It took me years finally to find the guts to come here. I used to wait for the 31-Balboa bus across the street from Pearl Market, and it looked like shady deals used to go down right in front and at the (then nearby) laundromat. When I finally gathered up the gumption, I was expecting the place to be a dump or clearly a front or just old and dirty, like so many corner stores are. But I should have known from its sign and funny artwork and the care with which the owners replaced the colored lights illuminating said sign at night that this place would be legit, and it is. Slightly expensive, like most corner stores, but the place is clean and well stocked, and the two different people I've dealt with on my six or seven visits have always been nice. I don't live nearby anymore, so the probability of my revisiting soon isn't too high, but if you're walking down Divis to or from Geary and you want a little something to drink and/or a little something to eat, avoid the grody Walgreens on the corner of O'Farrell Street and walk two blocks to Pearl Market. They're open real late, except when they're not. That's really my only criticism--for a while there, this place closed really early. Or it was closed for days on end. Then things went back to normal, but I don't walk or ride the bus past very much anymore, so who knows what it's like now? read more

Like a lot of "liquor stores" in the city, Pearl also adds the bonus of a pretty good sandwich counter; something that didn't seem to catch on down in LA LA land as far as I can tell. Open late, this seems like as good a spot as any to grab a bonus twelver if you're burning the midnight oil... but just as likely to pick up a can of beans here, a bag of chips, or a bottle of soda (that's "pop," Mathilda.) Seems to have a pretty good local clientele of regulars and neighbors, with the occasional visitor or explorer to the LPH/Divisadero proper. Perhaps in response to the slightly more sophisticated customer base, they also carry a decent selection of wine that you might not order at a $100/plate restaurant, but that you wouldn't be embarrassed bringing to your in-laws place for dinner. Haven't ordered a sandwich here, but there always seems to be a person or two waiting. Good sign. read more

I was doing laundry on the same block and decided I will go to the store to pick up a bottle of Dusse cognac. when I arrived to the store, the door was closed and locked with a sign that said, "will be closed for the next few days" . A man inside the store saw me and unlocked the door. He was the owner and mentioned that they were closed for a year due to renovations, but today was their first day back open. He told me I was his first customer, and he was excited to be back open . He was very friendly and helpful . They had a great selection of whisky , cognac, tequila , vodka and wines. The store still Needed to be food and beverages items due to being being closed. I would definitely be back . read more

Great little corner sandwich shop! Basic yes, tasty, fresh and generous YES!! Dropped of car for service and searched for sandwich. They have it all. Throw in top-notch service (the owners are awesome and are even nice at 9 a.m. on Saturdays when I've stumbled in hungover and reeking of vodka and begging for fresh coffee because we are out and I am too lazy to walk the extra block to Apollo or Abir) and some real neighborhood diversity and what's not to love? Also, they have tampons. Which is the last thing on my Standing list, and the one thing Boyfriend still refuses to buy. So yes, they have it all. And they serve it with a smile. Pearl market has everything that a neighborhood convenience store should carry, and it's well organized and clean and has wide isles. It seems like kind of a shame that all I ever buy here is alcohol, except for the one time I bought some tonic water and a lime. Look in the refrigerator case: 40s, tallboys, six packs and half cases of domestics, imports, and micros, and giant alice in wonderland sized bottles of red stripe. 10 to 12 linear feet of shelf space is devoted to wine, and there's hard alcohol behind the counter for every taste and budget. This is a "neighborhood in transition" and there are a lot of different tastes and budgets around. Pearl Market caters to residents of the million dollar homes up the hill on broderick and the Pitts Plaza projects down on scott alike. Everyone needs a good corner store. read more

Growing up I always imagined living in a big city like NYC (SF was too close to be a city I imagined living in) and in that big city there was a corner market where you could get anything you needed at a moments notice! This is Pearl Market for me...while not on my corner (obviously I'm not on a cool block), it's just a block and a half away from me. This market has just about everything you could possibly need. Toilet paper for that night your idiot boyfriend stayed over and used the last of the roll without telling you, ice packs for your swollen knuckles after you swung at the same idiot, that bottle of wine you said you'd bring to a dinner party but forgot until you were 2 minutes from catching the 24 (btw, they have an EXCELLENT selection of wine!), and peanut butter for when you had to toss out a just opened jar of Jif because someone (maybe you) didn't close the lid all the way and woke up to see the ants had made a new home. Granted, everything is going to be a bit more expensive because it's a CONVENIENCE store, but it's worth it. Also, the owner is very pleasant and helpful....so why the minus one star? By no way is it the market...it's just the environment. It's often full of annoying teenagers who live nearby who have a lack of manners and respect for most things. That being said, I'll still go back there when I'm needing something last minute...and I'll walk there because it'll remind me of the dreams of my childhood. read more

Pearl Market seriously has everything. From pickled pig's feet (ew) to an infinitely impressive selection of wine, beer, and sake for every taste and budget, it's always my choice for a late-night snack and beverage run. The sandwiches are decent, and the stock on certain items (juices, sodas, ice cream) varies from time to time, which gives you a little more variety than most convenience markets. One may find the occasional unsavory character lurking by the counter, but for the most part the patrons are pretty friendly. Besides, the always conversational and funny gentlemen behind the counter more than make up for any number ill-mannered customers. I even spent my New Year's Eve there this year, which resulted in my tipsy self slipping on champagne spray and falling pretty hard on my hindquarters, but that's a different story... read more

However, you are certainly aware you are in the heart of Western Addition and patrons of this establishment would likely mug you for that new pack of Juicy Fruit you just bought. Prices are fair by convenience store standards and beer selection is ample enough. If you live in the neighborhood then this should be your store. read more

Not only are the guys that work there super nice (and remember you if you are a regular), they always have great recommendations (especially for cheap wine!) A good all around convenience store, well placed. The Divis Corridor ends a few blocks to the south, and then there are options north, closer to UCSF Mt Zion. Pearl lies in a retail-dry spot between these areas, offering mom-and-pop convenience. I drop in when the house is low on milk. I've also purchased snacks, ice cream and beer. The one thing that turned out badly was their whole bean coffee. It was pretty bad. Otherwise a good place. read more

Woah, check out that shelf of wine that runs pretty much the length of the store. It's the first thing that greets you when you walk in, followed by some really nice guys behind the counter who are also engaging in some robust conversation with regulars. But back to the wine. I swear, as soon as my gaze turned to meet the visage of those numerous bottles of red and their white companions, a soft 'ahhhhhh' caressed my eardrums and filled me briefly with deep satisfaction. When I moved into the 'hood (gentrification and all), the Pearl was my first stop. The three guys who alternate behind the counter are always sure to say hello, and it's never the usual lame small talk. One guy confessed he liked OneRepublic, and another told me he liked my choice of beer (Boont Amber Ale). Nothing makes you feel more at home than a friendly, well stocked liquor mart. Customers beware. Make sure to double-check your receipt before leaving the store if you're paying with a credit card. I purchased a pastrami sandwich and a bottle of Pure Leaf tea. Instead of being charged $10.64, an extra "3" was added, and I was charged $103.64. As I was in a hurry, I hastily signed the receipt and left without noticing until I got home that night, only to find out that I had been grossly overcharged. I immediately contacted my credit card company and explained the situation. They temporarily credited my account for the difference as they investigated the charge. After over a month of not hearing anything from either the credit card company or Pearl Market, I assumed everything had been resolved. I was wrong. Someone at Pearl Market finally got around to disputing my claim. A representative from my credit card company called me over a month after the initial transaction saying that the merchant insists the charge of $103.64 was correct. I did not receive an itemized receipt (the receipt only showed the total $103.64), so there was no way for me to produce evidence that I had indeed been overcharged for my sandwich and drink. Because of this, the credit card representative let me know that the chances of a successful claim was slim to none as it was my word against the merchant's. How often does someone spend over $100 at deli and liquor store in the middle of the week, at the height of lunch rush hour? Apparently often enough for merchant to insist this was a legitimate charge. I won't be back. read more

This is the closest corner market to me. I was suprised by their prices. They are moderate for a small corner grocery store. I expected much higher prices when I first ran in to pick up bread, catfood and milk. They have recently hired a great Deli girl for the 10 to 3 hours Monday through Thursday, who is quick, friendly and makes a great sandwich for that can be 2 meals for me. It costs about $5. The store is clean and well lit with lots of food products, as well as a good selection of quality wine (only one row, not the entire store.) A thumbs up. read more
