This is an awesome place to go to. The food is perfect BBQ, the service was solid (the bartender and waitstaff were nice and helpful) and the ambiance was great. We really like the patio area with the lights at night, but also the option to go inside in case of a windy night. Let me talk about the BBQ. We've spent some time in NC, so we know the good stuff. We got the pulled pork, the brisket, and the chicken (the sampler) with collard greens, cornbread, cucumbers and hush puppies. Puppies were fried nicely and enjoyable. All of the BBQ was cooked just right, and they had a variety of sauces to suit different preferences. I think we would get the exact same platter next time, the chicken is a little less flavorful than the other meats, but super tender and good to get for variety. On a rare sunny day in March, we biked down to Pecan Penny's for the first time to enjoy their patio. We went during happy hour and we were delightfully surprised by their prices! They had great specials on drafts and select appetizers. We ordered a few items to try- for an appetizer, we got the chips and queso (which was only $3 during HH). I got a "build your own bowl" with grits and brisket. It was hefty and a delight. My partner and our friend both ordered the special "hoppy meal." Our server seemed surprised that it was an item they offered, but it was heavily advertised on their Instagram account. The special was supposed to be $15 and included a beer, any burger on the menu with fries and a pickle, and a "toy." It was a decent purchase, but we only had one choice of beer and we didn't get a toy (which seemed to be a coaster). My friend jokingly inquired about this and the server kind of chuckled. Solid BBQ place. They have fantastic brisket (heavy smoke flavor) and home made Mac and cheese! Was not a huge fan of the poutine due to the gravy having a fruity flavor and cheese curds were cool. I did not eat on this first visit, so my review is for the experience and the drinks. I stopped in with about 45 minutes to spare before heading to another event because of the convenient location. Pecan Penny's has their own parking lot which is rare and welcomed in the area. The bartender was friendly and warm, but didn't have a great (or correct) explanation on the difference between an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan. It's a simple difference, but she really didn't know. Since both are on the menu, there should be a clear differentiation, other than one having an orange slice garnish, lol. We ordered both to see the difference. Neither was fantastic, despite the cherries. They were served in large glasses and were both very stiff, but there wasn't much flavor to write home about. I don't think I would go there for drinks again. There was an off-duty employee hanging out at the bar who was super nice, but didn't make us feel like we could avoid conversation, even if we wanted to. I am very sociable and friendly, so we chatted it up, but generally I think it's a little off to have staff drinking at the bar and chatting with new customers when they aren't working. We went to Pecan Pennys for a first visit on Tuesday, May 24. The weather was super, and we sat outside. We are doing Tuesday as we are avoiding crowds. They were adequately staffed, but the service was a little slow. We ordered the Brisket and Brisket Philly Sandwich, both with fries. We were divided on the quality of the brisket. There was one vote for great and one vote, not anything special. The not special was because the portion was perceived as a little dry. In addition to brisket, the sandwich had grilled peppers, onions, mozzarella & provolone cheeses on a toasted hoagie. There a six sauces on the table, but we only tried the G-Daddy, which was super. The patio where we sat was super and would provide room for a big group or a place to meet coworkers for a drink after your labors. Upon arriving you enter in the front courtyard where there are plenty of patio tables and corn hole. Who can't refuse a few tosses of a bean bag. My long anticipated journey to eat at Pecan Penny's fell short tonight. My family and I decided to stop by for Restaurant Week given that they had an amazing 3 course meal for only $15! The place is easy enough to find, there is parking on the street and a paid lot on 4th and main just a block away. We had never been before and found it confusing upon entering the establishment. It was unclear whether we sat and were approached or we ordered at the bar and it was brought out to us etc. After getting the attention of a staff member we learned we needed to grab a seat... I would recommend putting a sign out that says 'find a seat' or something to imply they WILL be with you once you find a table. Our waiter seemed to either hate us or his job. I'm assuming he was just tired from a busy day or maybe just over restaurant week, but that kind of thing shows to customers and makes for an unpleasant experience. Food -- sweet sweet food. We ordered several things off their menu. Here were our takeaways... Brisket Chili - yummy, I would order again, but i share the sentiment of other reviewers... the cornbread slice was really tiny Penny's Salad - lotttta lettuce for not a lot of toppings... the smoked beets were nice Poutine Fries - felt like our order sat out for a while before being delivered which made majority of the fries very soggy. Good flavors though! Beef Brisket / Pulled Pork - Both were really good. I would return solely based on their meats. Pecan Pie - very lack luster... it was very dry, the crust was chewy, and the pecan filling just crumbled Banana Pudding - again lack luster, tasted very artificial (think banana laffy taffy). I believe it could be improved by using vanilla pudding and adding more bananas and vanilla wafers. Overall a very mediocre experience for food. We would return only for their smoked meats, and for the fact that they were probably overworked from restaurant week. OH! Got a nice deal on Groupon for $50 worth of gift cards for $25 so we jumped at the chance to try a new bbq joint downtown. I will start by saying the patio is awesome. Other than that, we weren't really impressed at all. The parking is not good. They are sandwiched between two parking lots and you can't park in either one. We have to park a ways down on the street and walk. The drinks and beers are good. The poutine fries were really good. The fries were really crispy. I would get those again. We ordered the platter so that we could try a little bit of everything since we had never been there. There was a very small piece of chicken. Sucks because that was the best thing on the tray. The brisket was good, but it was very fatty. The pork was very fatty too. The hush puppies tasted good but they were very dry. The Mac & Cheese looked so good in photos but it had a really weird taste that took a while to place. Finally I guessed that it was onion. Which is odd because there usually isn't onion in Mac & Cheese. Sure enough, I dug through and came across sautéed onions. Not a good flavor for Mac & Cheese in my opinion. The sauces were ok. Out of the 5 on the table the only one I liked was the vinegar one. We never saw our waitress again after we ordered. The guy who took our check took forever to figure out how to run the gift card. Ended up not even getting the full $25 since he pieced together what he could to take off as close to $25 as he could. Sweet baby rays this food was amazing. We went on a day day evening and was seated immediately. Our waitress was the sweetest and recommended all of our meals and drinks. Every item on my plate was seasoned with love. The ribs were juicy and moist, the fries were crisp, and the cornbread was buttery and soft. The only thing I did not like about the cornbread is I tasted more butter and the cornmeal. Other than that, everything was delicious. I would give five stars, but at $44 the pound, it is quite a bit more expensive than similarly excellent brisket from some other places I know in town. I wanted to like Pecan Penny's - I really did. I've seen it across the street from Sidebar Columbus (one of our favorite restaurants anywhere) many times. And I've read the glowing reviews. Eh... it was OK. We came for lunch. $48 including tip for 2 people, no drinks. Almost everything was a la cart. Their prices were a little high and portions were a little small. The hamburger was tasty. Not exceptional, but tasty. The roasted chicken was good. The mac & cheese was greasy (from a lot of colby or cheddar), but not sumptuous and it had a weird onion taste that was slightly offputting and not endearing. The greens were OK, though under-seasoned. The cornbread was uninspired and generic. The banana pudding was OK, but probably from a box. All in all, nothing was bad but nothing was exceptional, and for a $24/person lunch something should have been exceptional. Nothing was. My mother always said "Freddy, you can say something nice about anything", and she was right. OK - the interior and exterior spaces, with multiple garage doors that make the inside and outside seamless - are REALLY COOL, as are the numerous outdoor firepits. It's very cool space. My wife always says I'm more generous with Yelp stars when I've been drinking, and she's probably right, too. Maybe that was the strategic mistake... I might have thought better of their food (or cared less) if I was sitting on their patio, in the evening, around a fire pit, laughing with friends, and halfway through my second cocktail when the food arrived. If you're looking for BBQ, I would give Pecan Penny's a try. The prices on their menu are a bit expensive ( all of the entrees/ meats don't come with sides so that's a la carte). I would recommend coming on mondays (that's when they have 0.50 cent wing night, which are usually more than $1 each). They have other daily specials the rest of the week , but those are more drink specials than food specials. The wings had a dry rub seating on them and were pretty decent sized. You could taste a hint of smoke on them, which I liked. The seasoning itself didn't have much flavor, but there are bbq sauces on the table (I'm not a fan of sweet bbq sauce and thankfully there were some vinegar based ones). I'll be honest, I had high hopes for Pecan Penny's, but was let down. We came here at 12:30 on a Sunday. They open at 11am for brunch. We were the only CUSTOMERS there. She informed me there was no lettuce but the manager was on his way to the store now and I could wait if I wanted. I had already known this was the case, but wasn't told until our other items were here. I told her I'll just eat the nachos because our food would get cold. The nachos were fine. Not many toppings. The small spoonful of gauc and sprinkle of salsa was sad. After a couple minutes the queso had started to stiffen, telling me it wasn't that hot to begin with. After we were both finsihed, I was told the salad was ready if I still wanted it to-go or to eat. I was under the impression that I would be paying for it so I declined. Overall, I thought the experience was disappointing. They had been open prior to us arriving so I'm not sure why they didn't know there was no lettuce. The greens were perfect for me. They had the right amount of heat. The cheddar grits didn't have any cheddar they were white. The pickle garnish was excellent. Back to the meat it was very small portion. Very small. The manger saw we were struggling with the food and offered us a side of potato salad and it seemed to be dill base. I like more of a mustard style. It was white. Banana pudding was the dessert. It was the highlight of the meal. You must know I don't like banana pudding but I just wanted to get out the box and it was the bomb. It was so good I got another. They could add more waffer if I'm picky.. I have had high hopes for Pecan Penny's since the first article I read about it, probably over a year ago. We tried to eat there on Monday night but they are closed on Mondays so we went again on Tuesday. We LOVED the vibe at Pecan Penny's. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks on the outside and the design is super stylish and hip. They have two firepits that I'm looking forward to enjoying when the weather is cool. All of that being said, this was a 3 star experience. First of all, you have to order your food at a takeout line but then if you want drinks you order those separately. You can open a tab but we were put off by their ordering process. The food was just mediocre. The setup reminded me of Smoked on High but the quality just wasn't that great. I got a small pile of pulled pork that seemed really overpriced. My fiance got the brisket and he said it was just okay. I got a cucumber side salad and it was a definite no go. It looked okay at first but it was in a little cup of water and it was pretty unappealing. It had a spicy kick to it but I definitely wouldn't order it again. The best item of the night was the bread. It was super tasty and we both agreed we would have liked to have just had more of that over anything else. The drink menu was pretty decent. They had a lot of items on draft and wine and cocktail selections. They also have two different slushy options that are alcohol free but you can have liquor added if you like. Fantastic BBQ spot in the downtown area with smoked meats , delicious sides, and great drink selection. Took a bike ride here (easily accessible from Scioto Mile, bike rack out front) on a Monday to try their 1$ wing special. Wings have to be ordered in quantities of 5 or 10. Sauces are not tossed on the wings but there are 5 different BBQ style sauces at your table. The smoked flavor combined with the crisp skin from being fried, these wings were phenomenal!!! Absolutely worth every penny! This was also happy hour and we chose to get the chips and guacamole which was half off! Couldn't give 5 stars only because the service, while not terrible wasn't very attentive especially since they were not busy . I want to start off the service was great, our server was very attentive and that's really hard to find these days, she did a great job. The restaurant was empty at 6:30 on a Friday on a holiday weekend which was wild. I ordered a lot of different things. The chips and dip trio was OK, chips were good, guacamole was very good. Queso was definitely some weird velveeta mixup. The burger I had was not served as listed on the menu and was not very good, overloaded with mayo and soggy. The onion rings were really undercooked which was not good. My son's waffle fries were super good. Mac n cheese was noodles with the velveeta queso on top- weird.
