This was my first time coming because it's only a 10 min walk away from my job. I called around 10:45am and asked to come in for a gel pedicure & gel fill in (totaled $90) around 11:30am for an appt with John. When I came in they sat me immediately and John came over to assist me. I noticed the salon was very clean and they used fresh supplies for my pedicure. John was very friendly and took his time to make sure everything was perfect. I didn't like the color I'd picked and he was very patient with helping me pick out another color and re-doing them for me. Afterwards he started on my nails...WHICH ARE PERFECT! He shaped them exactly how I liked him and he checked in with me the entire time he went through the process. They're super neat and clean, so I'll definitely be coming back to him in the future. The only thing I noticed was the wait time. Luckily when I arrived there was only one other person there, and I was seated immediately. However the people behind me had to wait for a while because they only had two people there who did acrylics and the other two did manis and pedis. The manicure I received here chipped within minutes (they did not even put a second coat of polish). Additionally, the fumes when you walk in are totally unbearable. It's hard to breathe they are so strong (not exaggerating!). The place is in a basement so perhaps all of the chemicals have trouble escaping but it must be a health hazard to breathe in so much alcohol and antiseptic from a 30 minute manicure. Even the staff all wear masks. The price is the best I've seen in the area, but splurging to avoid mediocre service and dangerous fumes is probably worth it read more

I normally go to a different nail salon in Adam's Morgan but it is very expensive and this location is a lot closer to where I live. However, you get what you pay for unfortunately... I am not sure of her name but I think that she is the owner who sits at the station as soon as you come in. I have tried her twice being that I was taking the cheaper route but it is simply not worth it... My nails appear beautiful until I get home and notice all of the flaws, In fact, when I went to her for a second time, she even had to ask if she was the one who did my nails before. They were not up to par and she had to pretty much chip off most of the acrylic... My nails have never chipped while having acrylic on them but after going to her, they are chipping and I keeping snagging things, which is very frustrating. 2 days and they are chipped and the polish is coming off.... That is what I get for trying to be cheap.. I actually have to start all over again with fresh acrylic with tips. Surprising to read all of the positive reviews, perhaps, I just went on bad days I guess. Unfortunately, I will not be returning and will just have to continue paying double the price but at least I will receive stellar service. read more

I've been getting my nails (and the occasional wax) done here for three years. I actually loved to Georgetown but come back to U St to have them do my nails. The prices are competitive and every person on staff does a fabulous job. I've gone other places when on vacation and my longest manicures are always done here. I really love this little place. It's tucked away on U Street and offers great service and very reasonable prices for the DC area. I got a full set of acrylics for $30 (no gel) and after a week the set is still going strong. It's natural and lovely. I recently got a pedicure and also a pleasant experience. The staff is friendly, fast but not rushed, and polite. When I was there, I heard two different customers go, "See you next time," meaning this place definitely has regulars which is a great sign! I'll be going here every time I need anything nail-wise :) EDIT: sadly one day after I posted this review, two of my acrylic nails fell off :( after one week, this shouldn't have happened. After that experience, I decided to just have my pedicures done here. This last visit I was told she(Jenny) was almost done, when I could see that she was just starting a pedicure. 'Meh, I've experienced better" is right! I paid $70 for a gel fill and basic pedicure. After about 3 days, my pedicure looked as if I had my toes done a week and a half ago. My gel manicure is not holding up either (paint already chipping and its GEL). There was a young lady who arrived before me but left after me. Let me tell you why: The nail tech they selected to do her nails was on break and made her wait 30 mins. The guy who did my nails should have went to her first but chose me instead. Also, when the nail tech finally arrived, she rushed through the acrylic removal process so fast that she (1) was very rough on the poor girl's hand and (2) she CUT the girl's nail bed so bad, that it started to BLEED profusely! I usually have a go-to shop in MD but I couldn't make it so I tried this place out. I say this place is a hell no. If you get basic polish (or gel) mani, MAYBE this is a decent place but if you've been in the REAL nail world, girl find somewhere else...Preferably Mimosa or Connecticut ave or I st. I got here like at 6 and didnt leave til 7.50 First of all i got a pedi and the ladies werent attentive at all. She was on her phone and fb messaging and she starts the process then gets a call and just disappears. Rest of it went better but then another lady starts on my acrylics. 5$ more for a shape thats not square or oval, first time ever going to a shop that does this. She gets a video call while shaping and answers and puts earphones in. Shes using the drill and cuts my index finger, my thumb also super scratched. Then she hangs up. She tells me to scoot right and i do. Then yells at me to sit straight and move to the middle. I was in shock like did you just yell at me. I said nothing and moved. Its after 7.30 closing time at this point and sends me to the back to dry and starts mopping. I tell her im done and she said you can leave and im like the floor is wet. My shoes are over there and i have the paper sandals on. She brings me my shoes and im like thats it? No lotion, no massage. Never coming back. It is so hard to find a good go to nail place!! Highly recommend sun nails. I go for a gel manicure and eyebrow waxing every two weeks, pedicure every four weeks. Cost is around $70 for all three. Reliable and clean. They will almost always get you in pretty quickly, and are at least honest about your wait times. I started calling a few hours ahead bc it gets crowded on the weekend! read more

I found Sun Nails on Yelp! and noticed it had great reviews. I was excited to find a place near my office for a convenient place to go on my lunch break or after work. I walked into the salon and was immediately greeted after I mentioned I had an appointment for a pedicure and powder nail manicure. I was promptly escorted to the pedicure chair after I chose my color. My pedicure was great and very relaxing. I flagged for the staff that the polish already on my nails was the powder kind, thinking they may want to soak them in acetone to remove the polish. However, they did not and when I went to sit at the manicure table, the manicurist took an acrylic nail and began to lift off the polish, which I didn't think was the correct way to remove the polish. After 20 minutes, he finally removed all of it and began my manicure. He dry clipped my cuticles, which, again, I felt was unorthodox since that is never the process at other salons, and began putting the powder polish on my nails. He applied two coats and then began sealing them. Unfortunately, he used an OPI product that made the nails look streaky instead of smooth like my previous polish. I didn't realize the mediocre state of my nails until I left the salon and didn't have the time to go back before I had to leave town for a wedding. Therefore, I recommend going for a pedicure but don't get a powder nail polish manicure until they learn more about how to apply it. read more

Every time I get my nails done I get compliments on how beautiful they look. I live in Alexandria and I come to DC specifically to see him. The spa pedicures I get there that include the hot stone massage are amazing and they give you a shoulder/upper back massage while your nails are drying. Dropped in today as a walk-in and was surprised by how busy they were considering it was Memorial Day. There were 3 technicians today and all were busy, but they made the wait pleasant by offering cold bottles of water to us. It was our first visit since we live in another neighborhood. The salon is very clean and the technicians used newly sanitized equipment on each client. They also played pop music which gave it a fun vibe. I needed a gel removal and new gel manicure. My 7 year old daughter was just getting polish (as a treat). The technician filed and wrapped my nails first for the removal and then did my daughter's nails. He was very professional and still soaked and cleaned her nails and asked me if he could just file her nails since they were short. He finished her nails in about 15 minutes which was perfect for the gel to dissolve. In my experience, a good gel removal doesn't scrape or damage nails. He was efficient and never nicked my nail beds (which I have had happen at other salons). He was meticulous in examining each nail before applying the gel coats. After the last coat, an air bubble formed on one nail, but he deftly repaired it. If you are looking for social chatter from your tech, this may not be your place. All of the technicians were focused on their client's manicures or pedis and didn't talk much to each other either. I liked the warm towel wrap that they offered at the end of the service. It was only $36 for my gel and $6 for my daughter's polish. We'll definitely be back and recommend this place for anyone who wants a good, clean salon. read more

The technician removed my previous set of acrylics by wedging a nail tip between my acrylic and nail to remove them. This is incredibly damaging to the nail, not to mention painful because this rips off layers of your nails, making the nail bed more tender too. In a typical salon, you'd use an acetone soak to take them off but this is a shortcut some salons use. I really liked how my nails turned out but I don't feel comfortable going back because I don't want them to damage my nails further. read more

I used to be a regular of Sun Nail Spa due to it's excellent pricing. I was thrilled to find such a reasonably priced acrylic fill in the DC area (just $18!). The price was so good, I was willing to put up with the dreadful customer service and mediocre quality for a while. But over time, I grew increasingly frustrated with the horrible mismanagement of this salon and the technicians' sloppy technique and incredible rudeness. Most of the technicians are unbelievably rude to customers and refuse to heed simple requests. I always asked my female technician for round tips, but she would ignore my request and go to town with her file on the sides of my nails until they were pointed, rubbing my skin raw in the process. If I tried to gently remind her of my preference for round rather than pointed, she would become visibly annoyed with me and start speaking angrily (about me, I'm sure) in another language to the other technicians. The lack of decent management only makes things worse. I would make appointments every time I came in for a fill, and each time--without fail--I would be made to wait 15, sometimes 30 minutes. Rarely would I receive an apology. When I would finally get seated, the technician would then treat me very rudely, ignoring my attempts at friendly small talk, and disregarding any request I had about my nails. I was made to feel like a burden just for being there, as if I was some sort of inconvenience rather than a paying customer. I have never been treated so poorly so consistently by people who are supposedly in the "service" industry. On top of all that, my fill was often sloppy or rushed. The technician would either get acrylic all over my cuticles and skin (which was painful to remove at home later) or fail to file down the preexisting acrylic properly before applying the fill, resulting in uncomfortably thick nails. Mine were so thick after the last time that, when I got my finger stuck in something the other week, my *entire nail* was pulled out of my nail bed instead of just breaking like it normally should have. This injury would not have happened if my fill had been completed to a proper thickness. I had to have my nail surgically removed from my finger by a doctor, and it will now take 3-6 months to grow back. Thanks, Sun Nail Spa! For anyone who considers coming here (especially for a fill), you should be warned that, although they have great prices, you will somehow still get *less* than you paid for in terms of your experience. After months of putting up with horribly rude technicians and poor quality, the straw has finally broken the camel's back. I will never set foot in this salon again. read more

Took aggressive filing, picking, and acetone soaking to get the nails off. Pro: Great standard pedicure and great color selection from OPI and possibly the best nail option around 14th and U (but not south of U). Con: Techs aren't up to par with other salons.
