It's clear this bar is popular with the locals - in fact, a few of them noted the influx of us visitors who weren't "the regulars." The best part - the drinks are cheap. I'm a big believer in reviewing things for what they are on Yelp. Peep Hole isn't a cocktail lounge, nor a hip club, nor a dance party venue. However, it is a neighborhood bar located in a pretty central/downtown area (from my observations of Evansville). Going on a Thursday night in November, it seemed to be the most "happening" bar in the area. We stopped in after a show, and we immediately found a table and were met by a server. Our drinks were promptly delivered, and they were VERY affordable. It's a low key, chill bar, and it doesn't seem to act any other way. There was some outdoor seating/a patio available, which I bet is nice when it's warm outside. There were lots of beards and flannel shirts, but this chill place seems welcome to all types of people. Plus, the name is amusing. I'd go back, and the inexpensive costs definitely take it to four stars for me. read more

We stopped in with some friends to eat & drink a little before the Dolly Parton concert at The Ford Center. It was a Wednesday night & we arrive around 5:35pm. The concert started at 7:30pm & we figured the place wouldn't be too busy. I guess we had the same thought as others, because the place was packed. Peephole Bar is located in the downtown, historical district of Evansville. Growing up in Owensboro, the most of Evansville I saw was the mall/Lloyd expressway. Recently I've been to 'Someplace Else' which is in the general vicinity, but a different type of bar if you get what I mean (insert girl hair flip emoticon here). Peephole is located in an older building. Some people call it a dive bar, but I don't really see that. They've got a large section of different craft beers. We entered & sat ourselves. I'm not sure if that's how it goes or not, as that night there was only one bartender, one server & one guy working the kitchen, more on that later. We picked the last 4 top table for our group of 4. We were greeted by a female server who was friendly, but a little flustered. We ordered a well bourbon & diet & a gin and tonic ($2.78 a piece). The drinks were strong & cheap, just like me. We ordered fried pickles ($4.75) & fried mushrooms ($4.25). Both are served with ranch. I'd order the pickles again, but not so much on the mushrooms, too much breading for me. I ordered a single cheese burger ($4) & onion rings ($3.50) as a side. The drinks might be cheap, but the fixing for the burgers & sides can add up. $1 for banana peppers? This is where the 3 people working comes back in play. We ordered at 5:45, we didn't get our food until nearly 7pm. I understand it can be hard when you're short staffed, but maybe they should take into account when Ford Center is having something & schedule more people. We rushed to eat our food & made it up the street with moments to spare before Dolly it the stage. My burger was your average bar food burger. The onion rings were great, very crispy & a nice crunch. The tater tots by boyfriend got were overcooked, like you'd bite into them & they crunched but seemed hollow. It was very odd. We got our bill & were charged one too many bourbons & gins. We only realized the gin at first & had it corrected, then noticed the bourbon, but had to leave. I'd come back for the pickles, onion rings & drinks. read more

Stopped by today at 11 when they opened. Walked in to people sitting at the bar smoking. They quickly put out their smokes. I asked the girl behind the bar if the place was now smoking? She said no. I got a coke and a menu but sitting there I realized it was badly Smokey and I was going to go back to work smelling. So I told her I was going to leave for that reason. Cool enough place, not really a dive imo but a tight watering hole, stopped in on a Sat night, place was busy but not crazy. Traffic is moving in and out and was able to find a spot after 10 min or so standing at the bar. Couple of guys firing on my wife saw me and bought us drinks afterwards, bonus! I stopped by here around 2 p.m. on a Saturday. I wanted a nice and chill dive bar in downtown Evansville. I wasn't disappointed. It was exactly that. They had a pretty unique draft beer selection. I had a couple of delicious IPA's from Dogfish brewery. We also ordered some onion rings that were fried to perfection. This is my favorite bar in town. The staff are always so nice and friendly and welcoming to new comers and regulars alike. BUT BEWARE these guys do heavy pours. If you're looking to get smashed with only a few cheap drinks, this is the place for you! Excellent prices, and good quality drinks. They've always got interesting craft beers on tap. The food is worth the wait, and the chili is legendary. You'll always find local art on the walls, and it's just an all around fun place. Blame it on downtown's gentrification. This is no longer a dive. But that's really a good thing. I was regularly here (but not a "regular") back when there were bars on the windows and emphysema in the air. If you had to go poop, one of your buds would have to stand guard because there was no door on the men's toilet room. There was a sweet a** CD jukebox with Welfare Music. The service was AWFUL then. Night and day compared to now. There's still just tavern food from the deep fryer and grill, but it is hardly a dive. Craft beer. A literate clientele and staff. It's really as cosmopolitan as Evansville gets. read more

Oh, Evansville, my childhood home! I returned to you as an adult and found you to be....lacking. What happened? Evansville? I remember an abundance of soccer, trees to be climbed, tag to be played, and sprinklers to be ran through. Going back 20 years later I found you had not much in the way of fun things for grownups to do. Some University, a couple of bars, a river, some ice cream. And then....Peep Hole happened, and it happened all over our good time. Peep Hole has an eclectic clientele. Their customer base seems to be all over the place and is really hodge podge, so of course I like it! The jukebox is killer. I heard metal, indie, jazz, punk, emo, and everything under the sun. Also, East Coast rap (because I played it). The beer and the drinks cost the same. 4 drinks was $13 bucks. So I, being me, stuck to booze because, ya know, why bother with beer when it costs the same as vodka and the only thing to do in Evansville is drink until it's fun. EFFICIENCY, PEOPLE! EFFICIENCY! It gets pretty crowded on the weekend and everybody seems to know each other by name. By the end of the night, you will also know everybody by name and want to spend more time there. There's a couple of video games, a popcorn vending machine, they have a grill and they also serve frozen pizzas late late, so that's good. Long story short (or tl;dr, per the parlance of our times, dude) cheap drinks made strongly, amazing and wonderful people, great juke box, they will feed you late. Why would you not go? Seriously. Why would you not? Where else are you going to go in evansville? A meth lab on a soccer field? Nah. Just go to peep hole and have a good time. read more

I used to really love the Peephole, the owner was so nice and friendly, there were knicknacks everywhere, PBR on tap...the place was truely a dive bar. After she passed away a group of local business people bought the place, and pretty much changed everything I liked about the old place. The waitress/bartender that has worked there since day one has the worst attitude of anyone in the service industry I've every encountered. We stopped by for a drink last night and I don't think we'll be going back again because of her bad attitude and poor service (well poor service to us but not to her 'friends'.) Oh the good old peephole. One of my go to watering holes in evansville for many years and years to come. Ecclectic mix of clientele. From downtown office workers, lawyers etc, hipsters and everyone in between. Great bartenders who really know how to pour a drink. I have been here a couple of times. I like the crowd. It does not feel like a tourist spot at all. The staff and the regulars are so social that at the end of the night you feel like a regular. You can tell the love their peephole and the peeps that visit. I met a bartender McCabe who was white and young enough to be my son, I am black and he played ol skook funk on the jukebox for me until three in the morning. Jeff the bartender and the cute chick in the cat eye glasses were awesome and efficient bartenders. Cory and the other bikers with the long beards were real. It was kindred spirit time. Let's be honest: Evansville isn't the coolest city in the world. But the Peephole is a solid bar, boasting a great jukebox and a good range of beer on tap. When most people go out for a drink, they are looking for atmosphere and a sense of community. The Peephole fulfills these needs. If you go there on a Friday night, expect to find it fairly crowded and full of cigarette smoke. I never became a regular because it often gets a little too smoky for my blood, but in contrast to the previous poster, I've always had good service there, whether or not I'm out with regulars. read more
