I was told to stop here while I was in Rock Island and I'm soooo happy that I did! It was FANTASTIC! So the food was soooooo good. I had ordered the meat pie as well as the shrimp po boy. The meat pie is made to order! I mean how many places does that!? The shrimp po boy was so flavorful and fresh. I haven't had one so good since being in the NOLA. The remoulade sauce was so... freaking... good. The owner was very friendly. She talked to us while we waited and was very kind. If I hear another person complaining about how expensive it is here I'm going to snap. It is a little expensive... BUT!! I am happy to pay more for a locally owned place that is serving food that isn't on 99% of the menus in the QC. Mayyyybe the best greens in the area- if not the best definitely the most consistent. (The other contender is Juniors in East Moline, but my last trips there they had run out.) I've had most of the menu and it is all amazing. I'm a sucker for soul food. Some of it I have to take a hard pass on - here's looking at you ham hocks and pigs' feet - but sign me up for some fried fish, collard greens, ribs, mac and cheese, ox tail or a Po Boy. I was there a little early for lunch and when I walk through the door I am the only patron in there. I don't think much of it and that changes soon after. People are calling in to-go orders - I'm greeted with a smile and get the indication I'll be taken care of soon as he finishes up the order. I didn't look over the menu prior to getting there, so it gave me time to make a decision. Let's go back to being greeted with a smile. Smiles are infectious. Kindness is infectious. It isn't always the case, but I feel if you treat others with kindness, they will return the kindness and hopefully pass it forward. Everyone who walked through the door of Pee Wee's was greeted with a smile. Not some bogus half smile - a full-on genuine, welcome longtime friend smile. Others who came in were also smiling and chatting with each other. Decor is cute and the restaurant is very clean. If restaurant owners/managers don't care enough to keep the front of house clean, how can I trust the kitchen is clean? No concerns here. I ordered the Catfish Po Boy. For those who don't know, a Po Boy is much like a sub sandwich but generally filled with fried seafood. One might argue the bread is too soft for a traditional Po Boy, but I prefer softer bread so all the good stuff ends up in my mouth and not on my plate. The breading on the catfish was great - not too heavy and the sauce had just the right amount of kick. My husband and I traveled to the Quad Cities area to entertain a job offer. While he was touring their facilities, I decided to catch Lyfts around the area to see what our potential new area had to offer. I discovered Pee Wees and also that it is located on "Martin Luther King Jr. Drive" so I already knew what that meant! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a sweet woman and immediately realized she was the owner. We made a lot of conversation while I was there since I was dining in, and I honestly felt like she was one of my aunties. She was just so sweet and friendly! Wow! Just .....wow! I've been passing by this place every other weekend and the GF and I finally decided to stop in to try it out. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but its hiding a TRUE GEM of Rock Island. If you want "soul food" that has the soul of southern style cooking, then you don't have to look any further! The inside is small, but very clean, bright, and has soul and classic music playing. We ate in, but just by the amount of traffic we saw, they obviously do a lot of takeout business too. The staff is super-friendly, very down-to-earth, and direct, but genuine. After talking to a guy in particular about how we almost stopped by a couple Mondays but found that they were closed, we found out that he is the owner (or one of the owners, seems its all family run) and makes runs into Chicago for the food they need on Mondays. Gumbo, smothered chicken, po'boy's, etc are all part of the menu. I had the smothered chicken as it was a "weekend only" deal, along with cornbread, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. IT WAS ALL DECADENT! Delicious! The flavors were amazing! The chicken itself was literally falling off the bones. My GF had fried chicken and it was just as delicious! This is a place that could be very addictive as its just down the street from her place and they do take out, but we will have to watch ourselves as it could be bad for our waistlines. My wife and I were looking for a new place to try and found this on Yelp. We were greeted at the counter by Wilhelmina (did I spell that correctly?) and immediately engaged in lively conversation. She introduced us to her son, Will, back in the kitchen who filled us in on the story of the place and its staff. We also talked happily about the menu and about food in general. Our visit was as much about happy socializing as about dining. I had the smothered chicken which included an entire half of the bird, bones and all, green beans, and mashed taters. Didn't need gravy as that's what the chicken is smothered in. It was a genuine feast that fed me again for the next night's supper. It was the definition of "comfort food ". My wife had the snapper, also enough to make two meals. She also tried a piece of sweet potato praline pie which was exotic to us northern Illinois folk, but delicious. We'll be back. The best place you've never heard of! The soul food is done so well! We had a Po' Boy, Fried Chicken, Cornbread, Coleslaw (was that thyme we tasted?!), Mac n Cheese, & the Peach Cobbler - everything made from scratch, made to order, and packed with flavor. And don't even get me started on the people running this restaurant - sincerely the nicest people. We felt like family and that seems so hard to come by these days. The owner recommended we take our food down to the nearby Sunset Marina & Park for a picnic and I'm so glad we took his advice.
