My mother, my sister, and I visited this location yesterday to purchase eyeglasses for my mother. We are African-American, and our experience raised serious concerns about discriminatory treatment. Almost immediately after the initial greeting, we were asked whether my mother had insurance -- not once, but multiple times. The question quickly shifted to, "What type of insurance is it?" We were initially assisted by someone who appeared to be in training, and then another employee came over and asked the exact same question again. The repeated focus on insurance happened before anyone took the time to ask what my mother was looking for or offer meaningful assistance with frames. While my mother was trying on glasses, another non-white family entered the store. After their greeting, they too were immediately asked what type of insurance they had. At that point, it became difficult to ignore the pattern. Shortly afterward, a Caucasian woman walked in, and the difference in tone and approach was striking. She was warmly asked what brought her in, what styles she preferred, and was engaged in friendly conversation. We did not hear her being questioned about insurance upfront in the same persistent manner. Insurance is a normal part of the purchasing process. However, when customers of color are immediately and repeatedly questioned about insurance, while a white customer is approached with warmth and general service questions first, it raises legitimate concerns about racial bias. The disparity in treatment felt discriminatory. For context, we spent $900 on two pairs of frames. Despite making a significant purchase, the service we received did not reflect respect or equal treatment. We will not be returning to this location under any circumstances, nor would we recommend it. Management should seriously evaluate how implicit bias may be influencing customer interactions. While the doctor's office in Pearle vision is great the optical department is absolutely horrible. I always have issues when dealing with them. Very rude and unprofessional and not helpful at all. All they want is you to spend more money. I would never purchase anything from them ever again. Horrible experience. read more

Super helpful staff, really nice during COVID as well. In network for VSP, which is honestly a godsend. Really helpful and nice staff, good COVID precautions, good experience in store. Only downside is frames are way more expensive than other places. My VSP plan had an allowance to $250, but I found the exact same frames for $100 less at LensCrafters and even less on other websites. If you're paying completely out of pocket, I would definitely shop around. For what I needed (in network VSP), it came out pretty good! read more

This location is FANTASTIC. I work in between this location and my home, so decided to go out of the way to try a new one after being unhappy with some places near me. When I called up to make my exam, the young woman was so sweet, so helpful and just pleasant to speak to. Yesterday was my appointment (during a global pandemic, mind you) and I was greeted by smiling faces. The location is insanely clean and the staff is constantly wiping everything down. I was taken almost immediately to see my [new] doctor. Her assistant was very helpful and explained everything as we went (she knew how nervous I was about the eye puff exam!). Not only was that enjoyable, put all their exam machines are way more advanced than things I've seen in the past. Dr. Peli is the best eye doctor I've ever had the pleasure of working with! The fact she was able to break everything down that was going on with my eyes in a way I could understand more easily, didn't rush my exam, listened to what I had to say, and what my concerns were- this is what all medical appointments should be like. But most of all she had personality, an excellent "bed-side" manner. After my exam the front desk staff and I laughed, she gave me great recommendations for contacts and even helped me by giving me her opinions when picking out glasses. I was there for over and hour and a half and never not enjoyed a second. Basically, you are missing out if you're not traveling to this location for your eye exam and glasses. I have been going to Dr Syvia Peli for 30 years....with some visits to an MD. I have recommended many new Patients...I have a very tough Prescription. She always helped me when the glasses were not exactly right... She recently bought the entire Practice and hired more ODs-- Things have changed DRASTICALLY My MD did the refraction. Pearle Made the Glasses..(Not Cheap at all) I could not see out of the Left eye. I made an appointment to see Dr. Peli...She adjusted the prescription. We have been going to Pearle for years. Every once in a while we try another place but we always come back. Dr Peli and her staff are phenomenal! They are caring and knowledgeable. When my husband needed cataract surgery this year, Dr. Peli referred us to a wonderful Opthalmologist and Dr Peli's staff helped schedule his first appointment and coordinate the insurance. Now that his surgery is over and he's been released to go back for his new glasses he requested to see only Dr. Peli. Also eyeglasses can be expensive but Pearle is willing to work with you to find the right pair for the right price. They explain the benefits but don't push you into options you can't afford. They are happy to adjust your glasses when you need them to and always with a smile. The 1 year warranty is great! It came in handy just recently when I scratched my glasses and needed to replace the lenses. It didn't add that much to the cost of the glasses initially and for a small deductible ( $25) I will have two new lenses. Overall we definitely recommend Pearle and Dr Peli in Rockaway. read more

I purchased a pair of glasses last December. The $483 total (after insurance) included scratch resistant lenses; since I'm a 66 y/o man and not a 12 y/o, I didn't purchase the damage insurance. When I noticed a small scratch last week, I went to the store to see what they would do. The answer was that I SHOULD have purchased the damage insurance and I could purchase a new pair of glasses since there is nothing they can do about scratches. If that's the case, then why even MENTION scratch resistance as a "benefit" for the lens choice????? read more

I've bought 3 sets of glasses here -- 1 where I brought my own frame, 1 for Rx sunglasses (curved no less), and a conventional purchase. Each time, the staff was knowledgeable, courteous, and accommodating. Dr. Peli is my "go to" -- she and her staff are very thorough, caring, and I've always been able to get an appointment easily. Super disappointed with the customer service there. I wanted to wear monthly contact lenses but the trial the doctor gave me didn't work well. She switched it to 2 weeks lenses. I ordered the lenses she prescribed but would not get them for some time and asked if I could use another trial to hold me over until then. They just told me there's nothing they can do because I didn't order my contacts from them- it was over $200 MORE to order from them. They told me to just wear my glasses but would not update my glasses prescription because I am pregnant and my eyes are changing. Left me in a rut and missing my old eye doctor! read more

I can't say enough good things about Pearle Vision in Rockaway! I've worked in some form of the service industry for about 20 years and the customer service here is as good as it gets. I came in for prescription sunglasses and was helped immediately by an awesome woman with a brown bob and funky frames (sorry to say I can't remember her name). She was extremely helpful, offering suggestions, helping me price different options, and rushing the order since I wanted them before I went on vacation. I was also helped by Steven, who was very courteous and professional and completed the top notch experience at Pearle. Not only did I get the glasses back before I went away, but I was helped further when I accidentally bent the side of the sunglasses and was worried I'd have to spend some $$ getting them repaired. I was told to bring them in, as they were under warranty, and I'd get them repaired with no problem. Thats exactly what happened, I brought them in and left with them 10 mins later, as good as new.. Again the service was top-notch and everyone there was a pleasure to deal with. After going to an "upscale" optometrist in Bergen County for 25 years, I may have to start using Pearle for all of my vision needs. She helped me with all the insurance information and it was quite a few phone calls back-and-forth but I am very pleased with the customer service she provided for me. Seasoned eyewarer. Purchased Rimless Silhouette Titan's with Progressive Lens. Pickup was an unpleasant experience. Later, I was told that, Elaine, is there best, didn't bother to eyeball My current eyeware - why relevant? One ear is lower, therefore, the new temple also needs to be adjusted about 1/8" higher off of any table surface. I also don't like the ends of the temples wraped around My ears. Instead, she just began bending and twisting and then placed them on my face and then she realized that the nose pads were way too open for my narrow bridge and then began mangling again - I had too stop her and said, "Could You please just look at My current glasses so You have an idea and then just make some tweeks on these new ones?" By this time - these brand new frames were beginning to feel old with all the adjusting; even one of the temple's had a few qrimps in it by this time. Anyway, I went home, and realized that I hadn't compared My nearsightedness vs. My old glasses, as I could no longer see close-up with the old pair. Wow! The new pair from Pearle were exactly the same. I still couldn't read close-up. So, I went to A.Juba Rt.46, Parsippany, and Jeff informed Me that Pearle's prescription was Not accurately made. Jeez. Also, Jeff would give me Varilux Progressives & not some generics like Pearle. There is a big differece!. So, I Re-bought everything all over again at A.Juba and am very glad that I did. And very, very pleased with A.Juba. Pearle had made so many errors that even though it cost Me hundreds and hundreds of dollars more to start all over again, it just wasn't worth the aggravation to deal with those people at Pearle Vision. Recommend avoiding Pearle, unless, maybe, your a single lens wearer who doesn't care what You get or how it's given to You. Seriously. read more

I've been going to this pearle vision location for a couple years now. I always see Dr. Peli and everything always went smoothly. The staff was never overly friendly but they seemed to be pleasant but today I had an absolutely horrible and embarrassing experience and because of it I will no longer be going to this location. I had recently moved to Stamford, ct and came home to nj to get all my doctor appts done in one day. Because of a previous appointment I had arrived a little late. My appt. was at 12:30 and I had arrived at 12:35. When I walked up to the counter the receptionist asked the normal questions but after I said I was there to see Dr. Peli she didn't even look up at me and said "well will try to squeeze you in but you are 10 min late" I replied, " I'm sorry but my car said 12:35 I'm not sure if my clock is wrong" not once did she look up at me she just kept clicking away on her computer. Then Dr. Peli came up to the desk and I was hoping she would say don't worry about it we can still see you because she is usually very nice. The receptionist turns to her and asks if she can squeeze me in and the Dr. just looked at me shook her head and said, "we can see what we can do but it's past 12:30" meanwhile everyone in the office could hear the whole conversation and I started to turn red because I was embarrassed. I understand I was late but to turn me away because of 5 minutes was mortifying. I'm pretty sure every time I go there they make me wait 10-15 min before they see me anyway. With that be saying said I just said don't worry about it and left. I understand there are rules but they could have dealt with it in a much nicer way. The thing that bothered me the most is that the receptionist lied. I knew I was only 5 min late because as I was standing there I looked at my phone and when I walked out it was only 12:38. Needless to say this office needs to work on their customer service skills and not make their patience feel in adequate. I hope they can get there stuff together. read more

I brought my father to Pearle Vision (by Best Buy) last night to get him a new set of glasses and sunglasses. His current pair are seriously outdated and he just recently had eye surgery and was eager to get a new "cooler" pair in each category. We were greeted by John immediately upon entering the building. My father told him what t kind of glasses he was looking for and John brought us over to a section on the wall that he thought would fit my dad's needs the best. We were there for over an hour total, most of which was spent deciding between 5-7 pairs of glasses...John was very helpful in explaining why some glasses would be a poor choice for my Dad's prescription type and which glasses would be better. John was also very honest in sharing his opinion on which glasses looked good on my Dad and which ones looked not so good and was able to tell us why(they made his face look long, stuck out too far, etc.). Over all the experience was actually really great and we very much appreciated the time John spent with us and how informative he was about all of the different types of glasses. In the end my Dad felt that he got a great price on his new pairs of glasses and did not feel pressured at any point to buy stuff he did not need (bi-focals, upgrades, etc.) We will definitely recommend this place to others. read more
