This is one of those Stockholm institutions that feels like it should be part of the itinerary if you're trying to experience traditional Swedish food. Unfortunately, for most of the meal, the food itself didn't fully live up to the reputation. We ordered a pretty broad range of dishes. The herring was a bit of a miss for us and felt messy rather than memorable. The girls had the meatballs and a mushroom dumpling dish, but neither one really enjoyed their meal. Both dishes leaned very salty, to the point where it took away from the overall experience. I ordered the venison, which was fine, but not particularly special. It was one of those dishes that was technically okay, but didn't make me want to keep eating. I honestly didn't finish it. Mia ordered the cod, which looked good, but again, it didn't feel like anything spectacular or especially memorable. What completely changed the tone of the experience was the service. Toward the end of the meal, our server noticed that I hadn't eaten much. Without making a big deal out of it and without me asking for anything, he brought over a steak with potatoes and fries. That dish was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. More importantly, the gesture itself was incredibly thoughtful. That kind of hospitality is rare. He didn't have to do it. I wasn't complaining, and I wasn't expecting anything. I was prepared to leave the meal as-is. But the fact that he noticed and cared enough to make the experience better says a lot about the service and the professionalism of the staff. So while the original food we ordered was hit-or-miss, the service elevated the evening in a major way. The meal itself may not have been excellent across the board, but the hospitality was. For me, this ends up being a four-star experience: not because every dish landed, but because the staff turned what could have been a disappointing dinner into something memorable. read more

Pelikan is an over 120 years old, located at 40-Blekinge-Gatan (street) in Stockholm Sweden. Pelikan's look and feel is Art Nouveau, making it a really lovely and inspired restaurant. Pelikan is one of the few good restaurants in Stockholm that still serve traditional home-style Swedish food, so I come here more than once almost every time I visit my family. So, since my first visit to Sweden in 1985 I've actually eaten here alone or with my family around seven times. Among the favorite dishes here are the: Herring Plate (4 types), Toast Skagen (Tiny Sweet Shrimp with Mayonnaise on Toast), Thick Fried 'Salted' Bacon in Onion Sauce, The Duck, Every piece of Fish here is good. Other favorites are the Saddle of Reindeer with Lingonberries, Pork Knuckle with Potato Dumplings, and of course their Kottbullar (Swedish Meatballs) with Lingonberries. My friend and I visited while on vacation -- but what happened left us hurt and embarrassed. When we arrived, we waited in the foyer for about 10 minutes. There were open tables and several servers walking by, but no one greeted or acknowledged us. We're both larger people, dressed neatly and comfortably in pink sweaters, black pants, and sneakers -- just normal tourists. Everyone else inside was thin and dressed in dark or neutral colors, and from the moment we walked in, it felt like we didn't belong. When I finally asked if we could be seated, the waitress ignored me. I asked again a few minutes later and she reluctantly sat us, then moved our table four times, farther and farther from other guests, even though there was plenty of room. It was strange and humiliating. It was clear they didn't want us there. We tried to order but were ignored. When I finally asked to our meal to go, the manager came back three separate times to confirm I still wanted it. When I asked for napkins and cutlery to eat outside, they refused and walked away. We ended up sitting on a bench outside, eating with toothpicks from the bar next door. The food was OK, but the way we were treated -- especially as larger guests -- was awful. We were polite, clean, and quiet, and yet we were made to feel like an inconvenience simply for existing in their space. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone who values kindness or basic respect. read more

We were looking for good, authentic Swedish food, and I think we hit the spot. We made a reservation for 4 people on a Wednesday at 6:30 pm, although I think we would have been able to sit even without a reservation. We started with the Toast Skagen, which was a shrimp salad that comes with toast. The salad was baby shrimp in creamy sauce with a nice dill flavor, and it's perfect with the slightly salted toast and a touch of lemon juice. We also had the cured salmon, which also came topped with dill and had a slight salt seasoning which was just right. The arctic char was cooked perfectly with a juicy interior, and came with an herb butter sauce which was tempting to eat on its own. The highlight of the meal though was the Swedish meatballs, which come with a buttery gravy and are complemented with lingonberries and pickles, making for a perfect combination of salty, sweet, and acidic. I'd say the restaurant is a bit pricey, but the portion sizes are decently big and the quality of the food is excellent. All the dishes were heavy on butter, but maybe that's just how Swedish food is. Also, our service was excellent, and our waitress was excellent with our young kids. Overall, it was a great experience and we will definitely come back if we're ever back in Stockholm. read more

If you are looking for old time, authentic Swedish food this is your place. Our Swedish friends hadn't had many of these dishes since their childhood. And our waiter told us lots of "old guys" come in for their food. In June, it is a little warm inside but the murals and general aesthetic of the place was great. Very pleasant , warm and inviting. Our servers were very convivial, helpful and humorous. It was my favorite meal in Stockholm. Everything was delicious. The men share the set menu that had pairings of alcohol with each course. Loved it. We came here after seeing the menu and me just really trying to find the most original/Swedish food I could find to truly take in my whole experience of my trip. After booking a quick reservation here, I was super glad that I did! I would definitely recommend to book a reservation as this place filled up and finding a table by just walking in, is a slim chance to none especially on a weekend. Getting that out of the way lets get to what I ordered. I originally planned on coming here specifically to eat the herring. So because of that I shared the SOS which was herring 4 types of flavors. And I think that's what made that dish for me. It would go amazing on bread but also just good in general. The dinner came with complimentary bread so that was perfect to go with this appetizer. Following that we ordered two mains. The meatballs along with the reindeer. We've had meatballs before but these were big, and with the sauce just awesome. It was super flavorful and I would say the best we had during the duration of our trip. The reindeer was just like steak, super tender and flavorful with surprisingly not big gamey flavor as you would taste with deer. The meat sort of just melted in your mouth and with the cheese along with the sauce it was awesome. Overall, I would say if you're looking for authentic swedish food and want an experience in eating the culture this place is a have to go to restaurant. For our first night in Stockholm we were looking for a classic Swedish restaurant & looking online there were obviously many to choose from so we decided on Pelikan based on all of the great reviews it has received. The second we walked in we were immediately impressed with the atmosphere & the good vibe we felt. After having a cocktail we decided we'd order an appetizer( 4 kinds of Herring ) and for the main course we got the Duck & Reindeer. Everything was excellent especially the Herring. Our server did a nice job of explaining all of our options and giving us some recommendations. The only downside to this restaurant is the tables are extremely close to each other so you won't get a lot of privacy especially when they're busy which likely is most of the time & the prices are just a bit on the high side but the atmosphere, food & service makes it all worthwhile. read more

There were four different varieties of cured herring; cured with sweet vinegar, herb-based (dill?) sauce, one with chopped onion, and another one that I couldn't quite identify. The potato dumplings were much much nicer done the name might convey. The dumpling skin was chewy and was different than Anything else I have taste it before. It was not quite like Italian ravioli, gnocchi, or various types of Chinese dim sum dumplings. Veggie-based filling felt quite meaty. I believe it's based on mushrooms. I definitely recommend eating here. It has all the must try Swedish foods (meatballs, reindeer, herring, dumplings). The complimentary bread had a hint of anise so it had a liquorice taste, which may sound weird (for a non Scandinavian), but it was really good. The meatballs were huge, super flavorful. It comes with lingonberries and pickled cucumber slices. The mashed potatoes was shared with the table. Speaking as a tourist, this restaurant is a must visit for anyone visiting Stockholm. The menu is traditional swedish, but many of the entrees and starters have broad appeal. The only downsides is they sell out of items, like the asparagus soup that I wanted to try and another dish. Also the hall is quite noisy. Finally, no one wears a mask, and to be fair that's the case here in Stockholm. So if you're squirrely about COVID you might want to try eating outside at the benches. We took the risk... Make sure you get the off menu appetizer of the shrimp ball with dill. We didn't know about this and regretted it. We came for the meatballs and the meatballs were st stellar. If you eat meat, you need to get these in your belly. The beer selection is pretty robust too, so make sure you grab a brew. Make sure you get the creme brulee for dessert, normally I don't eat it, but theirs was outstanding Service was very accommodating, and thankfully like many people here, the staff speak English very well. read more

Came for dinner with my family and we thoroughly enjoyed our first real taste of Swedish food. For our party of four we ordered to share: + 1/2 order herring sampler (I've tried Dutch raw herring before and didn't like it but I liked the mustardy pickled flavor of the herring here! The different sauces in the sampler were unique and paired great with the potatoes) + 1/2 order toast skagan (delicious shrimps! The creme fraiche and dill were great additions and tjis went great with the bread for the table) + potato pancake (I liked the roe a lot and thought the pairing of the creme fraiche + red onion tasted great with the potato and roe) + cod with shrimps, egg and horseradish (cod just melted in my mouth) + Swedish meatballs (so soft and tender, berries were such a great complement to the gravy and beautifully mashed potatoes) Ambience is nice and rustic with wood paneling and open flame candles. He took drink orders for me and my sister, and then ran away before my girlfriend had even opened her mouth. The meatballs were twice the size of a meatball, and had the taste and texture of meatloaf. The ambiance of our table was sitting at an intersection of two intersecting highways in an echo chamber. This is classic Swedish food, executed perfectly! The ambiance in the restaurant is beautiful--kind of reminiscent of a German pub, but more refined. Coming in for dinner one night, we were seated right away, and our kind server went over the menu with us and gave us really nice recommendations! We started our meal with the SOS herring sampler appetizer--a half order came with two pieces of four different kinds of herring: the regular herring, mustard herring, pickled herring, and cheese herring--these small pieces of fish varied in flavor but were all perfect for eating with the cracker bread on the table. My favorite dish of the night, however, was definitely the cured moose carpaccio appetizer, which our server fervently recommended. The thin slices of meat had a dark, gamey flavor unlike anything I've had before--the umami undertones were brought over the edge with the Swedish cheese and pickled mushrooms that accompanied the carpaccio! For our main course, we shared the roasted reindeer, which was extremely lean and, surprisingly for me, not particularly flavorful (definitely not gamey). The texture was extremely interesting (it felt almost like a piece of cooked liver), but most of the flavor of the dish came from the mushroom gravy and the sweet rowan berry jelly that was dolloped on the side. All of this was served with a layered potato cake, which was a great complement to the meat. Overall, Pelikan was a fantastic restaurant with really interesting Swedish dishes--this is definitely a place to visit for meats and ingredients you'd be hard-pressed to find in most other places outside Sweden! read more

This was the best food place we went to in Stockholm. There were other places that had better views and some really great dishes, but the food at Pelikan was most excellent. I had the cod. Now, we have all had the smelly and fishy tasting cod. You know the kind: the little Debbie fish cakes that are formed into a square and are made out of dry flakes. This is not that cod. This cod is moist and melts like butter in your mouth. This cod when mixed with dill, horse radish, baby shrimp and egg is heavenly. Obviously, the Swedes have been working this recipe for generations, and now they have got it down. This explains why the Swedes are so tall: they eat cod. I am 6-4 and i keep running into men and women alike that are just as tall if not taller than me. They eat cod to maximize their height: got to be the reason. I have eaten the Swedish meatballs in town twice since being here. So, I passed on the meatballs. I then thought I was going to go with the reindeer because where and when are you going to eat reindeer? Being a pescatarian, I decided to go with the cod. Not due to being a non-meat eater, but because I was not sure that my stomach could handle the shock of all the good reindeer. When traveling I eat what the local culture serves. Three reasons why: 1.) It is polite to eat what the local culture serves. Why be a jerk and ask for food they do not normally serve? 2.) I want to experience the culture, and food is a large part of the culture. 3.) You make the locals cook food that they are not used to and you are going to get sick. Magnificent traditional Swedish cuisine in a museum quality room. * * * Pelikan is one of the oldest restaurants in Stockholm. It takes on the mantle of "Defender of the Great Traditions of Centuries Old Cuisine." Pelikan has moved multiple times, including leaving the Old City for the trendier Southern neighborhood of Sodermalm. Being out of the Old City allows Pelikan to escape the floods of tourists that swarm the Old City like locusts. Pelikan's dignity is further enhanced by a remarkable collection of nineteenth and early twentieth century Swedish realist painting. The masterpieces hang right there in the dining room. Swedish painting does not get any of the respect that is customarily attributed to Swedish modern design. But they had many painters who were quite fine. Of particular note is a massive Courbet like portrait of two fishermen in a dinghy on a choppy sea that is a powerful alternative to a traditional seascape. * * * How is the food? Absolutely superb. Swedish food follows the British model. Simple ingredients. Well prepared. Okay, with herring they go crazy all over the place. Everything else is simple and well prepared. I had a boiled pig knuckle with a selection of mustards and a side-dish of mashed rutabaga. It was an absolutely classic night of eating. The pig knuckle may be a simple dish, but it is an unusual one and one you will never see in the United States. Issue Number One: The Pig Knuckle is brined like a corned beef. Corned beef is best when it is fatty. Pork is far fattier than beef. Translation - you are getting a higher quality corned beef than you will ever get from a cow. Of course, it is much harder to boil a pig knuckle than it is to make corned beef. Corned beef. You stick it in brine. You boil it. You eat it. Boiling time is easy to figure out since you have a simple rectangular block of meat. A pig knuckle is a test of the cook's skill. It is irregular. It is filled with bone. Every knuckle has a different shape and has a different ratio of fat to meat. If either the meat or the fat is undercooked, it will be tough. If the meat is overcooked, it will be stringy and flavorless. So boiling a knuckle is a question of precise timing. Plus you assiduously have to draw off all the excess fat. Well the cooks at Pelikan have worked through all the complexities and turn out a pig knuckle whose both meat and fat are done to the peak of tenderness and flavor. And that means OH MY GOD. Putting mustard on this magnificent corned pork seemed like a crime. For a long time, I just sat bathing my senses in all of this pure pork flavor unadulterated by anything out of a jar. No Jewish or Irish corned beef comes anywhere near to what Swedish corned pork can be. However, the mustard is a lot of fun and I ended up playing quite a bit with the mustard pots as well. Keep in mind a pig's knuckle is huge. Restaurant management claims that traditionally a pig's knuckle serves three. At the restaurant, every diner who orders knuckle gets their own full knuckle. This is somewhat like serving someone who ordered roast turkey their own entire roast turkey. Quantity has never stopped Samuel C. from enjoying the great pleasures of life. It took me two and a half hours, but I consumed that entire pork knuckle from back to front leaving nothing but bare bone. Two and a half hours of contemplative worship of the Great Pork God. I believe, I believe, I believe. * * * Now technically, the pork knuckle was the SECOND best dish I had that night at Pelikan. The best dish by far was the mashed rutabagas. Swedes eat turnips and rutabagas. Americans don't. The Swedes have us completely beat on this one. They fall back on all of the good tricks associated with making good mashed potatoes. Use really good rutabagas. Use really good milk. Use vast amounts of wonderful butter. Mash to make everything light, fluffy and smooth. An old grandmother's trick is to add just a soupcon of sugar to the mashed rutabaga. They do that here. Any one who has made Cream of Wheat with butter and sugar know that combining anything hot and creamy with butter and sugar makes food for the gods. Rutabaga has an edgy enough flavor to cut through the butter AND to cut through all of that pork fat you are eating. It is a complete palate cleanser. The pork knuckle sends you to cholesterol hell. The rutabagas purge your system and take you back to vegetable piety. But they do it with butter and milk so you have a good time. Pork. Rutabaga. Pork. Rutabaga. As classic a Scandinavian contrast as Sauna. Avanto. Sauna. Avanto. * * * Pelikan is a temple of classic pleasures. All hail the GREAT GOD PIG! read more

Open since 1904 and undoubtedly showing its age there are plenty of opinions about Restaurant Pelikan when discussed amongst gastronomes, some seeing it as a relic while others praise the heritage, a visit on Friday afternoon finding validity to both sides of the argument but an assessment based entirely on the Food highly favorable across six items plus complimentary Bread service. In reality an entity in Stockholm since 1664, the cellar adding a Restaurant in 1733 before relocating to its current environs at Blekingegatan 40 some 114 years ago, guests entering Restaurant Pelikan in 2018 will quickly be taken by heavy wood and pale yellow walls with paintings and sconces, each table decorated by a single burning candle and menus available in both Swedish and English. Not a place for modernity or the sort of "quick service" many crave in this era, both waitresses approaching the age of retirement and pleasant despite being in no hurry, it was with a basket of Bread dropped off and room-temperature Water poured that a list of classics was perused before choices were made, two three-course meals tallying just shy of 1000 Swedish Crowns. Dining just prior to 13h00, reservations made online proving unnecessary in a space less than 25% full, it was after a short wait during which glasses ran empty that plates of Charcuterie and tiny Shrimp in Cream Sauce arrived, the later sweet with just enough Dill and salinity to give it balance while the former was highlighted by four-year old Ham and granular Cow's Milk Cheese that reminisces of Parmesan in taste and texture. Using surprisingly good Bread and condiments including house Pickles plus candied Apricots to cleanse the palate between bites, a second Basket delivered on request in addition to more Water, it was after a shorter delay than the Appetizers that two Main Courses arrived in sizable portions, the housemade Bacon resting in a pool of pungent yet pleasant Sauce while Pelikan's world-famous Meatballs were nearly twice the size of others served in Stockholm - tender, dense and rich no matter which blend of accoutrements they were consumed with. Further impressed by both boiled and whipped Potatoes, the later almost achieving Joel Robuchon consistency, it was with plates wiped clean that they were cleared in anticipation of Dessert, the heralded house Pralines nothing more than good Chocolates while the Swedish Cheesecake featured a crumbly consistency up-front that slowly melted on the palate without much intrinsic sweetness, that aspect instead left to Raisins, Cloudberries and Ice Cream. read more

The restaurant was located about 3 blocks from our hotel, and we had no idea what to expect. I glanced at the menu and ordered what everyone came here for.. when in Sweden, order the meatballs! Beautiful Swedish restaurant with a lot of history. About 20 minutes walk from the old town , the restaurant is mostly local and that is a good sign the food is solid. One patron at the bar told me to try their pork knuckle and it was fantastic! The bread was also extremely fresh and I may have over indulged. Steak tartare, reindeer, meatballs. Can't go wrong. This location I believe is almost 120 years old and has the vibe and acoustics to match. Loud, a little rough, but like a time machine. I came here for my last meal in Stockholm after reading about it in my Lonely Planet guide book. I was able to secure a reservation online and I was glad as i had done so because it was pretty packed when I had gone there. Swedish/Scandinavian food is not exactly vegetarian friendly, so all the suggestions to try their various herrings were lost on me. However, they did offer a couple of a things: a delicious cream of asparagus soup starter and a lovely potato and mushroom dumpling dish. The presentation of the dish was beautiful and the texture was unlike any other kind of dumpling I've had, at least from any other dish from any other European cuisine. If anything, the texture of the dumplings reminded me of Korean songpyeon (a type of rice cake). As for the soup, it was absolutely delicious: light, rich, and very creamy. This place was not cheap, but the service was prompt, the atmosphere beautiful and traditional, and the food good. I'd say this place is worth a visit. read more
