In some ways, I love this old-timey hardware store! They are especially good for sleds, snow shovels, and rock salt. You ask them for what you are looking for, and they find it, no more wandering the big box hardware store in search for bad advice from close to minimum wage employees! But they are so old-timey, they simply close for vacation between Christmas and the day after New Year's Day! They claimed their Yelp, but don't maintain it or their Facebook - both 2004 era. I guess you could send them an email at their Hotmail address - Hotmail is 1996-7 vintage communication. Any of those would be channels to update their holiday hours. All those are new since they were founded 100 years ago. They do have a voice phone they answer, though - voice phones go back to 1887! They do have all the practical things you might need like fans, space heaters, kerosene lanterns, trash cans and more. That's a huge contrast to the instant imported clutter which Orchard Hardware had. They also have a large appliance part company that sells to the public - plus stars for that! If you're nostalgic for the way things were...or curious about how they should be...this is the place for you. This place IS the Willy Wonka's of hardware--and I was transformed into the kid in a candy shop. This can't man can. I ended up here on a whim after spending the better part of two days driving from place to place looking for someone who had, and would sell, a pressure switch for my furnace. Spoiler alert--they did. The price was beyond reasonable and the help was divine. If it sounds like I'm going overboard that's because I am. I was so impressed by the selection, the truly knowledgeable help, and the other inventory that I couldn't help but say something. He explained they carry more than 35,000 unique items and I'm not surprised one bit. have miles of warehouse shelves, and that maintaining this brilliant inventory is the crowning achievement for its owner. Whoever that person is, I asked that my thanks be shared. Ankeny Hardware is the opposite of a box store, no self checkout, no marketing, no neatly arranged and well-faced aisles--it is eclectic, crammed full, and marvelous. The help made sure I had the right part and understood how it works--made sure it was the answer to my problem...he wrote the receipt by hand, and walked me to the card machine. Every place I looked there was something I'd spent days or weeks trying to find many times before--and the stuff was all quality. I can't say enough about this place. No way. If you love old timey hardware stores, still I would not recommend this one. I bought a bathroom fan motor from them and it did not work. When I tried to only have it replaced, the guy behind the counter was sure that I was trying to exchange a product from a different store. He was so rude. When I asked to be assisted by someone more helpful, he said 'thats me, I'm the owner!" That's never good, especially as there were 2 employees there that were far nicer than this guy. He wanted me come back to the store again because I didn't bring the box. Again, I just wanted to make an exchange, he can have the new box. He was convinced that I was 'pulling one over', though his employees told him that I was in just the day before buying it from him. Ok, I came back today with the box, all contents and the receipt. The owner was not there, but I was told that I should wait 15 minutes for him to return. Here's the old timey shit that some of the old timers here in the reviews must like for some reason. Only the owner can do returns. WHAT?! And I have to wait for him to return!!! Mind you that checking out at this place in the first place is to go back before the invention on electricity. Their entire inventory and pricing is on note cards on the register counter, thousands upon thousands of note cards! That's how they tell you what an item costs. Then they ring it up, THEN you need to walk to the front of the store to do it again with your credit card. Wow. Oh my god, I will never go there again. The dream of the 1890's is really only here in Portland. And it's not a nice trip. So, I bought a new motor online in about 10 minutes for $19, will not get a refund on the broken one that this place sold me and will go to the other locally owned smaller hardware stores in town. read more

You gotta love a little mom and pop hardware store that can stand up to the big orange box and the big blue box store and still eek out a place to be here in Portland. For such a small place, there were tools crammed everywhere. I came in just to get some wire connectors, nothing big and I didn't feel I needed to venture out to Home Depot to get it. I've walked past Ankeny Hardware many times and it was time to wander in. The guys were very helpful and within 10 minutes I had my connectors and was out the door. The owner (?) of this store is the most condescending and rude person I've interacted with in a VERY long time. Some backstory: The condensate pump from my furnace went bad. I checked the model online to get an idea of what I'd be paying to replace it- Diversitech CP22, about $46 through every online channel I could find. I prefer to shop local so tried Ankeny Hardware as a call ahead confirmed they have stock of condensate pumps. The first employee (bless his heart) who tries to help offers up a different version of what I have, a Diversitech CP22 Low Profile, and quotes $120 (!!!!!!). Quick check online shows max $52 for the same thing, so no, I'm not gonna pay that. He then says they've got another option for $90, and another quick check online shows an identical-looking model for $46. I fully expect and am generally happy to pay a premium at mom-and-pop stores but not a $45 premium, so I decline both options and ask if he can at least find me some flexible pipe to run from the furnace drain to the pump so it's easier for me to get the pump out of the tiny spot it's been wedged into next time I need to make repairs. He goes off to look. While he's looking, the owner gets involved. Tries desperately to justify their price-gouging by telling me I'm comparing apples to oranges with my price checks because their $90 option is exclusive to them and has an alarm that tells me when the pump is bad. First of all- presumably the float in that pump triggers the safety switch to trip the pump circuit, and I'll know the pump is bad when my furnace stops working and that circuit is open. Secondly, I'm not going to pay an extra $45 for an alarm. I say as much, and apparently this is a personal offense. Owner goes on to condescendingly tell me that ALSO, I should get a PVC coupling and replace the PVC pipe I had to cut from the furnace drain in order to get the condensate pump out because "condensate is really hot" and will explode a flexible pipe. Sorry- so the the condensate is too hot to go INTO the pump, but somehow the flexible pipe running from the pump to the exterior is perfectly fine after years of use? Does the pump also have some condensate cooling feature I don't know about? Anyhow, hot liquid exploding flexible pipes is probably news to just about anyone who runs drain pipes from a dishwasher or washing machine. Owner says "APPARENTLY you know more about this than we do" and by God I would bet a hundred bucks he's never said that to a man. But YES, about MY HVAC system, MY workspace and access limitations, and MY desire to pay a fair price for parts- I sure do know more than you do. read more

Storming Norman....GOTTA LOVE THIS GUY! Check this out: 1. Closing Time 3:00 - current time 3:10 Dollied a product across the street for a customer, note on door said "Back in 10 min". 3:10 Storming Norman returns. One other customer waiting, he lets us both in. First customer takes 5 mins. (3:15) I take 45 minutes of his time "OFF THE CLOCK". Yes, OFF THE CLOCK!!! He's helping me FREE! Not only is he helping get the correct part ( which 9 other big box retailers didn't have or had a clue as to what I needed with no part number or serial number) Storming Norman had a brain AND the knowledge to know out of 35,000 parts ( think of an IKEA Store with everything crammed into 5,000 Sq Ft of space) which part I needed, but also how to reverse the direction of motor so it would suck instead of blow. Only at 4:12 to he inform me that he was supposed to be at a dinner party at 4:30 AND he lives a 30 mins away from the store. So Storming Norman STILL had to close up the store, drive home and more then likely spend another 30 minutes getting purdy for the party! So that means he was at least 5:25 AND then whatever travel time to get to the party! The worse part of it, is he was gonna tell his wife he was gonna be late! I told him "tell her it's all my fault". I will be making my FIRST STOP next time at Ankeny Hardware for ALL MY HARDWARE NEEDS from now on & I live 10 miles, 40 mins of my time round trip to get the right part at the right price the FIRST time is well worth it! Shopped here sporadically since moving to Portland a couple months ago (light bulbs, epoxy, etc). Recently took an antique porcelain lamp out of storage from 10years ago when a relative passed. A tiny screw holding a handle in place was missing. Went to multiple stores (Hippo Hardware was also immensely helpful), but could never find a size to work. Came back a couple weeks ago to Ankeny thinking I'd ask guidance. Not only did they refer me to a place in town that might work (it was closed that day) but....apparently I dropped the piece of tape w screw in it when I left. They found it and not only didn't toss it, but held it behind the register for weeks. When I finally had time to address this again yesterday, i realized I was missing the screw. Tore my apartment apart looking for it. Figured I'd try a moonshot of having left it at Ankeny somehow and sure enough Patrick knew exactly what I was talking about and where it was. I kind of can't believe how large the selection is at this little, neighborhood hardware store. They're walking distance from where I live, and have probably saved me a dozen trips out to big box stores. Much of what they've cut out of their selection, vs. the big box stores, seems to be the bottom tier of price/quality. Sometimes that works out great, sometimes not so much. They tend to approach customers immediately and assertively to offer assistance, but will let you just browse if you ask. read more

Buyer beware! I decided to shop local and paid for it. I needed to replace an old thermostat and was unaware that I needed a millivolt thermostat. After some discussion, I ended up purchasing a Honeywell CT87K for $49.94 which by the way is $26.27 higher than if I had purchased the same thermostat from Home Depot and $20 more than if I had purchased it from Ace Hardware or from Honeywell Directly! After getting it home and installing it, the thermostat did not work. I called Honeywell, and they informed me that I needed a different kind of thermostat. I called Ankeny Hardware, told them the issue, and they were very helpful in finding me a replacement; a White-Rodgers M30 which I believe they sell for $29.99. By the way, Home Depot sells it for $18.42. I then asked Patrick about the return and he promptly told me that they do not return electrical items, as is stated clearly on their hand-written receipts. Do your research, know exactly what you need, and how much you should expect to pay for it before heading over to Ankeny Hardware, because the moral of this story is If you want to get over-charged for electrical items and not be able to return them, then go see the helpful folks at Ankeny Hardware. Otherwise, head over to Home Depot, Ace Hardware or some other chain that understands the concept of customer service. read more

I went in looking for a simple little aluminum trash can. Found one in the corner of this messy little store & noticed they were chained up. I grabbed one to check the price & I hear a voice saying "that's a no-no to touch the garbage cans!" I was pretty thrown off, the older gentleman (possible owner) was extremely rude. I'm definitely not a trash can booster, or a small child lol. I asked if I could get a price on the small aluminum trash cans, and he cuts me off & goes on to say how the store had just opened (12:25 PM) on a Wednesday & how I need to wait my turn. That was enough for me, I said I'll take my business elsewhere & he tries a weak attempt at saving my business. No thanks a-hole, I don't need to give your lousy little shop any of my money. Nice shop, friendly staff and quite a bit of inventory packed into the place. The only problem is that the prices on a lot of their items are ridiculous. I'm not comparing them to big box stores either. Last week I went in to get picture hanger hooks, four simple bits of bent metal. Ankenys price - $4.25 I went to Winks, just 8 blocks away at Stark and 2nd and they had exactly the same item for $1.95. Same went for wire, screws and tape. Wish I could shop here but hate the feeling that I'm being ripped off. read more

Single, standard smaller size wrench, without gold plating: $21. Secret return policy, never mentioned to customers: All returns must be received within 14 days, for store credit minus restocking fee, only. No monetary refunds will be issued. I tried to return an unused wrench, because I had purchased two, not knowing the exact size of the nut I was trying to remove from my car. (Sadly, because it was tightly fastened, I couldn't bring the nut with me.) I was asked if I knew the store's return policy, and responded that no, I wasn't informed about it. An exception was made for me, and I was issued a 30-day store credit, despite the fact that I had waited 20 days to return the unused wrench. I was issued a store credit for the amount of the wrench, minus their 30% restocking fee. Essentially, this means I was issued $15 for the unused $21 wrench I returned, and charged $6 for absolutely nothing. Since I'm a renter, and don't find myself needing hardware items on a daily basis, I gifted my store credit to a neighbor, who unfortunately misplaced it. While it was misplaced, the store credit slip expired. Granted, some of this situation is a case of bad luck, but Ankeny Hardware's return policy and restocking fee certainly don't ease any frustration their customers might be experiencing. Let's not even get into the cluttered, haphazard layout of the store. I'm all about supporting my local economy, buying primarily from independent retailers, but I won't be stepping foot in this hellhole again. read more

Norman, the owner of Ankeny Hardware runs and operates an awesome little hardware store in Southeast Portland. Where the store might lack in size, it makes up with a huge heart. When you first walk in you begin to wonder how did they get so much product into that small store. It is merchandised well. They happened to be probably the one of the last retail stores to have portable air conditioners. I bought 3 of them from Norman. I knew that I was going to need to rent a truck or van to transport these units to where they needed to go, which was Newberg Oregon. Without any hesitation, he said he could get them down to Newberg. If ever anyone needed to support a small business, this one should be supported heavily. By far not in the same league when it comes to size compared to the big box retailers. But what you will get there is some awesome personalized service. I just bought a house and have been in three times so far, and each time, the grizzled vets on staff were knowledgable and helpful, coming out from behind the counter to solve whatever problem I've brought them. However even if I move, this will be the hardware store that I go to. I needed some pvc pipe to build a DIY Photobooth. The owner Norman was so nice and helpful, and funny to boot! Short version: Amazing service that you can't get at a 'big box' store. Long Version: We have a 1976 Carrier furnace which has been having trouble starting, while I was putting in a new 3-wire pilot that I ordered online, it wouldn't start... a downgrade from where I got it yesterday. While trying to move the electrode closer to the pilot, it snaps. It's 5:30 on a Saturday night. Everything is closed or closing. It's supposed to start snowing tonight. Monday is a holiday. I am freaking out and my girlfriend is completely furious with me. I am searching for any HVAC distributor in Portland that I can find. Johnstone Supply looks like they have something that will work, but when I call their after-hours number they don't work with consumers, just other businesses. They recommend Ankeny Hardware or Nor-mon Distributing. Norman C. at Ankeny totally saved me. They closed at 3pm today, but he met me at the store at 7pm (for a very reasonable after hours charge) and sold me exactly what I needed. It turned out my old electrode wasn't passing enough of a charge to light the pilot, so now my furnace is starting great. We have heat again! I can't thank you guys enough! Avoid this store unless you went very rude service! I went in to buy an appliance and when I asked a couple of basic questions about it, I received very condescending answers from the Salesman. He was giving me a very hard sell and grew very impatient when I said I wanted to think about. I walked out because I couldn't take the rudeness and the used car salesman approach. When I got home, I looked up reviews of the appliance and discovered it was of low quality. Probably why he pushed me so hard to buy and was so upset and rude when I declined. I rarely write a review but this time I feel the need to pass on my thanks on line. My air conditioner went out last week on one of Portland's (rare) hot days. Was told I needed a capacitor. The repair company estimated $350 for the part and install and it had to be ordered which would take three days. A friend referred me to Ankeny Hardware. When I showed them my capacitor (the counter person called it a "dual") they also told me it would take three days to get. Then the counter person went into the back area and came out with two "single" capacitors and showed me how to connect them to make a dual. Best thing was the price-it was less than $50. I stuck around to browse afterwards and also found a great pair of small pliers perfect for my jewelry making and they were made in the USA for only about $15. Love this store...always willing to answer questions, help you out of a jam. Seriously...where can you go in and buy ONE screw or bolt, when that is all you need. Come on people, this is not a mega chain, this is a family business that offers service way above and beyond any large store. So I pay a little more for stuff, the friendliness and attention to detail certainly make up for any price difference.
