I am so very impressed with our local Humane Society. In a pandemic, they have everything arranged quite well, so that you can help your pet while being safe. This review is for a spay appointment we had in January, 2021. What a way to start the new year! First, the new building! It looks so beautiful from the outside. Clean, well-designed, and you can tell that it is them from the enormous dog statue inside! :) For pandemic spay appointments, you call in and reserve a spot on the calendar when they open the schedule for new bookings. I had to wait over an hour on the phone, but that is because they were closed for almost 2 months, I believe, because of the move. The phone staff were incredibly patient and kind. We drove up on the day of Rosencrantz's appointment, as directed. We waited in line while staff went car to car and ascertained who we were, and put an identifier on our car under the windshield wiper. We filled out the paperwork. Note: Everyone must be masked, and the cat had to be in a hard-sided carrier, per their emailed instructions. The staff members were masked and I felt safe in conversing with them. Then your car gets to the front of the line, and you hand over the carrier. Poor Rosencrantz was so unsure of what was going on! But I digress. At 4-4:30, you drive back and wait in line to pick up your pet. When we were able to get R, the staff member delivering her was very kind and patient with his time, while we asked questions and he gave specific directions. One thing that would have been good to put on the original directions is to quarantine them to a small room for a while, once you get home, and to have fresh litter. Upon reflection, that makes TOTAL sense, but sometimes we don't think ahead. The price was SO reasonable: $40 for a spay, and $20 for 2 vaccines. That price is much appreciated. It is able to be so low because of grants and other funding (thank you!). In all of our interactions with staff, everyone was SO kind and caring. I never felt rushed or had an unanswered question. Had an appointment to take my dog to get spayed since it's half the cost of a vets office. When you get there you have to go in sans dog to check in. I didn't think the people in the parking lot waiting for the place to open were very polite. I was the 2nd car in the lot but other people ran in front of me to check in so I became #4 (not the fault of the Humane Society!). After you check in you go get your dog, but you have to wait until the person in front of you has checked their dog in before you go. Which was kind of a problem in the freezing cold. Especially since I didn't want to lose my spot again to everyone else that was jumpy! My dog was fine after the surgery. She was drugged up so very lethargic but overall everything with the surgery went well. The staff was very nice and friendly. They were talking to the dogs and the people. I wish they would just have a better system to drop off that could be less of a run for it method! read more

I have brought both of my cats and most recently my dog in to be fixed here, and couldn't ask for much more given the price and the staff. My pets had no issues, all healed well, and they even got me in after a cancellation for my dog (I called because I was waiting for a slot to open--our appointment was really late, so I'm appreciative of this change, too). The negative reviews here are concerning. For one, you're taking your pet to a non-profit organization. They are there to help, and that is what they do. There is ALWAYS going to be a risk when it comes to surgery, anytime, anywhere. Of course I don't know the whole story behind the other reviews, but they are unnecessarily scary. You know those people that need to speak to a manager bc their food came to the table 5 minutes after their spouse's food did? Ya...looks like those people are the ones that have left the awful reviews. You're at the humane society, not an all-inclusive pet spa. read more

Brought our 4 month old Kitten here for a simple neuter, dead 3 hours later. Don't bring your pet to this god awful place. Pay the extra money and go to a real vet who knows what they are doing. read more

The Kalamazoo Humane Society is a great place!!! I had two (2) dogs spayed/neutered and the staff was great. The Kalamazoo Humane Society is not a shelter but they offer low cost spay/neutering, a food bank for your animals and a sheltering program for animals of domastic assult. I have brought multiple animals in here for myself and for other people. I am not an employee or a current volunteer for this organization. I have found them to be highly organized and efficient. The volunteers and staff of the Kalamazoo Humane Society provides services to people that would otherwise not be able to afford it. They provide these services in a clean, safe and professional manner in a centralized area. They collaborate with local businesses to provide emergency food relief. I would like to speak to Bart G.. I am a disabled Registered Nurse. First of all I would like to say I am sorry for the loss of your kitten. I feel like your evaluation was misguided. Bart, live things die. All surgery is dangerous. Science has improved the odds. I have seen people go in for a simple operation and die from anesthesia. I have seen children die from sensitivity to medication. Not everyone has the financial means to pay for a vet. The staff and volunteers collaborate to provide the best service they can for the most. They are a blessing to our community. Olivia and Becky Why do you not go volunteer if you have all these wonderful ideas to expand their service. Not even worthy of ONE star! Unfortunately, that's the lowest I could rate them. I scheduled my dog for their low cost neuter program. Given the low price of the procedure, I did expect a lesser quality of service, but not to the extreme that I experienced. When I dropped my dog off, I let them know before hand that I would stick around to keep him calm while they put him down since he's a very large dog and gets nervous around strangers. They said that wasn't necessary. They told me that since my dog was so large, they didn't have a crate big enough to accomodate him after the procedure, so they would do his surgery first, and I could pick him up shortly after. I live an hour away from the shelter, so it made sense for me to just stick around the area. 3 hours after I left there, when I was supposed to pick him up from having his procedure, the doctor finally called. I answered my phone in anticipation of picking up my big guy, thinking he had been neutered and was ready to be taken home. Much to my dismay, the doctor called to inform me that I could pick him up, but they had NOT performed the surgery! WHAT?! He said the dog was too "stressed", so they didn't want to stress him even MORE. Understandable. I appreciated that. But three hours?! That's how long it took just for them to decide they aren't going to follow through with what I paid for? I asked the doctor if I could come back, spend a few minutes with him to calm him, then stick around while they put him under. The doctor said, "if it was earlier in the day, than yes, you could have." Are you kidding me?! I offered to do that THREE HOURS PRIOR to his call!! Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I jumped in my car and went to get him. When I got back to the clinic, the doctor came out and lead me to the room that my dog was in. I opened the door to find my 140 pound dog cowered against the wall growling. Why was he so scared?! He has NEVER acted like that and he is 14 months old. It gets better though... The "room" they had my dog in was COVERED in water, urine, and feces! They left my leash on my dog, so not only was he walking through this disgusting mess, but his leash was dragging through it too! As soon as he saw it was me at the door, he basically lunged into me. He was so worked up and scared, and I still will never know why. I had to grab my feces drenched leash and walk my dog out of the clinic. As soon as I got him in the car, he laid down and did not move or make a peep the entire hour drive home. I even tried giving him some treats, but he wanted no part of them. When we got home, he ran straight into the house and onto "his" couch and just curled up in the corner. He was petrified! He was even snarling at ME when I approached him! If I touched him ANYWHERE, he basically jumped out of his skin! I have had my dog since he was 4 weeks old, he is now 14 months... Never in the time that I've had him, has he EVER acted ANYTHING like this... Why now?? He stayed that way for two days following our experience there... I guess I'll never really know what happened after I left, but I hope no one else has the kind of experience I did. I would encourage anyone considering this place to just research a little further... I know it's cheap, but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and that's a lesson learned for me. I rescheduled my dog at his own vet, which I should have done in the first place. It may seem like a worthy risk to take due to the low cost, but if you can find a place that's even a little more, I'm sure it will be beneficial to both you and your dog in the end. read more
