I almost didn't write this review because I don't want them to get more crowded or raise their prices, but they deserve the praise. I think they have one of the most affordable (and actually good, not crappy) pedicures in DC - it's only $29 plus they give you a free drink. The chairs are comfy and the technicians have all been very pleasant, but I wish they had a better selection of magazines. Also it just gets really crowded and sometimes you'll have to wait awhile sitting in the chair before they get to you. Note they prefer cash tips. read more

I visit Pen Nails & Spa faithfully to see Kelly every 2 weeks for a gel manicure and spa pedicure and every 4-5 weeks for Brazilian waxing. Kelly is by far the best!!! Penn's nails are amazing. They offer free drinks while you get your treatment. They do good work and are friendly and professional. Many times salons don't do a good job of messaging your feet during the pedicure. But they are awesome and spend time on your experience. Kathy is awesome. She did my nails efficiently and they look amazing. I'm definitely coming back. 40 for pedicure and manicure is a good steal. Tip: Due to how good they are, might want to make an appointment. Love that they offer beverages (wine, juice, water, soda) and when you're done they always ask if you would like a refill. I went in today feeling my worst and came out feeling great. Kelly did an awesome job on my pedi and nails as I sipped a glass of white wine. Quick, efficient, great quality, great coffee. What more can I ask for? I had been loyal to another salon in DC, but a few careless filings and an infection later, and I came to Pen Nails in search of a better experience. I was impressed by the selection of colors, and was pleased to see that there were 3 techs available, despite the after-work rush on the Hill. After picking a color, I was offered a drink, and to be honest, I would come back again just for the vietnamese coffee.. Absolutely delicious! My tech was gentle and skilled, and was friendly without being annoying. 2 weeks later and my gel mani still looks impeccable. At about half the price of the salon that gave me an infection, I was impressed by the quality. I'll absolutely be back! read more

I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but for a nail salon that has 4 and half stars, Pen Nail & Spa is a huge disappointment. Lets start with the pedicure, my nail technician cut my toe nails way too short. It was pretty painful when he was filing/shaping my nails. Then it comes the painful manicure. He cut my pinky nail when removing the cuticles. My pinky was bleeding, red and swollen during and after my manicure. Although he is very apologetic about the whole situation, I felt very disappointed and somewhat fooled by the 4 and half star rating. I came with a group of four people including myself, only one person was satisfied with her experience. So 2 stars sounds fair for a nail salon that only guarantees 25% chance of satisfaction. read more

I have visited a lot of shops, and always look forward to returning to Pen Nails for a long lasting mani pedi. They always do a nice job for me and for the clients in the other chairs. I have never made an appointment -- I am always a drop in, usually on weekends -- and have never had to wait more than a few minutes. I have enjoyed consistent quality from all of the team members that have served me. Great color selection. I admire the glitter and other custom manicures I see on other clients. Best manicure I have received in the district! Tiffany paid very close attention to my manicure. She gave me opinions and suggestions on colors. Followed my requests about cutting and nail shape perfectly! She was very attentive to my cuticles, filing, and the gel application! She was very aware of the polish and the uv light throughout! It has been 10 days and my nails look just as good as they did when I left the salon! In addition a complimentary glass of wine was given and Tiffany was sure to give me a chance to take sips between coats of polish! Great price and great service! There are probably cheaper nail salons in the vicinity, but I gladly paid $25 for a pedicure at Pen Nails. The salon is new, clean, and peaceful (unlike Nail Spa down the block, which always seems packed, loud, and somewhat rundown). Granted, I went on a Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., so it was pretty empty. The lady did a very nice job with extra perks, such as a leg massage with cream and hot stone, hot oil treatment for my cracked heels, and clean nails, all within less than 30 minutes. I also appreciated that they stayed open until 9, which is a little later than most of the other salons in the area. I didn't feel rushed as I waited past 8pm for my nails to dry. I'm really rough on my feet (I'm a runner) and this place was amazing. One of the best pedicures I've had in a long time, especially in DC. (not to mention it includes a glass of wine!). They were really attentive and put in effort that made it seem like they actually wanted to do a good job - vs just get you in and out asap. It was $27 for a pedi, so maybe a few dollars more than other places around, but definitely worth it. I got a pedicure here today and had a fantastic experience. The spot is clean and bright, and they play only the best soft rock hits (think a lot of Celine Dion ;). I love this nail salon!!! If I wasn't sold on their nail care, the complimentary wine did it!! It's a really clean, fresh environment with clean equipment. Everyone is extremely friendly and you feel like family when you walk in. The owner has done my nails twice and I love her, but today I got to experience Kelly and she was also great!! She made conversation, learned my name, and genuinely made me comfortable. Best gel manicure I've ever received! I read reviews before I went here and one stuck out to me specifically bc I didn't believe it. It said that her nails didn't crack at all and they were just as perfect weeks later minus the fact the normal growing out. Literally I have not one crack and I've had my nails done for 3 weeks. Every time I get gel my nails get the cracks at the ends of them. Literally they are still perfect. I live in New York, and come down every 3 weeks to get my nails done now. I've been a regular customer every 2-3 weeks for three years now, and I have never been to a better nail salon than Pen Nails. I usually meet with Annie or "Shiny," and their service is outstanding. Not only is the salon itself nice with TVs, massage chairs, and a huge color selection (regular and gel), but there are complimentary drinks as well, ranging from sweet coffee to red wine. With an appointment, I usually get seated within 5 minutes. The longest I've ever waited was 20 minutes, and that was understandable because I went during rush hour which is typically around 5/6PM when everyone gets off work. While you wait they are more than happy to grab you a drink or place your belongings next to the chair you will be in. In case of a chip, they are also quick to fix it for no or little cost. For me, a nail salon is about the attention to little details that keep me coming back again and again. There are just too many nail salons to choose from to put up with sub par service. During my gel mani I just kept counting the little comforts I was enjoying at this salon. First, you're greeted not with "pick your color" but with "What color would you like?" Picking out gel colors in their white bottle is not my thing so I Ioved this question. Then you get a menu with comp drinks. I always do water but it's a very nice touch. And then you sit in that leather seat that you want to but really can't sit back in while getting your nails done. But here they've fixed that with comfy pillows for your back. Your're given warm yes warm water with pretty colorful glass rocks to soak your nails in. Details. And when you go wash your hands, no big roll to fumble with. Each paper towel is folded neatly and with care. The wall color is soothing, the music is a bit safe but soothing too, and the place is just well kept. Again comfy details. They have clean space, certified staff, good prices and do an excellent job. You can tell they care about their business too and it shows in the job they do.
