I love donkeys and found this gem in San Angelo Texas. There was no fee to do the tour, but you do have to schedule a tour time in advance. Great value! That was easy to do by just calling. Our guide @cole was very knowledgeable and patient with all of our questions. This is a non profit that was established to rescue donkeys in need and everyone there seemed to love what they do! We saw a baby donkey a few weeks old and an older donkey who was the reason for the rescue to be started and she is still there! There are about 1000 donkeys on this rescue property, so lots to see. I stumbled across a mention in one of those things to do magazines while staying at a local hotel. At first I thought it odd that I needed to book a tour. Was this on someone's property and they wanted to be awake? Set the day and time and headed out there. At some point if you forget you are in texas and everything is a drive and roads may appear to lead to nowhere, don't panic. You will get there and see why. Everyone there is warm and friendly and obviously pationate about where they work and what they do. They are more than willing to answer all your questions and educate you as well. The tour is important and it takes around an hour. They don't take government money which enables them to do what they do with the animals best interest at heart at all times. These animals are well cared for and the staff are really dedicated to them. I suggest at least a donation of $10 per person to help them out. That is a deal for a tour. They also have a souvenir shop that you may want to shop in as well. This place is for anyone that likes animals, seems like a good place for ag students to visit, seniors, families, or anyone literally capable of riding in a cart and following behavior expectations such as not playing in the waste or pulling the tails or smacking the donkeys. PVDR is an amazing place. I can't even explain the feeling of just being in a field of donkeys. It sounds silly but it is just magical. They are so misunderstood and really need help. Education needs to get out about the truth of these gentle animals, they are not anything like they are portrayed. PVDR takes in abused and abandoned donkeys. They rely on donations and take no money from the government. Call them up and go take a tour! The staff is super friendly and full of all sorts of information. You will not be let down. Any time I drive through Texas I plan to visit (I am from LA). Hopefully one day I will have the proper house and area to adopted some of these amazing animals myself. I guarantee you will fall in love with the donkey. Oh and as always they babies are adorable! read more

This place is doing amazing work for donkeys all over the world!! I can't imagine what would happen to most of them if PVDR didn't step-in and do the right thing. I visited them a few years ago and have been anxiously waiting to go back...It was a real treat!! To see how well the donkeys are cared for was wonderful! Donkeys are one of the most misunderstood animals I know. I am so very fortunate to have two of my own. They are complex in a simple kind of way. Their ability to communicate, their sense of humor, and desire for affection, is like no other animal I have been around. Every day is a joy to hang with them!!! These great people run a sanctuary for abused and abandoned donkeys. They pick them up from all over the country and have several satellite facilities all over the country. They pick up donkeys after people contact them and get them veterinary care, feed them and adopt them out if they can to qualified people or they keep them on the sanctuary the rest of their days. Donkeys are so misunderstood and mistreated. They have over 820 donkeys living there and really need all our help. They take no money from the government and rely totally on donations. My wife and I made the 3 hour trip to PVDR to tour their facility and check out their operation. We were greeted by Lori, who was absolutely delightful. Even though they had a lot going on that day, she took time to give us an overview of the rescue's history and mission, then took us around the property to show us how the facility operates and how the donkeys are cared for. While there, we were able to interact with the animals and other staff members who were busy with their taskings. Everyone was friendly, outgoing and really seemed to enjoy what they were doing. All of the animals were happy and were well cared for. I believe that this is my wife's new favorite place. PVDR is doing great things! read more

My son read a book about the Donkeys of Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue from his grandmother. He was so wrapped up in it and we began looking up videos about them and mules. Finally, we had to go. One of their staff, Leah, gave an informative tour. She was so knowledgeable and respectful of my family and the mules and donkeys they care for. The care and work they fo for the animals was stunning and inspiring. She talked about the other rescues they work with in Arizona and Oklahoma as well. I received mail from PVDR and thought .oh no! another donation wanted. Then I read the article about Floyd the donkey and how abused it was and my heart became so sad. I wish we could find these animal abusers and do the same thing to them that they are doing to the donkeys. I can't imagine how any human can be so heartless.
