Depending on the time and days for the classes. I know weekends are a bit hectic. Friday they tend to be booked. BUT, overall our experience had been good. Each instructors teach different levels and help explaining or showing to kids. Even if you have a special need kids, they are wonderful in that as well. My son has been learning different things from different instructors. They try to accommodate everyone on schedule and work around your schedule the best they can. The pool is heated which is good for the children. It is very clean as well. No kids been sick like other places I heard in the past. If the kids have siblings with younger kids, they have a cute play area for them. A kitchen and a little house in the back. Some magazines while the kids have fun. read more

Overall I would say I like Peninsula Swim school. I had my daughter in private lessons for 1.5 years with very little progress so I took her out for a year and a half before starting back up . The lack of progress was mostly due to her not wanting to put her head under the water unless it was on her terms , and struggling with water going up her nose . I figured I would wait until she was older and could be reasoned with , and she could absorb instruction better . On the flip side I feel like the school should have stepped in to make the recommendation that we hold off for a while since progress was but being made as I spent thousands of dollars at that point ( which is likely why they didn't say anything ) I have really liked the instructors we've had, and my daughter has as well . The school itself is adorable, and the front desk staff is also kind . There was an issue early on when I heard two instructors talking about a student negatively in the bathroom and that did turn me off a bit . I don't think either of them work there any longer. I get that co workers will communicate about on the job experiences, but just don't do it when customers can hear. We are currently working with Jean and we really like him . He is giving clear solid instructions, and extremely positive feedback and reinforcement. I do think most of the instructors are great about that . There's plenty of space to sit and watch your child learn. Theres a cute little yard in the back as well . read more

I signed my autistic, water-loving 4 year old son up for a private swimming lesson. When I spoke to person on the phone and I let them know my son is autistic, they asked me all the right questions about how to approach my son to build a connection in order to keep him regulated. She immediately let me know that she thinks Luke would be a great fit for my son, O'Shea. We showed up 10 minute early so that we could acclimate to the new environment since we'd never been there before. Luke walked in right when we did and I saw him go straight to the office and thoroughly study O'Shea's preference sheet. When it was time for the class to start, Luke came into the pool and immediately greeted O'Shea by his name and O'Shea went right into his arms. Luke was very kind and warm and had a great energy with O'Shea. He was so so patient and you can tell that he definitely studied that preference sheet well. This is a long overdue review. But here it is anyway. It has been a life long goal of mine to learn how to swim, and I finally made it a tangible goal in 2022. It is incredibly intimidating to be one of the few adults learning how to swim in a predominantly child-focused swim school- especially when you see how well most of the kids (that are only a fraction of your age) swimming so confidently. But Andrew made easing into weekly swim lessons a breeze. I remember my first class like it was yesterday. Andrew introduced himself and had reviewed the answers on my questionnaire and noted that I was afraid of the water. For my first time in the pool, he had me just get accustomed. There was no real lessons that day, but mostly just getting comfortable, allowing me to gain trust in him and build confidence in myself that I wouldn't drown in the kiddie pool. The middle part of the pool reaches about 4-5 ft in depth, so even when I panicked, he gently guided me a few steps to where it was shallow again. l fully appreciated that no matter how confident I did get in my swimming abilities, he continued to walk alongside me throughout the entire lesson ensuring that if anything were to happen, he was there to save me. I also appreciated that whenever I did lose some confidence- let's say I swallowed a lot of water or I was extra tired or I panicked because I was tired and couldn't breathe- he always made sure to take a step back in the lessons and allow me to regain confidence again. I took 8 months of lessons progressing through four different swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and I began learning the butterfly stroke) before deciding that I felt good enough to survive in the ocean. Last winter, I managed to brave the kayak trek from Lanikai Beach to the Mokes (pictured) ... which, if you know me, I would NEVER have done because I was so afraid of drowning. Deep water is still a huge fear of mine, but I was able to cross the ocean AND get INTO it miles away from shore all thanks to Peninsula Swim School and the incredible, non-judgmental instructors there. Terrible lousy place! The pool is overcrowded, place is poorly managed, no parking slots, inexperienced and at times rude staff

We had a terrible experience with teacher Leola. In a one on one class one week, for which we were charged $35, she took our kid and made her cry the whole time. Told us she doesn't mind kids crying. Our daughter had a terrible first time experience. They told us to come back the next week to a more experienced teacher, Gabby, and charged us $35 dollars again. They told us it would be a semi-private class again, but when we got there it was a group class. The teacher didn't have much time to connect with our kid, and our kid was still scared from the previous session with Leola. She didn't even go in the water and we came back after 10 minutes of watching other kids swim. They wouldn't give us our money back even though they admitted they had overcharged us for a semi private class. After talking to them for 10 minutes, they handed us $15 in cash. Terrible terrible first time experience for our kid, and lack of common sense and respect from Leola and the receptionist. They are just interested in money and not your kid's experience. We've been coming here several months after hearing it recommended from several parent friends. They are popular so it can be a little tough to get a slot at the most convenient time, but their instructors are skilled and patient, and we've seen a lot more growth in our kiddo's swimming skills and confidence since coming here. We have been coming to Peninsula Swim School for the past couple of months and our son LOVES it. He's enrolled in a baby swim class with Ana and she has been a great instructor to work with. She is great with the kids and helps make even the most cautious baby trust her enough to leave their parents for a few minutes to swim with her. Our son has very quickly adapted to being in the water and learned how to put his face in and hold his breath for a few seconds. Now he is also learning how to kick his feet when on his front or back. Also, he used to be super tentative of the slide they have there but now his face lights up into a big old grin every time he gets the chance to go down the slide. The pool here isn't very big and there are several classes that are running in tandem and while it may seem a little chaotic at times, all the staff members very efficiently navigate their way around each other's sessions where you don't really notice anyone getting into each other's way. The prices here are very reasonable too - if you pay in cash, you get a couple of extra sessions, so we got a total of 11 for only $220. Would highly recommend Peninsula Swim School! read more

This place is managed so poorly. The pool is extremely crowded. There are so many lessons going on and kids are constantly swimming into each other. The teachers are so inconsistent. We get a new sub almost every other week. I asked repeatedly to let me know when the sub is a male teacher as my daughter doesn't want to swim with a male instructor. They never call me or call me last minute when I am already on the way. Extreme waste of time and resource as I don't find out when I get there and just end up going home. Teachers are also mostly students and not as experienced and skilled at teaching than others. My son goes to aqua and it's such a better experience. They are slightly more expensive but it's day and night. read more

Peninsula Swim has our vote of approval. So far so good. My comments are only for beginner level swimmers. It's a simple no frills heated outdoor chlorine pool that is covered in its entirety by a large awning. It's packed but isn't a loud echo chamber like indoor pools. For the youngest swimmers, I noticed that all instructors follow similar teaching methods focusing on water safety which consists of training them to roll over to float on their backs to breath. It seems effective and sensible. They offer private, semi-private and group lessons. Group lessons are mix skill levels and maxes out at 4 students. The instructors seem professional but not super friendly. This works for some kids and not others. They charge a fee if you pay with a credit card. Street parking only but spaces are plentiful. read more

My 10-year old started out scared of the water from poor experiences with swim teachers in the past. He recently switched over to Teacher Melanie and has made HUGE progress! In less than two months with her, he is able to swim in deep water and has some pretty impressive moves. Melanie is patient, fun but firm enough that he doesn't goof off, and extremely competent. She knows proper form and makes sure to not only model the strokes herself, but then guides him until she can release control. Her hands-on approach paired with positive reinforcement has made an incredible difference. He has gone from a child who is scared of the water to one who has confidence and loves swimming! read more

My daughter loved her, they got along really well, and she really listened to everything Bianca said. Whomever speaks and answers calls on the phone (sounds like a rude teenager) should be let go immediately. I have never dealt with somebody so rude before. I have been calling and leaving voicemails about a 4:30 and 5:00 class for my children, told it was open and to call back if I was interested. The next day I did leave a voicemail saying we will take it. Nobody called back to confirm. So I called again and was told nothing is available. Then she talked back to me and said it was my fault. So unprofessional and rude. I will be sharing with everyone how unprofessional this business is. Go to La Petit Baleen in HMB. We had wonderful years there, and unfortunately cannot make the drive over the hill at the moment. But if you can, a much kinder establishment. This place deserves 10 stars!! My 5 year old has been going here for about a year now and is doing really well. Thanks to instructors at Peninsula Swim School. Litzi and Mariel have so much patience with her and are just the sweetest. They have been so gentle and have taken their time in getting her accustomed to the water. Bc of my schedule, we had to switch days and instructor on several occasions. After making the switch, instructors Liola, Ana and Andrew have been amazing! They all have their own styles, which has been nice to see. I appreciate how they motivate and challenge my daughter. She is progressing so well and now she is so confident in the pool. I love the fact that they are not only teaching the kids to swim, but they teach them all the proper techniques as well as discipline. My daughter looks forward to coming to swimming lessons every week therefore that has to give us a good sign about this swim school and highly recommend it! read more

This place is awesome. Found this school on Yelp and reserved a visit and first lesson with no commitment for future visits. The place is smaller (one pool) than other swim schools but this turned out to be better for me. Most times I end up with private lessons although I don't reserve private lessons. Private tend to me priced higher at most schools so this is a plus. Maria is and excellent swimmer and an awesome instructor. I've been going to Peninsula Swim School for a few months and love the place. Their entire staff has been super helpful. Highly recommend this school, just keep in mind it's a smaller facility so just depends what you prefer. read more

We have been at the school for several months and love it. My 3-4 yo was terrified of water when we first started. Caitlyn was such a good and patient teacher! He now loves his classes and can jump off the side of the pool and swim to his teacher with ease. My 4-5 yo was not afraid but had no experience in the water and now swims the length of the pool and has switched on to learning techniques. Tina at the front desk is phenomenal. She knows everything, is flexible, super efficient and on top of her game. She is also extremely nice and we feel that she cares. We certainly don't feel like a number here, something I a sad to say happens often at other places. We love it here. The lessos are reasonably priced, students can have one excused absence every 8 lessons - a flexibility I haven't found elsewhere. They have teachers with different styles, so they can match your child to a teacher that will work for them. The facilities are not fancy but are certainly clean, and the kids love the play area for after class. read more

We started at PSS in the "mommy and me" baby class when my oldest son was maybe 18months... he's now 5.5yo and we are still here! After the baby class we continued with group classes and have had a few different instructors (due to them leaving, can't blame these youngsters). We now have our two oldest boys together in a class and they are still loving it... but most importantly, learning how to swim and be water safe! Over all these years, we've met and made friends with many parents and instructors, but the one person whose been a constant is the manager, Tina. She has always taken good care of us. Even my kids can't wait to run in to give her a giant hug. She is doing a marvelous job at running this ship! Highly recommend for kids(toddlers). tldr: my son took summer classes, instructors are very good with kids. Kids love them too. They have well defined trial and vacation policies that are reasonably flexible. Today I observed great professionalism and ethics by the entire staff and instructor, hence want to share my positive experience. My kid ween to his first group class today without , he was very scared in the water without someone holding him, I trusted their wisdom. (I am sure this situation is not uncommon)They asked me to stay out of my kid's sight and not worry. Some parents got agitated with some issues that I would rather not mention, do not want to offend them. They wanted my kid out of the group(because he was crying a lot), but staff nicely handled the situation, without agreeing to a knee jerk reaction. I was looking for swimming lessons for my 5yo twin girls. I can say that they are good enough to be in the pool without an adult. They would be safe. Peninsula Swim School won't be the one! My issue is the amount of real practice time during the class. In our case, semi private class, it is only half of the time. Overall, one child will have to wait half of the class on the bench in the pool. No matter how it is organized. I don't understand how "teachers" don't see the problem here. Whatever subject you are teaching, if your student stays half of the time doing nothing, it isn't right!!! I've been teaching swimming in middle and high school for more than 20 years. Sometimes, classes were exceeded 20 students. But never a student had to wait half of the time (more if you are in a group class!) doing nothing. For me, it is unbelievable that the owner, a former LS teacher doesn't see the issue. Still in our case, for example, 1 swimmer can be asked to pick up objects at the bottom of the pool while the other one is with the teacher. If the latter cannot organize a safe class or supervise both of them at the same time, then there is some pedagogy issues. I'm willing to come and show you how it can be done in a safe environment with 2 or 3 kids. Just organize your class differently! On a positive side I appreciated their honesty. On another note, it is surprising that the lady at the front desk doesn't wear a mask as well as the teachers in the pool. They could wear a shield at least. Yes, definitely not for us and don't recommend it. read more

Great place for kids to learn how to swim. All the teachers are friendly and helpful including Lauren our teacher. Learning to swim in a group environment was critical for our child, who was apprehensive in the water at first, but once others were around to see as an example, our child did really well! We have been coming here for nearly a year and have had pretty mixed experiences. The pros - warm, semi-indoor pool - a kind teacher (Mariel) who was patient with our toddler. The cons: - No notification of substitute teacher until we are literally on the pool deck looking for our regular teacher. Even when substitution is known ahead of time (eg absence for family event) and even when prior frequent subs resulted in our daughter dreading lessons for 2 months. It would be nice to know in advance (or morning of) and have opportunity to skip the 1:1 lesson. - we were not allowed to put our classes on hold (even though this is in their written policies). We were ok with not guaranteeing that we could get the same teacher and time slot but an employee told us that was impossible and class forfeiture was required. Unfortunately I don't think the owners comments address the specific issues at hand nor have we received any contact to resolve the issue. ---- details: We have had frequent substitute teachers, often without any warning or call. In one situation, my daughter had 2-3 subs within one month and developed such a fear of swimming lessons that she was crying and screaming for 15-20m each 30m lesson (which took another month to get over after her regular teacher returned). Despite this experience, we received a sub today with no call or notice yet again (the teacher is on vacation, not sick). Also the rescheduling policy is pretty inflexible. While the center often closes on holiday weekends it does so with little notice (maybe 1-2 weeks) yet they won't allow rescheduling or missing of classes beyond once every 8-10 classes. We understand this is difficult to manage and try to adhere to the rules but sometimes sickness and family events get in the way. In one case a front desk employee was able to put our package on hold so we wouldn't lose a lesson (albeit not promising to hold our lesson time) yet today a new front desk employee said that'd be impossible and we would need to pay a lesson penalty ($50). Finally as far as actual swimming progress -- every child is different but our daughter can't swim more than a few feet despite a year of lessons. I would not consider her water safe. My mother mentioned that I was able to swim nearly a full length of the pool at the same age (3.5) after 1:1 lessons. Our daughter has been a loyal student here for a year and disappointed at the inconsistency and lack of flexibility or consideration. read more

We randomly found Peninsula Swim School when there was no availability at our usual place, and I'm so glad we did! In just a few lessons our 'always stuck in doggie paddle' 6 yr old son started doing freestyle, backstroke, and learning to dive. I was impressed with the kind yet unrelenting approach of his instructor Leola, and he adored her as well. He can be a little lazy and she got him to work for a full 30 mins every time! Front office staff are very friendly and helpful, and the cash only benefits are a great deal compared to other local swim programs. We'll be back in the Fall! read more

My boys and I just finished a nine week session at Peninsula Swim School. I leave as a satisfied customer and I would recommend that other parents in the area take a look at this option if you're in the market. On the other hand, though we had a good run, I'm going to try something new when we are next ready for swim lessons. The Pluses: + Multiple, concurrent small group classes meant my three boys (ages 2, 4 and 6) could take three different lessons at the same time. + All day, similar classes meant we could call and switch session time when a conflict came up + Wide range of instructor personalities means there is probably someone there with the right vibe for your kiddie (e.g., we had one instructor with a "tough coach" attitude for my 6 year old and another more "friendly aunt" type for my scared 4 year old) + Super friendly and accommodating co-owner answered the phone and helped me most of the times I called + $140 for 9 lessons is pretty darn reasonable + Both my 6 year old and 4 year old made a lot of progress in two months The Cons: - Super crowded pool and deck area on weekends - Approach of leaving little kids on the ledge while swimming with others one-on-one looks a bit scary, so worth keeping an eye on yours if they are not yet water safe - Class for 1-2 year olds, like another I tried elsewhere, is just a water intro and could be done on your own - Babies are not required to wear plastic pants (just swim diapers), which is kind of yucky - Changing room is tiny and no fun - Lessons-only environment means there is no time for casual play, so my kids began to see swimming as only a chore So there's a lot to like and some notable downsides too. I have such mixed feelings about this place! I was recommended to go here by a girlfriend whose daughter loved swim classes. But let me tell ya - EVERY KID IS DIFFERENT. So, my kid is VERY slow to warm up. Which is fine. That's not why I give this place 2 stars. I give this place 2 stars because the swim lessons seem to be like managing organized chaos. There are a lot of kids in the pool at one time usually on the weekends and there is such a limited space to change your baby and get them ready for the pool, especially in the women's bathroom. And then getting into the pool is like trying to play frogger because there's always a plethora of splashing kids and instructors zig zagging back and forth. And back to the swim classes - so instructors really do the same thing over and over again for an infant swim class. It's mostly just singing songs, bouncing your kid in the water, having them crawl across a blue floaty mat, and slide down a slide. Then there's some face dunking. That's it! And, if you're like us and purchased a slew of classes, you really get the point after 3-4 classes. If you have a pool at your apartment complex or a free pool you can go to, those 3-4 classes is all you need to know so you can do your own thing. But this place makes you purchase like 7-8 classes and it's really not worth it. You would think with the money that this place gets they would spend a bit more making it a bit nicer or expanding the bathrooms or ANYTHING. But it just feels a little dated, kind of unclean and the classes feel a bit rushed to me. So that's my 2 cents. So yes, it was great that we learned some cute exercises to try with our son, and the instructors were all very nice and lovely, but honestly, we won't be coming back. read more

I highly recommend this school for swim lessons due to good price and good instruction. There are a few poor reviews about the changing areas but is that the real reason you are there? Your're there to have your child learn to swim. I have worked with multiple instructors and they are all very good and professional. The changing area isn't the biggest bu it gets the job done. Change out of what you need to and get back home. I think the easiest is to prep yourself before going by getting all swim gear on before you are there and just dry and change in the locker room. Save the showering etc for when you get home. It also is pretty crazy there on Saturdays mostly. There are a lot of lessons going on and the pool seems crowded but if you don't like that try another day. I have been to a few weekday classes and on Sunday and a few times we were one of the few in the pool. So if you don't like the crowds, don't arrange for Saturday classes. They also have free swims there a couple times a month for $5. That's pretty good if you kids like to swim and just want to be in the pool. I used to own a pool and upkeep is crazy, better to go to a place where the water is warm and upkept for you. Even though it is in a tent, the water is really very warm. The colder days can be a little rough when transitioning to the changing room but get your towels ready and you will be fine. They also have a lot of play structures for the little ones to play before or after class. I'd recommend taking a free trial class if you wanted to test them out. They also give you bonus classes if you sign up that day. So try it out, if you don't like it no harm no foul. read more

The owner John has a terrible attitude - beware! Hung up on a paying customer! First off, I really liked our swim instructor Austin, who sadly is leaving. He was so patient with my 10 month old and has a background working with kids, which really showed. After bringing my son to take lessons with him, I got to know him and wanted to stay in touch, which he was okay with. When I called to leave my contact information and see how else I could stay connected, the owner John was so rude and made me feel like I was being inappropriate, hanging up on me after making a snide remark how I ought to ask the wife. I get that you're not allowed to give out personal information, but I'm extremely shocked at the poor etiquette the owner showed. I hope my new instructor is as good, otherwise I'm leaving this place. Btw, on the day of my first trial class, I showed up with my baby but there was no one there. The person who I had spoken to on the phone (I'm pretty sure it was John but regardless) gave me the wrong information and apparently there had been no class scheduled for that time! It gave me a bad first impression of the company but I was willing to forgive and forget because of the great teachers. What a shame that the owner can't get it together and provide the same excellent customer service as the teachers they hire. read more

One star (I'd go zero if allowed) for front desk Tina, we have been coming to peninsula swim school for 1.5 years (we missed at most 1-2 classes but we paid nonstop) And we are waiting to add a second private class for my daughter. So more $$$$ to them. When we came back in January after their winter close down. I mentioned that I received a coupon for two free classes in mail. Tina said "oh you just paid in Dec 2019 (right before winter break), you won't be able to get the two free classes but you will get it when you pay next time." Today I just tried to pay for March and now Tina said "you need to bring in that exact coupon so I can give it to my bookkeeper, I can't give you those free classes. How do I know you really received it in the mail? It's for new clients anyway." Really?! You didn't mention any of that last time, in fact you told me I could get the two free classes. What pisses me off is she thinks she runs the place and can say whatever she wants. There's no flexibility in booking classes. You can only miss a class but she can give you a sub anytime she wants without any advanced notice. BTW Tina, those "coupons" look exactly like those fliers sitting on your desk. I've been paying without getting free classes so you should know I don't really care. But your attitude is so bad and you make scheduling a nightmare. I love the teacher, Caitlin, she's the best. We have been bringing our kids here for swimming lessons for the last 5 years. We love having a safe, heated pool with specially trained instructors right here in our Redwood City neighborhood. The classes are perfect--half hour long for little kids which is long enough to get them a good workout but not too long to get them totally wiped out. The pool water is amazingly warm, we especially love it in the winters when you can see steam rising from it. They recently underwent some big renovations, put a new tent on their pool, bought new hanging posters, a few new toys etc. One of our favorite instructors here is teacher Julie who leads the parent and baby class. She is so patient and loving, and gently yet firmly coaxes the babies into getting comfortable in the water. I think it's because of her that both our kids love the water and have no fear of swimming. They have a nice side and back yard with a play structure to keep kids entertained until it is time for their class. The only thing I would like this school to change is their policy around missed classes, or the ability to take a couple of weeks break between two sessions. They scare you into thinking that as soon as you take a break somebody is going to pounce on your spot--I wish they would hold the spot (free of charge) at least for long-time families like ours, and guarantee that we would get the same instructor when we return from a 2 week break. They also offer only one make-up class per session, but kids get sick more frequently than that! Especially in the winter. Oh, and I wish they had a water cooler!! All in all, a good place to send your kids to for initial swimming lessons. read more

We love this swimming school. The instructors are great, and everyone in the office is great too. My son was quite scared of the water and now he's swimming with his head under the water! From the outside I was worried that the pool and facility in general was going to be cold, but we had nothing to worry about. The pool is heated, the changing rooms are warm and the sitting area around the pool is just right too. Overall, I wish we had sent my son here sooner! read more

Teacher Caitlin is awesome. Patient, knowledgeable, and gives great feedback. My son learned to swim by age 3.5. The swim school has a good play space for the kids while they are waiting for their turn or for afterwards. In my case, it's a great spot for my youngest to play while He waits for his older brother. The owners are great. They have a wonderful make up/swim class hold policy which allows for flexibility in our ever changing children (ie sicknesses, vacations). read more
