I went in for 2 bolts to secure supports for my bed frames. Although I had found the right screw size, they were not going in smoothly. My Ace Specialist re-tapped the holes in the supports essentially clearing the threads and creating a really smooth and easy finish to my project. Have always received exemplary customer service here and during the Pandemic, Pearl Hardware has risen to the new normal. Customers wait outside the store, 6 feet apart on the clearly marked yellow Xs; there is a separate line for those picking up prepaid orders. They are limiting the number of customers in the store so once inside, it's easy to get what you need and check out. Note, they are taking credit cards only. Another great precaution they have implemented is that upon entering, everyone is asked to use the hand sanitizer they provide. Thank you, Pearl Hardware! Even though they are located in the Pearl, don't worry about finding or having to pay for street parking; they have their own small lot in front of the store making it super convenient for those of us not in walking distance. Yesterday I stopped in to pick up a 4-pack of aBlind Cord Wraps to keep my cords from banging against the window when the wind blows. Oh the problems I have! Amazing all the little "projects" I'm completing during these days of Quarantine. Or more accurately said, I'm seeking out projects since my house is spotless, appliances are sparkling inside and out, summer flowers have been planted, and closets and drawers have been "Marie Kondo'd" and then some. Pearl carries all of the regular hardware store merchandise and then some, especially in regards to houseware, garden decor and even some home decor items like candles, cloth napkins, trinkets. The variety in each department has more breadth and uniqueness, even whimsical and quirkiness, than your average hardware store. That speaks to me! Yesterday I was so bummed that I couldn't browse and touch and actually shop because as we all know, during the pandemic it's about getting what you need and leaving. Man, did this make me yearn for a day of shopping like in the old days, 2 months ago, pre-March 23, 2020. Paid for my item and left so another customer could enter the store. Going forward, I need to remember that every errand now requires waiting in line and I need to build that into my outing schedule. No more in, out, done. Covid-19 is teaching us Patience, among many other things, during this wake-up call to the world. Today I have at least 15 minutes accounted for on my wide open calendar as I install these blind cord wraps. Grateful. read more

I've been shopping here for 30+ years and probably have spent hundreds here if not thousands...even when I knew I could get a better price at a big box store, came here to support a local business that is within walking distance for me. Staff, for the most part, is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Occasionally, I would over buy on an item or get something that was the wrong thing, etc., but never had a problem with returns. Trust me when I say I try to limit returns as much as possible. Fast forward to a recent visit when I needed some caulk to redo my bathtub. I bought two tubes of clear caulk that were clearly marked "clear". Got home and started caulking. Much to my surprise, the caulk came out white. Oh crap I thought, mislabeled tube. Cracked open the second tube and same thing, comes out white. WTF. Had to stop in the middle of my job and take these back. Shockingly and surprisingly, I got major pushback from the store manager on duty. He told me it comes out white but turns clear. I replied, are you kidding me, I wasn't going to take that chance and by the way, no where on the tube does it say that, I read and re-read it thoroughly. Oh, he said (condescendingly) if you know how (stupid Boomer) you could have Googled it and you would find that information. I'm like, is he serious? Finally, reluctantly and grudgingly, he refunded my money. That was six months ago and I have not been back since. Fuck you guys and your four dollar tubes of caulk. Hope you're happy with my lost business... I added up my Lowe's receipts since then and they total over $1200. Not a big loss for you I understand, but how many other customers have you run off with this business model? read more

This store is amazing. No matter what your problem, no matter how odd, the staff are always willing to come up with a solution. In particular, yesterday afternoon, I wanted to find a way to mount something with a "microphone stand hole" onto my camera tripod. Thankfully, I ran into Charlotte -- an amazing young woman -- who helped brainstorm several different possibilities, consulted with other staff, and came up with an idea that worked brilliantly. She drilled a couple holes (I explained that I just had a little battery drill at home), cut a threaded rod, and apologized that she needed to charge me $2 labor. So now, I have an ersatz (but stable and also affordable) way to connect a theremin to a camera tripod! This is not a unique case -- the staff are always helpful and uniformly great at answering questions, whether it's "what aisle has light switches" or "which glue is best to mount a laminated sign on concrete" or whatever problem you might have. read more

I'm so happy to be able to visit this shop. They have everything I could possibly need from a hardware store, without having to deal with the massive scale (and lack of service) one would get at a place like Home Depot. The service has always been extremely friendly, and having been in here 5 or 6 times by now, I can't think of a single instance where they didn't have what I need. During COVID they're definitely serious. They keep an employee outside to monitor the number of shoppers coming in and out, and masks are mandatory for all. If I recall correctly, there was hand sanitizer by the front door as well. And of course, if you want to avoid as much of the contact as possible, they have online ordering. This place is definitely for city dwellers, as you won't find everything you need to fix a roof or build a fence or whatever it is that suburban people do. But unless you're trying to do something that you should probably be hiring a contractor for in the first place, they've more than likely got you covered. read more

"Ah!", he said, "Aisle 8 near the light bulbs." As it turns out, the helpful hardware man was right. Just the husband I was looking for, buying specialty light bulb to replace one in a reading lamp that went kaput. I got side tracked in gathering mode while hubby was hunting for this bulb. Easy to do here, become a gatherer. Because in addition to having just about anything you can possibly imagine you would need for household repair, they have lots of fun things for nesting. Like Colonial Candle unscented tapers in every color in the spectrum and pure beeswax honey candles from tapers to pillars to votives. Like Joseph-Joseph cool art glass food prep boards. Like aisles of Christmas décor. Like Caspari cocktail napkins. Like real glass containers for food storage and made in the US no less. Like Oxo salad spinners in two sizes. Like...well, you get the picture of why I got side tracked on the way to aisle 8. Well stocked everything, friendly service, accessible entry from parking, clear access aisles wide enough to shop without an obstacle course and reasonable prices to boot. What's not to like? Prices are sort of high here but the very fact I can walk here from home makes that not a huge deal. Everyone here is helpful and I have yet to come in with an item in mind and walk out empty handed. They have so much here for a smaller hardware store. They had the duster and cleaning things I needed, a tea diffuser, tools and washer tubes I needed. A side note you guys totes need to get the dryer lint cleaner they have. I pulled out like four sweaters worth of dryer lint from the vent and now am hoping my dryer will work better. If that doesn't work I will just start a dryer lint farm...who wants a tour? I will be back, but hopefully for more fun projects! read more

LEE FROM PEARL ACE HARDWARE. I went in a month ago because my license plate fell off in the car wash and he helped me out and put it back on no charge. He was the sweetest person ever (I literally told my mom about him). AND THEN my car got stolen a week later and found just a few days ago. My plates were in the trunk so I went in and he helped me put them on again. He was a little busy the second time I went in but his generosity and kindness was so refreshing. Horrible service. I would give them zero stars if I could.. My husband had a horrible experience there, and here's what happened: He needed ONE bag of something for our garden. It was about 5:30pm, and the store said they closed at 7pm online. When he got there, they said they were closed and he couldn't come in? He told them about the closing time online, and they got furious (who knows why.....) he knew where the item was, and said he could just buy it and leave. But this is inner Portland, there is a higher cost to being here for them too. Oh, and I have never been talked down to here. No man-splaining the obvious or patronizing nonsense. Whenever I have specialty hardware needs I march right down the street to the Ace Hardware in The Pearl, not just because it's spitting distance but because it's awesome. Here's a fine example of its awesomeness: today was the day I decided I was going to fix my hookah. Lee figured out the best way to fix it, then proceeded to fix it, then decided it was so fun fixing it he wasn't going to charge me for the labor or for the threading tool necessary to fix it. Apparently because Ace Hardware is a "friendly, neighborhood store" each individual store can create their own return policies without having to post the policy, nor will the employees inform you at the time of purchase. Actually what makes this store unique is that when you attempt to call and talk to a manager as to why the corporate policy says something FAR different online, you are not only met with belligerent hostility from their teenage "floor manger" but you get to endure being hung up on! Yes! Hung up on! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY at this poor excuse for a hardware store. Go across the bridge and shop at the Ace Hardware on Broadway. The manager at the Broadway location, is not only professional but provided me with very pertinent information and options in regards to this situation. For someone like me, who is intimidated by all things hardware, this place is a life-saver. Every time I walk in a store like this, the panic sets in as I see seas of cords and tools. I imagine bumping into a shelf and causing a domino effect as waves of hammers and nails come crashing down. Luckily at Pearl Hardware, a helpful hand is always there to ask what I'm looking for and direct me to the right area. I recently went here to buy screws to put on a shiny crystal license plate cover. The nice man helping me (I wish I knew his name!) got me the screws and even put on the covers for me! I love Pearl Hardware! Yes, it is more expensive and, therefore, has a nicer, better, sometimes more visually challenging selection of those 'normal' house things you look for in a hardware store. The free parking out front represents a definite plus in the neighborhood. And they allow dogs inside! Besides, at this location I am grateful that they can make it in Portland. They should, though, especially because of their extensive collection and helpful staff. The extra discounted days are nice and occur regularly, and with points you can save even more. Covid-19 times... The objective was to pick up spray-paint for a family member on the way home. Pearl Hardware had a flawless Covid-19 set-up. One is to either phone their order in or enter it online. When you arrive, the item(s) are set aside for you to check-out with. Outside the store they had spaces marked by paint where awaiting customers would stand 6 feet apart. The staff only lets customers in with a mask/face cover. The staff also enforced everyone to use their automated hand sanitizing machine. I was in and out of the store in less than a minute. Just wanted to thank the staff for maintaining their strict system, as it showed that they truly care about their customers. read more

This is a good store that has a little bit of everything, and friendly helpful staff. We recently needed a battery that was not available through amazon or any of the usual channels, but was available at Pearl Hardware. They have severely reduced hours because of Covid19, but we ordered online, and I went the following week to pick it up. There was a line outside already, (six feet apart), but they were so organized that I was out of there in no time and didn't even have to go inside the store. The worst customer service! I was told that if an item I bought didn't work I could return it with the packaging and receipt. So I tried to return it and was told no that I could only get in store credit. I said this was not was I was told. I asked for the manager (Jen) she came walking towards me with her chest all puffed out ready for a fight! She told me we don't take rentals back, so basically saying I just used it as a rental and wanted my money back! EXTREMELY RUDE! I left in tears! I asked to talk to the owner and she said NO! My visit started out well. An associate offered their help finding something right away. Then, I stood where it says "please wait here" on the floor, and waited. There were two workers behind one of the registers. They were talking to each other. One of them turned around and looked at me. They didn't say a word, they just stared at me, and then turned back around. I was confused. I thought I should wait until someone called me over. After a couple of minutes, I walked up to the counter. The cashier grabbed my items and scannned them. No "hello", no "how are you doing today?", they didn't say a single word. They didn't even offer me a bag. I wondered if I had done something wrong. I know people have bad days sometimes, so maybe that was it. I recently went in looking for a plumbing fitting for a garbage disposal that I was installing. I wasn't certain exactly what I needed. The sales associate who helped was very attentive, listened to me detail the problem. He recommended a type of washer/coupling. I paid and exited the store. As I was getting into my car the sales associate ran after me and made an additional suggestion for a coupling. He had thought more on my dilemma after we had parted.
