As a past student of Grappling Zone I can confirm this establishment was... odd. I stayed for 5…read moreyears at first it was fun and enjoyable, but it soon became frustrating and downright uncomfortable. They hired people (mainly males) that made me and multiple other children feel uncomfortable, so I do believe they do not look into who their staff may really be. I was also groomed I'd prefer to not get into details but there was a much much older child who I now realized actually groomed me and my friends and was extremely inappropriate with us. Not to mention later on he was not even allowed in the restroom unsupervised because he had apparently asked multiple extremely young boys if he could suck them off.Now that me and my friends from there look back we realize that we were put in a unsafe environment. Not to mention the owners aren't exactly the best. In summary it was a good place but no longer is. I would not recommend sending your child and putting them through the same hell we went through. When I look back on the memories truth be told I am frustrated that the establishment was let go and that they allow things like what I've stated to happen. I hated that place and will never go back. P.S. You may notice there are many 5 star reviews well one thing to take notice of is that all of the good reviews are from a long time ago because as I states before this place is much different now than it was then.

Her safety away at college pushed us to sign up, and what a difference it has made for all of us in different ways! John and his team will help strengthen skills like problem solving under pressure, being aware, being authoritative, identifying and evaluating threats, protecting and defending yourself and others, and so much more! I had not trained in martial arts or any fighting system, so I came in as a total novice. Several years ago, I took a 90-minute women's self-defense class at another facility. Coming here, I realized self-defense is a lot more extensive than I thought (i.e. defending from a knife from the front versus behind, defending a side choke hold versus a straight punch, performing a gun disarm from the chest versus from the back, etc). This system teaches self-defense in dozens of different situations, so you feel empowered to handle different circumstances--including single and multiple attackers. This isn't a one-and-done type of training; you will learn so much, and the more you come, the more it will become second nature so you can learn to handle dynamic situations efficiently and safely. John and his team made me and my family feel very welcome from the start, and we quickly felt like family at the facility. The team is very generous with their time and patience to ensure students are absorbing the training by adjusting instruction in terms you can relate to. John constantly asks for feedback--further showing how much they genuinely care. His other instructors (like Sam, the Muay Thai Boxer and Jempy) attend other classes outside of their own, so they share their expertise across classes. You go at your own pace, so you go to as many or as few classes as you want. There are plenty of classes to choose from! It is also great how the fitness classes are complementary to the type of self-defense and combat training being taught at the facility. Shout out to Tyrone (boxing instructor) for his awesome Combat Fitness class! Lastly, we have been impressed with how many students have been training with John and his team for 5+ years, plus how many families attend. That speaks volumes! On top of that, other students who have been there a while are very nice to help and encourage newcomers like me. It is a strong family atmosphere. Try them out!

Whether you're new to the sport or maybe you've had a bad experience elsewhere, the coaches here create an atmosphere where everyone is welcomed, supported, and encouraged to improve. I know everyone says that but here it is the culture. The instruction is outstanding, and a special shoutout goes to Coach Joe Murphy, whose knowledge, patience, and dedication to helping students succeed really stand out. My husband and I are continually impressed by his gift of teaching and his patience with each and every person who comes through the doors. There is a genuine sense of community here that can be hard to find. My husband, our 6-year-old, our 4-year-old, and I are all members, and we've had a fantastic experience. We enjoy having access to both gi and no-gi classes, and the flexible class schedule makes it easy to fit classes into our busy family life. If you're considering trying jiu-jitsu, I can't recommend this gym enough. Great coaching, great people, and a great environment for the entire family. Highly recommend! Plus the gym is conveniently located for those in West Pearland and there's plenty of parking both in front of and behind the gym.

Unfortunately, her coach was unable to make it at the last minute. Wanting to ensure she had support, I reached out to several Renzo Gracie academies in the Houston area that were attending the tournament. Only one responded--Professor Joe Murphy, the owner of Renzo Gracie Pearland. Despite having multiple students competing at the same time, Professor Joe assured me he would do his best to coach her or find someone who could. He even shared his number so we could connect at the event. True to his word, he made time to meet with us before her match, offering valuable advice for her first tournament. When it was time for her matches, he rushed over between coaching his own students to be in her corner. Although she didn't win her matches (no fault of his, as I could hear his great coaching), what stood out most was the way he supported her afterward. He provided positive feedback, helped her process the experience, and most importantly, made sure she kept her head up. BJJ tournaments can be intimidating, especially for an 8-year-old, and his presence turned what could have been a discouraging experience into a positive one. Thank you, Professor Joe! If you're considering Renzo Gracie Pearland, don't hesitate--sign up today. If this is how he treats a random kid from another gym, I can only imagine the dedication he gives to his own students!
