Love this local outdoor pool. Heated, separate deep end from kiddie pool. Usually not crowded during fam swim for the bigger pool. When kids camp is there, it can be loud. Annoying that women's showers are freezing cold, but the hack is use the outside showers next to the men's locker room. $6 for adults. I love to get my swim in. Yes there are some annoying rules, but it still is a pleasant experience overall. read more

Lots of unreasonable rules like ONLY white reef shirts and NO goggles covering nose. Even For the deep end EACH child needs their OWN adult or you have to swim in a 2 FEET DEEP POOL. I bought my lunch from one of the Downtown Japanese stores and with the nice weather, I found this park in this residential neighborhood-with a mixed family crowd. The park/recreational center is called the King Center and obviously named after civil-right leader: Martin Luther King Jr. The amenity includes a community center, two basketball-courts, a baseball field and a playground for our future leaders. Also, there is large area for families to have a picnic or other gathering(s). There is also an outdoor swimming pool, but the swimming facility is named after the San Mateo officer who was gunned down in 1968; Gordon Joinville. I'll give the facility a five-star for naming after a officer who lost his life in the line of duty. This is a decent place for a swim, if some parts of the facility are starting to show their age a little. I've only gone for lap swimming, which is typically in the morning, after the pool filtration system has had ample time to filter out all the kid pee. The only real negative is that dropping in to swim is a bit pricey- $5.50 at the time of this writing. There's a "season" rate of $110, but that brings me to the next problem with this place. It's not a problem with the facility itself but more a sad reflection on the times in which we live: it's barely open 3 months out of the entire year, from mid-June through mid-August. That's it. It used to be open all year, but I guess it's more important that nobody ever get their taxes raised under any circumstances, ever, than for people to have access to nice facilities and clean parks. (Somehow, though, we manage to find the money to keep the Golf Course open year-round, but I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out why that is.) The other drawback that isn't a reflection on the park itself is that it's hard to find their hours of operation and fees on the city web site, which is horribly designed and poorly organized. You might expect to find this information on the pool's page, but you'd be wrong. Instead, the information is in multiple places, organized by "activity". Staff is unprofessional and amateur. This pool may be cheap but it's also overchlorinated and poorly run. Would recommend any of the public pools in the area over this one--rinconada, Burgess pool or highlands are all much more enjoyable. This one is not the place to spend a beautiful Bay Area afternoon. read more

I've been going to the Joinville Swim Center in San Mateo since I was a little girl. Nowadays I'm passing down the swimming tradition by bringing my 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son to Joinville Swim Center ... and they absolutely love it! The Joinville Swim Center is open for the summer season and offers youth swim lessons, recreational swimming, birthday parties and pool rentals. Amenities include: - 2 swimming pools - a larger, 6-lane pool 4 1/2 feet to 6 feet deep and a smaller shallow water training pool 2 feet to 3 1/2 feet deep. - Heated locker rooms and showers with handicapped accessible shower and bathrooms. - Lawn and deck space as well as a patio with tables and chairs. - Multi-purpose room with weight equipment. Every July Joinville holds a "Family Fun Day", a fun afternoon of water games, relay races, and special treats for the whole family that we always try to attend. For the 2015 Season: OPEN: Saturday, June 13th-Monday, September 7th HOURS: Monday-Friday 1:00pm-4:00pm Saturday/Sunday and Holidays 1:00pm-5:00pm *Be sure to wear goggles as there is lots of chlorine in the water. Don't take the aquatots class!!! What a waste of time and money. We have two of our children enrolled. They do nothing in that class but sing songs and you walk around in a circle in a 3ft pool carrying your child. We took our first class last weekend, what a joke. Most of the kids were crying and the teacher just kept looking at her notes to remember the words to the songs. What exactly am i paying for?!? I don't expect an Olympic swimmer coming out of these lessons but I've had my kids in other lessons at the YMCA and at la petite and at least from them they did learn something. I guess we will know the words to wheels on the bus by the end of four weeks. Save your money read more

Came here for a swim this morning. The water was warm (but not too warm for laps), everything was clean and well maintained. There were a bunch of locals in the pool, and the friendly lifeguard, an old-timer to the pool, greeted them each by name, and cheered me on in my swim. The locker facilities are dated but clean, and I'll definitely be back. Sadly, since the San Mateo Marlins moved to San Mateo City College, this pool will stop operating year-round as of September 5th, 2011, and from then on, it will be only open in the summer. read more

Such a nice day ruined by once again;the rude staff. Easedropping is a common activity these lifegaurds do, instead of life gaurding my life. I swear i almost drowned from lack of oxygen and my friend helped while another lifegaurd was yelling at a girl wearing colored tank top. To top it off, kids pee in the little pool; and that doesnt mess with the pool filters?! I would not come here because of the rude staff. read more

This facility is located in the North Central part of San Mateo near down town. The Joinville Swim Center is located at Bayside/Joinville Park in the Shoreview part of San Mateo and is open year-round. read more

Made a mistake of going to Joinville swim center. Too much of chlorine content that left my eyes burning every 15 minutes and blurred vision for hours. Not making another visit here. read more

All four of my children learned how to swim at this pool the oldest being 26. They have wonderful instructors very clean and sanitary , great atmosphere I highly highly suggest this place for swimming lessons and just to enjoy a day in the sun. read more

This pool was a great find for us. To find an outdoor pool not far from home in SF that isn't crowded, has a nice grassy area, low entry fee, and modern facilities is pretty good. The weather is consistently warmer and sunnier but it's not quite like the south or east bay heat. My kids love this pool and I quite like it myself. read more

Excellent!! I held a birthday party at Joinville Sunday, July 28th. I was a bit nervous based on past reviews I read. This place is a hidden jem. Kim sets up the parties and she is so helpful. Billy was there to supervise the day of the party and assisted me so efficiently to keep everything on track. While the pool is open to the public during parties, we lucked out and virtually had the facility to ourselves. Lifeguards kept a close eye on the kids and were there to supervise and host pool games. The kids said the water temperature was very comfortable(no shivering) and the water was clear and clean. The chlorine level was great, as there was no noted stinging of eyes and no heavy smell of chlorine on the kids after swimming. There also was no "gamey" smell on the kids or their towels that seems to come from questionably clean water conditions. The locker rooms were also quite clean and in good condition compared to many swim facilities here on the peninsula. We were able to set-up food, and the kids lounged on blankets on the grass while they snacked. They had 3 hours(there are 4 possible) and kept themselves busy swimming and socializing every minute. Only possible bump...if your party starts at 1pm and the lifeguard hosted games start at 1:30, you would want to be able to set-up the party table at say 12:30(which the crew allowed me to do...but may not be a regular thing) and be available as a host for the kids being swim tested for the big pool at 1pm, so they can participate in the games at 1:30pm. In the end, it all ran very smooth. Even parents with pools at home said this was a better, safer set-up than hosting and supervising 15 to 20 kids at home. He warned up pretty quick, she is a great teacher, hope he gets her again next summer..we caught the class late so we only did one registration thingy but next yr will ketch it right when swim class starts to the end, my mom why fit guys last class and they had a blast read more

My kids are just about to wrap up a summer camp here. We won't be going back. They love swimming (like most kids) and are pretty good swimmers too. But they have decided to sit out the splash time because the water is so laden with chemicals and chlorine that their skin and hair feels uncomfortable after swimming there. read more
