared less. I never have gone back. Poor business decision on their part. read more

I only took my dog here to get her nails clipped. The place I usually take her has weird hours when they're able to do it so I was looking for a new place. They charged $10, which is average I think but because they were busy and it was snowing out, I couldn't really look at her nails until I got home. I swear they only only trimmed two nails. They are all still too long. They took her into a back room to do it so I didn't even see them cut her nails, but I did think it was suspect that they were gone for such a short period of time. So, now I get to go find somewhere else to pay for her nails to get cut again. read more

I'm visiting Kalamazoo, and my pup needed a last minute bath. After calling around this was the only place that could see him today. Given the extremely diverse Yelp reviews average out to, well, average, I thought I'd be ok. And, actually, I have no complaints about the work they did. My pup looks great, smells great, and seems happy. I would have rated a 4 except for two things. First, $30 seems excessive for a basic bath visit. No scissoring or fancy hair-dos required. I'm used to paying $25 or less, and we've been to groomers all over the country. The second complaint is that here on the business' Yelp page, they offer a 10% discount for first time clients. When I asked about it, the girl that handled the transaction claimed to not know anything about it, and said "she never told us about that." I'm assuming she meant the owner. It seems like a poor business decision to entice customers but not have the staff educated enough to honor the enticements. read more

Very disappointed. The grooming was fine, but they pulled the old 'bait and switch' on us. When I brought my two dogs in I was quoted $39 for one and $49 for the other. They were actually looking at my dogs when they gave me a quote, so they could not have been surprised by the work as in quoting over the phone. When my husband picked them up they charged us over $100 (my husband didn't know what they quoted me so he paid it). Needless to say, we won't be back. read more
