I took my Bichon Frisée to Pawsperity the other day and the experience for both of us was great. Check in went smoothly where they even showed me a chart with fake fur cut in different lengths to choose the hair length for different parts of her body. My dog is 1.5 years old and was nervous and timid going to the groomer for the first time. I have been grooming her at home beforehand due to affordability. Before her, I had a Bichon for 14 years and tried MANY groomers with him--paid a lot more for him to come home shaved naked, cut, dehydrated, traumatized or with fleas. None of which l found after the Pawsperity grooming. They cut her paws into boots as I wanted, smelled good and was content and tired afterwards. BUYER BEWARE! Pawsperity, formally the Grooming Project was once a great place to take your dog. Good cuts with low prices and it felt good to help a non for profit. Unfortunately that has changed and I found that out for certain today. I have been having issues with this organization's customer service skills since April of this year. Reminders that fail to remind you to bring your dog's shot record. Not inputting the dog's shot record ago after you give it to them the first time so you have to go and get it so you can give it to them again. Losing the dog's paperwork. And what I thought was the the most astounding, having a groomer constantly call my dog by "they" instead of his name, then attempting to enlighten me about gender regarding my dog. But today, after answering specific questions and detailed information about how I wanted my dog groomed, they apparently tossed out all the notes and groomed my Schnauzer like a French Poodle removing all of his whiskers and facial hair. This action was not done by a student but by the student instructor. I believe this is the unspoken protocol. Have a customer that expresses concern about your customer service, just do a botch job on their dog's hair then tell them they can't come back when they complain. That exact same thing happened to another reviewer. The sad thing is their customer service used to be impeccable. I had taken my dog here 2-3 times a year over the last several years, but this last time made me decide not to go back anymore. The idea behind Epec is a good one - teach people dog grooming skills as a useful trade and charge people less for their pets to be groomed by the students. It's like having your dog groomed at a beauty school. The first several times I took my dog she looked great and there were absolutely no problems. She looked & smelled great & they even put a little bandana around her neck. She was bathed & brushed, her nails were trimmed, her anal glands expressed - all for $15! Then the price started to go up and the quality of the services started to go down. My dog came home and kept shaking her head & pawing at her ears. One vet visit later ($55 including meds) I learned that my dog had an ear infection. The vet described it as swimmer's ear for dogs. This happened twice before I realized she was getting water left in her ears at the groomer's, since I don't bathe my dog at home anymore. Meanwhile, Epec had increased their prices to $18. Not too bad, but considering the vet bills . . . I called Epec about the ear problem. They seemed tense, as if they were waiting for me to ask for my money back. I said I just wanted them to be aware of the situation so they could inform the students. My dog, Maysie, is a Pomeranian mix, but she looks exactly like a big overgrown Pom, about 30 lbs. Everyone always comments on how cute she is, as I take her in the car with me frequently. Her fur is about 4" long and red, with the classic fluffy tail and feathery ears. You're normally not supposed to cut a Pom's coat at all, but I had seen some on the web that looked like little teddy bears when trimmed, so last summer I asked Epec if they could give Maysie a Teddy clip. They said there was no such thing and they really couldn't guarantee how she'd turn out, but they'd try. I said to just cut some of the length off then, especially on her chest & legs. Well, that turned out really well. Her coat looked shorter, although one leg was cut shorter than the other, and I had to trim a few loose patches myself. They charged $32 for a full trim. But when I got home I noticed that her pubic area was dark and wet, like they hadn't rinsed it. I got out the baby wipes and they came back dark gray. It took 5 baby wipes to get her clean. They hadn't cleaned that area at all! When I called to tell them about this, again the response was terse. Well maybe the groomer missed a spot when rinsing, the lady said. No apologies. Obviously they thought I was a lady who could not be pleased. When the pandemic struck, Maysie missed her spring appointment. They had already emailed me their new prices, which were going up considerably in August. It was July before I could get her in, & they had to pick her up in the car as a precaution. I didn't ask for a Teddy clip, only if they could take a little bit of the length off. The groomer asked if I wanted to do what they did last time, & said she'd take off about an inch all over. I said that sounded fine. Remember, Maysie's fur was 4" long. When I picked Maysie up that afternoon, I couldn't believe she was the same dog. They had shaved her down to an inch of fur all over. Her right eye was gummy, and she kept her left eye completely closed. I was in shock, & asked the groomer what happened to taking 1" off all over? She said this was the way they did it last time, and how did I want to pay? I just handed over my credit card, still in shock. When she came back with my card, I asked about a receipt, & she said it would be emailed. I asked how much it was, and she said $30 (It turned out to be $32). By the time I got home I was really angry. Maysie still couldn't open the one eye, and her haircut looked really bad. I called Epec and asked for a Manager but ended up speaking to the student who had groomed Maysie. I told her I had pictures of Maysie's cut from the previous visit, and it looked nothing like the current clip. I also mentioned her eye that remained closed, and the student said that hair had probably gotten into it & I should probably wash her eye out with water. (Excuse me, but shouldn't that have been her job?) I told her I wasn't at all pleased and wanted a partial refund. She said they'd be happy to refund all my money, but I wouldn't be welcome to come back again. (Shouldn't a decision like that be made by an Instructor, instead of a student?) Anyway, they issued me a refund, and I haven't taken my dog back since. And not likely to ever again. read more

WOW! This was a great find that is a win for both me and the community. After my last fail with using a grooming Groupon, I found another for a place close to me. The Groupon included the entire grooming package, cut, wash, nails, ears, etc. Being I have short hair dogs, I did not need the cut option. I called to see what options were available and was told grooming without the cut runs $12. WHAT?!?!?!?! Both dogs would cost less than what I normally pay for just the pug! Of course I had to see what this was all about. EPEC is a training program that pays a living wage to people while they learn skills they can then take and find jobs or start their own business. Trainees are under supervision while performing grooming tasks. They also teach life skills that will help the participant find success in all areas. SO, how did the grooming go? Much better than the last groupon at another business. And just as good as any groomer I have used in the past that I was happy with. The boys came home clean and smelling great. You won't get cute handkerchiefs or bows, but come on, for what you are paying and the opportunity you are giving someone, buy your own accessories. Seriously check this place out. Make them your regular groomer. Donate to them. Heck, let's have a Yelp event where we make a bunch of bows and handkerchiefs for them! 10 stars!!! (Shots must be current. Just got off the phone with Amy, an instructor here. The school canceled a weeks worth of appointments with out even trying to get us in before mid March. Extremely disappointed how they handled things. Never tried to get my dog in before even though we've had this appointment for over a month, didn't ask their other location to price match during a pandemic. Meet Inca. Inca is a 70 pound ball of fluff and trouble. Inca has allergies that turn his eyes and skin fire engine red, and leaves him scratching and chewing on himself all day long. Inca has fur that will turn into a giant mat if you look at it wrong. Inca is also deathly afraid of mom trying to bathe or groom him at home. Normally, Inca costs $100+ to be turned back into a normal looking dog. Now that mom is going to graduate school and has literally negative amounts of income, that's just not affordable. Mom tried buying clippers off Amazon and grooming Inca herself. That went terribly. Then mom found The Grooming Project. Inca's last bath and haircut cost $33 after tip. Inca's little older sister, Maya, cost $15 for her bath and paw trim. When Inca only needs a bath in between haircuts, it's also just $15. That's cheaper than daycare, y'all, and they smell way better too. Happy mom. Clean pups. Happy bank account.
