Absolute. Nightmare. I got 5 estimates on a complete fence replacement. Ended up choosing Payless because Ben seemed very personable and had good Google reviews... I learned pretty quickly that I had been duped, and not to always trust Google reviews. There were multiple changes to the start date. Originally 4/21, then 4/23, then 4/28, then 4/30, then 5/5. Communication was poor at best - mostly, it was only when I reached out to him that I learned it was delayed yet again. He offered stump removal as a service for $150/hr. He showed up with a small grinder that was in no way adequate for the large stumps and two day laborers who were in no way skilled to do it. Grinder kept smoking and cutting out, and the guys were trying, but could only shave off parts of the stumps little by little. Ben had left, so I called him and told him to have them stop. He came back and was extremely agitated and argumentative. I asked him to calm down and said we needed to be able to have a normal conversation, but he wouldn't... Why would he bring the wrong equipment and guys who didn't know what they were doing? "That's all Home Depot had," and yelled, "I'm a FENCE guy, NOT a stump grinder guy!" His behavior made me extremely uncomfortable... So much so that I asked if I could just pay him for the one section of fence he took down and cancel the contract. He sneered, "Go ahead and cancel it, but you're not getting your deposit back." Mind you, not one bit of material had been delivered at this point, even though he had said he'd be bringing it and never did... Later, I received a text demanding $225 for the grinder rental before he would proceed with any work. I paid it (regrettably) -- I just wanted him to finish the work and be done... I paid to have the stumps ground by Davey Tree Service. Once he resumed (3 days later) he arrived far later in the day than he said he would - this would prove to be an ongoing issue. There was no fence between me and my neighbors, and I asked him to let me know when he'd be coming so they could keep their dog inside - he didn't do that, either... All of the delays resulted in my having to take additional days off work and cancel a planned vacation. Days later, I finally had ONE section of fence done. The day he was to start on another section, he texted me to say he was "Still figuring out post situation. Going have to go a different route and dig and set 10 ft posts." When I questioned this, as the contract stated that 12 foot posts would be used, he replied, "Also I have to weld up 2 more feet onto 10 ft posts since we are going according to contract, because I'm not spending what they're asking for them." Total breach of contract!! What he did with the $9,000 I gave him, I'll never know... It sure wasn't used to buy materials for my fencing. At this point, I'd had enough - told him not to come back until he heard from me. I needed to speak with my attorney, for sure... I also started doing a bit more digging into Payless Fence (I SHOULD have done this before I hired him and gave him a ton of money - kicking myself for this everyday...) His website had been taken down (he had one when I hired him,) he has NO business license and his LLC is delinquent. Wondering if he's gone out of business, left town, or ??? The old fencing had just been piled up in the alley behind my neighbor's. I asked when he'd be taking it away, heard nothing, texted him back 3 days later, and he said he'd be coming to get it that weekend. He never did. So I called 1-800-GOTJUNK -- $980 to have it hauled away. AND - no pressure-treated rot board on the one section he did, as in the contract. AND he didn't install a gate to replace the old one he tore down, which resulted in a clear opening from the street into the backyard. So I had to hire someone to build and install a temporary gate immediately for security purposes. I'm now in a credit card dispute through my credit union, have sent him a demand letter for what he owes me, and will pursue it in Small Claims Court if there is no resolution. Ben and Lisa did a fantastic job. I'm really happy with the work they did especially since they use the very best of materials. As you can see by their picture in front of the finished work it is sturdy and really looks good. This will serve my purpose of keeping my mated pair of boxer dogs safe. The fence around the backyard was rotting to the ground but we were wary of taking on another large project and the process of finding the right contractor. Ben at Payless Fence Co. turned out to be the right contractor. The wrong ones ignored us or forgot to show up for scheduled appointments. Ben returned my call within five minutes and was ten minutes early for the estimate. He locked in the agreed price and was very thorough in explaining the job. We scheduled for the week of Christmas. Instead of a crew dropped off by a "polo shirt and khakis" salesman, Ben and Lisa arrived on Monday afternoon to start work. Throughout the week, Ben kept us up to date on the progress. By Saturday afternoon, we were ready for the final inspection. The construction was solid and the fence looked amazing. Ben thoroughly addressed our questions and advised us on ongoing maintenance before he and Lisa packed up. When the next big project comes up, Payless Fence Co. gives us hope that there are quality contractors able to do the job right. read more

However, once the fence was installed, it looked so awesome we hired him to replace our existing privacy fence too. Ben did a great job with some custom fencing we required to separate our yard into sections and create a privacy screen from our neighbors. He was very responsive and easy to work with when changes were required. When he had to leave to get material or do an estimate elsewhere, he always let me know what was up and when he would return. He even was affectionate with my silly dogs who always think people are there to play with them. We are happy with our fencing and would use Ben/Payless again in the future. read more

Ben's work is quality and he cares about his customers. What I have seen is large companies can compete a job in record time with large crews, but beware the quality is not what payless fencing is offering, he specializes in fencing and customer service plus his prices are reasonable. Ben and his helper were incredibly good - communicative and reliable. The work was careful and the materials look really great. We had a wobbly fence on one side - it was all over the place, and a gate that needed sorting out. We also had a new pup and were worried that she would be able to bust out of the yard. Now we have a beautiful fence that smells lovely (I kid you not!) and a gate that actually works now. The only problem is that Ben's work makes our other fences look rather disappointing! We'll have to get him back to sort those out when the time comes. read more

I called this company for a quote to fence my front yard which is about 129 feet. It is a simple 32" fence that was to be installed with a small gate. The owner called me and indicated it would be over $5,000.00, which was about $2,000.00 more than the other bids I received. The owner gave me the quote about 30 seconds into the call without previewing the property. I found that to be unprofessional and uncaring. The owner also said that if I paid less for the job the work work be shoddy. The other two companies that I called came to my home, and offered professional advice and even suggestions on how to move the sprinklers so that the fence can be installed with the appropriate setback. I hired one of those companies. Please be careful with Payless Fence and do not be fooled by the name. I think the name of this company should be Pay More Fence. read more

We used Payless Fence Co for a portion of our back 6' fence and an exterior front fence and could not be happier with the quality for the cost. Ben and team were so approachable and followed up during the estimate process. We felt like they really wanted to do the work. We got various quotes and Payless Fence Co was the best for the quality of work promised. And did they ever follow through on their promise! We received a true customized fence and we were consulted with decisions along the way. A few of my favorite thing about Payless Fence... (1) whenever issues arose (apparently our ground was extremely hard when they dug the holes and it took extra time and a lot of effort) they did not complain to us about the issues or say these unaccounted for issues would cost us more money (2) all the posts had ample cement and I am confident our fence will hold up for many years to come (3) the owner was on site working the entire time. My time is valuable and I believe in doing business with people/companies that are communicative and follow through. I had another company lined up for the work and they "went dark". I came across Payless Fence and it seemed that the reviews noted good customer service. Ben and Payless Fence lived up to the great reviews. He was very communicative and met his bid (he didn't go over). I will do business with Ben again and will also give out his name to friends/family/colleagues. He's not the cheapest....but who the heck wants that?! You get what you pay for! His work is priced very fair and what makes it worth every dollar is that he lives to his word and will communicate with you if something comes up.
