Awful..They wont treat small lumps on pets. and tell you to keep an eye in it.My dog had an itchy skin condition they gave him 2 steroids per day for years which swelled up his heart and gall bladder.Then they said they cant operate just euthanize him.They stopped his steroids I bought my dog galapram loratidine hayfever tablets from savers and gave him 2 morning and 2 evening which completely stopped the itchy condition on its own.They could have removed the cancerous lump when it was smaller than a 5 pence piece under local anesthetic but chose not too.The lump took over his whole leg. He is no longer with me .They put my boy to sleep.Its put me off rescuing another read more

Allow to make a point about the PDSA i think needs a rethink , when you arrive at the pdsa you are asked to donate towards your treatment , which is free if you are entitleld to HB and council tax benefit . However not all treatments are free for eg my dog which had a dental problem needed i was told some toothpaste for dogs this i was told was £9 so no treatment is not entirely free or donation based . When i raised the fact that i could not afford this medication with the receptionist i was told well you have had £20 of treatment already and only donated £5 .......... why is it i asked that the amount you donate is not anonymous indeed it is displayed on the vets treatment screen when you are in surgery .Oh she said that doesnt mean anything " . Well i said if it doesnt mean anything why are you using it as an eg to compare it to the amount i donated ? Because if i had donated £100 you wouldnt have used such an eg would you ? She said nothing and refused to hand over the toothpaste unless i had £9 , which unfotunately having already donated the maximum i could afford that day i could not pay so had to leave the medication . So the word donation is really not the case it is not a discreet payment and the amount is clearly visible to the vet that you have donated , it is natural to wonder why this is isnt it ? After all the vet is there to treat your pet and seeing as this is a charity cliinic designed to help those without the means to pay quite why the amount you donate should be clearly evident to the vet is indeed questionable . People that attend clinics such as these are often embarrased that they have not the funds to look after their pet , why then make this more embarrasing by publishing the amount donated by that person to the very vet treating the persons animal , that is without doubt quite quite wrong . You can only conclude that the donation being showed to the vet may indeed detract from any treatment you may receive . read more

I love animals, all animals. My preferred domestic animal is a cat and I had to get mine neutered at a time I wasn't in work. I came to the PDSA and they neutered, tagged and gave him all the injections he needed. I paid a small amount, all I could afford and they really did help me. The PDSA have now started a new scheme that I think that pet owners on low icome should take heed of. The PDSA's PetCheck programme has gained so much exposure and have done so much work that they gave 1300 dogs free health checks and over 2,000 people visited. The PetCheck programme will be running until the end of October with their experienced veterinary nurses not only providing free health checks to dogs but also advice on the care of cats and other pets. I cannot recommend the PSDA Pet Aid Hospital in Aston highly enough, the only annoyance being that although they will treat any animal the free service is only available to people on certain benefits! My friend is on benefits and when her doberman ate something which lodged in his throat she was distraught as she just didn't have the money to pay a vet. A kind receptionist at one vet we visited suggested the PDSA and what a godsend the place has proved to be. My friend and her dog were dealt with in a kind and considerate manner and as her dog had started choking violently by the time we arrived they were whisked through without having to wait in the queue. She saw three vets that day, one of which booked her dog in for an emergency operation to remove the blockage. Within 20 minutes of arrival the dog was being operated on and I'm glad to say he made a full recovery thanks to the skill and lovely manner of the vets and vetinary nurses. I think you have to provide some proof of your benefits to be eligible for treatment, although my friends dog was in such a bad way that they didn't bother her about this and did the necessary treatment on her word. Wherever you live in Birmingham, if you cannot afford a vet to look after your pet then do call the PDSA to check whether you are entitled to free treatment. You will be treated with courtesy and more importantly your dog or other pet will be brought back to good health. As I mentioned earlier, treatment is free although there is a donations box on the wall and I urge you to at least pop a few quid in here to make sure this excellent service continues to help make life better for animals across the city. read more

Our cat Sooty is 10 years old, been a house cat all his life in the same house. Last month we had our central heating replaced, Sooty got scared and hid under a duvet all day. He gets stressed when strangers are near. A week later and we take him to our local vets because he can't pee and is in pain. The local vet ran blood tests, urine tests and took x-rays, but no blockages were found, they suggested it may be muscular spasms normally caused by stress and may need an operation. The treatments he had in this first week completely cleared our bank account, but Sooty still needed attention. So we had no choice but to take him to PDSA in Quinton, Birmingham. My wife is registered disabled with myself as her carer, so we knew fees would not be a problem. Sooty was admitted to the PDSA at about midnight and his medical history was taken in within hours. The vet we saw told us his bladder had to be drained with a catheter before anything else was done. They sent him home 18 hours later with medication for cystitis. More stress for Sooty travelling. The following morning we took him back in the same condition as before. We saw three different vets over the next few days and they all said he was blocked and needed a catheter. When we asked about the operation for muscular spasms they all basically dismissed it and said they want to 'monitor' him for a few days first. They assured us that Sooty was getting pain relief and anti inflammatory's for the bladder muscles. This went on for TWO WEEKS, and they eventually sent him home telling us that he had been urinating normally all weekend and seems to be recovering. After 6 hours poor Sooty is crying in pain and running to his litter tray every five minutes. He still can't pee. His condition is worse as he now has a penis that looks like a small bunch of grapes from the 10 or so catheters he has had. I phoned the out of hours emergency, who checked his file He HAD NOT been urinating alone all weekend, he had to be expressed. and it seems the ONLY medication for the last five days was antibiotics. NO pain relief, NO anti-inflammatory's, NO muscle relaxers. Sooty had been registered in my wifes name at our local vet, so they did the same at PDSA. My wife has epilepsy, and several times was unable to converse on the phone. When I tried to talk to them they were rude and abrupt. Sorry, it's our data protection policy ? Protecting information about our pet cat NO, it's to protect information about the registered persons benefits. I ONLY WANTED INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CAT! I spoke to my local vet the day before collecting Sooty. Her personal opinion was that it may now have gone too far for surgery and we would have to consider letting him go, and that if the surgery was discussed and initiated sooner it was likely to have been a success. We feel that it would be too much for Sooty to be taken back to the PDSA for more of the same 'treatment', and our local vet agrees, so we are now using medication given to us from our local vet hoping that this may help. If it doesn't work, what little money we have left will just about cover the costs of euthanasia at our local vets. Sod the PDSA 'donations'. Our fingers are crossed, hoping the meds will help, but it doesn't look good. My wife is heartbroken. I now have to find a way to tell our ten year old daughter. read more

The first time I went to the PDSA in Aston last year with my father in laws dog she had serious sickness and diarrhoea they refused to see her as my father in law had already registered another pedigree, which OK is not their fault as it is the red tape guide lines Etc But they were so RUDE when they said it Like we was dirt!! The second time my father in laws dog ripped open her side and she needed stitches but they would not do ANYTHING until my father in law went home and bought his other dog to prove it was not a pedigree !! Not only that the woman who bandaged the dog didn't even do it properly!! After bringing his other dog they finally decided they would stitch her up THE NEXT DAY so now she is sat in the house in pain with a big deep gash pouring of blood through a badly wrapped bandage. Also I would like to add I am 7 months pregnant the dog was going crazy with excitement because of the other dogs so she was dripping some blood and one of the staff was mopping under my feet which was really unnecessary as she was still dripping blood. SERIOUS health and safety risk. Another thing, NOT ONE water bowl around for the dogs. I even mentioned to the staff that my dog was really thirsty due to waiting around for hours and they did not care one bit!! The way we were treated in there was absolutely diabolical and the staff are MISERABLE. I wont forget to mention that that day was quiet too!! read more
