What gets me through the beginning-of-the-week-blues is Candlelight Flow on Tuesday nights. That,…read moreand Happy Hour Flow on Friday evenings. Oh, and 8am Vinyasa Flow on Saturday mornings. The studio is on the second floor of this old brick building in the trendy part of downtown Haverhill, where parking is ample either on the street or in the back parking lot ($.50/hr during the weekday, free after 8pm and on weekends). There's a really cute lobby area where you can leave your stuff on the benches. There's also a small curtained-off changing area. This might be weird to say, but I was also impressed by how clean and tastefully decorated the bathrooms are. But of course, the most important room is the yoga room, in which the positive and relaxing energy is almost palpable. High ceilings, dark wooden exposed beams, mustard yellow walls, and tall windows that look out onto the Merrimack River. This room beats any dingy gym I have ever taken a yoga class in. There are a ton of classes to choose from throughout the week, and the business operations of this studio run as smooth as butter. Just reserve a spot for a class online and then show up. There are a bunch of different payment and class bundle options available too. The owner, Caroline Giles is so incredibly friendly and encouraging. I also love how there are different classes for all levels of fitness and experience. I just wish classes weren't so pricey, although I think the $10/class cost is pretty average for places around here. I got a LivingSocial deal for 30 classes for $30 and it was the best 3-month break from the gym I have ever taken.

Although moving to a new town is scary, finding a Yoga studio you love is even scarier. I found…read moreYoga Tree through an amazing LivingSocial deal so I figured I'd give it a try. Yoga Tree is wonderful. The studio is comfortable and friendly. They have a variety of classes and times to choose from and it is incredibly easy to sign up online. There are a ton of workshops (which I yet to attend but its nice to know they are available). The studio provides mats, blocks, blanks, bolsters to the participants during class if needed (free of charge). There is a ton of on street and also lot parking behind the studio. I'm happy to have a new yoga home.

Used to be a decent gym for the money, but the rates have skyrocketed and the equipment has become…read moremore run down. Sauna was broken for months. There's a faucet that's been broken for months. The little "new" equipment appears to be purchased used. Overpriced, undervalued and poorly maintained. No new equipment ever, at best you get used equipment. And the owner does not reinvest properly to keep things up to date. Every week it's something different that's broken and it'll take weeks or longer for it to get fixed. But what really put it over the top was the fact that he's now charging every $50 a year as a maintenance fee. What maintenance? People are going down the street to planet fitness and they are paying $200 a year for brand new equipment in a brand new facility while he's charging $600 a year for broken down stuff. Edit - replying to owner's comments. COVID inflation has impacted everyone, including every member who pays. My bills have increased 40% since COVID, as has the bills of everyone I know. And that includes the cost of membership to HHF which has skyrocketed since COVID. It doesn't change that the value simply is not there. Down the street people are paying a 35% the price of a HHF membership for all new equipment, new facilities, and nearly 24 hours access. HHF has continually increased its membership fees year over year to the point where HHF is now within striking distance of the cost of memberships to premium facilities like Cedardale that include pools, basketball courts, all new equipment, tennis courts, working saunas, etc. As far as changing equipment goes, I will not dispute the claim regarding "selectorsized" equipment being updated 2.5 years ago. There's also a few refurbished elliptical machines replaced as well, not that they are really high quality machines. Folks I have spoken with only use them if the others are unavailable. But that's a relatively low percentage of the total equipment in the facility. There is much more equipment which are in need of replacement or, at least, better preventative maintenance: free weights are cracked or have rubber missing, step machines are old and break down frequently. Benches are too narrow or have broken/loose racks. The floor is uneven in several areas. It's not uncommon to find shims being used to keep wobbly equipment in place. I can't speak to what was done 25 years ago at HHF, and frankly I question how that is relevant to the value of the membership today. HHF provides facilities somewhere in the range of a discount gym but at 250% the cost of a discount gym. HHF is about 80% the cost of a premium facility, but provides nothing close to the facilities.

I was greeted with a huge smile by the manager, Melissa who showed me around the cleanest gym I have ever been to in my life. Started yoga classes and all kinds of others. This gym is not only 20 and 40 year old body builders. This gym is geared for everyone young and old. Everyone who I have met here, the instructors and members are so friendly, nonjudgmental and helpful. Very reasonably priced for what you get! I recommend Hampstead Heath and Fitness to everyone! Treat yourself to a great smoothie after.
