When you open the street-level door to the peace and justice center you can start to smell it. I don't care what anyone else says, I love the smell....it's some combo of patchouli, sandalwood, and nag champa. I'm not a hippie, I swear, it's just yummy and nostalgic. The store has a collection of concientiously imported cooperatively made goods from south america and asia, books on activisim & politics, and left calendars and bumper stickers. Definitely stop in if you need hemp clothes, incense, beeswax candles, books on breastfeeding, locally printed calendars, drums for your next drum circle, or a copy of heather has two mommies. Don't go-- or plan to be in and out if you have environmental sensitivities or are right wing. read more

Ah, the VT Peace and Justice Center, a safe haven for all VT queers, dykes, liberals, hippies, and those who just love Peace & Love. THe center is downstairs in a basement level, door is on Church Street. Inside they have all sorts of books and publications, newspapers, and magazines. Music, rainbow wind chimes, hemp products, oils and incense, anti-war tee shirts, COOL BUMPER STICKERS and pro-environment type products. This place reflects and feels like a way society should be. read more

GREAT BUMPER STICKERS! This Church St. basement location sells all sorts of socially and environmentally conscious literature and products, coordinates some activities and the people there are nice. They aren't the look-down-their-noses-at-your-ignorance sort of activists. I am a little weirded out that their kids section only offers "collaborative" games. I think a little healthy competition can be good for any kid, even if their parents are hippies. read more

Full disclosure: I work here, so I'm partial, but even before I worked here I loved the Peace & Justice Store. The aim of the store is to serve as the economic justice project of The Peace & Justice Center. All the products are fair trade and local, so you can feel good knowing that whatever you buy is filled with good karma! Furthermore, the store is a non-profit, and all the proceeds are funnelled directly back to the center to fund programs supporting non-violent communication, fair trade education, activism against weaponized drones, white privilege workshops, and many other awesome things! The next time you're in Burlington, come check us out on Burlington's beautiful waterfront. Even if you're not in the mood for shopping, there is a free public library, lots of resources concerning our work in Vermont, a community board representing all the great things that are happening in the area, and lots of great people (staff, volunteers, interns, and customers!) who are wonderful to chat with. I'm so grateful to the Peace & Justice Store for setting a model example of how a retail business should be run! Located in downtown Burlington, Peace and Justice is a store that offers up an assortment of goods from liberal reading material to some pretty badass bumper stickers, children's games, incense and candles, carved figurines, and paper journals. I got the coolest messenger-style purse from here. It's beautifully handmade and the proceeds went back to the village where the bag was made. I've gotten countless compliments on it. Very cool store! I always stop by here when I am in Burlington. read more

The Peace & Justice store has relocated to the waterfront area -- out of the way a bit, but oh so worth it to go there! The space is clean and bright, and the items for sale are ALL chosen with Fair Trade and support women's cooperatives and local craftspeople too. Even the stories are there with each purchase. I will be doing my holiday shopping there, the benefits are many and satisfaction is guaranteed. read more

Enjoyed perusing the store, and wow, found Kenyan tea here. The sale of the tea goes to provide assistance to orphans in Kenya. Also got a great bag for my yoga mat, made of out recycled (and very stylish) rice bag material. They even had some world music instruments, and lots of small items. I was struck by the reasonable prices of most of the items, and loved the overarching purpose of the center. When you are there, be sure to walk down the Endangered Species hall to see and hear sounds of the jungle. read more

What a great, friendly place with a wonderful mission. Really appreciated the warm greeting we received upon entering. Everything has a country sticker on it to explain where it was sourced--this organization is all about supporting fair trade and local efforts. The diverse goods they sell are all very well-made, and the books section is lovely. Do stop in when you're in the area! read more
