I brought in two pairs of booties, one needing a rubber tap placed over the plastic heel that makes a reached when I walk. I asked the cost and was very satisfied (this used to cost $5 in the '80's when there were at least 3 cobblers - that's what we used to call "shoe repair" shops - within 3 blocks of my downtown Boston office. It id more expensive now, but a very fair price all these years later). My second pair was Dr Martens boots that I've worn down enough that they're dangerously slippery. After looking closely, the suggestion was to remove and replace the whole sole. That was expensive, about 1/2 the price of a new pair. So, we kept talking. and Ron suggested filing down the front of the sole slightly to create a bit more traction, and replacing only the back quarter at the heel, since that tread is fully worn away. That should be only about 1/3-1/2 the price - and it's a great compromise! Also, if that doesn't solve the problem we can still replace the rest of the bottom. This was a thoughtful resolution, and genuine customer service: let's address the problem in a cost effective way.

I spoke to Jim on the phone to book the service, and he was really friendly and helpful. He said his wife Rose would be in touch with a quote after I texted some pictures of the room. I don't know who I was texting with in the end. They quoted me $100. The two workers arrived right on time, were very polite, and did a beautiful job! However, they spoke no English and used a phone app to communicate. (You speak into the phone, they read the Portuguese that's generated, then they speak into the phone and it spits out English. Who knows how accurate it is.) I lived in a foreign country for 6 years and while I wasn't fluent, I had some proficiency in the language... admittedly I worked in an industry where people spoke English, but for day-to-day things I was glad I could read and handle basic conversations. (This was pre-smart phone.) I'd love to hire Rose's Cleaning for their organizing service, but can't imagine how you'd do that with someone you couldn't talk to. They get good reviews for that, so maybe I'll try it. I'm skeptical but interested. If all you need is cleaning it probably doesn't matter that no one can speak to each other without a phone translator. Their work was beautiful and they were punctual and polite. All of that is great.

I questioned their scale an mentioned I had much more they told me call their purchasing agent for a better price. I called and had to leave a message, same as last year, no call back this time, same as last time. So 1/14/25 I called Heavy Metal Recycling, Louie took my call Very professionally he questioned my load and said Brass shells were paying $1.80-$1.90 a pound and he would have to see it. Yesterday I showed up with 1013lbs (per my scale) of brass. Louie had a man set up a large box and weighed the empty box in front of me, next had me dump the brass into the box as they inspected some of it. They put it back on the scale and said 1014lbs and said he would go $1.85lb, I was super happy, all three men I spoke to were very kind and pleasant, the yard was very clean and I'm looking forward to my next trip there. Small list, Heavy Metal Recycling it closer to me than my other yard, they pay better, (I went home and called my old yard for some quotes), and they were not offended when asked to see the scale. But best of all they will sell also, my old yard in Worcester will not sell.

These were used in Test Fixtures, Assembly jigs, & Heat Sinks all were high quality ALU to meet contract requirements. SMR only paid sheet rates like it was common aluminum siding even though it was not and were things clean. Very much ripped off our disposal crews by doing so.
